It all depends which base you're at, as some are larger with more commodities and some are smaller, older and have less to offer. Typically, every base has intramural sports year-round, and I know some people start their own little groups who get together to play whatever sport. The DFAC is 100% dependent on where you are, some are super great with amazing food and some are very dated, contracted out to companies who don't serve the best food. Either way, there will always be a DFAC on base for Airmen who live in the dorms to eat for "free" at. I'm pretty certain every base has a gym, the one on my base is pretty nice. Some bases have a movie theater, library, bowling alley, arts&craft center, playground(s), outdoor basketball court, daycare, outdoor recreation facility (where they rent out equipment to include camping gear, sports vehicles, etc.), and an assortment of stores and food places. It's all truly dependent on where you are! My base doesn't have a ton, as it's so small and dated, but when I went to Travis AFB in California for my eye surgery, it was HUGE. Typically you can look up the base and their website has the information there.

I find your videos incredibly helpful. I am signing up for the Air Force but is very scared of Basic training I am scared of the physical training. I currently can even do push ups and feel if I go I will be there for six months or more because of how out of shape I am.
I would definitely recommend pushing yourself and making sure you're more comfortable with the physical training before going in! That way you're not stressed about being there for 6 months (which wouldn't happen), just keep working on it!
deja herron How have things worked out for you since you did your comment five months ago? Remember, Air Force Basic Training is "BMT" for "Basic Military Training" whereas Army Basic Training is "BCT" for "Basic *COMBAT Training" which tells you right there that Air Force is nowhere near as bad as Army/Marines are. Plus it's the *shortest* basic training. You should not have a lot to be scared of. Just take several times a day to do some pushups and situps here and there to get your body used to it, and then just jog in place to practice your running.

Thank you for all you do and say in your videos. Have you ever thought about "Recruiting"? LOL I went into the Air Force at 18 yo, knowing that I wanted to stay until retirement. I loved getting up every morning putting on my uniform and having duty. I miss being on active duty so much. The friendships you make are like a bold a brother/sisterhood between each other. As you already know. Some of us even vacationed together. The first couple of years I was in my late wife and I would have the single guys over to our house . My wife would fix dinner and then we'd play card games . Let me back up to where I said we'd invite the guys over, we had no females in our section . I was in Base Supply at that time. I was later cross trained into Early Warning Radar and then into flying the last 10 years of my career. I'm sorry I made this about me again. Thank you for your service I mean that. We hear that all the time in stores , Thank you for Service. It sometimes uts meant like , I have to say this. I enjoy your videos. I'll continue to watch them . .

Hey! So, it's totally up to you whether or not you want to go to college first or not. You definitely don't need any prior experience if you want to do photojournalism. There are options outside the military for photojournalism, you can definitely get a job if you get out and want to continue doing it. I chose photojournalism because it was the most artistic thing in the Air Force haha. There are definitely differences I think between military and civilian photojournalists, but I'm not sure what exactly because I haven't explored outside options. To practice writing...I'm not sure...maybe find prompts to write about, get some books that help the structure of essays or stories, things like that.
I'm in the same boat as you. I am thinking about taking the military route because it's easier on my husband and I financially and I can get training done faster than going to college for photojournalism. I've looked into photojournalism as a civilian but (in my experience) a lot of them want you to have experience and a degree and I feel like the military would make both of those things easier and better in the long run. I know you were asking other followers but those are my thoughts about it. I tend to ramble so I'm sorry if it doesn't make sense
Stephanie Mena between sit-ups and push-ups you get about 2-5 minutes, and then about 5-10 minutes before the run. They’re pretty nice usually when it comes to that, if you need more time they’ll most likely give it to you.
Can you do a video on piercings and tattoos regulations and such during the enlisting process and while being enlisted. I am thinking about joining but i have a very intimate tattoo (it’s a small lotus flower) but I am nervous about it
I could do a video, but it's pretty straight-forward! Tattoos are allowed on pretty much your entire body now, minus the hands, face, head, neck and mouth. If your tattoo is on one of these areas, you may be able to receive a waiver from your recruiter before enlisting. The Air Force is just concerned with professionalism and uniformity, so as long as your tattoo is small and in good taste it will most likely be fine.

I know some people who have been in the career field of photojournalism for four years and never deployed, and some who have deployed once or twice, so it really just depends on when you go in and whether or not you get the luck of the draw. It usually takes about three years to rank up to E-4, although some do it in 2.5 if they receive "Below the Zone," which allows them to rank up a half year earlier

I first was interested in joining in high school, and I filled out one of those cards to give to a recruiter when they visited my class once. But no one ended up contacting me until after I graduated and went to a year in college, which by that time I hadn't thought about it for a while. But because I felt like I wasn't going anywhere, I thought it was perfect timing and a great opportunity to really make something of myself. I watched as many videos as I could, did a lot of research, and asked my recruiter a lot of questions, which helped me know what to expect for BMT but I didn't do a lot of research about what happens when you're in the operational Air Force. So that has been a bit of a shock for me, but there's a lot more content out there I feel like now. Just make sure you think everything through!

