- This week I'm pairing the Ableton Push 3 in controller mode with the Native Instruments Kontrol S61 MK3. This combo is surprisingly potent and sort of feels like the future!

Nice setup! Have you tried connecting the Kontrol keyboard to the Push and using the Push standalone? I'd be interested to know if you can then control the Ableton devices with it?
The mk3 (and mk2) are both basically dumb midi controllers without the Komplete Kontrol plugin at this point. If you’re using it with push standalone it’s mostly good for playing keys. Otherwise I’d recommend a different controller
Ok Thank for the replay. Is there a midi controller you would recommend to use with an standalone push 3?@@DylanParisMusic
@ohhhliver455 that’s a good question, so far the ones I’ve tested have only been the NI ones. I should probably do more testing to see if they’ve been updated to support it in standalone. The Novation keyboards have a really tight integration with Ableton software, you’d want to do some research but I could see those pairing well with the push
Brilliant!
🖤🙏 thank you!
Hi Dylan,
Quick question.
How is that push 3(akai force in other videos) secured on that laptop stand. Is it sturdy enough for finger drumming ? Thanks
It just rests on the stand, it’s been great for finger drumming for all of my devices! I think I have an affiliate link in the description as well under my gears stands
@@DylanParisMusic just ordered using your link. I hope in your latest videos the mpc key 35 is also resting on this stand . Btw are you based of the UK ?
Would love to see if you could do a MK3 x MPC Live 2 setup! Standalone vs Controller Mode
ive had the push 3 for just over a month, and the main display screen has been cutting in and out, the unit will still play and control sounds, but the display has been wonky. Also had some weird "lagging" issues where I would hit a pad, and then like 2 seconds later it would register, that seems to have gotten better, anyone else having push3 issues?
I would recommend reaching out to Ableton asap for a replacement under warranty
thats a warranty issue brother. get a ticket in asap
@@DylanParisMusic noted, thanks, this looks like quite the setup, any issues with NI software "glitching out"?
Nothing dramatic on the glitch front, every now and then there’s some lag between loading a plugin and having it show, and sometimes the encoders default to a zero value but I have prerelease hardware so it may be different for retail buyers
This is the escat setup im running ! its soo goood :D I love this setup so much :)
Heck yeah!
Could I do this with my Akai force ?
Not really sadly. Not in the same way at all. You could potentially use the Ableton integration but it’s pretty kneecapped comparatively and unlike the mpcs the force doesn’t have its own software controller mode
Thanks!
Whoa! Thank you for the super thanks! 🙏
Wait, you can load 3rd party VSTs on a Push 3 standalone?
No he has it plugged into his desktop pc, using it as a controller. He says this around 3min 37secs.
Yeah this is controller mode, I do mention it a few times in the video
@@DylanParisMusic Ok, my bad then, not owning any of these machines (only a Push 2) I couldn't be bothered to watch 35 min of rambling on a single setup :)
No worries! 🙏😎
@@Drrolfski 35 mins of rambling? In the first 10 seconds, he says he's using the Push in controller mode, before loading any VSTs.
Hello Dylan! My setup looks very similar although it’s entirely different in the core and capability. I got a “robot arm” mounted on keyboard stand holding an iPad Pro with Logic Pro (or iPhone pro with sub c running aum ) over my Arturia keyboard mk3 61 key. I managed to strap a Roland minicube and Arturia mini fuse that hubs all the hardware to the keyboard stand. So it’s completely battery powered and autonomous setup I can play on the beach and mountain cliffs nearby, loud enough to fill the space. Of course I plug in the electric guitar into the interface for those chugs. My setup is inspiring live action. And it’s cheap.
My point being ditch the computer and those overpriced controllers🙃
Nice! I have some similar setups for my iPad as well, I just like some of the sounds and tools I have with Ableton and NI stuff :) I’m glad that setup is working for you though!
Basically my favorite setup for the past few years since MK1 and Push 2. I’ve upgraded to the komplete mk3 from the mk2 but I still have Push 2. Really trying to convince myself to upgrade but then I look at the price and I’m like nah. I do have a Maschine plus I never use and a MPC Key which I use sometimes. I may sell them for a push 3 but I don’t want to be disappointed if it’s not worth it.
If the push 2 is still working for you probably no need to upgrade!
@@DylanParisMusic Standalone is enticing but I do have a laptop, the most powerful standalone known to man 😂
@jacksp8de hahahaha facts
12:52 I’m quite skeptical, because the problem is not just to have the DAW ready for iPad, but also (and mainly) all the VST Instruments, effects and Sample Libraries. Right now, we still need to install them by using installer app, and it wouldn’t work on iPad. They would have to release an iPad version we can install from the App Store, or to give the option to install 3rd party app/Plugins without going through the App Store. Like many, I’m heavily invested into software for my DAW, I mean, I have thousands+ plugin (all legit btw) and right now I have 7TB of sample libraries installed on my 8TB SSD MacBook Pro… so it would be quite difficult to switch to my iPad Pro. Maybe 5 years down the road as you say, but personally I’m a bit more skeptical, not for technical reasons, I’m sure we could get M5 iPad Pro with 8TB Storage in 5 years… but more about software and the fact that not all developers will recode their plugins for iPadOS… Maybe I’m wrong, time will tell…
Neat. I have the Mashine Mikkro and the 61 Mk3. The mikkro is nice and portable but it's basically brain dead glorified (but well made) USB peripheral without a computer. There's something to be said for the standalone. Wonder if the Mashine + can do that? Nice use case of the two together. I mean if you take the portable computer/DAW out, that setup isn't outrageous priced and would be a good use case for performance/travel possibly? Maybe preload it with work done on the DAW/Computer first. Dunno. interesting concept though. Depending on your choices a laptop with storage and performance is gonna cost $1800 or more.
I will say without the computer the Kontrol s61 would be a basic midi keyboard and you’d only be able to run the Ableton suite plugins, not the nks

so where is it :)
Idk you tell me when you figure out how to get one and then share the secret with all of us 😭🤣
No one is talking about komplete mk3 it’s been 5 months why???
Idk I made this video recently and a new one a few days ago?
There was so much functionality removed compared to the MK2, the user base was really soured to it. Also, the initial batch of keyboards had severe update issues which bricked a lot of devices which didn’t help sentiment. All this, and NI then announced discontinuing support for the MK1 keyboards. The cumulative effect was a very muted release and negative view of the MK3. It’s gotten worse since the launch since most of the update deadlines were missed to add back some of the missing features. I really think NI hurt their brand reputation overall.
Maschine is what Komplete should've been 🤦♂️ The Dumbest thing NI did was splitting them
Yeah still feel like even if the user base was small, they are power users so abandoning them has a pretty large effect on the vibes around the company
