Someone once described Line 6 distortion as "Kazoo distortion" and I had the brilliant idea of getting a line 6 spider and a kazoo with a vocoder pedal and comparing if the kazoo through the vocoder created a better distortion than a Line 6 Spider. I unfortunately couldn't afford it (and still can't) so please Glenn, think about doing this shootout. Please I'll even send you different kazoos for testing
Daniel Acosta If Glenn shaved and they made a wig out of it for Henning I’m sure most people wouldn’t notice if they never said anything. That would actually be great for an April fools prank, they’d just have to dub over each other
One guy is a lot smarter than the other, that's all. In the United States, as the television makes us stupid as F%$#, that same television tells us if we believe what they tell us then we are smart. This makes American's ever more dumber, to the point where we can't even tell what smart is anymore.
If your serious about the kazoo bit, you can actually buy kazoos with built in stereo jacks, so you could actually plug it into an amp. It'd be cool to see how you'd make the sound actually useable.
Yeah, my office manager has a thing for Kazoos and I found one of these for her... I kept offering to bring one of my amps in for her but she was happy with iRig into her iPhone :) www.amazon.com/Kazoobie-HUMMbucker-Electric-Kazoo-colors/dp/B002GI55PY/ref=sr_ph_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1524229977&sr=sr-1&keywords=electric+kazoo&dpID=41OLkh7prDL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
I'm not gonna lie. I was not expecting something that ugly to make such an unbelievably great clean sound. It's warmer than any metal-string acoustic I've heard, but plucky and articulate enough to stand out. Massive props to the lutheir, and engineers who captured the sound!
Okay Glenn, I've been watching your videos sense the "how to record heavy drums" series. This is by far my favorite video now. The way you two bounce off each other is great. Keep it up man I look forward to more.
It helps that it was running through high-end gear into a high-end recording rig, though. Still, it's a bit like a sleeper car in that it performs better than it looks!
Dude, i cannot recommend a CBG enough. Got one as a gift for my wedding, became OBSESSED. Something about its simplicity makes playing it ridiculously fun. No fluff, fewer strings to mess with, makes it so easy to sit and compose really sweet stuff.
I love the chemistry between these two. Feels like one of my kind of friendship with the constant teasing, ridiculing and making fun of each other. In my experience, if a friendship can't survive teasing it's not a strong friendship.
That's a flatpup pickup. They are awesome. I make cigar box guitars with the cheapest parts possible and play all sorts of modern stuff on them. Just done a cover of Damage Case by Motorhead, and covered a load of other stuff on my channel. The pickups I use cost just a few bucks!
Well life is complete for me. To day before noon I found out that that Gibson sg guitar with the head stock broken and retrofitted to the back like a stinebirger is not only real but is totally playable and sounds half was good and keeps tune and then I got to see Glenn play metal on a cigarbox guitar.
Henning is the Jackie Wright to Glenn's Benny. The clip should have ended with Glenn being chased by women in St. Pauli Girl outfits, sped up with "Yakety Sax" playing in the background.
It's really interesting the kind of stuff people used for making guitars. i seen electric guitars in Mali west Africa that were made from big dried out gourds. lots of creative methods for making a homemade guitar. Rock on guys
I've owned and played on cigar box guitars for some years now. They are mostly played in an open chord tuning. So if you wanted to do this in the traditional cigar box guitar way you should try it tuned to open E. It's an entirely new experience. Gets you out of your comfort zone. Nothing is where it's supposed to be. I've found that this can really open up your guitar playing. Makes you think and opens you up to more creative approaches to playing.
I just skipped straight to the example because I'm short on time but I've gotta say, I think this is your best drum sound yet. Compressing on the way in is really working.
Jug bands were much later than the mid 19th century, early 20th (especially the 20s). A similar instrument that existed earlier was the diddely bow, which was a stick, two screws, some baling twine and a bottle as a resonator, it was the training instrument for slide guitarists and was used for learning intonation and technique.
The short answer is yes.... try the middle 4 of an open G tuning, throw in some slide and off you go. Or try a 3 string cigar box guitar tuned to a low d tuning or g tuning in 5ths
I built a cigar box guitar when I was a freshman in highschool...04 or so..still have it...have a skeleton key for a nut, a coat hanger bridge/whammy bar and tooth pick frets...it's dumb but I still have it...old cremo cigar box
Kudos for Henning then... But as I said before in another youtube post... You are far better guitarist (at least rhythmically) than you ussually accept. :)
Thanks for all the uploads, Glen. I love your videos and tho I am still a clueless musician. Your videos have helped me learn many things that I could’ve been oblivious to. Again, many thanks. Killer video as always. Cool shit. Loved the end.
When Henning was holding the cat, he looked like a concerned step parent that "just doesn't understand this 'metal' thing the kiddos are so in to these days"
I liked the way Henning was in the background with cat, looking like Ernst Stavro Blofeld, while Glenn was playing. I could understand none of the lyrics, but the song sounded cool.
Glenn awkwardly saying "wow that's so cool" and the cuts that just completely cut off the dude who kept talking were hilarious. Not to mention a German guy making a random joke about polish people out of nowhere. Laughing my ass off
I made one out of an old gear of war game tin at 28" scail fretless tuned down low its a 3 string I built to do power cords and such. Still have some wiring tweaking and a way to balance it better as its super neck heavy
Glenn new rough mix, using axe FX for guitars, and yes programmed drums, but only as a reference track, live drums will be added after all vocals are done
Hey Glenn, I have an idea for a series. You should do reaction videos to metal bands that fans/viewers request whether it's their own music or whether it's music that's professional, if they're great, give em props, if they're meh, give em constructive criticism and if they are bass player level stupid, Rip em a new one. Love the channel, keep going man!
I made my 3 string from scratch... I used thick solder wire for frets... And kitchen drain cover as a sound hole cover. I'm actually pretty proud of it. I took it out in public just playing w/ it and made $20 just playing around with it.
Juicexlx yeah! First time I've heard that technique used was on Paul Gilbert's "Get Out of My Yard" but I've never heard a metal scream vocal haha that was dank!
I mean, just stick a mic on the kazoo, and make sure you get a huge wood one for the tone and a larger kazoo for a rounder tone. Then just plug the other end of the kazoo into and amp and kick up the gain and bass frequencies and you can even use a boss metalzone if you'd like.
Pickup resembles the Gibson "sidewinder" humbucker, or the "mudbucker," that they used on the EB basses. I know it's NOT that, but the construction looks similar.
Someone once described Line 6 distortion as "Kazoo distortion" and I had the brilliant idea of getting a line 6 spider and a kazoo with a vocoder pedal and comparing if the kazoo through the vocoder created a better distortion than a Line 6 Spider.