Yes, there will be time available for you to read the Bible in free time around lights out, and also you are allowed to go to church services on Sundays!
alyssa It should help in a way. You’ll be used to it, so it won’t really have as much of an impact on you. It’s like working out, if you’re physically in shape you should be fine working out. If someone isn’t used to getting yelled at or told what to do, the yelling would really scare them because it’s new to them.
I think it depends on the person. I personally didn't get yelled at, at home, but being yelled at during BMT wasn't that hard for me because I know it's just what they do as an intimidation tactic. I went in prepared for the worst, and when it wasn't that bad, I was just cruisin.

How easy or hard is it to switch jobs in the Air Force later down the road? I'm looking to join the Air Force Reserves and Material Management sounds like a cool job but I'm getting my degree in Physical Therapy and would like to roll over to Active Duty as a Physical Therapist eventually.
Soooo I don't know a lot about cross-training, I know you have to wait until just about the end of your contract, because they try to keep you in longer. It's not necessarily hard, it's just a matter of whether or not your office can afford to lose you, and the career you want to switch to can afford to take you. There's a whole different process to switch from Reserves to Active Duty though, I don't know what that is.
Once you chose Photo Journalism how long did you have to wait to go to basic training. I’m in DEP right now waiting for a Cyber Surety position to open.
Liz everyone gets new glasses at BMT! You take the ones you already have, and wear those for a few weeks until everyone gets matching pairs haha. Once you get to your tech school you can buy more attractive frames (as long as they’re in regulations). The Air Force has nicer frame options you can get after BMT, which you can get for free, but if you want brand name frames you’ll have to pay for those.
Elora Jean What if you don’t have glasses before BMT and when you go through the medical optometry processing they say you need glasses, will they give you a pair?
This all depends on which base you are stationed at, if you are married, etc. Generally speaking, it takes about three years. There are some people who are able to move out sooner if their dorms become too full and need to empty out in order to make room for newer people. There are a lot of factors that go into play so there is no set answer, but generally three(ish) years.
Teyonna Green Elora Jean said three years generally which is arguably better than the Army. In the Army if you're not married, you'll have to stay in the barracks (which are generally considered worse than Air Force dorms) until you reach the rank of *E6* which is going to take a lot longer than three years, which means that those of us in the Army who aren't married will have to deal with the inspections, rules and other crap for a whole lot longer than those who were smart enough to join the Air Force.
I thought it was super fun, and not that hard. I'm not sure how up to date the video you watched is, but the one I did just felt like a big kid playground. My heart was pounding, I was so excited. The hardest part of the obstacle course was probably having to do a low-crawl through this really long sand pit, where they want you to keep your head on the ground, which means there was just sand all in my ear, face, mouth, etc. By the end though I wanted to do it again haha
You sign a job contract before going to BMT, or sign a "general" contract before going to BMT. You have the choice between signing for a job and going in as general, and I recommend signing for a job beforehand. If you go in general, you find out your job during BMT and it might not be something you want!
I can get paid, there is a form I filled out to request approval for earning income outside of the Air Force. I'm not sure how sponsorships would work for me specifically...because although I'm not an AF representative I still have a lot of content about the AF and don't want to make it look like the Air Force supports random businesses lol. I'd have to ask how that works.
I've read that tachychardia (like heart palpitations) is a disqualifying factor...like 100% you'll never join ever even with surgery done. Do you (or anyone else reading this) happen to know if this is true?

