One of my favourite pop culture references of this installment is from "Third Rock from the Sun", where William Shatner mentions having to be sedated after seeing something on the wing. John Lithgow replies with "Same thing happened to me!", since he'd played Shatner's very role in the 1983 movie adaptation.

The best moment coming from this episode is in an episode of Third Rock from the Sun, where Shatner, guest starring as the Big Giant Head, tells Lithgow's character that his flight into their town was horrible - there was something on the wing and no one believed him! - to which Lithgow cries out: "the same thing happened to me!"

There is an old philosophical question: “If a tree falls in the forest and no one else is around does it make a sound!?” Likewise: “If there’s a man on the wing of the plane only you can see but no one else can: does it actually exist!?”
I was kinda worried this episode would be called overrated: but thankfully not! The premise, the acting, the direction and even the absurdity of the look of the gremlin are all worth the high praise and pop culture status this episode earned!

I still say the greatest moment to come from this episode was a joke on Third Rock from the Sun.
In season 1, they made a joke about an alien disguised as a human played by John Lithgow seeing something on the wing of a plane, not realizing it was just the engine. A few years later, they have Shatner playing the aliens' superior. When they pick him up at the airport (he'd landed in the wrong state) we get this gem.
Lithgow: "How was your flight, sir?"
Shatner: "Fine. Until I looked out the window and tried to tell them there was something on the wing of the plane."
Lithgow: "The same thing happened to me!!"

I think what makes this episode so great (and what makes some of the best episodes of TZ so great) is that Shatner's trip into the Twilight Zone was for a reason. He's just gotten out of a mental institution, and once again, he finds his sanity being tested. And by defeating the gremlin, he fully wins his sanity back. Compare those final shots of him on the gurney vs. when he was getting on the plane at the beginning. Even when he was first getting on the plane, he seemed jumpy and nervous. But by the end, he's completely calm and speaks with full conviction of what he saw. Others may not believe him, but he knows what he saw, and that's all that matters (to him, anyway).

I've been on a Simpsons kick and given that it's spooky season I'm of course rewatching old treehouses of horror. "Terror at 5 1/2 Feet" is an incredible example of how much the creators of that show loved this one. I think the quintessential Zone episode for me is still Time Enough At Last, because it was my first exposure to the series, but after learning much more about it through the Twilight-tober Zone, I can see why you've picked these 4. This is THE TZ episode, it was also the very first one I saw, thanks to all the parodies I had seen before, and I was hooked with the show as a whole, having these small windows to the unreal pop up on day-to-day life, it's simply magic that captures the imagination like no other, it's something I love very much and has even inspired me to write some TZ episodes in my head. (not very good ones though).
What I love the most is that twist at the end, that the Gremlin, or at least the damage to the wing was real, one can only question what would've happened if it hadn't been shot, Robert is one of those unsung heroes, that even when their deeds go unnoticed, he and the audience knows what he has done, and are at least a bit happy with the outcome.
I often reference this very episode to my friends, and they are clueless to what I'm talking about, many of them aren't aquainted with the TZ and it saddens me, I'm not that much older than them, but I do admit this show is way before my era, still, I love it dearly and have recommended some episodes to my friends, specially this one.

I love how in 3rd rock from the sun William Shatner and John Lithgow make a reference to their respective roles:
Shatner; ”I looked out the window and there was a monkey on the wing!”
    Lithgow; “Me Too!”
Love this episode! Does anyone else think the theme is about conspiracy theories?

Sad that I didn't have a favorite episode of Season 4. Closest for me is The New Exhibit. But now we get to my favorite episode of Season 5! Waiting all month for this one! Also excited for more next year!

Definitely this one is my favorite of the final season. I also do like “Night Call” which has one of the most simply tragic endings; a slightly more uplifting ending than Matheson’s OG end but still sad

My favorite reference to this is in s4ep23 of '3rd Rock from the Sun' starring John Lithgow.
Shatner appears as the human form of the alien supreme leader 'the Big Giant Head'. He steps of a plane and when meeting Lithgows character (Dick) Shatner says he "saw something on the wing". Lithgow then answers with "the same thing happened to me".
(Which characterwise is still correct since when Dick got on a Earth-plane the first time he freaked after he looked out the window and thought he saw something on the wing)

Wow, this is my all time favorite Twilight Zone episode. It scared the bejesus out of me as a kid especially the part where he whips the curtain open to see if it's still there and the darn thing has it's face right up against the window. The dark night with heavy rain added to the intense feeling of this episode. I think William Shatner made the episode.

    Where do I begin?
Despite the rushed production, this really was a standout, if not THE STANDOUT of the whole show's run.
While we ALL love to make fun a William Shatner's performance, he does a great job here. I believe what he was going through to be a truly terrifying experience. It really puts you on edge and never lets go.

There's a great callback joke in "Third Rock From the Sun," where Shatner guest appears in an episode. He says he had a terrible flight, because he looked out the window and saw something on the wing. John Lithgow yells back, "The same thing happened to me!"
