I love everything about this quilt, the Tula Pink fabrics, and the quilting Angela did that is reminiscent of embroidery patterns, similar to the eastern Europeans and Hungarians, kind of like a paisley and a stylized flower. I too do a "Happy Dance" when I finish a customers quilt. I think it's because the challenge to me is figuring out how I'm going to quilt it and then by the time I'm half way through the quilting I'm bored and ready to move to the next challenge. Thank you so much for sharing your techniques, it's helped me get through some difficult challenges.

You make it look so effortless. I am dying to try a long arm!! I have completed 2 - 48x58" quilts (one kaleidoscope and one strip city) for the babies of my family, my first I focused on piecing because when I told my daughter it was for her she wanted it as soon as I sandwiched the quilt, and the second the quilting because I had a free day. I did it with a Singer CE-150. I had attempted a couple smaller quilting projects in the past that I failed to finish and shamefully threw out when it didn't work (well that and my cat got to it - he had a bladder infection and preferred my sewing table to his litter box and I didn't have a separate sewing room.)
I finished them after learning things from you, I admit I may have binged a little~ (read: a lot) and got the inspiration to sew a couple quilts, I want to do a paper pieced quilt next, because you make them look fun, but I'm still trying to decide the pattern and fabric. I want to buy some but I'm trying to do a stash challenge lol.
I've even started window shopping for other machines now because I'm hooked on quilting (and I just got my singer this march for my birthday lol)

it's fun to use a longarm, for sure, but there are benefits to a sit down machine as well. The main thing is practice, practice, practice!! Keep at it though, because it's so fun!!

I love Tula's ''Slow and Steady'' fabric line and love the pattern on this quilt. I think that you made it even more beautiful with your awesome quilting skills!! I actually have the blue-raspberry selection sitting on my desk right now. It arrived on Friday and I have been admiring it for the past few days... and petting it, lol!! I'm going to have to put it away for a few months so that I can finish the quilts that I want to make for Christmas gifts and then I plan on making myself a byAnnie's Travel Duffel bag with it. I have the Sidekick ruler, but not the Super Sidekick... I may have to get it and buy more of this amazing fabric.

I forgot to ask you something... When choosing thread for quilting, do you take the backing into consideration? I have only machine quilted 4 lap quilts so far, and they have all had white backing, however the quilt that I am working on now will have Kona's Flamingo fabric on the back. The front is a mix of pink, the same flamingo fabric, aqua, white and grey.
I don't think about the backing at all. I figure that I can only worry about one side of the quilt, it might as well be the quilt top. I always make the bobbin thread match the top thread. But that's just my opinion, so do what you think is best!!

WOW you make it look so easy I just bought a Brother XR3340 Sewing Machine and I really want to learn how to machine quilt I have been watching lots of quilting videos from lots of different people and someone recommended getting a solid fat quarter and add batting and a back and just practice on it until I get comfortable or a panel of fabric with a print on it and practice on it ...... so that’s what I panel on doing before I start quilting on anything.... actually I want to make a small makeup bag with a zipper and I’m going to quilt it i’m just not sure if I’m going to hand quilted or machine quilted we’ll see how it goes I’m actually going to make quite a few of them for Christmas gifts if they come out good lol wish me luck 👍🏼

Beautiful as always Angela! I wanted to ask a thread question: I love Superior threads and I use Magnifico for all my quilting because it has proven to be the most reliable and consistent for me and my sit down quilting machine. I've made so many quilts with it and sailed right through all my intricate designs. I've tried So Fine several times, persevered through hints and helps from Bob and another staff member regarding tension etc. and no matter what I do, I cannot rely on it. It repeatedly shreds as I'm quilting - not even just when I'm doing a lot of travel stitching - I can sometimes quilt for an hour with no issues, and then have several within a few minutes. I ALWAYS use a new needle for each quilt - titanium coated and the recommended size (by BOB) for the thread, I use either the same thread in the bobbin or Bottom Line. Yet I see and hear so many other quilters using and praising the So Fine and I really want it to work for me because I love the way the 50wt blends in, but is there any other hint you can think of that I could try before I completely give up on this? I know different machines can sometimes react differently with threads, but so many people use this on long arms and sit downs with no issues and then there's me. I'm using a Pfaff sit down (made by Handi Quilter, same as their Sweet Sixteen) and I don't have this problem with any other thread. I often quilt densely and do a lot of travel stitching and still have no issues except with So Fine :-) Thanks!
Hmm.....I hate it when that happens! Sometimes turning the needle a teeny tiny little bit counterclockwise will ease some of the friction on the thread. Is is shredding or snapping? If it's shredding, a very small turn might take care of it. If it's snapping, it means that the top tension is too tight. Try those things and let me know if either of the help. We can definitely get it to run in your machine, just have to troubleshoot a few things!

I do enjoy it so much!! Is the fabric very busy? If so, I would do an allover design like a leafy meander. If the fabric isn't too busy, maybe echo one side and do a different filler in the rest!

Hi Angela! I visited the shop mid June and I must say it is a great space! I think you were out teaching the KC regional quilt show, so Becky was holding the fort...and she is awesome! Question...do you have any tips on dealing with quilts that have waves or puckering, or in general not pieced very well? I often have to put pleats to deal with the extra bulk then and try to hide the pleat with the quilting. I hope what I'm asking makes sense..
I love your tutorials... but my preference is your use of the home sewing machine to do the quilting. Watching you quilt on the home machine makes it all look do-able to a 'simple sewer' like me. Of course your use of the L.A. gives you more experience, but I can visualize myself doing my own quilting eventually.
I promise that I will have a range of tutorials on each kind of machine :) Is there a particular design that you are wanting to see!!

Did you change thread with the different diamonds, or did you use the green thread throughout?
What colour of thread did you chose? Did you change colours? I have eye spy blocks framed in white and black squares . All the primary colours!
I'm curious - how long would it take you to quilt a quilt like this? I'm assuming longarmers make the process faster than on a domestic but I'd love to hear your opinion :)

Do you quilt with dark thread ? When I use dark thread it doesn't look like stitches , it looks like zig zag . can you help with this ?

I don't often use darker thread. If I have to have a contrasting color, I try to use a lighter color. Like you have already seen, the darker thread doesn't have any texture, you just see the lines. Hope that helps!
How long does it take you to do a whole quilt in one go on the long arm?

Is there a reason the stitches are smaller when you are using a ruler on the diamond shapes as opposed to the paisley shapes in the blocks beside it?(time-8:03) I was wondering if you change it for the ruler?
Probably because I quilt a little slower with the ruler. Since I quilt in manual, my stitches aren't always the same length.
Is there a reason you don't stitch with a regulator?
I just happened to learn without one (my first machine didn't have one) so now it feels weird to use it!
So Angela, do you not have to roll the top on a bar too?
No I float the quilt top so I don't pin it on the bar.
I have a question for you. I have the original HQ Sixteen and have the stitch regulator. I use it a lot but I am ready to venture out on my own now...what percentage of speed do you use or would you suggest using when beginning. Love your Craftsy classes and your tutorials.
The speed that you would use depends on the design that you are working on. At the beginning, maybe try 50% and then go from there. Hope that helps!

Another thing that I should have mentioned is that when you adjust the speed, try not to make your hand match the speed of the machine, make the speed of the machine match your hands.
Angela Walters thanks for mentioning that....I have done lots of domestic machine free motion and figured that the longarm worked at n the same theory. I am going to work on a quilt this coming weekend and I will let you know how I do.
