    The superimposed demon faces were the biggest transgression of the directors cut, because they fundamentally changed the audience's point of view. In the original cut, you're not privy to anything the characters aren't; you're going through the experience WITH them. That's a deliberate, important creative decision. Now, when you see Pazuzu over Ellen Burstyn's shoulder and she doesn't, you're on the side of the "puppeteers", to use a timely comparison. You're now (as a viewer) more omniscient, instead of sympathetic. Criminal.

    • @christopherroussel8998
      @christopherroussel8998 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree... and I don't because by the time they put those new scenes back in 2000, I assume pretty much everybody knew that the movie was about a girl being possessed by a demon so we were already more omniscient, in a way. Still, I liked your thoughts on the surimposed demon faces.

      It's called Dramatic Irony, when you the audience know something the protagonist doesn't-- and frankly I don't think the face detracts (or adds) from it whatsoever because you already know the stakes with or without it.

  • @PlacingRed
    @PlacingRed หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    For me it's not the face that is the scary part. It's the lights going out with her being alone in that big home and her daughter is upstairs "Or is she?!!" possessed by a demon

      This was added in the Directors Cut, it’s not in the Theatrical Cut.
      It’s silly because it’s highly predictable and easily noticeable. The tension is evaporated because we already know that something is really wrong before the payoff reveal that Burke Dennings is dead.
      The version you’ve never seen is still a fantastic masterpiece, but honestly the Theatrical Version is much creepier because it suggests rather than flat-out shows. The demons face becomes a matter of triviality, where as in the original, it’s sparing use makes you jump. The added effects are too obvious. As I say the Directors Cut is still fantastic, but the pacing is dryer and they meddled with the horror too much.
