Spinerella and Netossa aren't just girlfriends, they are married. Netossa calls Spinerella "my wife" openly and no one in the show makes a big deal out of it, and even before then Bow's parents aren't just parents but also husbands and they must have been married for a long time if their youngest son is a young adult
She-ra acknowledges same sex marriage in a very normal, just a regular part of life and something people need to realize, is that not _everywhere_ that these shows air *have* same sex marriage as something we can aspire to unless we run off somewhere else
Experiences are not universal, so it is important for possibilities to be presented to us

Yes. I watched She-ra a little before president of my country, running for re-election pushed for amendment for Constitution to make sure, that gay people could never get married and be parents (for now we don't have any legislation for it and against it, so we cannot have it, but with that it could be even harder to get to equality).
I listened to Warriors by AJ Michalka as I went to protest yesterday. So... yeah, I absolutely adored this show, I couldn't shut up about it when I watched it, the same way I cannot stop talking about situation in Poland...

I personally don’t like Riverdale at all. The main reason being Jughead and Betty. I’m not saying Bughead is awful. Just that when they started dating I was wary and disappointed, but when they started sleeping together I was devastated. When Haruka is first introduced the inner senshi believe she's a boy and all crush hard they then find out she's a girl and they all are still crushing hard (if not harder). With Michiru i could see an argument that Usagi just admires her but 🤷‍♀️. In the 5th season/arc Seiya is introduced. In the comic Seiya is afab and presents as a man in the Anime he is male as a civilian and female as sailor star fighter. Tuxedo mask is absent from most that arc and Usagi is clearly attracted to Seiya and they have a lot of sexual tension through out the season/arc.

For example, having a bisexual character cheat or have commitment issues is a harmful stereotypes and is pretty common in media already. I wouldn’t have a problem with such portrayals except there are so few bisexual characters that don’t follow harmful stereotypes.

Hi! You might not want to watch it because it is in Spanish and you'd have to read subtitles, but there's this thing called Skam, a web series originally from Norway that has a lot of remakes, and there is a Spanish version. In the Spanish version (Skam España) there are two bi girls that fall in love with each other (mild spoiler) and it is actually really good. You can find it on TH-cam and I'm pretty sure there are English subtitles available. Also, you'd have to watch season 2. Season 1 is not available on TH-cam, but it is more boring. You would miss out on couple of details about other side characters, but that's not really important. I know it is not much, but i loved it (I might be biased because it is a Spanish show and I am Spanish, but still). I think it does a great job at representing bisexuality and coming out to your friends and deals with mental illnesses too... Idk i loved it, you should give it a try :))

Such an important observation! RuPaul has always angled his show for mass consumption, it is more of a window into the community (in an unflattering way) than it is actually about representation of drag culture. That is, at least in part, why the transphobia seeped in...
Also, cishets sometimes ruin things by simply having an opinion about it. That is what I think is also happening with Drag race...

Purple Waves From a writing perspective, Korrasami actually makes sense, Asami was the only one who comforted Korra after her battle with Zaheer leaving her broken, she even offered to go with her to the Southern Water Tribe while she healed; and Asami was the only person who Korra wrote to during her final year of recovery, in this time they both realised their feelings for one another, Korra knew when Asami talked to her at the end of book 3, and Asami almost confessed to Korra in a letter(this was confirmed in the comic). We do see some signs in books three and four, Korra and Asami spend quite a lot of time together in book three and we see Korra blush at Asami in book four. It was rushed yes, but it wasn’t out of nowhere; it was rushed because Nickelodeon wouldn’t allow the creators to establish the relationship earlier in the show, and they were forced to do a non explicit lgbt ending.

Representation through side characters just doesn't give the audience the same thing as a main character or mc couple being gay, though. Shows are usually giving you the message that the side character is expendable and replacable through their use of them, and they don't get fleshed out as well. That makes investing in them, or inventing ships more difficult for the viewer.

