Hi, it will do no harm, anything to help the shaft slide back in without dragging on the driveshaft seal to ensure the seal has the best chance of sealing. I normally spray the seal itself with silicone spray rather than use gearbox oil.
I have quite a few videos already on the 406 mainly on issues i experienced or issues i have had brought round. As i am not daily driving a 406 anymore i have less reason to do videos for it and generally there are not too many more 406 topics i can cover. However if you have 406 related questions i can try and help or at least assist you in finding help.
Yes, same place. BTW it's worth mention that it's way easier to fill up these gearboxes from the top. Just pull out the breathing cap and voila the perfect filling spot. Filling from the side is more challenging, depending on the tools and material at hand. From the top a rather common funnel, is all that's needed! ;-)
Sorry i cant remember, 32, 34, 35 and 36 i know are the larger sockets ive bought over the years for PSA cars. Just cant remember what this car had. If in doubt stick a vernier calliper on the nut and measure it before ordering a socket.
@@bxyw I haven't worked it out yet, but it doesn't do it all the time I heard cv will do it all the time turning. Leaning towards inner steering rob maybe
@@GeraldBirkett yeah I haven’t had a good look at mine but it seems to only make a noise when changing directions (forwards to reverse) and maybe on full lock steer
@@mevlandedja2457 Is it definitely leaking from the driveshaft seal, what brand of seals are being used, is the driveshaft machined surface damaged and letting it leak out? Who is changing the seal?
The track rod end? Its a replaceable part, im not going to replace a full steering arm when only the track rod end needed changed. The lower ball joint at the bottom of the hub was not changed in this video
Nice to see someone on here who knows how to use tools rather than just hitting everything with a hammer. Thanks
Haha thanks for that, the hammer does have an important role in stress relief but the proper tools definitely avoid times when that is needed.
Exceptional video!
Very clear step by step instructions and added advice.
Thanks for the comment.
Great work mate, very well played out thanks heaps
thanks for sharing this usefull video!
Are you supposed to put some Gearbox oil on the drive shaft when inserting it back in?

Good job

Thank u a lot
I have one and have some problems i'll ask u about it later thank u again
you forgot to say click when torqing down the bolts without using an torque wrench
is there a risk that the oil will leak when changing struts, wishbone and so on?
If the driveshaft slips out of the gearbox yes gearbox oil can leak out, it does not harm to have a bottle of oil spare just incase any is lost
hi my friend, very good explanatory video, just wondered is the gearbox oil filler located in the same place on a 308 SW 1.6 hdi, regards billy

Is there a inner seal as well or just the outer one you installed? Nice video
There is also an inner seal, a similar replacement process
Notice the number plate is an illegal font and may fail an MOT
Quite a few cars like this in Northern Ireland, although this is not my car just one i am sorting out for someone.

My car still leaks there after changing the oil seal on the side of the driver.I have a peugeot 407 .What the hell is going on?
Perhaps the seal or driveshaft has not been installed correctly. It is very easy to damage these seals or have them misaligned which can cause a leak.
@@peugeotCitroen2CV thank you but i have changed this 3 times in a good auto servise😕

What socket size do you use?
Sorry i did not put it in the video, it was either a 36 or 40mm.
Just buy the shaft complete. Costs about £60 - not worth the hassle at price. 👍
The OEM CV shaft was still in perfectly usable condition, im not a fan of throwing stuff away just for the sake of it.
@@peugeotCitroen2CV fair play PC - you are a better mechanic than me. 👍
I replaced the ripped boot on my 306 drive shaft well over 150,000 miles ago. The original drive shaft is still good at 280,000 miles.
Why would you change the ball joint only, change the whole thing man, it will cost 30 extra
