  • Discover which foods can help prevent bowel cancer and colon polyps, two serious health problems that can have a big effect on your life.
8 Foods To Prevent Bowel Cancer And Colon Polyps
    8. Nuts
Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are found in nuts, can help reduce inflammation in the gut.
They also have antioxidants, which help keep cells from getting damaged by free radicals, which could lead to cancer.
Studies have shown that eating nuts on a regular basis may lower the risk of colorectal cancer and other types of cancer.
    7. Fish
Consuming fish regularly is linked to a lower risk of colorectal cancer. That’s because fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce inflammation in the body, and boost brain function as a side benefit.
And like the other foods on our list, fish can help protect against bowel cancer and polyps in the colon.
    6. Legumes
Eating legumes like beans, lentils, and chickpeas can go a long way in keeping your digestive system healthy.
That’s because a lot of things go into legumes, that may help prevent bowel cancer and polyps in the colon.
    5. Whole grains
There is some evidence that eating whole grains, may lower your risk of colon cancer and polyps in the colon, especially in women.
That’s because observational studies have shown that a diet high in fiber, including fiber from whole grains, plays a significant role in lowering this specific risk.
    4. Red Meat Substitutes
Several studies have shown, that eating red meat is linked to a higher risk of colorectal cancer, and polyps in the colon.
Furthermore, another study found that people who ate less red meat and more plant-based proteins had a lower risk of colon cancer.
    3. Vegetables
As kids, we’ve been told to eat our vegetables, and for good reason. But as grown-ups, we’ve come to take this simple nutritional truth for granted.
So, let this be an opportunity to remember why vegetables are so crucial to your well-being.
    2. Fruits
Scientists have found that eating a lot of fruits can protect against several types of cancer, including colorectal cancer.
That’s because they’re full of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that can help reduce oxidative stress, inflammation, and DNA damage, all of which can lead to cell damage, and ultimately, cancer.
    1. Yogurt and Kefir
There’s more and more evidence suggesting, that eating probiotic-rich fermented foods, like yogurt and kefir, may help lower the risk of bowel cancer and polyps in the colon.
For instance, a 2016 meta-analysis published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology, found that eating fermented dairy products like yogurt that are high in probiotics, was linked to a lower risk of colorectal cancer.

Thank you for an interesting list of healthier foods. I have had both polyps and colon cancer
some years ago, but I am OK now. I am trying to eat in a healthy and sensible way. I used to eat plenty of meat while growing up,- meatballs, steaks ....etc. Currently, I choose only chicken and/or fish and add berries and vegetables. Somehow in life we tend to be careful only after something unpleasant has taken place.

I just had a colonoscopy back in November of 2022 only 4 small polyps all removed No cancer that's good to hear. Make sure you get a screening I know the worst part is that prep I rather have it done and not know what is going on with my inside. Watch what you eat too.

    • @ronrichardson3103
      @ronrichardson3103 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I found that the prep wasn't as bad as I feard. Basically keep drinking small cups of black coffee for three days and your there put some orange juice in the prep mix . When I was on the table getting the camera the first 10 inches I enjoyed . The second 10 inches I thought it was coming out top of my head

@Patty Davis - My mother died of colon cancer at age 62 (diagnosed at 60, had chemo), and there was GI cancer in her parents and 2 of her siblings, so my siblings and I have been proactive and have had colonoscopies every 4 years, since age 40. I had a benign polyp removed last year (first-ever discovery since 2000).
I _haven't eaten _*_red meat_*_ since 1987,_ and only eat chicken or fish maybe once every week or two, and occasionally canned tuna, salmon or mussels.
My other protein sources are tofu, tempeh, miso, veggie burgers & dogs, extra old cheese, nut & seed butter, cashews, walnuts, sesame, pumpkin & sunflower seeds, plain kefir and yogurt (with frozen berries, coconut flakes, ground flax or hemp seeds, cinnamon), legumes (including edamame, hummus, falafel). I eat dark, leafy green and cruciferous veggies, like kale, spinach, collards - and always have a bag of julienned broccoli & cauliflower stalks, red cabbage and carrots on hand for salads, soups, stir-fries and smoothies.
My weakness is chocolate, so I buy 85%-95% dark chocolate, as "dessert," grating it over my bowl of yogurt or into a smoothie, or eat it with oranges, apples or mangoes. Steel-cut oats and whole grains (bread), including quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth round it out.
*TIP:* As for the *colonoscopy prep,* I was prescribed *_Bi-PegLyte,_* which is less arduous & time-consuming as PegLyte (but cost $30). With the *_Bi-PegLyte_* kit, you're to do a liquid diet the day before the procedure (clear juices & broths). Take the 3 pills (bisacodyl/Dulcolax) at the time prescribed by your doctor. Six hours later, you start drinking the *_Bi-PegLyte_* powder mixed with just 1 litre/quart of water (which is _half_ the amount as with _PegLyte)._ I found it much quicker to empty my bowels, so my sleep was less disrupted throughout the night.
I wanted to be lucid enough to view the procedure on the screen, but I was so relaxed/medicated, I don't recall seeing any of it. I've only seen the screen once - for maybe 10 seconds - the first time I had one.

