What I like about virtual reality is how closely related is is to psychology and to philosophy. The idea of presence, how you can manipulate your brain to see something "real", and so many other ideas of how virtual reality can be influenced and manipulated makes it a field that is super interesting from a educational perspective, and something I look forward to experiencing in the future!
I'm a senior neuropsych major, and I found this video pretty informative! I was surprised by the inclusion of hippocampal place cells, and this video struck me as reasonably well informed. Nice work.
It may be that it's not fully virtual reality, but it is endlessly funny to see people tossing themselves around and falling over when using the Oculus thing, especially when standing up :p
Agreed! Hell, there's even one guy that tried simulating driving drunk using the OR headset and Eurotruck. I think the real windfall for this rig (in gaming) is Horror games and Open World & Free Running games.
We're almost there.... A 1080p OculusRift with Kinect/PS4camera technology & properly calibrated games and our brains will be living comfortably in VR.
It would be so cool for me lol because I have bad vision in real life, so it would be cool to see the world without glasses... Well, it's not the world, but it would feel like it. Alright I need to stop typing before I give someone a headache.. >_
Virtual reality will become more developed, theres no doubt in that. People who say that it's dangerous or stupid or a waste of time are simply too ignorant, stupid and narrow -minded to even comprehend the vast wonders it holds, and the doors possibilities that it opens.
Just how much idiotic can you be? Training in V-R Is never similar to real-life . And even if it is possible, what difference will it make.Stopping progress on V-R because of some dumb reasons like-it'll be used for bad purposes , Is like saying, hey why don't we just destroy every single gun from the face of the earth. Well news flash bitch! Bad guys will always find a way to DO bad things. "Guns don't kill people.People kill other people." Same applies for everything else.
***** Everything known to mankind will be abused by mankind. Seriously. Dynamite was created for mining, not for killing people. The same with many, no, all other inventions. They were made for something specific, but everything can be used in other ways. When we would think "But what if someone abuses it?"... we would still be living on trees, growling at each other.
Different How about killing people with rods then? Okay, fine, ban them too. Oh wait a minute, people can even kill people with their BARE HANDS. What do you do now?
thank you ***** * i was just looking at the Occult and as one who is focal with the brain.. i had this question.. so very very timely.. * .. where do i find your 'reactions.. as i am watchin this in g+ .. on youtube..
***** Dont do it. the second you do, the commercial version will be out. Matter of fact, go ahead, buy the dev kit. It will make the commercial version come out faster lol.
***** That would be a mistake. Not because the commercial version will come out right after, but because the dev version has a much lower resolution than the commercial set and while people love the Dev version for what it is, the biggest complaint is the lower resolution screen used. Also the commercial version has an upgraded sensor system that tracks all head movement, not just turning but leaning and moving your head forwards and backwards.
groovesan I disagree. Sony will no doubt have Morpheus littered with stipulations in order to use it, as with the PS4, which it's designed to be used with. I mean, forcing players to pay for an PS+ account to play online, when virtually all games released now wholly incorporate online play? Kind of dick move, if you ask me. No doubt Microshaft will botch a attempt to compete with Sony's Morpheus, but when it's all said and done, Oculus is the company that isn't just trying to compete, they are literally trying to bring to pass the next evolutionary step in gaming, so it should be no surprise that Rift will likely be far more durable, enjoyable and long lasting, and without all the strings attached with Sony and Microshaft. As for Nintendo (the company I have stayed loyal to since my original NES) has completely shot themselves in the foot with the Wii-U. Utterly stupid move. Releasing a new console that's nothing but a glorified predecessor, which is basically what PS4 and XBone are. I would have thought N would be the ones to pursue a VR system, since they made a shoddy attempt back in the 90s with Virtual Boy. Maybe they're still licking their wounds from that, but the truth is, unless the big three get their heads out of their asses, Oculus the Meek is going to knock all three of them off their thrones in one blow. It should have been blatantly obvious following the release of GameCube and PS3 that virtual reality was the next step in changing the game (no pun intended). Nintendo 64 saw a giant leap for us by translating our 2D side-scrolling adventures into 3D environments with the freedom to go anywhere we wanted. Once word gets out how immersive and fluent the Rift gameplay is, *no gamer* is going to want to be sitting in front television playing a "3D" game on a 2D display. The days of "playing on our televisions" is coming to an end, and Oculus is poised to usher in the new age of gaming with no clear, competent competitor in sight. I'm really looking forward to next year, when Oculus is rumored to make their official consumer release of the Rift. 2015 is going to be an interesting year for Sony, Microshaft and Nintendo. Until then, as AlphaOmegaSin says, "Game the fuck on!" :)
I saw a video where a Japanese scientist made headphones that could affect peoples balance... that would be an awesome addition, if people were in a safe position and couldn't fall
I didn't think I could find it, I realize now that they actually say they plan to use it for stuff like this search : Japanese scientist create mind control earmuffs or /watch?v=LUl6xHG8F7M
Already half way there. We have full-body tracking, eye tracking, finger tracking, devices that allow us to feel heat and cold, devices that allow sense of smell, etc.
Yup... But we still can't feel in-game like we feel IRL. That's maybe because It's not safe for such device to directly have a link with with Brain just like they mentioned in the series :(
UmbreonTheNerevarine Ahhh, not entirely. In fact, the easiest method to achieve full immersion is to be able to control your dreams. And in a way, you are paralyzed in dreams and you are still okay.
Excellent -- the most important insight is that "the brain seems to readily accept a virtual body as its own," indicating its just a matter of time until the technology to create a robust immersive experience exists.
Lol since it would be 100x easier to trick a rat into thinking virtual reality is reality, I bet they would have waay more fun right now in the present than us XD
Factual Basis of Information. You shouldn't let false information get around the Internet, les it become a hassle in the future, similar to the 30 minute rule.
+░KenLinx░ It wont trick your conscious mind. But humans are more reliant on visual cues than other animals. So it might be more stimulating for us than rats.
