What a great video. Most people would have just showed you how to change the fuel pump but you took the time to go through the entire fuel system diagnosis. Very impressed. Thank you
Hey man, stopping in to let you know that this is a great video and has helped me better understand my F115. Ive just started going down the rabbit hole. Just wanted to let you know this video is still helping folks out in 2024. Also, 912 represent!
Lifesaver, and thank you. Outboard- 2008 Yamaha F90TLR Issue- upon starting, the outboard would shut off after 10 to 15 seconds. High pressure VST pump inoperable due to never being changed 257 hours (tested outboard for 20 min on land, ran great, bought this boat, and engine failed 100 yards into the water a month later on the first outing). No outboard experience for me however; I used common sense. Followed this video step by step during disassembly. I recommend that when swinging the intake manifold to the open position, keep an eye out on the pivot point as I had the the big intake hose disconnect from the air filter (every outboard is different based on the year). Most importantly, take a video of every step. I took 10 to 30 second videos. I took 2 hours to clean the VST out (used CLR) and insert new original parts (I did not pre-filled the VST pump prior to assembly but I did used marine grease lightly on the gasket). Once I put the VST back together, I started playing the videos from the last one to the first one in that order. I took all day Saturday to disassemble, clean VST, and partially assemble outboard. Putting the new VST was a little stressful yet; found fuel diagram online and followed numbered pictures (I TOOK MY TIME). I only used the lock washer from the old filter that locks the pump and the filter together. Sunday I had a friend assist me finishing up by connecting fuel rail, intake bolts, and double tapping cables that needed plugging back together. After all was assembled, connected water hose, pumped fuel manually by pressing fuel bulb, primed engine 5 times (stick key in ignition turn one click clockwise 5 to 10 seconds you will hear a low buzzing sound, once sound stops, repeat for a total of 5 times), ensure you turn the water on and crank that baby up. I recommend buying Marine Dual Flow Rectangular Outboard Flusher Muffs $15( This will properly flush saltwater outboards). Outcome- issue solved as the outboard ran for about 10 minutes and thoroughly tested. Next is bilge pump, lights, and ensure all safety equipment is up to date to be water ready. Great content video and yes you did help us.
You are a life saver. I have spent all day trying to work out whats wrong with my outboard. Now i know the problems and know how to fix it thanks to you. Keep making more video GBY.
Thanks for the winterizing tip and for mentioning that drain bleeder valve on the bottom of the tank. I had noticed it and thought it was some kind of needle valve, and didn't know why it was completely closed, why it ported to the intake manifold, etc. Very helpful. Your mention of how to test the power to the pump at its connector with the test light helped me verify that without someone else helping. Nice job taking care to mention all the other things to look out for along the way. Keep doin' the Lord's work!
Very well explained step by step..was looking for same video but a 225 4 stroke yahama BUT THIS GAVE ME A WAY BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE FUEL SYSTEM ..THANK U
I'm hoping this is what is wrong with mine. It's been doing the same thing as yours. It sat for 2 years. I've cleaned and blown through just about everything I can. Great video, very informative!
Another thank you Ray for a great video. If I made a video I think I would sound just like you. I'm an old lawnmower mechanic. I liked your comment on the float just like a lawnmower.
Great video...Just got finish replacing mines (2012 F70LA) after letting it set up for over 6 months. Runs great now! As the video points out, if you got power to the vst but the pump's not running you prolly need a new pump. I went back OEM but that's just me. Thanks Ray
He'll Sir, I don't even know what a BST thingy is (or what it stands for) but that was so endearingly delivered, and with such good intent, that I felt the need to comment so. Kind regards.
A few things... I have a F150 2004 , When you have to go through all the work of going into the VST, order the filter at the bottom of the high pressure fuel pump inside and a new gasket for the tank as well. That filter may look "fine" but it is such a fine mesh that you can not tell if it is clogged enough to cause bogging at full throttle at take off. No sense in having to go through this twice. Besides you may have to do this every 8 to 15 years. Also on the back of your motor ( external next to the VST on mine) is an U shaped device next to the water/fuel filter on the back of the motor, it is a filter too, replace that, as well as the main external next to it... I would install a 10 micro filter inline with the tank gas feed externally, I am doing this now, I wish I did it when I bought the boat new, a screw on filter is a hell of a lot easier to replace than going through all of this as the ethanol fuel is a pain in the ass even when using Stabil or Sea Foam for a fuel stabilizer. I have a 40 gallon tank that never goes on reserve which is at least 10 gallons or more. From now on I will pump all the gas out with a cheap electric fuel pump by disconnecting the motors fuel line and using this to pump out all gas through the reserve setting... If you do not empty your tank by running several times a season you will have always some old gas in your tank... My 2 cents worth...I wish I would have done the above many years ago...oh well...John
