    1974 - This lift was being soldered together, while I was being born. Look at how neat and well laid out that wiring loom is behind all that beautiful old relay logic. It is amazing what they could do with a bucket-full of relays back then. :)

      Thanks :) I downloaded all youtube's audio library, went through about 600 tracks and selected the ones I liked, or would fit the footage. All takes time! But I feel it's worth it in the end. I don't really care about having to continuously upload stuff, but the stuff I do upload I like to be quality!

      I totally agree. I saw some footage recently from some members of our 'community'. It shows the mentality of certain people, their complete lack of respect for things that don't belong to them, lack of common sense and responsibility.

      Probably cost related I would expect. I bet what they wouldn't tell you though, is the cost still involved with the fancy new equipment! Probably goes wrong far more than we are aware of.

    I guess these lifts were two-speed because at 6:20 under "LCR" is "LR" and next to that is "Leveling relay" which means that these lifts weren't just some base models. Also, these lifts have a dispatcher/lift chooser which was advanced for the time. That does seem weird though because supposedly the only lift companies installing lift choosers at that time were Express, Otis and Schindler.

    I'm so happy i found this channel because i felt so weird with my obsession for elevators and especiall motor rooms. It's nice to find thousands of people like me. I just wish i had a friend i could show all my favorite creepy elevators to and get super excited about it without them just going "uuuh okay it's an elevator...".

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I felt the same way. Before youtube came about in 2008, I was embarrassed to open up about my interest in lifts. I'm really annoyed that youtube didn't start a bit earlier, as in the 2000's I went into loads of motor rooms and went in loads of old and interesting lifts. I wish I'd know to take more photos and videos of them!
      Feel free to message me about your favourite creepy elevators though, as this is JUST WHAT I LIKE! :)

    Wow, awsome vid !!!. A was waiting for this derelict (and a bit creepy) classic motor rooms. The cabinets looks untouched. Sure this lifts will work with minor service. Waiting for the realy logic explanation. You will even go into the dispatcher cabinet ?. Bennie is the one with latching relays ?. I didnt spot ant floor selector. Nice find, filming and edit. Worth the wait.

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many thanks for your comment :) :) I have my theories about how the dispatcher works, but I cannot believe I forgot to take a photo of the circuit disgrams on the wall!!! All my material comes from another Bennie lift where I did take photos of it, but it didn't include a dispatcher. Too late now :( The floor selector part is coming up in next part :)

  • @MrDubje
    @MrDubje 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    It was still roped? Why were they taken out of service? The editing of your video's is great. You must have spend a lot of time on it :)

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Thanks, yes this is the best part of a month's editing (in my spare time that is, of which I don't get a lot of!). I'm bored of uploading standard ordinary videos, editing like this gives me a "sense of pride" of the videos that I upload.
      The second car park which I visited last time th-cam.com/video/7XMagLePQm0/w-d-xo.html has the original Bennie doors, but both lifts were modernised. This is about 1/2 mile away from this one. I assume that they didn't want to spend the money on this car park to get the lifts modernised, perhaps as this car park is only used for the market? Instead of modernising, they spent some money on caging the lifts off, boarding up the doors and then forgetting about them. No maintenance or future costs. The problem with the old relay lifts is the parts are difficult to replace and there is a lack of knowledge (and willingness) to fix them, so they would have had to be modernised to keep them running.

    From the date 1974 which I am assuming these elevators were installed shown stamped on the data plate. how long have these elevators remained in a derelict state? They were 42 years old when the video was filmed, yes parts are difficult to find especially relays and other parts. Seems odd to take them out of service if still working properly.

  • @CHIMNEY7
    @CHIMNEY7 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    That still looks in pretty decent condition,I wonder if it could still be fired up so to speak?

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm not sure, maybe. Not sure what state the landing doors are in also, so if the door safety circuit was made then I guess it would still work.
      There would be a bit of dust to burn off of the motors though ;) Also, not sure if the brakes would release looking at the state of them!

  • @keithmiller4358
    @keithmiller4358 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    After watching a stack of these videos, I'll never again be able to look at one of these type of buildings, firstly without looking for the motor room, and secondly without wanting to see inside. Interesting stuff. This really gives an appreciation for relay driven logic, and the mass of interconnecting wiring. I believe that the only other place that I am aware of similarly complex relay circuits (except for telephone exchanges), is in older (large) aircraft, typically where the electrical system is of 60s/70s origin. Of course, in modern times, it has all been replaced with microcontrollers and/or FPGAs. I assume that the design techniques used for lift controller relay based logic are actually quite similar those employed in digital circuits, maybe designing it as a state machine?