Oculus Rift + that walking / running device you had in a previous video? Even if this stuff doesn't take off or speed up fast enough in the gaming community - these tools could be DRASTICALLY important for military testing and training.
I'm definitely looking forward to the day where I can play a video game while simultaneously learning and producing educational/engaging/relevant material for others to use and play with. War is over, if you want it.
I was at a science museum a few weeks ago and a piece of tech for paralyzed people caught my eye. It intercepts brain signals and re-routes them into a computer to control software.
***** It quite possible. The thing though is tricking the brain to not make your body move, so you don't hurt yourself or someone in the real world while playing lol.
chrysmania Well if they can induce a coma maybe they can make it induce temporary paralysis to make it work D: Then again the health nuts out there would go crazy lol
That's really cool that it is working for people with the phantom limb pain. I watched a doc a couple months ago that showed how scientist V.S. Ramachandran treated people using mirrors to reflect one half of the body giving the illusion that the missing limb was still intact. This had the effect of reassuring the brain so it would stop sending the painful nerve impulses for which it hadn't been getting any reply. Pretty amazing stuff... VR has been dormant technology for too long. I remember they head a VR game at the mall like 20 years ago. It seems like it just vanished. Glad to see it's on the comeback trail.
***** Makes me wonder if we are the fore-fathers, or has this been done repeatedly in a paradoxical way? man creates technology, technology enslaves man, man creates technology, etc, etc.
I just only hope then that technology will give us super powers in the next Matrix within the matrix then, cause if this is the matrix it sure as hell is boring! XD
I have a Rift (developer version). It's only a step towards contact lenses that do a better job. Have a look at the TH-cam video called 'Sight' uploaded by cgbros
Rumeysa Durmaz Anyone can by the Rift now for $300 at www.oculusvr.com/order/ Caution, the image is very grainy. There is a sensation of 'being there' because of the head tracking that makes the view change as you move your head in any direction, but despite all the breathless publicity hype and exclamations, it's NOT totally realistic, because of that graininess and the view size is about what you'd see from a swimming mask. I like mine, but you might like to wait until the consumer version appears later this year. Especially check the resolution - Mine is the (developer version) is (see Wikipedia) 1280×800 (640×800 per eye),Consumer version: ≥1920×1080 end of next year approx. Bruce Thomson in New Zealand.
I see a lot of potential in virtual reality. Visiting places across the world, going on rides that would be too dangerous to build, going on adventures, practicing skills like surgery or sports. As long as we're careful, we should be fine.
It would be awesome if someone can create a gaming device like the "NerveGear" in SAO.... maybe the Oculus Rift and Sony's Project Morpheus are a step closer to creating such a fictional device...
***** you dont really know that... I mean how fast did the technology evolve from a PS2 to a PS4? considering graphics and online gaming.... and how fast did Apple evolve the iPhone 3G to an iPhone 5S? so much improvement in a mere 6 years... Im dont know if a "NerveGear" is even possible, but if you consider how fast the technology is moving forward it might actually happen
I feel like if you get maybe somewhere fully immersed in a virtual world that it may effect you, maybe not physically but maybe mentally and that in turn can *maybe* affect you physically.
I started gaming very very young and I can tell you there is definitely a mental bridge that you can cross if you become too submerged in the game. After a certain length of time you just start living and breathing the game as if you are in it. I do not get the same connection I did when I was younger, but I feel that has more to do with my mind getting bored with all of these repeated sequels.
Jared Torrico That sounds pretty awesome. Sucks that it doesn't feel that way like the beginning. I had the same experience with a different hobby. And like you said, I don't feel the same as when I first time I experienced it.
Jessy Morin I've seen a study of this on the National Geographic Channel along time ago. The guy did all that stuff and at the end. He put a knife near the dolls crotch as if going to stab but and made the guy flinch and freak the fuck out. Of course he didn't really stab the doll or anything because who knows what would've happened? The patients brain would've probably thought that he's been stabbed and immense pain starts happening in that area but he wasn't really stabbed at all. It would be cool to know what would actually happen but hurting someone mentally and possibly physically would most likely give them some kind of trauma.
I've had the chance to play with the OR DK2 for a few days and what really surprised me was that I could actually *feel* some of the digital motion, which appeared most accurate in the Titans of Space demo. It actually made me feel sick after some more intense demos. I don't see the potential just yet for commercial gaming use but if it helps people with phantom pain get better, it's an amazing medical advancement.
Where as this when motion sensor games was becoming a a thing, like 5 years a go. This is what true motion sensor games should be like not the dildo you use in wii
Until they find a good way to trick the vestibular system too, Oculus VR will just be a heavy-hype motion sickness simulator, one that's exceptionally good...
The positional tracking of the devkit 2 really lessens the motion sickness and for the consumer version it's basically gone altogether - barring folks who have real-life motion sickness. There are also plenty of peripherals coming out like the virtuix omni and cyberith virtualizer that are allow you to actually be walking/running in real life to control the in-game avatar - so no need to "trick" anything.
Daniel Wolf "and for the consumer version it's basically gone altogether" Can i borrow the timemachine you used to test the consumer version? In all seriousness, no one can know how much simulator sickness the Rift will cause. "so no need to "trick" anything." First you describe a potential way to trick your body, and then you say that there is no need for it. What is up with that?
IsoMacintosh According to the devs motion sickness is basically not an issue anymore. Of course, that's not a terribly large sample size, but yeah. As for tricking one's body, such devices are NOT tricks since your body IS moving, running, walking, jumping, etc. The only trick is on your mind since that's basically what VR is by definition.
Having worked with both devkits now, I can say first hand... IT IS NOT a motion sickness simulator. For some of us, the dysphoria that causes motion sickness can be really fun for periods of time. I'll be using the Cyberith myself, and expect to be ready for a break every 30 minutes to an hour, and I'm sure that's the way most people will use it as well.