3:05 Main water separator/fuel filter and U shaped filters....11:39 Fuel injection pressure test point, schroeder valve, should be 45 psig when first on in 3 seconds......16:05 gasket for both halves.... 16:29 & 18:12 HP fuel pump filter, also notice varnishing internal from fuel.....18:21 clean off both halves of VST housing...
Yes as already stated it is better to replace gaskets and filters as you go. And it is best to run non ethanol gas as well. Thanks for your comments the more comments the more it helps others.
Yes Big thanks to you for your extra effort. I have a 04 Yamaha 115 it has the same setup and the same issues with starting. On the older engine like this it is good practice to replace the rubber gasket fyi thanks again!
This was an excellent video! I’m having a similar problem with the 115. I hope it isn’t the pump because I won’t be able to get one before the 4th, but this was very informative. Thank you very much!
Sir this is the best video on a fuel system with a vst system on you tube. May I ask if you don't have power going to your get with the key in the on position, where would you look next? Checked the obvious. Neutral safety switch, lanyard switch etc. Just thought I would ask. But props to you. You should make more of these style videos for us diy ers
Yes check the simplest things first. If you have no power to the switch. Definitely check lanyard it will get you everytime. If you have a power switch check it and fuses. Battery etc.. you may can make sure it's not in gear even if it looks like it's in neutral. Follow the fwd./ reverse cable back to engine and check. That's about all I can think of right now. But good luck.
This is the best video of showing step by step, something like this u will lose maybe 500 easy to boat mechanic. I do have a question, if the fuel filter does have fuel leak, like a Crack on the fuel filter, can that cause a no turn over also? Like it will just crank and crank like ur motor with the bad fuel pump problem also?
Great video. Very helpful. Where did you get the after market high pressure fuel pump. Definitely dont want to pay original part price. Any info is appreciated.
No sir. Just make sure it's firing and getting fuel it should start. But I'm not a boat mechanic either . I just know a few things that may help someone out. Thanks for your comment. Sorry I can't help you out. Just hard to diagnose something that's not in front of you.
Your video was great. I have taken my vst off so many times. I replaced the pumps both high and low, filters…but I still lose power at 3/4 to full speed. It runs great then boom half the power. Then it kicks back in and runs for another 30 seconds then loses it again. I am baffled. What do I need to read fuel pressure? Tire gauge or a fuel pressure gauge?
@moleisrich1 I'm not really sure I haven't hooked one up. But I would hook a fuel pressure gauge up. Should make one that screws on so it don't doesn't leak gas all over you and the engine. But I only work on my own stuff and I'm not a mechanic.
Hi. thank you very much for you video. My Yamaha F40FETL VST separator is clogged once a year and need to be opened and cleaned. The other fuel filters are always clean as brand new. Do you know how it is possible, and where is the problem ? I think it may be due to a plastic pipe, but i didn't find the problem.
I'm really not sure why it's getting clogged. If it is setting up for months at the time it will gum up and need to be cleaned. I use non ethanol gas to help prevent the fuel breaking down as bad. Also stabil fuel additive helps some. Draining the vst separator helps for longer storage. But the best thing to do is actually put the muff's on it and run it some every couple of weeks or so.
I think this is the exact problem with my 115 Yamaha. It'll only start with starting fluid and is not getting gas for some reason. I'll order that part and will get back to you.
Gday mate this is a great teaching video to help others who have the same or similar problem always take photos because you can be sure the photo you dont take will be the one that stumps you i hoe when you did fire it up you have water running to it i didnt see a teltale maybe just the video .
Great video... great DETAILED video Ray. I have a question for you that I hope you can answer. 2 days ago I was cruising in from off-shore out of Ponce Inlet doing about 27 MPH in my Yamaha 115 - 4 stroke. Got almost all the way back in and the engine sputtered a couple times and then shut down. The air temp was around 95 degrees and the water temp is in the 80's. I had SeaTow pull me into the dock but the 45 minutes it took for them to pull me into the dock, I tried to start the engine 4 or 5 times and she wouldn't fire up. Then right at the dock, I tried it one last time.. and it fired up and fires up every time here at the house (New Smyrna Beach). Your assessment please as to the problem? Also, as a side note, my grandmother was married to a Clarence Cone and both are buried in Ft. Myers, Florida. Clarence was a WWII purple heart soldier and was wondering if he is part of your family tree?
Sorry I'm just seeing your question. I really don't know. Could have been some trash in fuel filters etc. Or like your thinking could be some over heating problems. When my electric fuel pump went out you could pump the bulb real tight and it would fire for a split second and not crank. Then it wouldn't even try to start at all. Some people have even tapped the outside of there vst separator and got them to fire back up. And I'm not sure about the kin folk. I don't think we are.
