  • A NOSTALGIC look at VICTORIAN Hotels in Newquay, an iconic British seaside resort.
In this week’s video we take a nostalgic walk through Newquay to explore the grand Victorian hotels in this Cornish seaside resort. Our guide is a Tourist handbook to Newquay published in 1932, we look at how things were and how they look today.
In true CWT tradition we have some wonderful stories about these beautiful hotels, including the race to be first, riots and arson, the Beatles visit in 1967, and a very unique lift.

    The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on TH-cam, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
Unfortunately we cannot answer comments coming in more than a week after the publishing date of the video.
    Frequently asked questions:
    Do we do meet ups?
We regularly receive requests to meet up from viewers and subscribers, but unfortunately we do not have availability to be able to do this.
The channel is a very time consuming hobby, fitted around our employment and family commitments. Setting aside time for meet ups, means that we are not able to film and edit our weekly videos that you love to watch.
If you happen to bump into us while out and about, we will be more than happy to have a quick chat!
    Sarah and Andrew
    What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
    What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dog, perhaps you can make up your own name for him.

A lovely concept for a video and the sort of video that is your forte , the elegance of all three hotels is to be admired with their Victorian interiors and you can imagine the liveried staff in attendance back then too. We did like your pictures advertising the hotels with some stand out features, such as hot and cold running water we also spotted their telephone numbers back then with just three digits, we loved it well done,,,,,,,,Brian&Jane

Oh, so interesting you two! Sent this onto my daughter...big Beatles fan! Three wonderful old hotels...now all you need to do is stay in each one of them and give us a review! Love the way you are mixing it up these days with stories and old books to follow with history of places. The more nostalgia the better! x J x

More like this please. Spent most of my holidays in Cornwall, in and around Newquay in particular. My parents honeymooned in Newquay back in 1957 and fell in love with it, so most childhood holidays were there and I carried on as an adult to go to Cornwall. Really enjoyed looking at the history and hearing your stories of these hotels.

Went to the Headland Hotel about three weeks ago & mentioned to the barman that the last time I had been there overnight was Sept 11th 2001. Expecting a comment about the events of that day he said, "I wasn't even born then" - made me feel old! Also went to see the marble gents which were quite spectacular like the ones in the Philharmonic pub in Liverpool. Sadly they are closed, in quite a state & used as the male staff room.

Brilliant video - Certainly a trip down memory lane - I still have lots of affection for the Atlantic it has always been the ugly duckling on the outside but go inside & you will find it transforms into a beautiful Swan. The Headland has always been the ‘opulent’ Hotel and the Victoria was always the Hotel that in the 60’s felt it was Elegant, Grand, & as a mere mortal ‘you knew you couldn’t afford it so you admired it from afar. Loved the advertising book & the tales about the building of the Headland, the Beatles at the Atlantic and the wealthy at the Victoria. You both do these video’s so very well - You bring the past to life worts and all -ha ha!! You can’t alter History no one should ever try - again Very well done.

Amazing video! The beaches in Newquay are really magnificent. And I loved the hotel tours. In 2012 I spent 4 nights at the Hotel Victoria during a group holiday, walking and bicycling in Cornwall. I remember Hotel Victoria as a bit more dated at the time, and I was actually less than impressed by the food so we also had dinner at other restaurants. But they have probably refurbished it now, because it looked impressive and fresh in the video. I sadly didn't know about the lift at the time. I love hidden gems like that🤩 Later I have read that The Beatles' cameramen, technicians and office staff were accommodated in this hotel in 1967. Thank you for a really entertaining and educational video. Torunn 🥰

Was at the Atlantic Hotel a couple of years ago when the in laws stayed there. A very strange place. No atmosphere at all. They paid a crazy £300 for one night in a basic sea view room. I grew up just outside Newquay and as a young child used to clamber over the huers hut. Oh yes, Tall Trees was the best club in Newquay in the 80s. All Newquay hotels had a resident band/orchestra up until the early 80s.

the great western hotel(1879) is the oldest remaining victorian hotel in newquay built many years before the headland and atlantic hotel, also the atlantic hotel was built by sylvanus trevail in 1892 which is why the original hotel looked similar to the headland as it was built first, he also built the carbis bay hotel in st ives, camelot castle hotel in tintagel and another on the lizard.