IsoMacintosh Chill ***** knows what he's saying, the new dev kit has largely fixed the problem, and it is said the consumer version will be even better. The entire idea of the dev kit was to quickly get developer's ready for VR, not to fully demonstrate the feature and capabilities of the oculus rift.
Played with this at my work the other day and it was amazing! I will be rebuilding my current rig and buying this to make sure I have the best experience once it is released.
Wouldn't it be a bit dangerous if we became FULLY immersed in a video game? Perhaps some could easily switch between worlds, but what if someone, perhaps unstable, started to wonder which world was real? The Rift with a full body suit and headphones is very, very close to a realism it seems. What if we put a moving floor under them? hmmm.. so many questions
I don't think unstable people would be using something that places them in a virtual reality. They're unstable as it is. If you truly know which world you are in you shouldn't have to worry about it.
Matrix31337vr True. What if it becomes too real? For example, the Matrix basically asks this same question. Have you ever had a dream so real that you were sure it's real? What if this VR type stuff comes to that point? It's really not trying to say we shouldn't do any of this, just pointing out interesting questions. Also, your name... Highly relevant.
***** I know everyone has dreams, but I don't really see mine so I don't know what a 'real' dream feels like. I think its just like every other game but it feels more real. Your not going to get stuck between what worlds are real and what aren't.
MY big question is , does it harm to the brain because our balance sensors dont work? If we fly airplane in VR and we have perfect score, are we going to be good same in reality?
I predict first person movies compatible to these new head mounted VR devices. Imagine how cool would be to watch movies like The Blair Witch Project or Clover Field Monster with Oculus Rift... Man, this is the next big thing for sure!
It's quite enjoyable reading all these debates from two years ago on whether virtual reality will be possible like in SAO. I used an HTC Vive for the first time on Friday at the arcade and I was quite impressed how on track we are. All we need now is some more immersion hardware and higher pixel density screens.
I wonder if we'll ever see a SOA like VR for gaming and other uses? The "easiest" way I see this become a reality is by inducing a player in a "dreamlike" state, basicly, you are sleeping a lucid dream in an environment that is defined for you by a system... We all know it's possible, as certain magnetic or sensory stimuli can affect our dreams, but to do this we would need a better understanding of the human brain to be able to produce and manipulate a dream in such a way that it feels real? toughts anyone? And obvious trolls, please stay away, I'dd prefer to have actual toughts and idea's on this subject :p
Interesting idea that we would use a dreamlike state for virtual reality. Because if you know about lucid dreaming, you also know it's not a simple thing to do. Therefore unless players would actually train to remember their dreams and to have control over their actions in it, the system should not only manipulate the dream itself, but also our ability to remember and control it. P.S. hope you understood what I meant, I'm not english.
actually, yes, that's exactly what I was talking aboutn it wouldn't be hijacking our neuro senses, like SOA and ACCEL WORLD do, but the effects would be the same, and I know it could be done, given we know how to imprint images, sounds and in a form, memories into our mind, but putting our body in a sleeping state, so it wouldn't effect the outside world. And your English was great ^^ It would be an awesome experience^^
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/272991.php if you could combine some of this new tech into letting you control an avatar in a fully rendered world, then you wouldnt need lucid dreaming. Just the ability to see hear and feel what the avatar is doing, but control it in this manner.
Actually, I believe that NerveGear from SAO is very realistic, we just need enough understanding about nerves to be able to manipulate them with technology. And I believe that in some 15-20 years, it will be possible considering technology based on the human nervous system that we already have (Like robotic arms for example).
Vuk Protic you actually make some valid points there, and it helps with moving around in a virtual space, but how would it trigger you're brain into thinking certain things? Like my "dream" theory, you try to use memory to build the world and such, though I do think that has it's limits, but how do you see the world and it's inhabitants build with an actual NerveGear replica?
I love these intellectual videos keep them coming gameSpot!! As for your question I don't know if we'll ever reach fully immersive virtual reality but I have a feeling we probably shouldn't. Perhaps however it would open up realms of insight further explaining our desultory understanding of what human consciousness and experience really are.
Lol seriously. Think about it. People WILL trap people in their basement from birth and strap an oculus on their heads and have them live a virtual reality. It will happen. Guarantee
Or people will neglect their children all the same. There is literally no difference between that and what they do with kids and tv's right now.... except with the rift the kids will have a more interactive childhood opposed to just looking at a rectangular tv. So your point is moot.
I wonder if this guy has ever even used a VR headset. Who remembers everything about the last Xbox game they played or tv show they watched? What matters is how much fun you're having in the moment, and the Rift is the best thing ever invented for entertainment. It's like you're really there!
For me, stepping into the realm of working, actual virtual reality (an oxymoron, I know) during my lifetime is incredibly exciting. As the technology becomes more available and price points become lower, it seems more and more that we're on the precipice of a movement in gaming. Seeing how we (might be) on the verge of a gaming industry crash, at least on the development side of game production, this is a great shot-in-the-arm.
answer me this what if lets say whenever we come out with full working VR where you cant tell its not real witch i pray they'll have in my lifetime but WHAT IF you get in the vr and dont want to come out ?
Honestly think it really depends on the person. Some people will have an easier time than others getting fully immersed. Kind of like a movie and having empathy with fictional characters. I can't wait to get into a VR game. So excited have been waiting on this tech for a long time.
Oculus rift, sennheiser headphones, motion sim, full body IR tracking and game/sim textures made from photographs. That should fire up some more place cells and it sounds like alot of fun
I have a question. What if they made like a "Audio Rift" something that pressurizes the ears to give the feeling of what is happening in the game? In no way do i say this is safe or that anyone would make such a thing; but would it work?
I don't think we have the technology for that yet, although I don't know enough about it to say for sure. Perhaps we do know enough about our bodies to manipulate it, perhaps we don't. Although it works fairly well as is w/ 3D positional audio, wearing headphones of course. I'm sure if it would make a substantial difference, someone would have started / tried to start working on it by now.