It's not a matter of competition, but availability. It's a pretty small career field, so it might take a while for a contract to come by, but if you're able to snag the job, you got it.
Hollie Woods I’m sure they have test and if you pass the test and meet all of the requirements you should be good to go. But, communication is key. Especially when flying.
I wanted to just confirm on what you said about how you can go to a recruiter and say you want a certain job and not sign anything yet. I’m about to be a senior in high school and if I go to a recruiter soon and say I want to join and be an Air Traffic Controller, by the time I graduate high school will that job probably be available for me? And I’ll be able to sign the contract if I get the spot for that job?
You can definitely go in there and say that's what you want to do, but there's no guarantee the job will be available by any specific time. If you get a high enough score on your ASVAB, and it's available to you at the right time, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to sign the contract. Jobs come out on a month-to-month basis, it's sort of like a sports draft- recruiters attend this meeting where they take the names and jobs of recruits they have, and try to match up and trade around to fit what they need. It might take a few months!
If you have a job in special operations or something like that, they do let you swim. One of my friends went in as some sort of special ops, and on the weekends instead of just kinda chillin, he and whoever else was in a similar career as him went swimming. If you don't have a job like that though, you won't.
When you went in BMT, did you ever have doubts? I’ve been in AFJROTC for about 4 years ago and I’m a senior in high school and have been really thinking about it and I just feel a little nervous for BMT and that’s mostly it. If I can talk to me more about it and give me your honest thoughts about BMT and all that you DM me on insta (Shelby.x.skaggs) . I just want to know the straight forward- ness about everything and not just listening to a recruiter because they can make it look all butterflies and rainbows.
During BMT I was confident I would finish, it wasn't too hard to make me think I would fail. I have had doubts since being in the Air Force, and have had some low points, but ultimately I'm happy I made the decision because it's set me up for success at such a young age. I have education covered, insurance covered, and I even get help if I want to purchase a house. There are A LOT of pros that are worth it for 4-6 years of commitment.
Just a quick question. If I had asthma in my childhood years but grew out of it. Would that disqualify me when I bring it up at MEPS? I’m 20 now but haven’t had asthma since I was 11
It's not a disqualifying factor on its own, they will test you to make sure your lungs don't spasm or something like that haha, I don't know the exact info but if you haven't had it since 11 years old you should be okay
Hey! I have 1 serious question about the pay. Is it worth joining the USAF for 6years starting at E3 then to join for 4 years at E1 or no insignia or whaterever thats called lol??
I personally always will recommend 4 years just because if you end up not loving it, you can get out sooner than later. You catch up eventually, and can save a lot of money while you're in if you do it right.
Just remember why you are doing it! It's all about a positive mindset and determination. I recommend being in shape, and mentally preparing for the stress you will be under.
I am thinking on enlisting in the Air Force myself but I was told to lose weight and then take the ASVAB test. Do you have any pointers on how to get the weight off. Do you know if the Air Force is also part time or not.

Can you have a car in the Air Force and if so what would happen if you had to move stations? And do you have a car? When would you suggest getting a car?
You can have a car, when you move stations you can either drive it to the new one or have it shipped. I don't have any suggestions for when to get a car because I feel like that's all personal preference
I don't remember them being that hard because a lot of the test is based on information you would learn in high school, for the most part. Pretty basic stuff, minus the mechanical areas, those I had no clue about and guessed entirely on
My husband just left for basic, is tech school different for every job? I have heard that some people get time off after graduation and that some people go straight to tech school, is that true?
Tech school is different for every job, all across the U.S. and for varying lengths of time. If your husband is active duty, he will go straight to tech school after BMT. If he is guard or reserve, he might go home first before heading back to tech school. I'm not too sure how that works though. You will most likely be able to visit him in tech school though :)
Potentially, I saw an Air Force instruction recently that said candidates with a history of asthma could receive a waiver if they pass this test where they test your lungs for spasms or something of that nature. If you do some digging you can probably find the specific rules!
Blow dryers in BMT are not allowed, you won't have time to do anything with your hair other than brush it and/or put it in a bun. You can probably bring one to keep in your civilian clothes bag though, so you have it to bring with you to your tech school. Otherwise your family will have to ship it to you wherever you go after BMT
I am a nursing student and I am interested in joining the Air Force to continue my career. Yesterday, I got a call from a army recruiter and I mentioned to him that I am interested in the Air Force. He told me that he did not understand why I would join the Air Force because “the Army has the biggest medical branch”. Is this true or is he just using his recruiter techniques to persuade me to not join the Air Force? He honestly made me feel really bummed because I would like to be a Air Force nurse, but he made me feel like it was not likely :/
Jennifer Valdez each branch is of course going to try to get people to join their particular branch. To my knowledge, the largest medical branch is actually from the Marines. That being said, the difference is that in Air Force may send you to BMT without knowing what your career will be (although it will be out of the 10 jobs you listed when in recruitment) and the Army sends you to BMT already knowing what your job will be. Your ability to get a specific job is entirely up to how you score on tests and job/career availability.
Oooh man that's a tough one. I don't know a lot about the Army, or its nursing program, but I would say go with your gut. It seems to me the people on my base who are nurses or medical technicians are happy, although I have never asked. I met a girl in the Army last week who said she's switching to Air Force because the Army just doesn't care for its people as much. The way she explained it is The Army has a better sense of pride and family, whereas the Air Force is more like a corporation, but that the AF still took care of its people better than the Army.
Hello, I’m a military spouse and a civilian Federal employee. My co-workers are mostly military spouses and/or veterans. Most of them said, if you want faster promotion, go to the Army. If you want a career, go to the AF. When I go on TDY and meet veterans, they say almost the same thing. But what I can tell you is, since you are in the medical field, either branch will be happy to have you. The branches need medical people. 😊
@@egrikku8602 Marines do not have any medical personnel. It's all under the navy. The "field medics" on the ground with Marines is called a corpsman, but is still a navy seaman.
Keira Ayala Air Force deployments last at most 6 months whereas the Army lasts at least 9 months. Army may also deploy more frequently. Then there is the fact that Army soldiers mayhave to do more physical labor than Air Force members. And Army soldiers also have to wear that heavy body armor (which the Air Force doesn't issue) a lot...while doing physical labor...in some of the world's hottest weather. I'm in the Army but haven't deployed yet but knowing what I know now, I would have joined the Air Force instead of the Army
i have a question about switching branches. A lot of the times, there is a hell of a lot of pride within the branches that if your recruiter catches wind that you may be considering a different branch, they freak out and claim you will not be allowed back into the branch you were originally considering, etc. I'm assuming it is definitely against the rules to just bar someone like that for arbitrary reasons. As well, how do you deal with the pressure a recruiter is putting on you to take a job? Sometimes a job that you were hoping for disappears off the list and recruiters will make you choose your #2 and threaten you saying that if you do not go, you will be discharged (in this case I'm referring to the air force, from past experience). Again, is this allowed? Or just a tactic from recruiters to get you off to bmt. Sorry for the long comment!
You can definitely switch into another branch if you enlisted in a different one, I know a few people who came to the Air Force after being the Navy or Army, etc. Same goes the other way, I know people who went from Air Force to another branch. There's a process, but it's allowed. As for the pressure from recruiters...just keep reminding yourself that they can't do anything if you don't want to sign a contract. I know you can only be in the DEP for so long, so you might not want to wait forever, but I want to say you at least have a year. It's important to realize you are the one controlling your fate up until you sign your job contract.
Elora Jean That makes sense. It’s just unfortunate that, young people especially, are roped into jobs they don’t want to take. Leaves them feeling a lot more powerless than they actually are. The strong arming in recruiting needs to be taken down a step or two
Yep! There were a few girls who did in my flight. Like Melanie said though, you just have to make sure you can still be ready on time. You'll have to find a way to neatly fold it too, so it can be kept in your drawer.
The minimum for the Air Force is 70 lbs if I'm not mistaken. When I went through MEPS and was tested on that though the sergeant testing me totally helped me lol
catherine Streator I'm in the Army, you'll have to do a deadlift at the recruiter's office, but it won't be anywhere near 200 pounds. There are lots of people in the Army that can't deadlift anywhere close to 200 pounds. Just because "Army Strong" was a slogan doesn't mean it should be taken literally That said, arguably theres still so much better that the Air FOrce has over the Army and the fact that the Air Force only makes you do PT (I think they call it "PC" for "physical conditioning") like twice a week (as opposed to everyday like the Army) and actually lets you do PT the rest of the time on your own might help you get stronger than you could in the Army. You would get more opportunity to go to the gym and do your own workouts in the Air Force than in the Army, so you might be able to get stronger in the "chair force" Yes, we can go to the gym in the Army too, but only when we're off duty and we can't work out as much as we'd like knowing that we still have to report for PT the next morning when we're sore, and we still have to do the exercises we're told to do like going on a long run.
mac burger I only thought that you had to be able to lift that much because a recruiter for the army came to my school and talked about the benefits of the Army and said that you had to be able to deadlift 200lbs, but I could of heard it wrong maybe he was talking about how much he could deadlift or something else, but thanks for the reassurance!

