Since I got my Sackboy agenda pushed already I'm gonna throw out there that Demon Turf has one of the most exciting 100% reward levels, even if not necessarily a "gauntlet" and falling more into Spyro 3's Super Bonus Round territory. As you said, not a lot of indies are fully realized enough to even get there so the fact Demon Turf manages to be an excellent game that harkens back to the best full adventure style 3D Platformers, while being in the relatively newly christened Expressive Platformer genre complete with all the modern trappings you might expect or want from them, plus a few of its own entirely new ideas that I'd love to see in other games, and then sticks the landing with an absolute joy of a victory lap at the end... I implore anyone that loves 3D Platformers... play Demon Turf y'all... its lonely at the top of the PS5 leaderboards.
I remember 100%ing Splatoon 3's story mode, and when I saw that it had one of these I was both super excited and horrified. I stayed up way too late trying to beat it. And since Splatoon's story mode is very much a 3D platformer as much as it is a shooter it fit like a glove. It's fun to have these badge's of honor to brag about to your friends and I hope we continue to see more of them.
splatoon 3's After Alterna is a good one. the game's singleplayer teaches you how to play competitively in multiplayer. and After Alterna is a "final test" of sorts after beating the base game. Unironically, I feel the fanbase got better at the game suddenly a few weeks after the games launch.
The level was hard but manageable to get through for me although on my first playthrough, I ragequit at the octoling section, but then a month later, I grinded for power eggs thinking I would be dying a lot, and I died a few times, and then I got to the octoling section and beat it on my second attempt
It was definitely super challenging. I kept failing until I learned about the bunch of clocks at the end that I could use to shave off a sizable amount of time, so I could take my time a little bit on some of the harder bits of platforming instead of rushing the whole time
I’ve always felt Galaxy 2 and 3D World had the best ones. They were very memorable. Astro Bot’s is good, but pretty short and not particularly unique. The reward is super funny, though.
idk if this would even be considered a "grandmaster level" cus its the very last level required to beat the game, but have you played spark the electric jester 3? it has a final level that straight up tells you that you might need a minimum of 30 minutes to beat it, and you only have one life, plus one life for each optional metal you got in the previous levels. its known as the rage quit stage.
Spark is a good shout that's not incredibly on my radar! I've played a bit of 3, but certainly never enough to have seen that this level was even a thing
Great vid Boltz! You are right with the Spyro levels. I like Spyro 1's final place Gnasty's Loot, because it's more of a celebration of what Spyro can do and you can have fun collecting gems without enemies. I would say Treetops is a final gauntlet level hidden halfway through the game disguised as a regular level though.
Id consider Stormy ascent from Crash bandicoot nsane trilogy, it was added as dlc but it originally was going to be a main level on the original ps1 version but the devs decided not to put it for the exact reason that it was too hard(and a tad bit unfinished) on the nsane trilogy you also have to beat the stage on time trial mode for the relics which means that not only you lose all the masks at the start but you also have to rush through it fast and without checkpoints. another level from Crash that to me feel like a gauntlet is Ant Agony from Crash twinsanity, its a 20 minute-ish that truly tests all of the player's skills, but this one is way more forgiving since it has a lot of checkpoints and is mandatory to beat the game
Kirby doesn’t do a ton of these for their regular levels (because the platforming, while engaging, is rarely all that hard), but the closest equivalents are True Arena (or any game’s respective analog). The real difficult parts of Kirby games (relatively speaking) are usually the boss fights, so it makes sense that that’s where the true “final gauntlet” lies, and Forgotten Land is no exception. It’s also really fun that you can slowly work your way up to it there, as the Coliseum has three difficulties depending on where you are in the story.
I think that Sackboy level gave me actual nightmares. I spent multiple days trying to finish it. Threw the controller, screamed, punched the couch cushions, you name it. I was soooo relieved when I finished it.
Sad that A Hat In Time didn't make this list. It's gauntlet isn't super long, but it's pretty good. That game also did something interesting where there's more than just the final gauntlet, but it has things called "time rifts" which are basically other gauntlets littered throughout the game.
Of the ones I've played, Champion's Road is my favorite from a "tough as nails but satisfying to beat" angle, though I also respect Odyssey's for how grandiose it feels, and the ending of it where you climb the New Donk City Hall replica (that's on the moon for some reason) is super touching as you and Cappy reminisce on the journey as a whole.
I'd recommend you play Corn Kidz 64. Its secret final level is downright sadistic and truly stretches the realm what you think is possible to achieve in the game to its limits. CK64 is just an excellent 3D platformer outside of that anyway, though.
