Fixed my Golf alternator thanks to this!
I wasn’t confident that it would work, but I bought a voltage regulator anyway just to see.
Getting the cover off in situ was a bit fiddly, due to the Philips screw right behind the oil filter, but was able to get it loose with a screwdriver bit in a very small ratchet spanner.
The garage quoted me €570 to fit a new alternator, I fixed it for €30.

Just a comment to say this is a brilliant piece of advice to change only the regulator/rectifier part. I was getting worried as all web info was that to change the alternator complete on my 2005 VW Passat TDI involves removing the whole of the front of the car. This video & advice has saved me loads of money & time. Thankyou.

That's a great video. I often wonder why the voltage reg is now routinely sold as a unit with a rebuilt alternator. It creates a market for a quick buck, where a retailer can buy a voltage reg for $22 and sell back the 'rebuilt' alternator to the next customer for $180. A generation ago these were two separate units, and so you tested and only replaced the bad part. The difficult part for the customer is to wait (with no car) while he finds the voltage reg and gets it mailed to him....

    Hello mate,
    Thanks for a nice words.
In these types you cant change brushes for 2 reasons,
First is that where brushes are fused it's completely sealed with hard epoxy,it's very hard to get this stuff out.
If you manage to get to the fuse points there is a disappointment there too, brushes are fused to the aluminium and as you know you cant solder copper to aluminium.
Its much easier to just get a new regulator.
    Hope this helps.

I just would like to say thanks for the illustration, but, IF you try to do it on the car it can be hard, I have a 1,6 TDI with AC, so... had to loosen the compressor and the big hose in front of the alternator to get to the screws and nuts, the nut on the right side is so thin that I had to grind down the spanner to make it fit, so it is a bigger job than I expected, thankful anyway about the TH-cam videos! A big help! Took me two days...🤨

Hello mate,i think due to a long time in stand still brushes might have got a bit corroded.
And a bit of oxidization could have come to the slip rings.
Loosen the engine belt, take the regulator of the alternator,it should be a bosh and its only 2 philips screws holding it.
"flick" the brushes to free them, and spin the alternator by the pulley holding a bit of a sand paper to the slip rings, that should clean them, reinstall and try it then.
I might make a video on the old type bosh shortly :D :D.

    Hi,
I have just had this problem on my 2002 T4 2.5tdi multivan with a Bosch alternator.
The only thing I will say is DO NOT BUY AFTER MARKET volt regulators, pay £40 exchange and get one from VW, the quality even in the appearance says it all, compared with the after market stuff.
I was supplied with 2 off ebay, (TOPRAN) One was charging at well over 20volts which would have boiled the battery.
It also cut out the entire dashboard, so buyer beware
The 2nd one I was supplied with, the battery light still glowed dimly.
After fitting a genuine part all systems go, so don't scrimp to save a few lousy quid.
Thanks for the video, very helpful.

Hello mate, great you liked the video,
First question, does the battery light comes on when ignition switch is on,and does it go off when engine starts?
If it does, check the charge on the alternator terminal rather than on the battery,if you will get correct reading ie: over 14V,it means you have no contact from the alternator to the battery. But if the voltage is low you might have a worn pulley on the alternator.
Let me know how did you got on mate.

Hello there,In some cars its easy to change regulator while the alternator is on the engine. Easiest way to see if it is possible is to simply open the bonnet and have a look where the alternator is situated. If there is an easy access to the back of the alternator you will more likely manage to change it.

Bolt i ame talking about is the power wire comming from the battery, but if you disconnect the battery itself you dont have to worry about it.
But you can have a problem with the rectifier, often enough when changing the battery people fit the battery leads other way around.
Even if you do it for a split second it can damage the rectifier, and it will cse the red light to come up on the dash.
    Hope this helps.

  • @WestronicsIrl
    @WestronicsIrl  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Mate,
I think the alternator you have there is more likely to be internal type bosh,
which i dont have any videos of them.
Or it could also be a valeo, which you can find a video of on my chanel.
And in valeos most of the time its only brushes that give trouble.
Oh,and yes i think you do need a new battery :D.
    Cheers.

I have a problem with my VW golf IV 1.4 16V with Bosch alternator. When the weather is a bit cold, I can see my main lights flashing a bit, not continously. This only happen when engine is idling (850 rpm), when I increase revolutions to 1200 rpm they lightning normally.
Yesterday I measure some voltages....when engine is off I get 12.96V, when iddling the voltage is changing between 14.13-14.28V, increasing the rpm it stay at 14.28V.
    What could be wrong?

    Gents,
Great video! I'm about to attempt my first alternator replacement on my Audi B5 2.8. Is it likely that it is the regulator like in this video?
A week ago as I was driving all my dash lights, radio, etc stopped and the car would only rough idle. When I jumped it, it started right up, but when I disconnected one of the jumper cables the car died immediately. To me this means the alternator is bad. I borrowed a battery charger, but the battery won't take a charge. I guess I need a new one

    Hello mate,
If the light is flashing on the dash it means you need to have a look in the alternator, its more then likely stuck brushes,is the battery you used new or is it the one that have been in it for last 3 years?
If it is the old one you need to replace it,charging it is no good.
    1) replace the battery, car should run longer than 5 min. with charged batt.
    2) check the brushes, flashing light often means that brushes are stuck.

Well i think its a stuck brush problem (from being left up for a long time),brushes are situated in the regulator so replacing the regulator should solve it.

my alternator on 01 jetta gl 2.0 aeg motor is charging at 13.8v engine running, no accessories. I applied more engine throttle and voltage remained at 13.8v. When accessories and car idling, voltage drops to 12.6v. Will a new regulator improve this? I am guessing the charging system should be 14.2-14.7 volts.

ALTERNATOR is the weakest and most expensive car generator, made only to oppose the high mechanical resistance it takes from the engine, which translates into fuel consumption. The stator winding is made in such a way as to output three-phase current on which a Expensive and bad diode bridge rectifies it by making it direct current. The efficiency of this shift is of maximum 53%. It consumes a lot, it produces little and it has many expensive components that go quickly to make the drivers for sale. This mess was made especially in the purpose of consuming more gasoline and to sell components that you do not find in the old dynamos. On this site you will find videos showing the old dynamos, used now in some countries, which had a dual role: starter and after it started the engine became a generator. The mechanical force it consumes from the engine was small, it was robust, without straightening axles and it burned hard. dynamo if instead of the aluminum housing in which the bendix is located, a bearing cap is mounted in which to enter the rotor shaft. The stator coil must be decoupled from coal and coupled separately to become excitation coils controlled with the load relay. the rotor, the starter spins. If the sprocket of the bendix is fixed on the shaft not to slip, then it will always remain on the crown of the flywheel, and after the engine has started the sprocket takes over the movement of the motor and reverses the rotor that will produce current by charging the battery. some old model cars, this was done with a transmission belt that came on the flywheel and on the starter - generator. With a single good, robust, reliable and high efficiency device, two maneuvers were performed. Now there are two components that do the same. maneuvers but with higher costs. Question: why? I wrote above. You can find other hidden motivations. Success.
