      Setup is not supposed to just create win.ini, this is similar to creating HKLM registry key on winNT or /etc on linux. If you don't have that file your windows3.x installation is probably screwed beyond repair (yeah, you have windowsNT6.4 instead, but setup creators could not imagine *that* ...)

    2:33 The timestamps on those floppy images bring me back. Obviously, there was someone out there curious to see how this early 90's software looked like, regarding it as already kind of vintage. And somehow, it was! I was doing the same thing around 2002 or so. In the XP era, Win 3.1 already felt completely archaic and absolutely outdated, and, again, it actually was. Compare that to installing, or even actually using Office 2007 (Office 2010 could almost fit in too at 9 yr old) today. Quite old, but doesn't seem that crazy of a thing to do. Things were moving so much faster back then. Exciting in a way, but so economically taxing for the end user.

    6:34 It would've originally brought Program Manager to the surface to show you that, but the stub of that in Windows NT and newer releases just converts .grp files, and opens the folder when a request is received to do what I mentioned it'd originally do.

      Indeed. He was able to run NT programs on 95 by using a software that adds some NT-kernel features to the 9x kernel, creating a compatibility layer. No such software exists for Windows 3.x and earlier.The best he could do is run a few Windows 9x programs using Win32s, which is a Win9x compatibility layer implementing a subset of the Win32 API under Windows 3.1/3.11.
      He might have some luck running some very basic modern programs using Windows NT 3.1 tho, and more using Windows NT 3.51

I did have it running a while ago on a early version of Windows 10. It uses TAPI in Windows, and it still worked perfectly for the most part.
    It was a neat product back the day, I was the only person who had a menu driven phone setup, where It would send a page to me (back before cell phones and pagers were a thing), or to leave a message... Very cool software for it's day.. I do still have a copy of it..and it runs on newest Windows 10 but, I no longer have a modem or a phone line to test it...

    You don't need to open otvdmw.exe everytime. you can open 'install' or 'install (noconsole)' shortcut file and the you can open 16-bit programs directly from Windows just like modern programs.

    I wondered if powerpoint installer crashed because you were running another OTVIDIM session with Excel at the same time of the installer. It is possible that Win.ini was OPEN during that session and could not write to it in another session (Installer)

    I never ran any of the Office suite at first when I was a kiddie. In home and my school used MS Works. It was also really good program. The software could using word processing then just easy to slaps in some diagrams or graph by putting any file or input numbers to make some diagrams on text document without starts another program. Doesn’t understand why Microsoft got rid off this and went over to Office suite.

    I wonder why did it decide to run in black&white mode?
    (this is evident with toolbar icons - win3.0-era apps had every icon hand-painted for monochrome, black&white, 16-color and 256-color modes)

      Is there a VDM that works on 32-bit Windows? I installed a 32-bit version of Windows 7 expecting that the backwards compatibility was on par or slightly worse than XP, but it turned-out way worse to the point that switching to 64-bit would probably be no different apart from some 16-bit anti-piracy.

    • @presidentkiller
      @presidentkiller 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's because prior to the year 2000, Microsoft used Acme Setup for their installers, which is really a 16-bit executable, even if you're installing 32-bit software. In 2000 they came up with Windows Installer which is completely 32-bit and that's why it works in 64-bit Windows.