Worked on the building of the original swimming pool at the Headland Hotel, back around 1979 or so. One day myself and a work colleague were caught not working terribly hard and made to clean the pigeon poop out of the centre of the vaulted roof of the hotel! We had to climb out, with no protective clothing, and scoop up buckets full of the stuff! It was back before health and safety rules! There were some very interesting things happened there, with spooky events, but I loved working there. Only came to an end because I had a motorcycle accident which injured my leg.

Loved the video especially the Victoria Hotel. In the early 1990s, when my daughter was around 7 or 8 she was fascinated by the entrance to the Victoria Hotel lift from the beach. She even went into the tunnel, called the lift, and was met by a well dressed lift operator in a suit and bow tie. She immediately ran away. What a shame it has gone into disrepair and can no longer be accessed.

A Brilliant video of the most Opulent Hotels in Newquay, the amount of research you must do is phenomenal, the stories behind The ‘Beatles’ and ‘Jack Nicholson’ sending his leading lady roses, would never have come to light if it wasn’t for your genius for rooting out history and interesting topics like you both do and Andrews sharp wit is always entertaining, the nearest we ever came to staying at a grand hotel was in ‘Kingussie’ in Scotland called ‘The Duke of Gordon’ which was used as a base for filming the tv. series ‘Monarch of the Glen’ that was an exiting time, and a fabulous series I’ve just started watching again after twenty odd years ago, thanks 🙏 again Sarah & Andrew for a lovely edit 🤗

The Atlantic is a lovely hotel also to stay in , possible on average, superior to the Headland
TheCarrnmarth Hotel is also quite ni e but maybe a little dated now. I'm not sure if it's called Oceanside now
Haha Berties Talltrees and Sailors Arms , blast from the past
New subscriber, could you do a walk down the Gannel and comment pn the old ship Ada and the Fern Pit and history of the Northey family and the two rowing boats that used to trundle across the river in times past , one at the mouth inlet and the one at second bridge by the old Trethellan Farm

Another fascinating tour! Love the old photos! The Witches was a fun movie, and doesn't everyone want Rowan Atkinson as their hotel manager, lol? The interiors are certainly elegant. It was a different world, when ballrooms with live orchestras were all the rage. Here in California, many grand hotels of that era had to be pulled down due to earthquake damage. Fortunately, our Hotel Del Coronado (opened in 1888), has been maintained and remodeled over the years. It was the inspiration for the novel Somewhere in Time (though the movie with Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve was filmed at a hotel in Michigan). There are tales of haunted rooms, and the hotel takes every advantage of a visit by Edward, Prince of Wales, in 1920. There are rumors he met Wallis Simpson there. You both were brave to investigate that tunnel! The stories about the Beatles (and the photos!!) were great. Loved hearing about Andrew's Mum! :)

Ooo! Somewhere in Time - that rings a bell. Did it use rhapsody on a theme of Paganini? I think I was learning piano a the time and my Mum found a very simple version fot me to try! Sarah :)

@@CornishWalkingTrails Yes, you are correct! My young friends and I all worshiped Jane Seymour, and how elegant she looked in that film (1980). I recently found a copy of the book (original title 'Bid Time Return'), by Richard Matheson. Having visited the Hotel Del Coronado many times over the years, I was surprised to see how much the hotel factored into the story. :)

We stayed at the Headland a couple of years ago. We had booked a room for our wedding anniversary before covid and then we actually had the stay 'after' covid. The new prices would of been out of our reach but they more or less honoured the original price and gave us a free upgrade to a beautiful, well like a suite! Fantastic stay. I like to watch your videos of Cornwall. The Atlantic at Newquay was nice for an afternoon scone. Dont know if its still about. Also Carbis Bay Hotel would be interesting to look around. Years ago we stayed at the Headland and was upgraded for free and was told over the coridor from our room was the room the Princes stayed in ie Queen Eliz IIs Dad maybe .............. meant to be some ghosts too. One in the ladies cloakroom. o'er

Ahhh! We were going to feature the Beachcroft but we woefully misjudged how long it would take us to film this video!! Maybe next time! Sarah :)

Newquay strikes me as being a bit of a run-down dump... even back in the early 70's, pubs like the Sailors were always scenes of fights.
it must have been very different in Victorian times

It’s cleaned up it’s act now. In the late 1990s’ish they had huge problems with underage drinking. After sitting GCSEs, kids would come down with a boot full of booze, courtesy of Mum and Dad. Unfortunately some didn’t make it home, and something had to be done. Still a magnet for stag and hen parties though! Out of season it’s a pleasant place to wander around. Sarah :)
