The (Real) Story of Thanksgiving

- Thanksgiving is one of those holidays with what seems like a pretty clear origin story: the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts, where pilgrims celebrated the first harvest in their new home with members of the Wampanoag tribe who already lived there.
But Dr. Joe Stahlman, a professor at the University of Buffalo and a member of the Seneca Nation of Indians, says it didn’t actually go down that way. In this holiday edition of The Debrief, he talks with Michael Gargiulo about what really happened that first Thanksgiving, and why Americans should still celebrate the holiday.
"Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling,that so we might after a special manner rejoice together, after we had gathered the fruits of our labors; they four in one day killed as much fowl, as with a little help beside, served the Company almost a week, at which time amongst other Recreations, we exercised our Arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and amongst the rest their greatest king Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five Deer, which they brought to the Plantation and bestowed on our Governor, and upon the Captain and others. And although it be not always so plentiful, as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want, that we often wish you partakers of our plenty."

Happy thanksgiving. Unfortunately it’s not happy for me. Please pray for me I’m still struggling after losing my job for declining the vaccine. I’m a single mother with two autistic children. My husband passed away three years ago around this time. I’m so ashamed of my situation. It is only because of the kindness of strangers me and my sons still have a home and food. Im still suffering from depression. And stressed because of all the debit I’m in. I’m so behind on rent that i’m facing eviction next month. Please keep me in your prayers. I have faith God will provide!