good video i wish there was more i have 2015 F60 EFI motor and when i tried to drain the VST zero come out is there a way to get air in the unit to drain the fuel ? i run the check you show for the fuse and all fuse are fine and i remove the fuel rail line and turn the key and pump fuel in the bottle i had there i sure its a fuel problem as it starts fine the runs bad then stalls out do you know if i can get any error codes from the motor to find out if there and the problem there thanks for the video was a good help but i still having a problem.
Yes alot of Marine mechanics have code readers that can tell what the problem is. I am not a marine mechanic I don't have a computer that I can hook up to mine.
Amigo buenas tengo un motor parsun no arranca tengo chispa tengo compresión de motor pulsos ... Pero no arranca le eh probado con otra computadora y nada , le hago oler combustible por eo admision y arranca..que será
Thank you for the video. I am in the middle of this procedure and can't get the bolt which is at the bottom of the right side of the intake manifold off. Any help would be appreciated. I can send a picture if you would like.
Ray, very good video, I have a 40 hp yamaha 2015 that I believe the internal electric fuel pump has gotten clogged as engine has not been run in a year. Can you tell me where to order the aftermarket fuel pumps for yamaha 4 stroke? I will be following your instructions, and thanks
Sorry just seeing this. I used highflow.com I ordered a quantum fuel pump. And they did stand behind there warranty. I did the same I let it sit without starting it up any. Contacted high flow and all they charged me was the shipping for a new one. Now if I don't crank it to often I will drain the vst separator.
@@raycone7692 Hi Ray, greetings from Canada. I think the website link above should be mwww.highflowfuel.com/ the other URL is for sale. Great video. My F70LA with 275 hrs. will start and run but not go above 2200 RPM while in the water (no power) and suspect this fuel pump. already replaced the filter & low pressure mechanical pump. hope that is what it is. might just be clogged.
@@ryanrowat6640 it maybe clogged. Could be the filter on bottom of the pump as well. Or maybe the pump isn't seated properly. There is a port on top that you check pressure with a gauge. Maybe you can get a marine mechanic or somebody with a proper gauge to see if it is working as it should before hand. I don't know what the proper psi. It calls for you could probably google it. If that's not it maybe the injectors. But good luck finding your problem.
Took mine out the other day, 03 Yamaha 115. Noticed fuel on the top of the water once I stopped and cut the engine. Boat runs fine and the fuel seems to dissipate after a minute or so. Could this be an issue with the float valve being stuck open? I read that could be the issue but it’s a sealed system, how would the fuel get out of the VST? Seems like it would affect idle or operation if that was the case. Any other ideas on what I should look for would be appreciated. Fixing isn’t the problem, diagnosing is my problem. Thanks for the video
There is a rubber gasket on top of vst separator crank and check and also on the low pressure pump. And like you said check bulb hoses etc. Check hose on vst also.check drain screw on bottom of vst. May can look around injectors too may have a o ring leaking. And your right maybe needle valve stuck.
Nice video but 1 main mistake - this type yama 90hp and 100 hp u can hear high pressure pump easily from port side. Even with cawl on. So you had to start your story from "ignition on and listen". And if u dont hear the sound.. means it stuck. Btw u can fix it. Simlpy submerge in cleaning fluid for 2 weeks. The gap between rotor and vane is so tiny that evaporated petrol leaves residue and it glues togeather
@@raycone7692 it is assembled back and runs perfect. So cannot show. Also boght replacement, and from curiosity decided to flush, and it worked. So now i run the fixed one and the new one is waiting.
Good deal. Mine quit and was locked up tried soaking it as well and taping on it to get it going. But when I found out the replacement wasn't that much and the amount I have to spend on a fishing trip to the flats I not going to take the chance.
@@raycone7692 my unit yamaha 6c51390700. Iocal price 400 euro +-.. and all alternatives were from PRC. so i ordered and decided to fix. This pump has only 1 moving part - rotor. And the pressure is made by the part of only 3mm thickness and diameter as pump. Cant be more simple. Hundreds of unit on market and all has different 12V socket so difficult is to find the socket to match. This pump is called "motorcycle pump" in most cases. Acetone and compressed air will do the job. And simply cycle the + AND - to free the rotor
Mine was froze solin wasn't no way around but to replace. And I have to travel around 75 miles to get to the ocean. So if I spend that much money to go fish. It's better for me to know when I hit the key the pump is going to work. So I haven't made any mistakes by changing the pump. If other people want to free there pump up if it will free up. I say go for it. And I know what you mean about the plugs being different I made a short video about that part as well. Glad you got yours running have fun fishing.
Hey Ray, I have a similar situation but I am not getting any power to the high pressure fuel pump. The fuses all have power, is there a specific relay that controls the fuel pump power or does it come from the main ECU?
I'm not sure on that one. Sorry I couldn't help you out. Would say maybe check your kill switch real good but your getting power to the fuse's. Not sure if power goes to fuse's first then some where else before fuel pump. Let us know what you come up with.
It would start for about 2 seconds and go down. But you could pump bulb and wait a couple of minutes and it would do the same. But I wasn't able to pump the bulb and keep it running.