    • @wholeshebang1
      @wholeshebang1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@ron richardson - I'm surprised you *felt anything* *_during_* the procedure. You would've been sedated enough to not feel the colonoscope (which is 48" to 72" long and 1/2" in diameter), even if you were somewhat lucid enough to view it (by one's choice). Each time I've had one, I've said I wanted to be lucid enough to view it on the screen, but I think I was only alert enough to recall seeing it once - during my first one in 2000, for about 10-20 seconds before I was "asleep" again.
I just watched an animated video of a colonoscopy that stated that the gastroenterologist might press on the person's abdomen, or air may be used to expand an area to get a better view. That might be what you felt.
By the way, the large intestine (colon) is 5' long, while the small intestine is 16' to 22' long. A colonoscope goes up as far as the cecum, at the juncture of the small intestine, and sometimes can go a few inches into the small intestine. That's where the gastroenterologist discovered the cancer in my mother. She died 2 years after the diagnosis, after surgery and taking chemo, and suffering incredible pain.

Fruit Protein Starch. Avoid frying. Question cow's milk products. Farm eggs. The order of foods in a day is as important as what you eat. Starch is the spolier. Eat starches last in the day. Avoid the sandwich habit.

Yes, sauerkraut is a insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber and resistant starches allow the intestines to produce butyrate because insoluble fiber doesn't finish it's digestion until after it gets to the large intestine. It's the butyrate that the intestines need to help repair this problem. He listed other insoluble fiber things that will work as well as sauerkraut for this. Kale, collard greens, and such. Although, the fermented part of sauerkraut has extra added benefits such like kimchi, or Kiefer.

My mother died at 62 of colon cancer, and both her parents and 2 siblings died of GI cancers, so my siblings and I have been getting a colonoscopy every 4 years since age 40. During my last procedure in July/2022, one polyp was found, and it was benign, so I was relieved. I'll continue to eat healthily, mainly vegetarian, with no red meat since 1987 - and I already eat most of what was mentioned, except fermented foods like kimchee or sauerkraut. I started drinking kombucha (fermented beverage) last year, and kefir, occasionally, 3 years ago.
I quit cigarettes/nicotine 20 years ago, though I worry that 2 of my 3 siblings still smoke cigarettes, and are in their mid-to-late fifties. Our father, a life-long smoker (pipes, then cigarettes), died at 79 years old of prostate cancer, after it moved to his bones and other organs.
I'm doing everything I can to prevent getting cancer, and other diet-related diseases. I've been cycling almost daily & *year-round* (even in snow) for over 30 years (in Ontario, Canada), and cross-country ski, too (since a teen). I swim lengths 3-4x/wk, do yoga daily, and lift weights 2-3x/wk. I'm a 62-year-old woman, and feel pretty good. 💪

Get your screening. Regardless of how healthy you think you're eating, get screened anyway. I eat healthy through the week and they still found a polyp. It was 3 mm big so they took it out. Im very active and eat a blanced diet through the week. I dont smoke or drink. So better to get screened just in case.

It feels so much tougher to afford to eat healthy (hell even just to eat crap).
Nice to have resources like this to assist in selection of foods that are they most important/helpful. Also I really liked the fact that the video recommends the fact that you can slowly implement these foods into your diet. That feels so much more realistic and is likely to help people not just say “f&#$ it” due to being overwhelmed attempting some drastic 180° diet change at the snap of the fingers.

In 2016 I found out I had uterine cancer. I had a complete hysterectomy. My doctor recommended that I see a genetic counselor since colon cancer runs in my family. I found out I have Lynch Syndrome which is from a gene that I carry. I have an 85% chance of getting colon cancer. I have been having yearly colonoscopies and am very conscious of what I eat. I’m not sure if eating healthy will lower my chances of getting colon cancer since I carry the gene, but I hope it does.