I think it all depends on your job, but I personally work a very typical job where I'm in and out of work at the same time every day (pretty much), Monday-Friday. That means I have the evenings and weekends off most of the time.
@@EloraJean You folks in the "chair force" probably do have more time than we in the Army do. One thing, you only have to do mandatory morning unit PT like, what, twice a week (and the other days you can work out on your own)? So that's more time you have than we in the Army have since we have to report early morning everyday and spend an hour and a half to two hours of PT. Then, from time to time we have to be out in the field for at least two weeks (which sucks for so many reasons like the fact that we have to go weeks without bathing ourselves) *whereas you folks in the "chair force" either don't go out to the field at all* , or if you do it's for far less time and you go far less often and you have far better conditions like showers.
I currently live in a house. Once you arrive at your first base after tech school, if you're unmarried, you will live in a dorm room. I'm not sure how every dorm is set up, but you should at least have your own room. You might share a common space like a kitchen, bathroom or living room.
@@ravanjanae Yes. If you are married, you get extra pay and can live with your spouse off base. You might from time to time have someone check up on you, but it won't be as frequent or as ridiculous as barracks inspections (or "dorm" for Air Force) are for the unfortunate souls who aren't married and have to stay on base in barracks.

QnA: how is life on base? for example, intramural sports, Dfac food, recreational facilities etc. Thanks!
It all depends which base you're at, as some are larger with more commodities and some are smaller, older and have less to offer. Typically, every base has intramural sports year-round, and I know some people start their own little groups who get together to play whatever sport. The DFAC is 100% dependent on where you are, some are super great with amazing food and some are very dated, contracted out to companies who don't serve the best food. Either way, there will always be a DFAC on base for Airmen who live in the dorms to eat for "free" at. I'm pretty certain every base has a gym, the one on my base is pretty nice. Some bases have a movie theater, library, bowling alley, arts&craft center, playground(s), outdoor basketball court, daycare, outdoor recreation facility (where they rent out equipment to include camping gear, sports vehicles, etc.), and an assortment of stores and food places. It's all truly dependent on where you are! My base doesn't have a ton, as it's so small and dated, but when I went to Travis AFB in California for my eye surgery, it was HUGE. Typically you can look up the base and their website has the information there.