Ethereal Sun mimicing the air and sounds on our ears is surely a good idea. but the fact that we cant feel our bodies walk around in these virtual spaces probably has a lot to do with why we are so unconvinced. That being said, it may be the case that an individual who has been paralyzed their whole life, i.e. could never walk, would have a much more immersive experience with the technology
Motion and sensing are more complicated than that. But you are on to the right track though in terms of the senses. If we want full immersion virtual reality then we are going to need to hack the all of the senses via the brain. Blood cell sized devices are going to be the means to do this.
Hmm, is this guy explaining it wrong, or did I think the Oculus Rift functioned different? He says the screen essentially just shows the same picture to both eyes, but each pushed slightly to one side, explaining it like stereoscopic 3D. I was under the impression that the Rift rendered each eyes image different - each with a slightly different perspective on the scene (like real eyes work, this is how we can see depth in the real world). This is also why it requires 60FPS, as it needs to render twice the amount of images as normal (one different for each eye), and should run at at least 30FPS per eye. So am I getting it wrong, or is he?
Well, maybe he didn't explain it clearly/well enough. What the lenses do is show each eye the half part of the screen corresponding to that eye. It doesn't use two screens, but one that is divided for each eye (this is also why resolution can be a concern). That's its way of producing stereoscopic 3D, each eye sees the same scene with a slight difference in perspective, like you said.
KeviNOlighT you don't seem to be explaining it very well either. You cannot create a 3D effect with one image. I assume what you mean to say is that there are two images one screen, and the lenses just focus the two halves of the screen(which have different images on them) into the eyes for better effect.
alienzen You can make a 3D affect with one screen. That's what the gyroscope is for, so when you tilt your head your image changes along with your perspective. If the perspective does not change as you change the position of your head, you're essentially looking at a monitor. But because the perspective changes as you move your head, it gives the feeling that you're actually looking at a 3D world.
Rat study is flawed though on account of imagination being an excluded factor in the analysis. An imaginative individual is more likely to get absorbed into the game world based on visual stimuli alone vs fully mapped sensory input, as any adept reader can agree. The more willing an individual is to be tricked, the more likely they will be after all. So I'm sure that while imagination may not directly affect the activation of those "place cells", it could be enough to compensate for the difference between virtual reality and real life- to an enjoyable extent at any rate. Would love to hear some opinions on the matter.
This is what I was thinking. I'm just starting out in hypnosis, and I'm finding it's incredible to what degree our imagination can override sensory stimulus.
You know, despite the stigma associated with hypnotism, I have heard that it can have profound effects on certain people. If nothing else as a "super-placebo", which in itself would be something, sounds like a really cool skill to try and develop for personal growth. But aren't language patterns somewhat of a subset of psychology? I've heard of gestalt psychology, that might be something to interest you, especially in sales if you do anything at all with marketing, though perhaps the philosophy has some bearing in a social sense. Right on with what you're doing man.
Yeah, the stigma is mostly thanks to Hollywood and the works of a few pre-20th century practitioners. Modern practice is well-grounded in science. The oxford handbook of hypnosis is a great resource for the scientific evidence. Gestalt psych (among many other clinical approaches) was influenced by Milton Erickson, the grandfather of modern hypnosis. It's funny because the placebo effect is essentially hypnosis. It's an authority figure giving a suggestion which shapes your experience that follows at a fundamental level, suggestion being the primary vehicle of hypnotic intervention. Yet everyone accepts the placebo effect, and still have a knee jerk reaction to the word hypnosis.
My Oculus DK2 is on the way as well as my KOR-FX vest. I'm excited to see what the combination of the two does to immersion in VR. If you haven't heard of the KOR-FX I'd check it out. It's pretty crazy.
I agree, I use a sony hmz t2 and an air mouse on my head, the effect is probably as good as the oculus if not better, but whilst playing outlast I almost died !
MY BRAIN REALLLY HURTS FROM all the god damned speculation, the lying, the lack of information, the backtracking, and the wishful thinking. AND THE GOD DAMNED LISPING
Do you know how bad this is going to be for your eyes? try holding your iphone/ipad two inches from your face for many hours and see how you feel after. I imagine you will feel like shit. Headache, burning eyes, blurred vision, motion sickness, maybe a sore neck and shoulders. When the vritual boy came out there was a warning that you cant use it for more than 20 minutes at a time safely, now the screen is bigger and brighter. If you dont want to go blind in 20 years, i would stay away from this thing.
I'm sure there are some barriers in place to prevent you burning your eyes out, and the screen will be softer so it doens't cause this. That is a problem, though. The stereoscopic 3D helps aid this issue a bit by giving your eyes depth, something natural they can turn to, but it will be somewhat of a problem.
trickykid3000 Did some research. There are two optical lenses, one in front of each eye. The optical lens distorts the images so that light does not appear as sensitive to your eyes. Your eyes perceive it as being relatively far from your eyes. So it is effectively not the same as staring at your monitor screen from 3mm away. Also, the displays and everything are fine-tuned to not be uber-eye-straining.
your iphone is build to be viewed at from a certain distance. This is build to be viewed at from up close. People have been saying shit about tvs back then and everyone can still see just fine.
I'm interested as to whether HTC and Valve's Vive produces a greater activity of place cell percentage due to Vive's great motion controllers and being able to walk, run, kneel down, crawl, jump, and interact in the game world. With Oculus Rift you're just a spectator in a virtual world unable holding a controller or keyboard being unable to interact in 3D (well, until the Oculus motion controllers are released then we'll see how those are).
I think the best vr experience would be oculus rift, 7.1 headset, kinect, and also some sort of suit suspended in a gyroscope. This suit would change it's material characteristics when particular events happen in the game (eg getting shot). If you get thrown about in game, the large gyroscope suspending you will tumble you around. Contacting surfaces like the in game floor, walls and objects will have an affect on how the suit restricts you. Climb a hill will actually feel like climbing a hill.
