Here's a brief guitar lesson on one of my favourite open tunings. As used by Keith Richards, Ry Cooder, Billy Gibbons, etc etc. Try this out with some slide guitar, it should work a treat too. Grab your guitar, tune up, and jam along!

I know, right? I bet I've come back to this video 50 times just for the 1 minute intro. It's his TONE and the simplicity of what he's playing. It's not anything complex, but he's playing it with a style and finesse that I could never achieve. I stand in awe, and it sure makes this Les Paul devotee wish for a Tele.

My first thought as a beginner guitarist knocking on intermediate is "how the heck am I supposed to remember all the new chord shapes???" and then you show off the secret cheat code and I feel like the beginner that I am.

@TheMaxKids Part of his secret is an effects unit he uses. I f you search his videos, he showcases it in one of them. Of course, with all due respect to the unit, a lot of the trick is in his fingers, lol. I love Joey's playing style, also love Canned Heat.

I have a Squier Classic Vibe Tele which I keep in open G (with a low D) mainly for Keith Richards moments and for slide playing. However, I hadn't thought about using it for playing other Blues tunes so this was really helpful. I also have a Danelectro 56-U2 which I keep in open D for slide playing. Definitely need to experiment more.

Dude, that opening is just so killer! The triads around 3:50 are sweet too. I could go on - great lesson. I like open G for blues/country rock like everyone else, but I like some mystic dreamy stuff too. I just watched this video, the first of yours I've seen, even though you posted it a couple yeas ago. I'm a late-life beginning guitar player. So far, I've just been concentrating on technique, learning progressions, etc. Haven't really gotten into messing with tones. Just keeping the amp neutral for now. But I love the sounds coming out of your rig. I don't even know enough to describe what I'm hearing, but it sounds like some reverb mixed with a bit of overdrive. Do I have that right? I'm not sure. I'd be really curious to learn a bit about your settings on both guitar and amp to create that sound. Thanx.

That's same tuning I've been playing for 30 years. Leaving 6th string on E is the point. And a lot of players think Open G is good for adding sus4 like keith Richards but actually it's good for playing 7th chords