I find your videos incredibly helpful. I am signing up for the Air Force but is very scared of Basic training I am scared of the physical training. I currently can even do push ups and feel if I go I will be there for six months or more because of how out of shape I am.
I would definitely recommend pushing yourself and making sure you're more comfortable with the physical training before going in! That way you're not stressed about being there for 6 months (which wouldn't happen), just keep working on it!
deja herron How have things worked out for you since you did your comment five months ago? Remember, Air Force Basic Training is "BMT" for "Basic Military Training" whereas Army Basic Training is "BCT" for "Basic *COMBAT Training" which tells you right there that Air Force is nowhere near as bad as Army/Marines are. Plus it's the *shortest* basic training. You should not have a lot to be scared of. Just take several times a day to do some pushups and situps here and there to get your body used to it, and then just jog in place to practice your running.

Thank you for all you do and say in your videos. Have you ever thought about "Recruiting"? LOL I went into the Air Force at 18 yo, knowing that I wanted to stay until retirement. I loved getting up every morning putting on my uniform and having duty. I miss being on active duty so much. The friendships you make are like a bold a brother/sisterhood between each other. As you already know. Some of us even vacationed together. The first couple of years I was in my late wife and I would have the single guys over to our house . My wife would fix dinner and then we'd play card games . Let me back up to where I said we'd invite the guys over, we had no females in our section . I was in Base Supply at that time. I was later cross trained into Early Warning Radar and then into flying the last 10 years of my career. I'm sorry I made this about me again. Thank you for your service I mean that. We hear that all the time in stores , Thank you for Service. It sometimes uts meant like , I have to say this. I enjoy your videos. I'll continue to watch them . .

Hey! So, it's totally up to you whether or not you want to go to college first or not. You definitely don't need any prior experience if you want to do photojournalism. There are options outside the military for photojournalism, you can definitely get a job if you get out and want to continue doing it. I chose photojournalism because it was the most artistic thing in the Air Force haha. There are definitely differences I think between military and civilian photojournalists, but I'm not sure what exactly because I haven't explored outside options. To practice writing...I'm not sure...maybe find prompts to write about, get some books that help the structure of essays or stories, things like that.
I'm in the same boat as you. I am thinking about taking the military route because it's easier on my husband and I financially and I can get training done faster than going to college for photojournalism. I've looked into photojournalism as a civilian but (in my experience) a lot of them want you to have experience and a degree and I feel like the military would make both of those things easier and better in the long run. I know you were asking other followers but those are my thoughts about it. I tend to ramble so I'm sorry if it doesn't make sense
I love these videos! How long is the break between pushups, situps & the run during BMT?
Stephanie Mena between sit-ups and push-ups you get about 2-5 minutes, and then about 5-10 minutes before the run. They’re pretty nice usually when it comes to that, if you need more time they’ll most likely give it to you.
Can you do a video on piercings and tattoos regulations and such during the enlisting process and while being enlisted. I am thinking about joining but i have a very intimate tattoo (it’s a small lotus flower) but I am nervous about it
I could do a video, but it's pretty straight-forward! Tattoos are allowed on pretty much your entire body now, minus the hands, face, head, neck and mouth. If your tattoo is on one of these areas, you may be able to receive a waiver from your recruiter before enlisting. The Air Force is just concerned with professionalism and uniformity, so as long as your tattoo is small and in good taste it will most likely be fine.

I know some people who have been in the career field of photojournalism for four years and never deployed, and some who have deployed once or twice, so it really just depends on when you go in and whether or not you get the luck of the draw. It usually takes about three years to rank up to E-4, although some do it in 2.5 if they receive "Below the Zone," which allows them to rank up a half year earlier

I first was interested in joining in high school, and I filled out one of those cards to give to a recruiter when they visited my class once. But no one ended up contacting me until after I graduated and went to a year in college, which by that time I hadn't thought about it for a while. But because I felt like I wasn't going anywhere, I thought it was perfect timing and a great opportunity to really make something of myself. I watched as many videos as I could, did a lot of research, and asked my recruiter a lot of questions, which helped me know what to expect for BMT but I didn't do a lot of research about what happens when you're in the operational Air Force. So that has been a bit of a shock for me, but there's a lot more content out there I feel like now. Just make sure you think everything through!

Yes, there will be time available for you to read the Bible in free time around lights out, and also you are allowed to go to church services on Sundays!

alyssa It should help in a way. You’ll be used to it, so it won’t really have as much of an impact on you. It’s like working out, if you’re physically in shape you should be fine working out.
If someone isn’t used to getting yelled at or told what to do, the yelling would really scare them because it’s new to them.
I think it depends on the person. I personally didn't get yelled at, at home, but being yelled at during BMT wasn't that hard for me because I know it's just what they do as an intimidation tactic. I went in prepared for the worst, and when it wasn't that bad, I was just cruisin.