If your brain believes something to be real enough it can effect you in actuality, like if you have full sensory in a VR and you die in the game, you can actually die in real life, heart can fail due to the realism of it. Think about it like this, many cases of people being sick aren't really sick, there's no virus or bacteria, the patient merely believes they are sick so the body reacts as if it is sick and shows all the symptoms of being sick. The brain is a very scary thing.
***** Really? There's plenty of such cases, just do a little research. For example, in cases colloquially known as a “phantom” or “false” pregnancy (pseudocyesis), women can have all of the symptoms of pregnancy, including significant weight gain, enlarged breasts, nausea, and back pain. This is most often caused by an “intense desire to get pregnant,” which in turn causes the brain to misinterpret those signals as an actual pregnancy, causing changes in the endocrine system and leading to the secretion of hormones which translate into physical changes in the body. I can also add in my own experience where I had a particularly bad panic attack (I have an anxiety disorder) because I believed I was having a heart attack strongly enough. The mental stress was so severe that I actually did end up going into sudden cardiac arrest, even though the whole thing was all in my head -- there wasn't actually anything physically wrong with me. So, yes, I could easily see someone dying from a mental shock caused by a particularly immersive and realistic video game. It's definitely possible. People susceptible to such things probably shouldn't play VR games, or at least shy away from particularly realistic ones. The brain is indeed a scary thing, as I have witnessed firsthand.
what i think would be better yet is to have the brain removed... connected on a life support for it complete with brain computer interface.. and have your brain connected into a cyber form of anything you would like to be
DreableNeebal10 technology is very close to being able to take a brain out and keep it alive and healthy.. and not a virtual reality..but an actual reality
DreableNeebal10 I do realize that they have a lot of planning to go still in order to live in a different form...there are many trans-humanists working on this as we speak..even 2045 is talking about it ... soon the world would no longer have to be limited by what can be real or not .. and as for different creatures..that would be a possibility as well (all that would be needed are people that don't want to be human and to want to be something else) ... then even farther they start using bio engineering to where the real life looking form can go from being cyber to being made of flesh and blood
The ironic thing for those bashing the "SAO is coming" commenters is that the only way that true "presence" VR like mentioned in the video will happen is if they follow something straight out of sword art online, the way to make place cells activate on a level comparable to real life is to completely anesthetize or "knock out" the person while they're using the VR headset, which as anyone who's seen SAO knows; is how the nerve gear works; making you unable to move for safety reasons in the show. The fact that you are in a trance of near unconsciousness will get rid of the suspension of disbelief type effect that happens when playing VR due to you "knowing" that your not really inside the game no matter how realistic it looks. The fact that you feel the oculus on your head and the wires brushing your side etc.. is what keeps you from believing fully in the VR process, being in a hypnosis style trance state brought on by binaural beats and suggestion for roughly 20-30 minutes tops would put you in a state where you would literally believe 100% that you are INSIDE the game. So, tldr, hypnosis through binaural beats with audio suggestion is the only way we'd reach true place cell activation VR levels anytime in out lifetimes. But the good news is that we've had that tech available for quite some time now :D
These types of screens put nothing out but light, your eyes will catch the same amount of light. It's really not physically possible for it to damage you, though it might make you motion sick.
Princess Umi Utsukushii Alright, thanks for that, I was just curious as to how these things operated on your eyes. I will probably get one of these once the consumer version is available for retail.
***** hey be careful if u get this because it may give a attack or freak u out because i bought one and my sister freaked out she wont even touch my stuff any more
***** Don't listen to Princess Umi Utsukushii. The main reason these aren't available for retail, is because of availability. No one wants to mass produce them, basically. The second reason is because early versions of virtual reality headsets were causing massive damage to the participants eyesight. The problem isn't the light that it gives out, that's nothing. It's the fact that your eyes are SO CLOSE to the screen, and your eyes can't focus on them. The damage comes after you take the headset off. It's very hard to focus the world around you. Everything's blurry. Sometimes this can be permanent. If you value your eyes, you need to be aware that these are very detrimental to them.
Whenever someone asks "will we ever have full cognitive immersion", I think, of course we will, but those other necessary parts like haptic feedback and simulated inertia are probably way way off. And will likely come in the form of electrical input into the brain itself to trick us. But forever is a long time and we'll figure something out eventually. Until then I'm more than content with full 3D field of view and movement representation. The mere fact that I get to be alive for this milestone in technological advancement is more than thrilling.
Checked it. It's good and also bad at the same time. It's understandable as it's an indie game and also because making a game like this is not hard, it's super hard. But the good side beats it as we can explore a lot of things. Love it. I'll wait for this game, badly.
I think its a bad idea, some people will never want to come back to real life, we all the know we could live in a better reality, so if we can give you the chance to go in this better ''virtuel'' reallity will you want to come back?
So... are you really saying we shouldn't use the oculus...? Because that would be a HUGE waste. Yes I can definitely see that happening with the oculus, but its already happening without it too :P I don't think much will change besides it changing the gaming experience. (and being used in many other things)
I go on holiday quite often, 6 times last year. Almost every time i question why i didn't book a extra week or think this would be a great place to live, then when you get back home all you can think about is why did you leave that amazing place. To put it simply you have a real life that brings responsibility's no matter how bad or good your life is there is always something there wanting you, no matter how far this gadget can go it would never replace the feeling of life.
They offer you a virtual world. It is YOUR fault to decide you want to stick with it forever. Year, right. As if you can fill your stomach with virtual food...
Well assuming all your bodily functions are taken care of, you still will probably have to come out of VR to pay the bills. Can't dive into VR when the power's off and you have no money to bring it back on. EDIT: Unless you make money in VR... hmmmm...
Think of it this way. If it's really THAT much better that EVERYONE would not want to come back, then it's just better and maybe it's the next stage of humanity. And if not, there's always people who don't accept technology or people like you too afraid of it to use it sooooo yeah. It's not like everyone will just disappear.
This, the valve thing that is like a full body sensor that you wear, the omni traedmill, and a small variety of objects such as different types of guns with accelerometers would be so awesome.