I think corn kidz 64 has an incredible final gaunlet Level, It's hard really hard and puts everything to the test that the player learned, really good Game in generall and it only costs 8 dollars if I remember right
Shout-out to Neon White's Marathon level, it's the final standard level instead of a postgame challenge but it demands finesse with every tool in the game to maintain unbroken movement and gets damn hard near the end.
I did the "String it All Together" trophy in Sackboy (aka "Do all the Knitted Knight trials in 1 sequence in under 10 minutes") earlier this year to finally get that challenge off my back. It took me all afternoon of failed attempts, but I managed it. Never want to do it again, though.
It's definitely part of a Mario specific evolution - you could take it further back and argue that Funky is the precursor to Grandmaster in the same way!
I'll go ahead and speak for 3D Land's final level. I never unlocked Grandmaster Galaxy as a kid, and when I was younger I was unable to beat Champion's Run. So 3D Land's final level was the first big final challenge I ever beat. I'd have to imagine it's easier than Champion's Run, but it's still very challenging, and going purely off of memory, I think it's my favorite. Might just be because of nostalgia though.
ironically I managed to beat champions road twice at this point, but never managed to beat 3dland' s8-crown, my main struggle was the part with the green platforms and the firebars, I was playing on a 2ds and was very hard to distinguish qhich ones were higher or low and would always take damage from them. champions road has a exploit actually, you can put the game on multiplayer mode and get a white tanooki suit on your item box by going and dying a lot on any of the normal levels. this will remove all of the challenge and make the level not fun tho
Ironically enough the finale level for Yoshi's Island is probably the easiest out of all the bonus stages (the penultimate "Kamek's Revenge" is far more evil). The GBA version however added levels and the final one is certainly worthy of Grandmaster Galaxy status.
Sly 3!!! The Final Gauntlet of the Ancestors in the last chapter was a great final moment for that series. The boss fight afterward was a great finale as well. (Sly 4? What is that?)
Whenever I am reminded of the existence of SackBoy's Big Adventure I wonder why I never picked up such a great looking platformer, but it never takes long for me to remember that it was priced at 150% the price of a normal release. If it was released as a 75% priced release I defintely would've bought it though. It's oddly reminiscent of those PS3/Wii U releases that felt like they should've been PsVita/3DS releases.
For me the last level in Crash 4 was a gauntlet level, even if not by name. The way you have to utulise all of the masks very quickly is super challenging.
I totally understand the omission of 2D gauntlet levels, but shoutout to the New Super Mario Bros. 2 Impossible Pack DLC. I still haven't beaten that monstrosity of a DLC gauntlet.
Guess I should actually give Sackboy’s Big Adventure a shot. The slow speed of the game (plus the fact I’m a sad and bitter LBP fan) lead me to giving up on the game relatively quickly. But I admit, it does look quite fun.
Can't really think of a unique answer that outshines Mario galaxy or Odyssey with its send off for the fully invested, just really good stuff. Anyone out there looking for a really good 3D platformer, that is surprisingly in First Person, I suggest Cyber Hook because it needs more love. Not really a final gauntlet in the same way, but it has a mode to test your speed skills of stringing all the levels in one go. I know this is a video for 3D platformer, but the final gauntlet in Rayman Origins gave me the best feeling ever on completion. R:O graphics, sound, platforming, all are banger
Some players find Astro Bot's Great Master Challenge difficult and unfair. It just throws together a bunch of platforms and obstacles without any safe platform for you to take a breath, and it is more of a test of reflexes than mastery of all the platforming mechanics. There are no clearly defined sections that focus on a specific idea or test you on a specific game mechanic. The final challenge would be so much better if it was longer and divided into sections by checkpoints similar to the Badge Marathon in Super Mario Bros Wonder.
All i know is that level from super mario galaxy won where yopu had to get all the purple coins while the green platfroms dissapeared underneath you after the 100th try on the switch mario game collection i wanted to break my switch it was so hard
Lol, that's the luigi sprite level. It's actually reused in galaxy 2, except with a time limit. Grandmaster Galaxy is way harder than that level by a landslide though, especially with the daredevil comet star that adds a timelimit.
Say, isn't Crash 4's final level technically this? I've heard it described that way... A brutal gauntlet that uses every skill in the entire game, including a long midair segment that requires using the mask powers on the (literal) fly. It's pretty much the Impossible Lair. Although honestly, Crash 4 kind of splits the difference between 2D and 3D platformer, with that stage being extra heavy on 2D sections.