How easy or hard is it to switch jobs in the Air Force later down the road? I'm looking to join the Air Force Reserves and Material Management sounds like a cool job but I'm getting my degree in Physical Therapy and would like to roll over to Active Duty as a Physical Therapist eventually.
Soooo I don't know a lot about cross-training, I know you have to wait until just about the end of your contract, because they try to keep you in longer. It's not necessarily hard, it's just a matter of whether or not your office can afford to lose you, and the career you want to switch to can afford to take you. There's a whole different process to switch from Reserves to Active Duty though, I don't know what that is.

If you wear glasses, do they give you new ones at bmt or do you wear the ones you already have?
Liz everyone gets new glasses at BMT! You take the ones you already have, and wear those for a few weeks until everyone gets matching pairs haha. Once you get to your tech school you can buy more attractive frames (as long as they’re in regulations). The Air Force has nicer frame options you can get after BMT, which you can get for free, but if you want brand name frames you’ll have to pay for those.
Did you need to bring your eye glass prescription as well or is just bringing your glasses okay?

how long do you have to stay in the barracks after bmt and ait before you could live in a house of your own?
This all depends on which base you are stationed at, if you are married, etc. Generally speaking, it takes about three years. There are some people who are able to move out sooner if their dorms become too full and need to empty out in order to make room for newer people. There are a lot of factors that go into play so there is no set answer, but generally three(ish) years.
Teyonna Green Elora Jean said three years generally which is arguably better than the Army. In the Army if you're not married, you'll have to stay in the barracks (which are generally considered worse than Air Force dorms) until you reach the rank of *E6* which is going to take a lot longer than three years, which means that those of us in the Army who aren't married will have to deal with the inspections, rules and other crap for a whole lot longer than those who were smart enough to join the Air Force.

How did you feel about the obstacle course? I watched a video and it looks intimidating 😅
I thought it was super fun, and not that hard. I'm not sure how up to date the video you watched is, but the one I did just felt like a big kid playground. My heart was pounding, I was so excited. The hardest part of the obstacle course was probably having to do a low-crawl through this really long sand pit, where they want you to keep your head on the ground, which means there was just sand all in my ear, face, mouth, etc. By the end though I wanted to do it again haha

You sign a job contract before going to BMT, or sign a "general" contract before going to BMT. You have the choice between signing for a job and going in as general, and I recommend signing for a job beforehand. If you go in general, you find out your job during BMT and it might not be something you want!
Can you still get payed by TH-cam when in the Air Force? Or from anywhere else such as sponsors?
I can get paid, there is a form I filled out to request approval for earning income outside of the Air Force. I'm not sure how sponsorships would work for me specifically...because although I'm not an AF representative I still have a lot of content about the AF and don't want to make it look like the Air Force supports random businesses lol. I'd have to ask how that works.
I've read that tachychardia (like heart palpitations) is a disqualifying factor...like 100% you'll never join ever even with surgery done. Do you (or anyone else reading this) happen to know if this is true?

It's not a matter of competition, but availability. It's a pretty small career field, so it might take a while for a contract to come by, but if you're able to snag the job, you got it.

Hollie Woods I believe you can, there’s just certain AFSCs (jobs) you won’t be eligible to do.

Hollie Woods I’m sure they have test and if you pass the test and meet all of the requirements you should be good to go. But, communication is key. Especially when flying.
I wanted to just confirm on what you said about how you can go to a recruiter and say you want a certain job and not sign anything yet. I’m about to be a senior in high school and if I go to a recruiter soon and say I want to join and be an Air Traffic Controller, by the time I graduate high school will that job probably be available for me? And I’ll be able to sign the contract if I get the spot for that job?
You can definitely go in there and say that's what you want to do, but there's no guarantee the job will be available by any specific time. If you get a high enough score on your ASVAB, and it's available to you at the right time, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to sign the contract. Jobs come out on a month-to-month basis, it's sort of like a sports draft- recruiters attend this meeting where they take the names and jobs of recruits they have, and try to match up and trade around to fit what they need. It might take a few months!

If you have a job in special operations or something like that, they do let you swim. One of my friends went in as some sort of special ops, and on the weekends instead of just kinda chillin, he and whoever else was in a similar career as him went swimming. If you don't have a job like that though, you won't.