Please
I'll even send you different kazoos for testing
Old Goat
We need this
Yes
That sounds a bit like Glenn’s own personal guitar preset…good for sounding like Jack White or some other garage guitarist.
I was expecting this to sound shite, then when Henning started playing I was genuinely surprised by how good it sounded.
JDODify but why?
why what
I wasn't expecting it to sound completely shite, but I was also rather surprised by just how good it sounds!
The new standard in METAL!
Yeah, because tonewood matters...
I feel like they both secretly hate each other...
I don't think its a secret.
lot of that back and forth going on, stands out actually
I think they are secretly brothers from the same mother.
Daniel Acosta If Glenn shaved and they made a wig out of it for Henning I’m sure most people wouldn’t notice if they never said anything. That would actually be great for an April fools prank, they’d just have to dub over each other

Sounds like a Rob Scallon video in the making
Agreed, this idea has to happen now! Definitely does sound like something Rob would do :P
You could plug it into a SY-300 guitar synth.
Yeah, my office manager has a thing for Kazoos and I found one of these for her... I kept offering to bring one of my amps in for her but she was happy with iRig into her iPhone :)

This is probably the most fantastic can you play metal I've ever seen !
i want glenn to wear hennings sweater :D
The unicorn would turn into a narwhal.
Do you really want him to break the seventh seal to hell? Really?
He already gave the sixth a crack with using samples in this video! :D
What kind of porn is that?
German

Yeah, it was pretty damned impressive
Okay Glenn, I've been watching your videos sense the "how to record heavy drums" series. This is by far my favorite video now. The way you two bounce off each other is great. Keep it up man I look forward to more.
That’s crazy! I can’t believe how great that sounded...both clean and distorted.
3:22 Output jack, Glenn. Signal comes OUT of the guitar, goes INTO the amplifier.
Damn. That sounded WAY BETTER than it had any right to, both clean and with heavy distortion. I've heard _far_ worse from _far_ "better" guitars.
It helps that it was running through high-end gear into a high-end recording rig, though. Still, it's a bit like a sleeper car in that it performs better than it looks!
Captain Pantaloons its a high end amp but, i can tell. that guitar definitely had its own sweetness!
It is all about guitar player, not about guitar, right? 🙂