I am not a 100% sure ... BUT !!! I believe on most of today's modern ignition systems you cannot use a ground to test voltage to a component like the fuel pump. If you look at a schematic, you will see that the ground wire is connected in the computer module, and not to the engine block,, In Most systems today, the ground is switched or controlled by the Computer Module. Please someone correct me if i am wrong,
I'm having similar problem except i'm not getting voltage at the fuel pump. I get about .05 volts. I've read it might be the ECM? any suggestions? Thank you
What a great video. Most people would have just showed you how to change the fuel pump but you took the time to go through the entire fuel system diagnosis. Very impressed. Thank you

Thank you. Excellent video. Nice job.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
Perfect. Exactly what I needed.
Great video! Very informative.
Great video thank you!

Had the same issue on my 2011 F-115 4 stroke as well. Haven't had a chance to diagnose the issue yet. Did you get your issue resolved?
good video i wish there was more i have 2015 F60 EFI motor and when i tried to drain the VST zero come out is there a way to get air in the unit to drain the fuel ? i run the check you show for the fuse and all fuse are fine and i remove the fuel rail line and turn the key and pump fuel in the bottle i had there i sure its a fuel problem as it starts fine the runs bad then stalls out do you know if i can get any error codes from the motor to find out if there and the problem there thanks for the video was a good help but i still having a problem.
Did check the kill switch ECT..
Excellent video. Thank you.

Thank you so much! All the way for the real North Pole in Canada.
Your welcome. I'm glad it helped.
Thanks for a great video 👍

Great thanks although mine is a 2 stroke most of what I see is the same I'm going to try this thanks again
I hope it all goes well for you.
Thank you for the video. I am in the middle of this procedure and can't get the bolt which is at the bottom of the right side of the intake manifold off. Any help would be appreciated. I can send a picture if you would like.
Only thing that worked for me was an open end wrench and very small movement to get it cracked loose. Then it was finger capable.
Awesome!
Thanks for sharing!
Great video, thanks for sharing 👍🏼

Good video, well explained.
Thanks
Thanks Ray! Helpful video.
Thanks nick glad it helped.
Great info. Thank you
Very helpful. Thanks.

God Bless You Sir !!! Thank You !! 😊👍🐭
Your welcome! May the lord bless you as well.
My low pressure pump was pumping, but was responsible for fuel entering the crankcase.
By all means show us. If you would like to unstick yours that's fine I would rather replace mine. But thanks for watching.
Your welcome. As you go along take many pictures.
I noticed your nice tidied up garage like mine.
Yeah it's just a old half storage shed.
Thanks Ray. Does it make sense to drain the fuel pump within the VST tank too?
It wouldn't hurt but the fuel should drain out. But wouldn't hurt to take the pressure off going to the injectors.
Real Deal: Thank You

Hello
Great video. Very helpful.
From what year is this motor ?
Best regards
Christian
What was the motor doing when you ran it? We’re you able to pump ball to keep the motor running?
It would start for about 2 seconds and go down. But you could pump bulb and wait a couple of minutes and it would do the same. But I wasn't able to pump the bulb and keep it running.
Thanks 👍
Good job.
My engine does the exact thing , it just turns over but won’t crank to start. Could that possibly be the issue ?
Thank you!

Your welcome. God bless you as well. Love you too.
what brand was the aftermarket pump? It looks like a quantum. I was thinking about getting one on Ebay. think I should go OEM instead?
Well the following year I forgot to drain the seperater again and it froze up again. So I am going back to oem.
And yes it was a quantum pump. I went threw 3 but was my mistake from let it sit for so long. And they sent me a new pump every time.
Thank you
Can check fuse's if not there then I don't know anything about the ECM. Sorry.
Thanks for reply. Yes already checked fuses. Hopefully not the expensive ECM 😐
Maybe not