Can you still get college tuition benefits in reserve ?
When you went in BMT, did you ever have doubts? I’ve been in AFJROTC for about 4 years ago and I’m a senior in high school and have been really thinking about it and I just feel a little nervous for BMT and that’s mostly it. If I can talk to me more about it and give me your honest thoughts about BMT and all that you DM me on insta (Shelby.x.skaggs) . I just want to know the straight forward- ness about everything and not just listening to a recruiter because they can make it look all butterflies and rainbows.
During BMT I was confident I would finish, it wasn't too hard to make me think I would fail. I have had doubts since being in the Air Force, and have had some low points, but ultimately I'm happy I made the decision because it's set me up for success at such a young age. I have education covered, insurance covered, and I even get help if I want to purchase a house. There are A LOT of pros that are worth it for 4-6 years of commitment.
Just a quick question. If I had asthma in my childhood years but grew out of it. Would that disqualify me when I bring it up at MEPS? I’m 20 now but haven’t had asthma since I was 11
It's not a disqualifying factor on its own, they will test you to make sure your lungs don't spasm or something like that haha, I don't know the exact info but if you haven't had it since 11 years old you should be okay

Hey! I have 1 serious question about the pay. Is it worth joining the USAF for 6years starting at E3 then to join for 4 years at E1 or no insignia or whaterever thats called lol??
I personally always will recommend 4 years just because if you end up not loving it, you can get out sooner than later. You catch up eventually, and can save a lot of money while you're in if you do it right.
So I leave November 1. What's the best advice you can give me? Since I leave in 2 months and a half or so
Just remember why you are doing it! It's all about a positive mindset and determination. I recommend being in shape, and mentally preparing for the stress you will be under.

I took about a year's worth of college before enlisting, but did not go to any sort of ROTC program or Air Force academy.
I am thinking on enlisting in the Air Force myself but I was told to lose weight and then take the ASVAB test. Do you have any pointers on how to get the weight off. Do you know if the Air Force is also part time or not.
I will be uploading a video soon about how to get in shape or lose weight before BMT, so keep an eye out for that, and you can join the Air Force as active duty (full time) or reserves/guard (part-time). I am full-time.

You can have a car, when you move stations you can either drive it to the new one or have it shipped. I don't have any suggestions for when to get a car because I feel like that's all personal preference

I don't remember them being that hard because a lot of the test is based on information you would learn in high school, for the most part. Pretty basic stuff, minus the mechanical areas, those I had no clue about and guessed entirely on

My husband just left for basic, is tech school different for every job? I have heard that some people get time off after graduation and that some people go straight to tech school, is that true?
Tech school is different for every job, all across the U.S. and for varying lengths of time. If your husband is active duty, he will go straight to tech school after BMT. If he is guard or reserve, he might go home first before heading back to tech school. I'm not too sure how that works though. You will most likely be able to visit him in tech school though :)
Can you enlist in the military if you have asthma?
Potentially, I saw an Air Force instruction recently that said candidates with a history of asthma could receive a waiver if they pass this test where they test your lungs for spasms or something of that nature. If you do some digging you can probably find the specific rules!
I have asthma, and I tried to enlist. I was told by every recruiter I spoke to that I wasn’t allowed to enlist because I’m on medication for it.

Are blow dryers available or allowed to be brought?
Blow dryers in BMT are not allowed, you won't have time to do anything with your hair other than brush it and/or put it in a bun. You can probably bring one to keep in your civilian clothes bag though, so you have it to bring with you to your tech school. Otherwise your family will have to ship it to you wherever you go after BMT
I am a nursing student and I am interested in joining the Air Force to continue my career. Yesterday, I got a call from a army recruiter and I mentioned to him that I am interested in the Air Force. He told me that he did not understand why I would join the Air Force because “the Army has the biggest medical branch”. Is this true or is he just using his recruiter techniques to persuade me to not join the Air Force? He honestly made me feel really bummed because I would like to be a Air Force nurse, but he made me feel like it was not likely :/
Jennifer Valdez each branch is of course going to try to get people to join their particular branch. To my knowledge, the largest medical branch is actually from the Marines. That being said, the difference is that in Air Force may send you to BMT without knowing what your career will be (although it will be out of the 10 jobs you listed when in recruitment) and the Army sends you to BMT already knowing what your job will be. Your ability to get a specific job is entirely up to how you score on tests and job/career availability.
Oooh man that's a tough one. I don't know a lot about the Army, or its nursing program, but I would say go with your gut. It seems to me the people on my base who are nurses or medical technicians are happy, although I have never asked. I met a girl in the Army last week who said she's switching to Air Force because the Army just doesn't care for its people as much. The way she explained it is The Army has a better sense of pride and family, whereas the Air Force is more like a corporation, but that the AF still took care of its people better than the Army.
Hello, I’m a military spouse and a civilian Federal employee. My co-workers are mostly military spouses and/or veterans. Most of them said, if you want faster promotion, go to the Army. If you want a career, go to the AF. When I go on TDY and meet veterans, they say almost the same thing. But what I can tell you is, since you are in the medical field, either branch will be happy to have you. The branches need medical people. 😊

Marines do not have any medical personnel. It's all under the navy. The "field medics" on the ground with Marines is called a corpsman, but is still a navy seaman.