YESS! Subbed!
JanderVK Thanks man :)
Do you build and sell cigar box guitars?
I’m gonna geuss you get your parts from CB gitty right?
Dave Lanciani I build them and used to sell but now I just make them for fun and sometimes as gifts/commissions.
The clean tone of that little thing is insanely good!
Lmao his reaction to your joke about his birthday being 30 years ago was hysterical and awkward
i died when i saw it
„Yeah. It’s not funny”
Well life is complete for me. To day before noon I found out that that Gibson sg guitar with the head stock broken and retrofitted to the back like a stinebirger is not only real but is totally playable and sounds half was good and keeps tune and then I got to see Glenn play metal on a cigarbox guitar.
That head tap near the end 😂 taptaptaptaptaptap
Joao Emmanuel Torres u forgot a tappy tap, in there somewhere
Reminds me of Benny Hill.
Benny Hill for sure
Henning is the Jackie Wright to Glenn's Benny. The clip should have ended with Glenn being chased by women in St. Pauli Girl outfits, sped up with "Yakety Sax" playing in the background.
April Fool’s was seventeen days ago Glenn
Is this a Rob Scallon video?
Now I've seen it all. First Justin Johnson plays sick blues on a shovel, and Glenn coming out with a banger of a song on a cigar box.
Love it!
I like that Hitchhiker's Guide guitar. That's awesome.
Surprisingly entertaining video my dudes. Really liked it. Hope you're liking Germany Glenn and safe trip back to maple land.
Maple land😂
I think the tone of that Nazangi cigar box guitar is amazing. When Henning played it clean it had the most gorgeous timbre. I want one.
It's really interesting the kind of stuff people used for making guitars. i seen electric guitars in Mali west Africa that were made from big dried out gourds. lots of creative methods for making a homemade guitar. Rock on guys
I'm pretty sure that pickup is a Flatpup built by Elmar Zeilhofer. I've bought a few three-string versions of that from him. I agree, they're awesome.
That was cool. I did not expect that to work.
7:58 WHY!? 😂😂😂😂😂
Isn't it supposed to be good luck or something?
@@captainpantaloons its a sign of affection in anime
It sounded pretty good. Also the clean tone when Henning was showing the guitar was very nice

Seeing the versatility of these pretty much makes me want to start making them
The head pat was the best part.
Wow super fun video Glenn! Keep making these "Metal on a ____" videos this one was my favorite!
I just skipped straight to the example because I'm short on time but I've gotta say, I think this is your best drum sound yet. Compressing on the way in is really working.