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting to hear you mention aircraft. I'm into planes but didn't consider their would be relays in an aircraft, possibly as vibrations would potentially move the contacts of an de-energised relay coil. But I suppose that any system before microprocessors HAD to use relay logic of some kind.
      When I post part 2 (eventually!!) I will show the circuit diagram for one of these Bennie lifts.

    • @Colaholiker
      @Colaholiker 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know it is very difficult - but why not combine lift and aircraft.. there have been some commercial airliners with lifts inside. Not for passengers though, but i vaguely remember that one of the two three-engined widebodies (just not sure whether it was the DC-10 or the Tristar, maybe even both) had a lift fo move the catering trolleys from the lower deck galley to the main deck.
      Okay, it's probably next to impossible to find one today wher you are allowed to film it. But the thought sounds nice. ;-)

    • @keithmiller4358
      @keithmiller4358 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are interested, some Russian types that are still flying have a very extensive electrical system with many relays eg: pe.org.pl/articles/2013/2a/70.pdf. I'm also interested in aircraft, and have personally built a light plane here in England, although this has only a single master contactor that is rated for continuous operation (ie. isolation of entire electrical system), including starter motor - by far the highest current device in the whole electrical system. This is pretty typical for light planes. It seems that in the long term, even these contactors will be replaced by completely solid state equivalents, which can often handle 60A at 12/24V - even for even basic models. They have lower power dissipation, and better MTBF, but still cost a little more. However, cheaper models may also not be certified for aircraft flying under a CoA. A typical manufacturer of commercially available plane contactors is White Rogers, and both types can be bought from a supplier like LAS in the UK. Aviation is a super conservative business, so it will probably take 30 years to go solid state fully. I'm quite serious on this estimation. Things in aviation happen super slowly, particularly in Britain, with health and safety bogging us down at every step.
      I'm really from a commercial software engineering background, but interested in learning more on the electronics side, so would be interested in seeing a schematic, and knowing about what else is involved beyond relays. I also wonder if we could use modern EDA tools (eg. Yosys - an open source Verilog synthesis tool) to generate relay logic circuits, instead of CMOS. I know people have built some pretty complex relay circuits to do math...

      The controller for these lifts is fascinating. Hat's off to the engineers that designed and got this working. Where was the one that you saw? Was that recently?

  • @dykodesigns
    @dykodesigns 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wow, it seems like that the controller is still intact. You'd be wondering why they've taken these lifts out of service. Walking 10 flights of stairs.... not very conveint. Those special relays, are they some sort of non-mechanical floor selector? The join detailling on the concrete structure is quite nicely done too.

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're bang on correct with the relays! I'll explain more in next video as they're a little different than a standard relay. It's a facinating and fairly simple design, and complicated if that makes sense! The second car park which I visited last time th-cam.com/video/7XMagLePQm0/w-d-xo.html has the original Bennie doors, but both were modernised. This is about 1/2 mile away. I assume that they didn't want to spend the money on this car park to get the lifts modernised. Tick Tock circuitry for position and call cancellation. This method was also used by Wadsworth Lifts and Express used it on their 50 volt selectors in the early days.There are still a few guys i know who are still working on the Birmingham Council commercial contract who know all about this type of equipment.

      There is a carpark in the neighborhood where I used to live that has a mean looking, and sounding disaster siren on the top level. :D

      haha - when I entered in the footage that was the second time I entered (you can see the cabinet doors are already open) so I already knew what was in there. I did delay shining the torch for a split second to add to the effect, which is probably the chill that I gave you ;)

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's called a YODALARM! I remember them from way back in the 80s. It's a two-tone sounder. The one in the motor room is probably original from the 70s and is probably linked to the fire alarm. Whether it still works is something else!

      Yep! I've been to Boston, and uhmmmm that's about it LOL. But we are coming to Florida very soon :) I've got to drive on the right and have the gear stick (or gear shift as you call it?!) on the right. NOT looking forward to driving in Florida, but I guess I'll get used to it!

    Why are the doors covered ?

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest, I don't know why they discontinued the lift access. With the amount of floors, you would have thought they'd repaired or modernised them. Probably all down to costs, who will pay for the costs and lack of demand.

    • @NathanCE
      @NathanCE 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mrmattandmrchay I'm betting the lifts got failing inspection results, so the carpark went with the cheapest option and just seal the lifts out of service. This looks like the fuses were removed or a seal was placed on the disconnect with the doors blocked with plywood. Fun fact! In Ohio USA, if an elevator gets sealed out of service, the cables are required to be removed with the car & counterweight resting in the pit. Hydraulic elevators need their piping removed.