I have not deployed! One of my coworkers just recently did, he was gone for 6 months.
Keira Ayala Air Force deployments last at most 6 months whereas the Army lasts at least 9 months. Army may also deploy more frequently. Then there is the fact that Army soldiers mayhave to do more physical labor than Air Force members. And Army soldiers also have to wear that heavy body armor (which the Air Force doesn't issue) a lot...while doing physical labor...in some of the world's hottest weather. I'm in the Army but haven't deployed yet but knowing what I know now, I would have joined the Air Force instead of the Army
i have a question about switching branches. A lot of the times, there is a hell of a lot of pride within the branches that if your recruiter catches wind that you may be considering a different branch, they freak out and claim you will not be allowed back into the branch you were originally considering, etc. I'm assuming it is definitely against the rules to just bar someone like that for arbitrary reasons.
As well, how do you deal with the pressure a recruiter is putting on you to take a job? Sometimes a job that you were hoping for disappears off the list and recruiters will make you choose your #2 and threaten you saying that if you do not go, you will be discharged (in this case I'm referring to the air force, from past experience). Again, is this allowed? Or just a tactic from recruiters to get you off to bmt.

You can definitely switch into another branch if you enlisted in a different one, I know a few people who came to the Air Force after being the Navy or Army, etc. Same goes the other way, I know people who went from Air Force to another branch. There's a process, but it's allowed. As for the pressure from recruiters...just keep reminding yourself that they can't do anything if you don't want to sign a contract. I know you can only be in the DEP for so long, so you might not want to wait forever, but I want to say you at least have a year. It's important to realize you are the one controlling your fate up until you sign your job contract.
Elora Jean That makes sense. It’s just unfortunate that, young people especially, are roped into jobs they don’t want to take. Leaves them feeling a lot more powerless than they actually are. The strong arming in recruiting needs to be taken down a step or two

Yep! There were a few girls who did in my flight. Like Melanie said though, you just have to make sure you can still be ready on time. You'll have to find a way to neatly fold it too, so it can be kept in your drawer.
How much can you lift? I know in the Army you have to be able to deadlift 200 lbs. what’s the minimum for the Air Force?
The minimum for the Air Force is 70 lbs if I'm not mistaken. When I went through MEPS and was tested on that though the sergeant testing me totally helped me lol
catherine Streator I'm in the Army, you'll have to do a deadlift at the recruiter's office, but it won't be anywhere near 200 pounds. There are lots of people in the Army that can't deadlift anywhere close to 200 pounds. Just because "Army Strong" was a slogan doesn't mean it should be taken literally
That said, arguably theres still so much better that the Air FOrce has over the Army and the fact that the Air Force only makes you do PT (I think they call it "PC" for "physical conditioning") like twice a week (as opposed to everyday like the Army) and actually lets you do PT the rest of the time on your own might help you get stronger than you could in the Army.
You would get more opportunity to go to the gym and do your own workouts in the Air Force than in the Army, so you might be able to get stronger in the "chair force" Yes, we can go to the gym in the Army too, but only when we're off duty and we can't work out as much as we'd like knowing that we still have to report for PT the next morning when we're sore, and we still have to do the exercises we're told to do like going on a long run.
mac burger I only thought that you had to be able to lift that much because a recruiter for the army came to my school and talked about the benefits of the Army and said that you had to be able to deadlift 200lbs, but I could of heard it wrong maybe he was talking about how much he could deadlift or something else, but thanks for the reassurance!
@@catherinestreator3332 If you join the Army,instead of Air Force which I would advise against for *MANY REASONS* you would have to do a deadlift on our harder PT test debuting next year, though again that shouldnt be close to 200 pounds

How much free time do you have as an Airmen???
I think it all depends on your job, but I personally work a very typical job where I'm in and out of work at the same time every day (pretty much), Monday-Friday. That means I have the evenings and weekends off most of the time.
@@EloraJean You folks in the "chair force" probably do have more time than we in the Army do. One thing, you only have to do mandatory morning unit PT like, what, twice a week (and the other days you can work out on your own)? So that's more time you have than we in the Army have since we have to report early morning everyday and spend an hour and a half to two hours of PT. Then, from time to time we have to be out in the field for at least two weeks (which sucks for so many reasons like the fact that we have to go weeks without bathing ourselves) *whereas you folks in the "chair force" either don't go out to the field at all* , or if you do it's for far less time and you go far less often and you have far better conditions like showers.

I currently live in a house. Once you arrive at your first base after tech school, if you're unmarried, you will live in a dorm room. I'm not sure how every dorm is set up, but you should at least have your own room. You might share a common space like a kitchen, bathroom or living room.
If I am married and in the Air Force but my husband not would he still be able to live on base with me?
@@ravanjanae Yes. If you are married, you get extra pay and can live with your spouse off base. You might from time to time have someone check up on you, but it won't be as frequent or as ridiculous as barracks inspections (or "dorm" for Air Force) are for the unfortunate souls who aren't married and have to stay on base in barracks.