I'm just having fun picturing mice wearing VR headsets.
How the fuck do you put a rat in virtual reality
a tiny rift?
That's one confused rat xD
***** The People at oculus are stupid because theres no real way of doing that
***** They build a little mini oculus rift and hook it up to a mini computer and put on on the mouse. The mouse is then emerged in mini VR.
MVR!
The real question we should be asking is how real do we want it to get?
I think we should go beyond how real into surreal like the 11th dimension.
I would be fine with having electric jolts hit me in specific areas based on where I am hit or shot at, that would be amazing.
Now that you mention it I think I did. Good Catch.
Dylan Morgan
Yeah, except, you know, turbo tax. Takes a solid 10 minutes to do your state and federal taxes.
Deivmin Deivmin I could stand there and punch you in the face when you miss a parry in the game
Cyro-Nydd Personally I think the go to games going to be used for this rig will be FPS & MMORPG's and Action games.
We're almost there.... A 1080p OculusRift with Kinect/PS4camera technology & properly calibrated games and our brains will be living comfortably in VR.
not good enough! need to ad the omni!
It would be so cool for me lol because I have bad vision in real life, so it would be cool to see the world without glasses... Well, it's not the world, but it would feel like it. Alright I need to stop typing before I give someone a headache.. >_
Baby Donkey Never thought about it that way good point!
yessin ayachi
I seriously wanna lay in the couch not be standing up and running around.
Manuel Cufre lazy man, its way more fun and immersive. Play horror games with this. You will need a shitbucket implemented...
"Guns don't kill people.People kill other people."
Same applies for everything else.
*****
Everything known to mankind will be abused by mankind. Seriously. Dynamite was created for mining, not for killing people. The same with many, no, all other inventions. They were made for something specific, but everything can be used in other ways.
When we would think "But what if someone abuses it?"... we would still be living on trees, growling at each other.
Schilani Exactly.
David Jones well surely there would be less deaths if there weren't guns
Different How about killing people with rods then?
Okay, fine, ban them too.
Oh wait a minute, people can even kill people with their BARE HANDS.
What do you do now?
I have my demo set up on this tomorrow evening! Check out some of the other videos on 'reactions' if you want to see what I have in store... :D
thank you ***** * i was just looking at the Occult and as one who is focal with the brain.. i had this question.. so very very timely.. * .. where do i find your 'reactions.. as i am watchin this in g+ .. on youtube..
Exciting!!!! We better see lots of pictures and maybe even video *****!
Oculus needs to hurry the hell up with that commercial set....
I can't wait anymore :(....
yes they do. sony has their own plans for VR set right now. and if sony will make it sooner, then Oculus will just fail hard
*****
Dont do it. the second you do, the commercial version will be out.
I saw a video where a Japanese scientist made headphones that could affect peoples balance... that would be an awesome addition, if people were in a safe position and couldn't fall
nice! have any links?
I didn't think I could find it, I realize now that they actually say they plan to use it for stuff like this
search : Japanese scientist create mind control earmuffs
or
/watch?v=LUl6xHG8F7M
This was one of the most informative videos I've seen posted by Gamespot. Well done.
Forget virtual reality, lets make it so we don't need epic goggles, instead, hook our minds up to our pc's and let's play mirrors edge!
i do like mirrors edge, but i would rather be in minecraft
Sword Art Online??
TheKiyakou THANK YOU FOR THIS COMMENT!!
Or you could, ya know, go outside and jump over stuff?
Mirror's Edge is a game that literally needs virtual reality to feel what the game makers really wanted you to feel.
so you like vsauce?
It's the gaming vsauce
I was searching for this comment and voila i found it!
keep up the good work cam robinson... you give a serious (really appreciated) approach to gaming/tech and it's a breath of fresh air!
This is an unbelievably intellectual series. I love it. Please, continue.
Imagine if they do this with movies.
Why am I thinking about Nerve Gear from SAO?
Well, on the bright side, this thing can't kill you.
Petman5312 lol yeah, we still have long way to go until that happends xDD
If someone creates SAO in the oculus rift would you play it. I know i would ;D
GodlySpinjitzu would I play it?!? O.O
If it gets relased, I would be first in the line to get it!! :D :D :D
I'd get it! Immediately :O
So many 14 year olds thinking SAO is possible...
Shreks Secret Agent LOL.
No, it's some anime about people trapped in a virtual reality MMO game which isn't possible.
UmbreonTheNerevarine maybe in 10 or 20 years... who knows? well i hope for it because it would be frikin awesome
NeodymSulfat ... It's not possible.
You'd have to paraylze yourself entirely to make it work.
NeodymSulfat lol, not that reason, but to actually get in the game though
UmbreonTheNerevarine well there are a lot problems if you think about doing such things with the current technology
...Sword Art Online. Nuff said.
Or the Virtuix Omni.
***** Hey hey! Be sure to get some footage will ya? I'd love to see how it handles on different games. I'll sub ya and keep an eye out =).
if the nerve gear + the sword art online game..
i'll never see daylight again (and i dont hope from dying in game :3 )
.hack ''The World'' for me!
Yes. Yes. Yes. YES. YES! YES! YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!
think about how amazing virtual reality could be in 10 years
Halfway there?
@@davemustaine4866 lol
Half way there and it’s already amazing the difference between the oculus rift dk and the oculus quest or rift S
Already half way there. We have full-body tracking, eye tracking, finger tracking, devices that allow us to feel heat and cold, devices that allow sense of smell, etc.
How is it now? We're seeing the emergence of the omnipad and haptic suits, so another 5 years and they'll be meant for gaming too
SAO here we come!
Kevin Sixx SAO fan here* (me) :p
Abdul Fatir what the FUCK is SAO? everybody keeps saying it and I'm getting fricken annoyed having no clue what it even stands for!!!
