Fun fact. In the original MV of Thrill, Miku the rhythm guitarist and band founder could not play guitar, she was pretending, very badly I might add, to play guitar. Things have changed a lot, as she is now an excellent rhythm guitarist and can also hold her own as an acoustic player as you can see from the acoustic performance of Sayonakidori. Also they have plenty of 'in your face songs' too.

/This/ Thrill MV shows a lot of Miku playing guitar which I'm guessing was intentional. Usually she doesn't get much guitar footage even though her rhythm parts are often quite interesting (thank you Band-Maid Prime and "white room" DVD vids"

Welcome!! I would recommend more Band-Maid - "Domination" is a great go-to song for early reactions, one of their best live performances. "No God" is my personal favourite song (their live video has a moment where they're having so much fun they almost start giggling while singing!). A really cool one musically for me is "Cross" - listen out for the key changes, there are so many! All of these three have official live performances which are definitely the best versions to listen to in my opinion.

As others have said, this is a very early song from them, well before they became the best rock band in the world today. And though it's live it was during lockdown in Japan and no crowds were allowed so they had to do these online shows. If you'd like to see what they're capable of now, in front of a real audience, check out their song "Hate?" live from Lollapalooza last month. Band-Maid thrives in front of a big festival crowd.

They're "smooth" because 1...they're incredibly talented musicians, and 2....they have toured worldwide a lot!!! Like other Japanese all-girl rock/metal/punk bands (Lovebites, Nemophila, Gacharic Spin/Otoboke beaver), they are organic and not record company/studio produced bands. If you want to check out their musical dexterity listen to their instrumental "From Now On,"...for a big stadium performance "Puzzle" or for pure raw live brilliance "Hate" recorded at Chicago Lollapalooza just last month! Enjoyed your reaction and comments. 👍

Maidiacs Incoming! 🎉Welcome to the family
I’m an old blues rock guy and I had given up on anything new catching my interest. Who could’ve imagined five little Japanese ladies would turn my world upside down!
My Band Maid playlist is now longer than my Van Halen, Rush, Kiss, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
The Maids spent time in their own “music boot camp,” living together, doing nothing but eat, practice, sleep, practice, sleep, practice more.
Pick any five random songs and not one with sound the same. The Maids have INSANE depth and diversity of songs.
“Play,” official live video. Fun, arena rock with call and response crowd cheers
“DICE,” official music video. Rumbling hard rock, complex and still catchy
“Puzzle,” official live video. Big, progressive, bombastic, lyrical depth and musical technique on display

Thrill is a great rock tune… but very simple. Band Maid is SO very much better than this song would indicate. You’ll see that as you do more songs of theirs. IMO (and I’ll die on this hill) they are the best, most accomplished, currently active, rock group. The Warning are great as well, but just younger, and have a smaller (though terrific) catalog.
This “live” performance was from an online concert during the pandemic… so it’s very oddly polished as a result. They are amazing, nonetheless, in front of a live crowd. The current hot video to react to is the 2-song video of “Dice” and “Hate?” recorded during this years’ Lalapalooza festival. That will really showcase their live persona for you. The 2 songs flow together, so that’s why it’s reacted to in such a way.

This was them playing their first successful song at an online concert during Covid. It was released during the beginning of their careers over 8 years ago so it was simple compared to their newer songs so there is a reason why it seemed like it was 'easy' for them. You should check out another, newer song (official lives are a good way to go) to see how much they have grown as a band. Enjoyed :)

Great choice of band to react to, they’re a great band! An interesting fact, The Warning and them are big fans of each other! They met up for the first time in 2022 at the Aftershock festival. Despite the language differences they had the common interest in music which drew the together!
Nice reaction an analysis as always, looking forward to seeing what’s next! 🌹

You're correct in saying that this seems effortless for them. The studio version of this song was their first music video, and while it is a great song, it's on the low end of their discography. Ignoring my nostalgia for this song (it was my first Band-Maid song over eight years ago), I wouldn't rank this in their top 100 songs. Most of their songs are much more complex than this one, so while they consider it an important song in their careers, they rarely play it in concert anymore. They like to challenge themselves.

