Thanks. Was looking to get my mother a string trimmer she could use. I use an EGO brand trimmer and I love it but it became obvious there is a rather large weight difference between most battery trimmers and this FSA57. This thing is super light. I’m really leaning towards this for her. Even the accompanying blower is lighter than all other options I see online. This really should be a top selling point. My one major concern was how hard would it be for her to reload the line. This makes it look easy enough.
You are right that both the FSA57 and BGA57 are nice lightweight units but still offering a powerful performance. With the new style string head that Stihl has come out with for the FSA57 I don’t think that reloading the string should be an issue at all. Also keep in mind depending on your location and dealer that Stihl has some promo’s out right now on the FSA57 which can help you save!
I noticed when you removed the cartridge that the white bsnd was not on it. Is it really necessary? Seems to me it interferes with letying yhe string out.
The design of the white band is to keep the string from unwrapping in the package and while handling. It is not necessary for the dispersion of the string. So no it is not necessary for the operation of the head.
With general use the deflector will build up with grass and dirt from your yard. The best way to clean out the guard would be with a screw driver or narrow putty knife. It would not be suggested to pressure wash the deflector due the electric motor that is in close proximity to the deflector.
Think you very much because the manual doesn't tell you anything about how to put strings in to your weedeater i think is crazy but again think you for this video
Do you know why as I use it it just quits letting the string out, tapping on the ground doesn’t release it, I removed the white band but it does not help. I’m using the pre-loaded string, also after I remove the white band does the string have to be secured in the notches before feeding it through the holes. Only had it for 2 weeks and I have to stop every 5 minutes to mess with the string, it’s tedious. I asked the guy at ACE for a trouble-free battery trimmer 😳. And do you feed it one on top and one on the or can both be From the top of those tiny black notches on the wheel. If you answer my questions I will subscribe.
The first thing that I would look for if the string is not bumping out is to make sure that you have the spring still inside of the bump head. If that spring falls out then the head will not feed the string out properly and you would have to manually extend the string which is what it sounds like you are having to do at the moment. The intention of the white band is the keep the string wound inside of the head as you are trying to replace it so that the string does not unravel. Therefore if you are going to remove the white band that is ok but yes you would want to lock you string into the notches, then insert your string into the eyelets, put the white cap back on and then give the string a tug so that it removes the string from the notches once the head is together. Lastly, based on this video you would not have to manually restring the head as you are referencing but if you had an older model (FSA56 or early model FSA57) that it does not have the easy spool head that is shown in this video then a manual restring would be required. When manually restringing the heads you would want to separate the string top and bottom, both lines CANNOT be ran out of the same top or bottom. Let me know if this helps and if you have any further questions!
HELP!? I had an older FSA57 before the feed head redesign and would get repeated line feed jams - from 2 or 3 to as many as half dozen per load of line. Stihl would not do anything except offer the 3 pre-loaded line spools - which still would jam 2 or 3 times per load. The second time I went to the dealer, he contacted Stihl and was told that there was nothing more they could do for me. LIKE A FOOL - I bought the newer FSA57 with the re-designed feed head. After the first new head, I've reloaded maybe a half dozen times and can't get through a load of line without a half dozen jams. Is it just that this consumer grade line trimmer is this poorly designed or are ALL string trimmers this bad? We bought the string trimmer, chain saw and leaf blower thinking that the battery commonality would be a good deal but the string trimmer has me using my monthly allotment of cussing and swearing in the first few minutes - I can rarely use it more than 2 minutes before the first jam. Do you have any thoughts - besides switching to Milwaukee string trimmer?
Firstly, I am sorry that this unit has given you such a headache so far. Yes you definitely had the right idea in mind by getting equipment that shares all of the same batteries that way it allows you to interchange batteries if you would need to use one tool for an extended period of time. From what we have seen in the store the first thing that I would check for is to make sure that the brash bushing is still pressed into the string head. If that bushing comes out then it will not keep the proper tension on the string and can cause the string to get sucked back into the head. The next thing that I would suggest is to make sure that you are keeping plenty of length on the string. If the line becomes too short then it can get sucked back into the head and cause a jam. Lastly I might suggest trying to use the silver "guard bar" that is on your trimmer. This will help you from getting too close to objects which again can cut the string off too short and then cause the string to be sucked back into the head. If after trying these 3 things you are still getting the same result or maybe you just are unhappy with string then I would suggest to ask your local dealer about the PolyCut 3-2 plastic blade head that is available through Stihl (roughly $20). This will eliminate the string head and change to plastic blades. Once again we are sorry for the headache and please let us know if you have anymore questions or if we can be of anymore help.
My dealer replaced the older spool head with the newer model which uses the trimmer spool mentioned in this video. Cost me about $18 for the part but it was worth it as now my trimmer is virtually trouble free and no more manual rewinding trimmer line around the spool. Also, make sure your brass grommets are in place - a simple hole with no grommet causes a LOT of headaches with trimmer line.
On preloaded head and only one green string is out, its impossible to guess where the beginning is of the other string. By then youve ruined the preloaded head. Pain in the butt! Also, mine does not work tapping for extra string. Never has. Yeah dissatisfaction . Mary kay
You can get rid of the white band if you want. The purpose that it serves is to keep your string from unraveling when it is not in the string head. It does make the insert easier to work with but also allows your string to “unwind” if you are not careful
couldn't be any more simple. these trimmer heads have come a long way. thanks for the video.
You’re welcome!
Thank you! You explained everything I needed to know, very clearly. Great job !
Thank you! We are glad it was helpful!

How do you maintain the clean finish inside guard?

Buy a new one and dont use it !
Just kidding

I'm guessing they do that on purpose so you have to go out and buy the replacement heads

What size of string can I use with it?
The recommended size is .080

I can’t get my string to go all the way through
I had that issue at 1st, but very lightly turned the black knob back and forth until the string went through. I just did it.

This is a cartridge replacement, not installing your own string.
I watched another video of the exact same thing only he cut that White Band off on the inside
