What a fantastic video, and both looking extra fab in your Summer finery! Absolutely love Penzance ~ it's my favourite town in Cornwall, and you bring it even more to life with these amazing histories. The voyage in a lugger to Australia is astonishing ~ that anyone would attempt that in a 36ft vessel, but a true testament to the deeply ingrained expert seamanship of the Cornish. I had no idea of the extent of the white slave trade, and no surprise then that fishermen and their families were so on their guard in those times. I'm guessing that's where 'The Turk's Head' pub in Chapel Street (well worth a visit) gets its name. So impressed with your singing that incredible tongue twister Andrew! x

I traveled to Truro from California to visit relatives. I love your channel and the beautiful history you find. Your walks around Cornwall reminds me so often of another time where I walked those same roads and walkways.
Such fun adventures and great stories! Awesome Major General rendition, Andrew!! The Newlyn Art Gallery is gorgeous Arts & Craft's perfection! The 'voyage of the Mystery' is crazy! The 280 ft 1863 iron hull sailing ship, Euterpe, hauled emigrants from England to New Zealand and India for 25 years, starting in 1871. Later called The Star of India, the restored ship is the 'star' of our San Diego Maritime Museum. I've walked through the ship many times over the years, and can't imagine such a long voyage in the cramped quarters. For anyone to sail that far in a fishing boat blows my mind! Gilbert and Sullivan weren't the first to address the issue of piracy in song. Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio (harem) was written during a period of war between Austria and 'the Turks' of the Ottoman Empire. Those statistics are horrifying. I love how you are both always game for exploring an alley or searching out a plaque. Thanks again for taking us along!

A Beautiful walk full of interesting stories, we visited the very picturesque fishing 🎣 village of Newlyn about fifty years ago, where I purchased a seascape painting 🖼️ by a local artist 🧑🎨 your video just brought back those wonderful memories of an idilic holiday, thank you for a brilliant tour with entertainment from Andrew, ten out of ten for your rendition from a sketch from ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ 👏👏👏👏

There is still an art school in Newlyn at the top of Chywoone hill, in the old primary school, been to a couple of classes there. A friend and I also visited the Stanhope Forbes exhibition at Penlee House, it was incredible. Course there were pirates in Penance 😉.
Lovely to see Penzance again. I was fortunate to be there for part of the Golowan festival and Mazey Day in 2017 (before the pandemic). Great atmosphere!! Best wishes from New Zealand.
Loving the bloopers at the end!!! And there I was thinking that Andrew had mastered that rendition in one go!😊Such a lovely area all around there. Such pretty gardens & narrow streets. It always makes me wonder how on earth the dustmen get down those tiny alleys to collect people's rubbish from the cottages when you do walks around the back streets! Sounds of the seagulls mournful crying follow you everywhere you go there. My daughter was in the Pirates of Penzance at school eons ago. I still have the programme tucked away in the drawer somewhere. Great video as always of course x J x
Just returned from Penzance..it seems the West of the town is more up market than the east. Very nice,place to live and visit,,my father went to Penzance grammar school between 1921 to 1929 vis a bus from St Just..I believe the school is being developed into flats now..thanks for your great walks!
Another great video guys, and we loved your insight into Penzance and Newlyn and your research into pirate times. As somewhere we visit and walk around fairly frequently it was good to learn about some of the places we have often passed without thought.

Another fascinating and enjoyable video. Loved learning about the pirate connection. Often wondered how the Turks Head Inn in Chapel Street got its name. Apparently it was first established in 1233 following the Turkish pirates attacking Penzance during the Crusades. Did you see The Rosebud Memorial Gardens in Newlyn and the plaque about The Rosebud?
Strange Andrew mentioned rabbits because about 25 years ago I was walking down a little path i Newlyn a little rabbit came out of a cottage through a cat flap in the door it was very cute and quirky to see a rabbit rather than a cat emerge.
You jogged my memory with the Folly so I am trying to (mentally) place the Folly Cafe or tea room in Penzance from the 60s. They had lovely studio pottery made by Harry Davis at Crowan Pottery. Can anyone remember it or have I lost the plot?
Its probably a bit late for this comment but I recently found a letter I sent to the D'Oyly Carte theatre company and autographs I received back in 1978!. I had watched the Pirates of Penzance in Oxford.🙂🎵 🎹 🎵

Perhaps the history changers here in Bristol should watch this, and stop trying to put all the onus on slavery on the white man. Re. The computer problem. Did you get it wet ,or feed it after midnight?
If you go back in time Cornwall was the last place in the UK to be raided by the North African slave dealers who raided the UK to capture slaves for the market in Algeria, finally in 1803 was the last raid to capture slaves from the UK. For over 300 years, the coastlines of the south west of England were at the mercy of Barbary pirates (corsairs) from the coast of North Africa, based mainly in the ports of Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli. Their aim was to capture slaves for the Arab slave markets in North Africa.
@@rivergladesgardenrailroad8834 Partly as a result of an inadequate naval deterrent, by the early 17th century the situation was so bad that an entry in the Calendar of State Papers in May 1625 stated, ‘The Turks are upon our coasts. They take ships only to take the men to make slaves of them.’
@@CornishWalkingTrails Yup many died on their way to North Africa and there were still accounts of white slaves ending up in Sudan as late as 1903. Saudi Arabia finally made slavery illegal in 1989. Slavery is still legal in Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad and Sudan