Arshad Tablet sword art online, its an anime
Yup... But we still can't feel in-game like we feel IRL. That's maybe because It's not safe for such device to directly have a link with with Brain just like they mentioned in the series :(
Kevin Sixx SAO FOR EVER
Very immerse video, the constant hand movements and white background swaying is a great technique
You are getting a subscriber from this well done, informational video, sir. It was just what I was looking for
Thanks for the headhache D:
maybe by 2022 there will be some thing like the the nerve gear from sword art online (anime tv show)
I hope they do!
i have a feeling sword art online is nearing us
Impossible unless you like being paraylzed for the rest of your life. This is the closest we're ever getting.
UmbreonTheNerevarine Ahhh, not entirely. In fact, the easiest method to achieve full immersion is to be able to control your dreams. And in a way, you are paralyzed in dreams and you are still okay.
UmbreonTheNerevarine
we can semi read dreams now, so think again
Excellent -- the most important insight is that "the brain seems to readily accept a virtual body as its own," indicating its just a matter of time until the technology to create a robust immersive experience exists.
This is such a good video, I would like to thank you and this will probably be reference in my dissertation. Keep up the good work.
Lol since it would be 100x easier to trick a rat into thinking virtual reality is reality, I bet they would have waay more fun right now in the present than us XD
Maybe not.
I mean, rats do have a better sense of smell then humans.
Kirito Kazuto And your point is?
Factual Basis of Information.
You shouldn't let false information get around the Internet, les it become a hassle in the future, similar to the 30 minute rule.
+░KenLinx░ It wont trick your conscious mind. But humans are more reliant on visual cues than other animals. So it might be more stimulating for us than rats.
Oculus Rift + that walking / running device you had in a previous video? Even if this stuff doesn't take off or speed up fast enough in the gaming community - these tools could be DRASTICALLY important for military testing and training.
fuck military and people who join it....but sadly you are right...it was my first thougt too...-.-
Why military? What about education? Why do we immediately think of defending ourselves or killing other people (murder) when some new tech comes out?
+shoxxer92 Business is War
I'm definitely looking forward to the day where I can play a video game while simultaneously learning and producing educational/engaging/relevant material for others to use and play with.
War is over, if you want it.
When you moved that chair o.O you earned my subscribed button lol
For anyone wondering, the space game they are playing is called Strike Suit Zero. It is an exceptional space combat game.
Curious - what was the background music you used in this? I really enjoyed it and want to look it up :)
Just let me have my Sword Art Online already :(.
2020
chrysmania Well if they can induce a coma maybe they can make it induce temporary paralysis to make it work D: Then again the health nuts out there would go crazy lol
***** Yeah they will basically go crazy on the government and the video game companies lol.
OMG!! They're perfecting the nerve gear!! Once it's perfected we'll be able to go into SAO!!! Of course without that dying part, lol
The matrix is Comming, Loving it! ^^
What do you mean coming? Its here.
XD
Hmmm... Not a bad Idea, Ill try tomorrow and later I can tell you how it wen... wait a minute! XD
Good idea, I Just need to go and buy some at the local vendor shop!
I have a Rift (developer version). It's only a step towards contact lenses that do a better job. Have a look at the TH-cam video called 'Sight' uploaded by cgbros
how did u get a rift?? i jus wonder :)
Oculus Rift + Motion Ride style chair + flight or driving sim seems like a winning combination
I see a lot of potential in virtual reality. Visiting places across the world, going on rides that would be too dangerous to build, going on adventures, practicing skills like surgery or sports. As long as we're careful, we should be fine.
Brace yourselves. SAO in real life is coming.
Breaking news, SAO is a shit show trying to cater to gamers
It would be awesome if someone can create a gaming device like the "NerveGear" in SAO.... maybe the Oculus Rift and Sony's Project Morpheus are a step closer to creating such a fictional device...
Sorry but SAO will take too much money and time
I mean sorry to spoil your fun*
***** you dont really know that... I mean how fast did the technology evolve from a PS2 to a PS4? considering graphics and online gaming.... and how fast did Apple evolve the iPhone 3G to an iPhone 5S? so much improvement in a mere 6 years... Im dont know if a "NerveGear" is even possible, but if you consider how fast the technology is moving forward it might actually happen
You observed Vsauce pretty good. Now get a better camera and lighting, and you're the perfect copy ;)
i just love how Billy Jean is taking on like 3 people in an argument XD. And slapping all of them
That's pretty cool. I didn't know gamespot had this series lol neat.
I feel like if you get maybe somewhere fully immersed in a virtual world that it may effect you, maybe not physically but maybe mentally and that in turn can *maybe* affect you physically.
like assassin's creed?
so you are basically saying: DON'T PLAY CALL OF DUTY WITH THE OCULUS RIFT!
Some brains are easier to fool with virtual reality than others... if you get my meaning.
We could even be in a virtual reality at this moment
Daniel Wolf "and for the consumer version it's basically gone altogether"
Can i borrow the timemachine you used to test the consumer version?
In all seriousness, no one can know how much simulator sickness the Rift will cause.
"so no need to "trick" anything."
First you describe a potential way to trick your body, and then you say that there is no need for it.
Tried it at work 2 weeks ago, and this is awesome¨!! Can't wait for it to come out!
What if we put a moving floor under them? hmmm.. so many questions
stop watching and plagiarizing inception.
Luis Caraza I've never seen it.
No seriously. I've NEVER seen it.
It just came to me.
Anybody told you your lips remind of Stalone's?
And your English was great ^^ It would be an awesome experience^^
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/272991.php
if you could combine some of this new tech into letting you control an avatar in a fully rendered world, then you wouldnt need lucid dreaming.
Fascinating, Thank you so much for this!
Oculus is probably the most dangerous invention ever.
Right.....
Lol seriously. Think about it. People WILL trap people in their basement from birth and strap an oculus on their heads and have them live a virtual reality. It will happen. Guarantee
Jordan W Aaah!! the matrix is coming, the matrix is coming!
jk lol
Nah, that would be the H-bomb.
Or people will neglect their children all the same. There is literally no difference between that and what they do with kids and tv's right now.... except with the rift the kids will have a more interactive childhood opposed to just looking at a rectangular tv. So your point is moot.