Crash 4's a tough one because the level I think you're referring to is the penultimate level (as there's a boss after it), and you have to go through this level deathless up to a point to unlock one of the VHS levels (the last one, assuming you've already collected every other one, but they unlock in order I believe). So even putting aside all the postgame completion metrics that Crash 4 has that even Crash fans said was excessive, it's got two different ways in which it's not the final level. That level's still absolutely brutal though, don't get me wrong! I'd argue the entirety of Crash 4 is a final gauntlet level, to be unlocked only when you've done everything in 1-3 - because Toys 4 Bob definitely wanted it to feel like a Crash fan's decades-late dream sequel.
@TheGoldenBolt Ah, now that's the classic nightmarish level of technicality. Mechanically that monstrosity of a level is exactly like this, progression-wise it... Really isn't, but then that bit about the whole game basically being an absurdly large gauntlet of Crash turned up to 12 is also painfully true. I don't think I'm ever seeing the normal end of that game, man. I developed some mean carpal tunnel recently and I think I might need a bionic left hand to even survive playing it casually.
Unless I'm forgetting about one, Hat in Time's completion bonuses are entirely cosmetic - the Death Wish DLC functioned as this sort of thing as far as I understand it, though I never picked up the DLC.
It kinda has one but only in the Seal the Deal DLC and its the tour time rift that unlocks after collecting all the time pieces in the base game and the DLC you own (I might be wrong about the DLC part though since I never played with just seal the deal). It takes you to mini levels based on the main locations in the base game. In terms of difficulty, I remember it being one of the harder time pieces in the game only beaten by a couple annoying ones in the Arctic cruise but still way easier than death wish. Other than the difficulty, it feels a lot like the levels covered in this video with their even being collectibles (storybook pages) that increase the difficulty of the level if you try to collect them but provide lore if you find them all in one playthough.
@@cal3835 Oh I think I remember this one a bit! And I don't think it required nyakuza time pieces. I never played any of the death wishes though so I assumed whichever eligible challenge would have been in those.
10:38 THAT'S a lie... You don't need to max out the star bit counter on the bank to unlock the "perfect run" star on grandmaster galaxy. You just need the comet medal star. You also need to have gotten ALL of the other comet medals and their respective stars WITH all other power stars collected through out the game, though... I don't know if these conditions were changed on the switch version of the game. If I was technically wrong about this... Then sorry. I just didn't really have to do that on Wii. I'm also aware that there IS a strange glitch that can occur that can prevent that last star from appearing even with the afromentenioned conditions listed. I'm not sure how it happens exactly, but I think it involves getting a missed comet medal on a beaten course LATER ON(...or.. basically out of order). If you missed one... THEN have beaten everything else, got every other power star THEN go back and do that one stage and collect the missing comet medal, THEN that glitch can happen(I think). If by any chance the way you fix it involved maxing out the star bit bank thing, then I apologize, I DIDN'T really know that... But either way, it WAS misinforming to say you had to do that in order to unlock the "perfect run" star.
@TheGoldenBolt Wait... OFFICIAL GUIDES SAY THAT TOO?! I've beaten this game from front to back on more than several occasions, I've NEVER had to max out the star bit count just to get that star. It's strange when guides do that. . .
Which Final Gauntlet platformer level is your favorite of the bunch? (Or which ones am I a fake fan for not mentioning?)
Since I got my Sackboy agenda pushed already I'm gonna throw out there that Demon Turf has one of the most exciting 100% reward levels, even if not necessarily a "gauntlet" and falling more into Spyro 3's Super Bonus Round territory. Splatoon 3's After Alterna
Champion's Road felt the most satisfying to finally beat, followed closely by The Perfect Run.
Want a final gauntlet challenge, play corn kidz 64 on switch. That one is a bit**
That Luigi joke hitting extra just a couple days after release lmao

I don't know if you would count it, but Eggmanland in Sonic Unleashed is when the game decides to get real and just throw everything at you.
Eggmanland itself is a sin - if it weren't mandatory, it'd count in this very arbitrary definition for sure!
So happy to see sackboy here. That final level was so hard and so rewarding, such an underrated game.
It was definitely super challenging. I kept failing until I learned about the bunch of clocks at the end that I could use to shave off a sizable amount of time, so I could take my time a little bit on some of the harder bits of platforming instead of rushing the whole time

every time i see little big planet i feel emotions
It’s weird, I always wanted to try Sackboy but I somehow always manage to completely forget it exists.
It's okay, so did they. Wonderful co-op time if you can find time for it, even with total non-gamers it hits well