One of my favourite portrayals of queerness is the entirety of the show Black Sails, which no one gives a fuck about anymore except me and maybe three lesbians on tumblr. The way in which it was messy, gut-wrenching, complicated, emotional and so rich but also explicit, central, so well written and not limited to one singular character (literally WHO is straight in Black Sails tho) rocked the boat for straight people (pun intended). The show ran from 2014 to 2017 and it was in the vein of shows like vikings and game of thrones, or at least that's how it baited people into watching, thinking it was another period show about macho men killing and politics or smth. It's by no means perfect but to me it means that we can have queerness at the core of any show and have it be just "like a straight show" in the sense of plotlines and aesthetics except it's not, and it's lgbt elements are intrinsecal to it. Another show that has groundbreaking rep and i don't see it being talked about nearly as much as it should is Everythings's gonna be alright. The show is a drama/comedy created by Josh Thomas, who is gay himself and it's about him and his two half sisters dealing with some heavy family stuff (minor spoiler warning i guess), it not only features at it's centre, a mlm interracial couple that's not only hilarious but also very real-like feeling, but also a wlw couple between two autistic women, played by ACTUAL women in the spectrum (who are also, sensitivity readers for the show!). I cannot recommend it enough for so many reasons other than this, it's fantastic.
We are allowed to demand more without down playing what we already get from the media we watch, and what we get should be allowed to be complex and rich and silly and interesting.

my favorite animated LGBT rep is Tuca in Tuca & Bertie. as a bi woman, i feel like so many people (both inside the bi community and outside) are so fearful or having bi characters that are really sexually active, have casual sex with people, cycle through many relationships etc. while i know this is for a valid reason, i’ve always been kinda sad that we weren’t getting the same representation that straight women have access to. when i saw Tuca being so wild and free and making mistakes while still being true to her messy, sexual self, i felt so heard. can’t wait for S2.

  • @ScarlettDaleWoodall
    @ScarlettDaleWoodall 4 ปีที่แล้ว +97

This problem has a simple solution from my perspective as an artist. The issue is writers trying to please everyone until no one is happy. I write for me. My story is written how I want. Simple as that. My characters are lesbians if I say they are. They're bi when I say they are,gay when I say they are. This also applies to my straight characters. If I say they hetero, they hetero. You have to be arrogant enough to feel that you know the truth of your own characters. They speak to me. They tell me what their racial and sexual identity is. If you don't have a precise vision of your characters,if your not hearing them like their nigh external, alive on their own, then it's not good yet. People in real life don't please our praxis. You meet a cute girl that you adore and she's straight as a ruler. Market symmetry isn't writing because life doesn't ever work that way. Characters should never be exactly what an audience would want.

This is why I appreciate Dana Terrace and her views when asked about Owl House. “I’m a bisexual woman and want to write a bi character that’s like me.” Writing a character that resonates for you because you want you. I am overjoyed that we are getting to a place in media where a creator is able to do that and have it go forward, without pressure in any direction.

I do have to admit that in some cases it gets complicated. Animation/TV series is not only collaborative because it requires a lot of writers giving their opinions to the creator/show-runner, but it also depends on if the studio will give you money to continue on.

I think the end of Bojack had decent representation in Todd and his partner Maude, who is voiced by Echo Gilette an asexual person (who is also on TH-cam!!). While the characters are definitely put up for laughs, their sexuality isn't. There is also a lot of exploring Todd with his ace-ness as he comes to understanding his community and relationship with the community. It surprising how much they actually explored asexuality through Todd's character, that it wasn't only seeing an ace character learn about themselves, but was also teaching non-ace people about the experiences of many ace people when it comes to learning about themselves.
I'm not a cis white man but his experience was super relatable to me, a non-binary white person (I can't speak for non-white experience ofc). It also gave me hope that we may see more explicit representation of asexual people (that isn't super medicalized and viewed as a problem).

I got into it mid-season 1 and it was in response to many people I knew going nuts because Stiles was, in their opinion, one of the best examples they'd ever seen of real, not Hollywood, ADHD. I think it points to how that aspect of his character got dropped as time went on that people who started watching later never mention it. Which sucks, because I will never forget that excitement of seeing myself reflected, and the fact that later viewers never seemed to experience that? Is actually sad to me. (The fact that neurodiverse rep is, like, 90% white boys is an issue, though).