Why is the first thing that comes to mind people using this in MMOS and making very personal relationships with people .
I was thinking of how it could be combined with the omni to use it in GTA, that would be pretty awesome!
Rats in VR?! ...Lucky bastards...
THIS IS SO FREAKING INTERESTING!
answer me this what if lets say whenever we come out with full working VR where you cant tell its not real witch i pray they'll have in my lifetime but WHAT IF you get in the vr and dont want to come out ?
LostForever201
You might want to check up with a psychologist.. Even though I might get exactly that feeling, once I get my hands on a Rift.
+Maddie Thats the first intelligent comment I've seen today. Well done.
Whats the song at 5:27?
I've been looking for it, tried to Shazam it, but nothing yet. If anyone knows or has an idea, it'd be great to hear the full track!
Vestibulocochlear stimulation. Yeah, it there's likely to be some implementation of it in the future.
Omni-directional treadmill, full body suits, and a few new innovative techs in "virtual" weaponry is all we need for a full VR MMO.
actually this made me cry joyful for the new device of gaming
I'm watching this video using a dk2 :D
I'm thinking of buying one myself, is it good when using the pc?
you need a good pc to get the best experience. I, along with everyone would recommend not getting the dk2 but waiting for the consumer version.
ThatBulgarian Thanks man, i'll wait for that version instead of buying it now.
Yeah, I'm waiting for the consumer version... It's coming out this summer!!!!
Slickety Slock Like virtual reality? watch Cyberith and Omni.
So am I getting it wrong, or is he?
its a single screen with you eye combining two different perspectives of it from the lenses
But because the perspective changes as you move your head, it gives the feeling that you're actually looking at a 3D world.
alienzen
Oh, right, that's what I meant.
I'm sorry to be stupid but is this thing for sale now? I just walked through frys and Walmart and did not see them.
Virtually reality...I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS DAY ^_^
Rat study is flawed though on account of imagination being an excluded factor in the analysis.
Interesting, I'd agree with you there- I realize it's been a pretty long time since you commented that but how'd the hypnosis thing work out for you?
It's good. Mostly focusing on self-hypnosis right now, though I've been working with language patterns in my sales position.
So its like a 3ds on your face xD
4ds :3
***** There's no such thing as the fifth dimension.
***** 10DS.
0-0
Hmm..nope
Now all we need is a real life Pip-Boy to go along with it x)
My Oculus DK2 is on the way as well as my KOR-FX vest. I'm excited to see what the combination of the two does to immersion in VR. If you haven't heard of the KOR-FX I'd check it out. It's pretty crazy.
Am i the only one who thinks "NEXT UP COMES SAO!"
.3.
This is probably going to kill people too. Think heart attack when the big nasty monster pops out of the closet and grabs you.
That could happen with anything. People with bad hearts shouldn't be playing horror games to begin with.
I agree, I use a sony hmz t2 and an air mouse on my head, the effect is probably as good as the oculus if not better, but whilst playing outlast I almost died !
Oculus Rift + Horror Games = Getting people killed.
Oculus Rift + Virtuix Omni + PrioVR + Araig = FULL IMMERSION
MY BRAIN REALLLY HURTS FROM all the god damned speculation, the lying, the lack of information, the backtracking, and the wishful thinking.
AND THE GOD DAMNED LISPING
What was the song playing in the background?
Goes on response notification hoping for song and all I get is, "ya" XD
na
STAHP PWEASE
ok. (still no song name btw)
dude you're killing me XD
I am definitely skeptical.
trickykid3000 Did some research.
People have been saying shit about tvs back then and everyone can still see just fine.
really cause it seems that everyone i know wears glasses or has had laser eye surgery
Having complete immersion could potential be fatal, it's best to keep it at visual and at most just limb sensory attachments.
Mind telling me how it can be fatal? I'm curious. :3
*****
Really?
HTakara82 That can compare to dying in dreams.
HTakara82 Well, cant you say the same for 3d and 6d movies? Ive been to like a 6d horror rollercoaster thing, and im completely fine.
what i think would be better yet is to have the brain removed...
connected on a life support for it complete with brain computer interface..
and have your brain connected into a cyber form of anything you would like to be
Ya no. We don't even have the tech to remove the brain much less create a virtual reality with just the brain.
DreableNeebal10
technology is very close to being able to take a brain out and keep it alive and healthy..
and not a virtual reality..but an actual reality
Unless you mien remove and not cut it off of the head then your very wrong!
DreableNeebal10
I do realize that they have a lot of planning to go still in order to live in a different form...there are many trans-humanists working on this as we speak..even 2045 is talking about it ... soon the world would no longer have to be limited by what can be real or not .. and as for different creatures..that would be a possibility as well (all that would be needed are people that don't want to be human and to want to be something else) ... then even farther they start using bio engineering to where the real life looking form can go from being cyber to being made of flesh and blood
DreableNeebal10 do not try to act intelligent while having horrible spelling skills
Thanks for the video, I learned a bit. Rad stuff!
This thing seems amazing but im kinda worried that it may ruin my eyes since im so close to the screen or give me a giant brain tumor...
***** hey be careful if u get this because it may give a attack or freak u out because i bought one and my sister freaked out she wont even touch my stuff any more
manjoyt dhaliwal Thanks for the heads up, I doubt I'll be playing any horror games with this until im ready to die lol
Sword Art Online. That's how.
Thanks for the suggestions. :D I'll have to check them out.
Is there a space exploration or a game related to the vastness of space that you can play with oculus rift?
No mans sky maybe?
Thanks, will check that out.
Yeah. Looks cool
Checked it. It's good and also bad at the same time. It's understandable as it's an indie game and also because making a game like this is not hard, it's super hard. But the good side beats it as we can explore a lot of things. Love it. I'll wait for this game, badly.
Haha i cant wait
10 years later: Big buff guy walks up to smaller guy. "Do you even rift?"