No bad songs in the 'Maid Rock' genre. A few highlights; the 'Dice' MV (great studio sound...and you just know they can do it live anyway so enjoy this superb mix and guitar arrangement), the 'Manners/Black Hole' Live video (musicianship++) and the 'Influencer' MV (awesome video location and cool relevant contemporary rock song). Or just choose at random...you can't miss. Enjoy!! :-)

It's funny you should notice that it seemed so smooth, they've been playing that song for years. So many times that they could probably play it blind folded and backwards.
This official live was streamed during COVID-19 Era and played to an audience less crowd, thus the lack of energy. The Maid's are truly a Live Band that feed off of crowd energy and crowd participation.
For better more current examples of Live Band-Maid I'd recommend the official live videos No God or Puzzle from Tokyo Garden Theatre Jan 2023 (can be found on their official TH-cam Channel) They also have an amazing acoustic version of Puzzle from their Zepp Tokyo Show (2018 I think) that can bring tears to your eyes. A completely different exercise and experience of the same song.
Or a combo Video non official, from their Hulu Lollapalooza Live Stream August 2023 Dice / Hate (can be found on TH-cam)

Nice! The live version of "Thrill!" Excellent choice!
I know this is a strange reference to make for a Band-Maid song but the "web of regrets" part always reminded me of a Butthole Surfer song lyric:
    "Daddy?"
    "Yes, son?"
    "Wh-wh-wh-wh-what does regret mean?"
"Well, son, a funny thing about regret is that it's better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done."
"And by the way, if you see your mom this weekend, would you be sure and tell her…"

Ironically, "Thrill" is among Band-Maid's least _thrilling_ songs these days. But, it is a very very important milestone in the band's direction and success. The performance you chose even, is a bit... _uninspired_ . They were doing their best playing live songs with no audience, and fans were glad to get it! But, really they need an audience to energize their playing and display their charisma.
I hope you keep exploring the band, "Sense" official MV is my recommendation, then off to the Offical Lives of "Play", "Domination" and "Freedom". Thanks for the reaction!

I've already left a comment recommending some Band-Maid songs, but on the topic of Japanese bands... if you are in the mood to discover more new Japanese all female bands and if you are into heavier, more metal music then I highly recommend my current favourite band called "Nemophila" (not IA at the end, just A, its a type of flower).
They're a fairly recently formed all-star metal band - their singer can both scream like a banshee and also produce the cutest pop vocals and everything in between, with such a unique tone to her voice (the main reason I fell in love with this band), and she's such a character. They have duelling/harmonising guitar solos between the two guitarists, and the bassist is known as the laughing thunder due to her sound but also because she, along with the drummer, never stops smiling! The style of their appearance is casual and comfortable. And I can tell you will appreciate the uplifting lyrics juxtaposing the heavier music (a theme of many Nemophila songs). A fun band to try out.
If you like to start with the heavier music I'd recommend starting with either "Dissension" live or MV, which is the most common starting place, or "Rise" MV, my personal favourite song.
A gentler more rocky start but still amazing would be the brand-newly released (yesterday) official live of "Change the World".
They also have some moving ballads such as "Life" (definitely choose the official live), and some straight up fun songs like "Night Flight" (live or MV) which is an 80s disco inspired rock song!!
Plus a big catalogue of covers of all sorts from Foo FIghters to Iron Maiden (and even a comedic Minions "Banana Song" cover!)

A thing about the maid outfits, Killa Ko: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!

My only complaint with this video is that it was made during the COVID lockdowns, when the only way they could connect with their audience was with online streaming concerts, so they were alone with just the crew. They really come alive playing for a crowd.
You might enjoy watching the original Music Video, which dates back to 2014. The original maid costumes make a big contrast.

@@GaryHolloway-810Not agreed with you this time Gary. I think this live version is better. The drumming is better, the bass is better with a quite different notes in the solo section, Mincho’s solo has also improved, especially with the sweep picking at the end of the solo and the vocals are far better. In the MV, they are also only with the crew and without the crowd (obviously 😄). It’s maybe their attitude which seems to be more detached than usual even if Akane and Mincho are smiling. Also, it’s missing the “heys” (Mincho is trying but they cut off her mic 🥺) of the studio version.

The ladies in Band-Maid call the difference between their cute maid look and their hard rock sound, THE GAP. My opinion is that they are one of the best bands to have formed in the past 10 years, and currently one of the best bands on the planet. You did good by choosing a live video in order to fully appreciate their musicianship. Check their TH-cam channel for anything labeled Official Live Video. They play many genres including ballads, power ballads, pop, rock, progressive rock, hard rock, punk, and everything before in-between and beyond. They also have several great instrumental songs that they use live to give their lead singer Saiki (Sigh-Kee) a break. I don't know what musical style that you prefer but you can't go wrong by listening to Onset, Moratorium, No God, Rinne, About Us, Play, and my favorite Official Music Video of theirs Don't You Tell Me. Effortless is a good way to describe them for this song (excepting Saiki, who is at the top of her belting range on this one). With Band-Maid, the live version is always your best bet. The Maids are very businesslike, they rehearse rigorously before entering a studio. They understand that studio time is expensive and cuts into their profit margins. They work until they think the song is "Good Enough" and then they mix and master. But once they get a song "In the Can" they don't stop tweaking things, often imperceptible to casual listeners. Akane has said that she often doesn't have the timing perfected until she can play live to an audience. Akane warrant a close listen: her drumming seems easy but's quite complex. Saiki really shines when shes in front of an audience: she's not just a vocalist, she's also Band-Maid's Master of Crowd Control. When they play live they often play the song with the backing track they recorded for the album release, but they just as often redo the backing track for live performances so they can put in new intros and and solos.
I saw them in Detroit this year where they played "Unfair Game" - a B-side of a single that they had not played in several years. They did a run though during sound check and then blew the audience away when we heard it live. There's no harder working band than Band-Maid. They are consummate professionals.
Shooting "Thrill" instead of "Ai to Jonetsu no Matador" was just one of many good decisions Band-Maid has made. They don't always follow instructions and this has often worked in their favor. I won't say they've never made any bad choices, only that their mistakes have been few and the few have been corrected swiftly.