I'm just some straight white dude, but I feel like I genuinely care about representation, not just with the LGBTQ community but as well as how women are depicted in media. For me, I like when a character can be gay without it defining their ENTIRE character arc. But I also understand there are stories that need to be told where that has to be the main focus, so there's a couple examples of each:
The Wire - Kima Greggs. What an absolute badass character in general, but the thing I really love about her is how her storyline plays out. At the beginning of the series there were a couple comments about her being gay by the knucklehead male cops. But I absolutely love how her relationship with her girlfriend was depicted. She wants Kima to stop being a cop and raise a family, while Kima is drawn to her job and isn't prepared to be a mother yet, but doesn't really convey this properly. It's like normal relationship drama, but played out between two women. Nothing about that stuff had to do with the fact she was gay, and I feel like that's actually proper representation... your sexuality shouldn't make up 99% of your character's motives in EVERYTHING.
Shameless - Ian. I fell off watching this show cause I started to finding every character's decision making to be infuriating...but the first couple seasons I really enjoyed Ian's storyline. Both the way he was portrayed, and Mickey's closeted homosexuality had a sense of realism to it. This is when using a character's sexuality as their main storyline is done properly.
The Deuce - Multiple characters. HBO's show about New York, and the sex industry in the 80s really hit the AIDs crisis over the head, and I enjoyed some of the aspects of that stuff, but a few more specific things really got to me. Firstly there's a closeted politician who goes to underground sex clubs to have sex with men, and when someone mentions the word gay to him he basically freaks out and says "I have sex with who I want, no need for labels". I actually thought this small scene was kind of powerful. Why does having sex with other men automatically make you GAY? I was kind of like "score one for the BI's!!" lol. There was also this cute relationship between a prostitute and her caring gay neighbour. I have a joke where I say "well I'm probably 90% straight...the other 10% just REALLY loves DIana Ross". There's a scene where the gay neighbour (who works in costumes for film) pulls out an original Diana Ross dress like it's a rare artifact. It kind of confirmed my joke is based in some truth lmao. The characer, Reg, is depicted so humanely I just really liked him a lot. On top of all of that, the show manages to treat sex workers with some humanity as well.
Black Sails - Name retracted for spoilers. Someone in the comments already mentioned this show. I remember pretty much cheering when the huge "twist" was revealed for one main character. I don't wanna say too much because it is very spoiler-y. But this is another example of how one's sexuality can be the driving force for their storyline and it doesn't feel shoe-horned in. Of course this show has gratuitous lesbian sex scenes too, but you cant win em all I guess?
Master of None - Denise. I just love Lena's character in this show. She's like "one of the boys" but through the lens of a gay woman. I saw that character wasn't supposed to be black or gay, but they re-wrote it for her personality, and I feel it really shines though. I think I like this character because she's gay, but she's also the same as everyone else. We aren't so different after all! Haha, but really conveying a gay character like this is important to people who aren't gay. They can see them more as just a person rather than specifically a gay person. Shows like Will & Grace were important for representation, but I feel it made gays more of a stereotype. This kind of character just feels like a real person, and someone you'd like having in your group of friends.

I think that there's one more thing to bring up in this conversation, and that is that even with the progress that's been made we can never take that for granted. Push for more, absolutely, but also be on guard for hard regression -- for those who are the anchor trying to drag society to a dark grave will also try to drag us backward in the process. A lot of crazy and fairly unexpected things have happened in the last few years, so I think being wary is warranted.
After all, a lot of the progress in stories only occurred because it _finally_ became profitable to appeal to other groups besides just hetero/cis normative folks. And even still... they hedge their bets a lot of the time.

    • @Mxmiaozers
      @Mxmiaozers 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Yeah. I know people are very excited about the progress, and I am too. Progress does not mean stability, though. Progress isn't an indelible checkmark that can't be erased. Magnus Hirschfeld was doing amazing work in Germany for decades, helping gender nonconforming people to get the IDs they needed to be safe on the street and developing the first hormone therapies for trans people, as well as all of his other research for lgbtq folks. Then 1933 came around. Hitler was elected. Hirschfelds institute and many of its documents were destroyed. We know what else happened. Now there are people claiming that transness is a new fad, in part because this progress and documentation was erased. I don't assume any of this is guaranteed to stay. I want people to enjoy and support progress, but I hope at least some of us can remain vigilant as well.

there's a Japanese movie called His (romanized) that's REALLY great. it's about this man whose ex-bf shows up several years after their break up with a kid from a marriage he forced himself into to feel straight, and the movie is just a really amazing character study of these two men's complicated relationship with each other and everyone around them. it's not hyper sexualized in the way that a lot of mlm Japanese content tends to be (if you know, you know). the characters are messy and conflicted about their sexualities, but they're always treated sympathetically by the narrative without it making excuses for any toxic behavior. I really can't recommend this movie enough. it's been so long since I felt such an intense, personal connection with fictional characters' struggles, and it's an absolute CRIME that it's so hard to find (as of right now the full movie is uploaded on youtube, I legit don't know where else to find it, but if you do, please let me know so that I can support this movie financially!)