This video is completely stupid and ridiculous. I love it! And to add a cliché, does it djent?
Mark Schwarz no jared
The short answer is yes.... try the middle 4 of an open G tuning, throw in some slide and off you go. Or try a 3 string cigar box guitar tuned to a low d tuning or g tuning in 5ths
"grab that piece of wood" and he does. Worth watching for that.
Then the grunt right after!
Very laugh worthy command
Hitchikers guide is lit
Life is Life.... the Meaning of Life the universe and everything ;-)
Graeme Sheridan 42
I've read every Douglas Adams novel... fucking genius.
That sounded awesome, especially the sparkly clean sound.
There are tons of us around the world that make all kinds of CBG's... They're a lot of fun to play... Ellmar's flat pickups are awesome!
I built a cigar box guitar when I was a freshman in highschool...04 or so..still have it...have a skeleton key for a nut, a coat hanger bridge/whammy bar and tooth pick frets...it's dumb but I still have it...old cremo cigar box
The drumss sound like fish on a dry land. Well at least the drummer is on time for rehersal's...
Glenn... the two of you together are just Hilarious!!!!
And that song was just Superb!
I credit Henning. He's actually an excellent producer.
Kudos for Henning then... But as I said before in another youtube post... You are far better guitarist (at least rhythmically) than you ussually accept. :)
can I buy this song? :)
Thanks for all the uploads, Glen. I love your videos and tho I am still a clueless musician. Your videos have helped me learn many things that I could’ve been oblivious to. Again, many thanks. Killer video as always. Cool shit. Loved the end.
Completely amazing. The clean sounded like a Strat to me. Very impressing.
Haha awesome \m/
Karl Golden duuuude i love your vids, your an awesome guitar player, rock on man \m/
Coffin shaped cigar box guitar for Funeral Doom here I come!
When Henning was holding the cat, he looked like a concerned step parent that "just doesn't understand this 'metal' thing the kiddos are so in to these days"
Also this just proves how beastly Revv amps are
5:28 "Grab that big piece of wood"
Like & Comment before watching crew, reporting in
Lessons learned from the "can it play metal" series: just get the right pickups and amps and you're golden.
Flat pup humbucker! I'm about to put one on my cigar box guitar!
I liked the way Henning was in the background with cat, looking like Ernst Stavro Blofeld, while Glenn was playing. I could understand none of the lyrics, but the song sounded cool.
I got a little tense there at the end when it looked like Glenn was about to smash it on the ground.
Glenn awkwardly saying "wow that's so cool" and the cuts that just completely cut off the dude who kept talking were hilarious. Not to mention a German guy making a random joke about polish people out of nowhere. Laughing my ass off
The clean sound of that guitar is outstanding.
Ah the Henning week when Glenn can put out 20 videos in one week
Lol
I made one out of an old gear of war game tin at 28" scail fretless tuned down low its a 3 string I built to do power cords and such. Still have some wiring tweaking and a way to balance it better as its super neck heavy
Great chemistry between the two, good video, should do more
You were on fire playing that thing! Your rhythm playing is a lot tighter nowadays compared to how you played on your earlier videos!
Love the air guitar on the cat in the background
I would like to see a new studio tour Glenn. With all the new amps and guitars it will be very cool.
Glenn new rough mix, using axe FX for guitars, and yes programmed drums, but only as a reference track, live drums will be added after all vocals are done
You can play metal on anything that has strings and pickups if you plug it in a good amp
That little ditty was bad ass Glenn. Pickup mic sounded metal as fuck!
That was f'in amazing!!! I think it sounded the best out of all the guitars in the series, I am totally shocked and surprised.....
6:45 - That's a beautiful sight right there!
OMG i love the "i fucking hate you Glen look he gives you the entire time.
You guys bounce off each other brilliantly take for experience. FICH DICH
Carnival in Coal (in The parrot stuff or Living in the plastic age) have actually used a kazoo in metal songs.
I made my 3 string from scratch... I used thick solder wire for frets... And kitchen drain cover as a sound hole cover. I'm actually pretty proud of it. I took it out in public just playing w/ it and made $20 just playing around with it.
Sounds a ALOT better than you think it would.
The clean sound is great, you could totally use that in serious productions and nobody would think it sounds out of place.
I can't believe it! That sounded awesome!
Wooooot!? Drum samples!!!!?? NOOOOOOOO
Hahaha! Well, that was kind of fresh & the screaming in the pick-up actually works.
Juicexlx yeah!
First time I've heard that technique used was on Paul Gilbert's "Get Out of My Yard" but I've never heard a metal scream vocal haha that was dank!
That really won the video-of-the day for me.
I want to scream at my guitar's pickups like that. LMAO!
Fuck yeah! Me too! It sounds awesome! Haha
Check out dead and bloated by stone temple pilots, the intro is sung through a les Paul into a Marshall lol
*Jayden Wybenga* Awesome song! I didn't know that little tidbit, though. Very interesting :)
4:12 "draw me like one of your French girls Henning"
Lmfao
You both make a great team. This was a good one.
It's an Original Flatpup pickup from Vienna, Austria.
Lol this has to be one of the coolest original riffs and tunes you've come up with man.. loved it hehe
I mean, just stick a mic on the kazoo, and make sure you get a huge wood one for the tone and a larger kazoo for a rounder tone. Then just plug the other end of the kazoo into and amp and kick up the gain and bass frequencies and you can even use a boss metalzone if you'd like.
I’m a simple man, I see Hitchhiker’s references, I click like. RIP Douglas. Nice Tele too!
this guy is GOOD. And he knows the insider tech terms, like the Lookey Inney Woundy thingie!
That was a way better turn out than what I expected great job!
Ty!
Wow 😮 not what I expected at all
Sounds badass, love the Revv and the drums 😉
7:30 Wonder how that thing might sound through a pitch-shifter, maybe a fifth down? If not even a whole octave...
Henning should come to your studio and do the judging videos for your contest!
Pickup resembles the Gibson "sidewinder" humbucker, or the "mudbucker," that they used on the EB basses. I know it's NOT that, but the construction looks similar.
I was waiting for Henning to go all "El Kabong!!!" on you. He is one hell of a good sport 👍
That was effing OUTSTANDING!
Whoa.. fuck.. I haven't even watched this yet.. but I build these sorts of things and just excited to see them here.
Harold Stubbs same
I make these guitars, 3 and 4 string these guitars are very unique, mostly used for blues music!
Glenn's "Hirschhausen" was really good.
I did not know you could do such voice, Glenn. Impressive! :)
That's a plugin!
Is it bad if i actually like this better than alot of modern metal?
Holy shit,Glenn your totally getting your metal on with that guitar. That was a great video man!!!
now i want the hening and glenn band. two of the 5 people i trust the most on gear
What a useful sound. Tone filed away. Thanks!