Welcome to the Maidaverse. Once you hear one of their songs or watch their live videos you probably will want to see more of them. These five young Japanese females are the most professional, cohesive, and creative artists. They have recently celebrated their 10th anniversary with a North American tour (the U.S. and Mexico City). They have millions of followers all over the world through TH-cam. Some future songs you may want to react to are:"Domination", the official live video, "Freedom", the official live video, "Puzzle", the recently released official live video,. As a singer, you will love watching "Puzzle", the official live video and "Puzzle", the official live acoustic video. For the live rock version of the song, please look at the lyrics in closed caption so you will understand the lyrics in the live acoustic version of the song. The two songs absolutely showcase the talent of Saiki, their lead singer. The key goal of a vocalist is to evoke the emotion of the lyrics, and Saiki does an amazing job of evoking those lyrics in the two versions of the song. Another song that shows Saiki"s range is "Wonderland", the official live video. It showcases Saiki's octave rangs. I love all of these young women, despite posting these comments about Saiki, I feel every one of them have incredible talent. The millions of us who follow them religiously call ourselves "Maidiacs". Be careful, you may become one!

Best band this short century. This is also probably their simplest song of all the songs they still play. I would highly suggest watching Domination LIVE because that song is in front of an audience (this was an online only show due to C19) and gives you a real idea of what it's like at their show. That song really shows the pure joy and talent across the entire band and each Maid gets their time to shine.

It should seem well rehearsed since that's their oldest song and they been playing together for 10 years. But then they always sound like that, even on the new stuff. I'm not saying their always note perfect. But if it's an Official LIVE Video they are. You can see a broken string here or a missed note there on FanCam stuff, but you'd be hard pressed on the Official stuff.

MISA's bass solo is a bit more complex in this live version than in the original mv, though it is still one of her more simplistic solos (MISA is a virtuoso, and there are a number of live songs where she just goes straight ham)! The only drawback to the live version versus the original mv is the lack of Miku's (rhythm guitar, second vocalist) "Hey!" shoutback in the choruses, which I'm sure the crowd takes care of live (I don't know for sure, because the two times I saw them in Chicago and St. Louis, they didn't play Thrill, or at least I don't remember them playing it).

Yeah, this is a catchy little banger, isn't it. But the BAND-MAID rabbit hole is deep. Hmm, Miku, Kanami, and Akane are wearing maid outfits for sure, but is it just me, or are Saiki's and Misa's dresses not really maid outfits? I love Saiki's dress though, it looks classy and beautiful, her whole look is nice with the blue flower in her hair.

Interesting choice to go with a live version out of the box. When people recommend Thrill, I think they tend to mean the music video as an intro, because that's how a lot of reactors end up being introduced to them... which I think is out of a sense that this is how a lot of the internet was introduced to the band. Almost traditional to recommend it at this point.
But it's easy to look at the concept and think, "This is a gimmick band, I wonder if they can play live?" and go look for live performances (I sure did). Well now you know they can play. That said, as others have commented below, this was during lockdown, and not in front of an audience. My guess is that they made this one because there wasn't an official live video for this song (they have official live videos for many of their pieces).
The point being that the smooth, polished, well-rehearsed and easy performance (as you point out) you're seeing here is for a song that I don't think is a favorite of theirs to play (perhaps because it's one of the few they have from the early days that they didn't write themselves). Having seen them live in Chicago last year, I can tell you that they're much more fun and dynamic in front of an actual crowd. You can see this better in pretty much all of their other live videos (especially the ones in front of crowds).
I think you weren't super impressed, and I'm not surprised. I hope you try them again, however; and again, I would suggest their "Domination" live video. I think you'll continue to enjoy Miku's lyrics (she's the backup singer/rhythm guitarist/lyricist). A lot of them are about not being bound by convention, and taking life by the throat.
Just a huge fan of the band, and I like your reactions a ton as well. :)