Great video. Especially liked the part about “messy, problematic representation.” There's this weird three-way false association a lot of people make between good representation, representation of flawless people, and representation they subjectively like. None of those three things are the same as any other.

Tooru Mutsuki in Tokyo Ghoul:Re is a gay trans man basically canonically. A lot of people argue over whether scenes depicting him describing his gay attraction to the lead as womanly or describing being clocked while stealth as "they knew I was a girl" as disproving it, but he lives his entire life as a man and these things happen in the midst of struggling with huge amounts of trauma.
Not for everyone of course, you could say it's all trauma porn but there's this scene where his friends stop him from committing suicide which is just... It's so powerful. To me he's neurodivergent gay trans male rep.
Note that he's one of two characters in the show who are tortured and the show is full of horror and gore. Also the fan base is very toxic.

As a fellow ace, it might be just you? I see where you’re coming from, though. In real life, I don’t really pick up on the subtle art of sending “signals” to one’s preferred gender.
I personally struggle with it because I haven’t seen it. If I don’t see it, I don’t identify with it, and therefore can’t fully connect with the characters that uphold the heteronormative standards Hollywood beats into us every day.
“House” had an infamous episode where he basically proved asexuality to be a myth (the wife was lying and the husband had a brain tumor preventing him from being sexually attracted to women). “Brave” was counterproductive because by the end, they still encouraged her to “fall in love” and choose a suitor.
I haven’t really seen any representation that just lets ace characters be alone, which is what a lot of us prefer. Series finales like to end with everyone getting a partner. That’s a whole other can of worms, though...
Except for Todd in “Bojack Horseman.” His choices were treated with respect and he wasn’t infantilized for being inexperienced in adult fun times, and they didn’t give him an endgame partner.
TL;DR: Hollywood as a whole just doesn’t give a shit.
Please tell me if you’ve seen more shows or movies with good ace representation. I neeeeeeeeed iiiiiiiiiit!

@@MaidOfPasta Hey, fellow lesbian ace here. I struggle with the same thing. It took me way longer than it should have to even figure out that I´m ace, because I had no idea it was a possibility. I haven´t seen much representation in the media either. Other than "Bojack Horseman" I only know of "Shadow Hunter" (the tv-show) that has an ace character, who is simultaneously a good and a bad representation. There are also the Hunters of Artemis from the Percy Jackson series. In the books they are basically portrayed as an imortal all girl gang who have sworn of relationships.

"humanizing lgbtq lives" and lives... can be messy. I love unproblematic relationships in media, they give me life, like garnet or a good friendship like Blanca and Pray Tell. But I still can appreciate the problematic ones like Elektra or Catradora, because it's human to have problems that can spiral, and it gives me hope they actually trying to be better as a person (I mean Catra, I don't know about Elektra)

  • @PrettyGuardian

I was watching Critical Role recently and I realized that I loved the gay representation in it. Two of the characters are lesbians, one of them is bisexual, and these labels are never brought up nor are their preferences ever "othered" within the world. However, I also realized that they all struggle to have meaningful relationships but the framework of the struggle is actually a deeply HUMAN struggle. It asks those questions like "Am I ready to give of myself what this person deserves?" and "Do I deserve to be happy?" which is so rarely a conflict presented in media where cis/straight people write LGBT characters. It's kind of like how interviewers will focus on trans bodies and not trans stories. Sometimes it's important to jump beyond that veneer and ask the bigger questions, and tell the deeper stories.

I'm only 10 minutes into the video but I just wanna mention that as someone who only watched a couple episodes of teen wolf but was deeply involved in the fandom for a couple years, I literally had no idea Scott was Mexican. I don't think I heard it mentioned once and I combed through that AO3 tag countless times. I'm just kind of shocked that this video is the first time I've heard that fact brought up at all, and I feel like it proves your point that the fandom failed to really even acknowledge that part of his character.

I just wanted to jump in on the Tara/Willow thing, that's literally written as an allegory for having an addiction, the spell is supposed to be willow effectively gaslighting tara, and once tara finds out (in the following episode that's also possibly the best of the whole show) willow and tara do not get back together whatsoever until like, moments before tara dies. Just factually the order of events you described isn't how that happens.
