I have a Fender Mini Jazzmaster in Open G Terz Tuning which is actually like taking your regular Guitar, tuning it to Open E, and then putting a capo on the 3rd Fret.
Try tuning 6 up to G. You have a massive sounding bottom end with a little natural chorusing. It will not hurt your neck on the typical solid body guitar, and you can always tune it to D when you're not using it.

After 30 years of listening to Malmsteen, Satriani, Vai . . . I realize, what a riff monster Keith Richard is. And . . . . They teach us „Friendship“. And the best, they produce and stay on stage nowadays. They made the Corona No1 Hit „Ghost Town“, love it.
I love Can't You Hear Me Knocking. I'm a beginner and I've been fiddling around with this, it sounds harder than it actually is and it's a blast to play
We play Little Red Rooster in my band sometimes. I have guitar tuned to open E with a capo on the 3rd fret putting me in open G. One of the other guitarists plays his guitar in open G. We dedicate the better part of a set playing different blues rock folk mix of music in alternate tunings. Years ago as a beginner on guitar I focused mostly playing guitar in open G. It got me interested in other alternate tunings and drew me closer to standard tuning. This was a GREAT video.....
Wow you’ve inspired me, when I moved to America I bought about 9 guitars, most just sat there idle, but now Ime gonna use 2 of them with the top string off and play like Keith Richards, Ime excited now, cheers mate 🇬🇧🇺🇸🎸👍
What I do these days is I tune my Guitar to Open E and put a capo on the 3rd Fret which gives me Open G Terz Tuning. It's a bit brighter than the Keith Richards 5 String Open G Tuning in the video (same tuning as a Banjo but the 5th String is 2 Octaves Lower than it normally would be) so it does add some high end.
Addenda: I was meaning 5 7 7 6 x x for the same voicing tone-wise - its much more dull. I'm thru with open G and open A cos I need to do ONE thing right and not show off multi-multi talent like the kind of Jimi Page etc. but I got to admit the ones like Keith got it nailed in terms of sound clarity
@@konradgundel4247 So why not use 7-38 gauge strings & tune to Open G Terz Tuning (GDGBDG)? which is like as if you're playing in open e w/ a capo on the 3rd fret.
Now I got you ! That would brighten up things. But hey, I aint no Brian May... need some meat and never mess with anything below .012 - be it acoustic or electric. Just think of slide guitar. But your approach is just right. Greets from Berlin, Conny
Open G gives a super drone to anything. Try Waterloo Sunset, Go your own way, No Regrets etc etc. Some minor chords are a pain but they're on the neck somewhere!
I'm a complete beginner but have 3 Teles (they're very moorish and each a different pick up layout)so 1 of em is now a 5 string .Great little tutorial cheers .
Sadly, a low E string was killed in the making of this video. 😢 You could have just tuned the poor fello to D. On Moonlight Mile, Mick tuned down to G. Basically a banjo tuning.
I saw an interview with Richards and he emphasised that the reason not to have the bottom string active was to make sure the root note of the chord is G. I have a Tele set up like him with 5 strings and I use my usual 10-46 set but move them up a notch so that the top string is 13 and the bottom 5th string is the 46. (a spare 10 is always useful for other guitars) There doesn't seem to be a lot of bending involved with Open G Stones songs so heavier strings work for me.
Hi Andy, that was a Great lesson I just tuned my second guitar to open G tuning today and since I was High School when I first heard The Rolling Stones, and Beatles I've love the music for years, Thank you very much,
I was age 14 when I first fell in love with the sound of slide guitar, courtesy of Brian Jones' playing on "Little Red Rooster." It was the first traditional blues song ever to top the singles chart in the U.K. I brought my vinyl copy of "The Rolling Stones, Now!" to school in the spring of 1965. When my 8th grade classmates heard Brian's slide guitar, they told me my record must be warped.
Thanks for this. I’m the bassist who sometimes has to play gtr and at the moment I have one tuned in open g. I know alll of these in standard E, but they definitely sound better in open G. Thank you for the tips.
Just getting into 'Open G' on my Takamine with slide. I'll now start to bring in the outside slide fingers and see what happens. In the band, we're only using this for "Rooster" at the moment, but, I can see other possibilities...... Thanks for the demo's !
Finally run into an English-speaking person who pronounces "capo" properly. What a relief. Thank you. Excellent lesson too. Though I have done a bit of open E tuning, I've never tinkered with open G. More, please.
Wow-Little red Rooster I hadn't heard that in awhile. I'll be back in a few minutes-I have to go listen to that and I'll be back-what a monster blues number that is-great words and laid-back blues-wow-Thanks for the reminder.
@@Heldotb I like it, it makes me sound like I know what I'm doing! It's a great riff for jamming and messing around with the G minor pentatonic scale, so a lot of times I just pull it out without actually playing that song in particular.
Seen like a million Keith Richards tutorials informing viewers that he removes the sixth string. This is the only one I've seen where the teacher takes a pliers and snips it off. Hilarious. Anyway, really nice lesson. I use open G for blues and country rock, but you can also get some dreamier sounds. Hope you don't mind me mentioning Rosetta West - Deeper Than Magic (labyrinth version) as an example.
First, purchase or borrow a guitar. Second, practice practice practice. I started on my aunts old Martin acoustic @ the age of 9. 3rd buy new equipment! 4th practice again! 5th play it over and over again, until you get it right. 6th, you'll never be another Keith or Eddie etc. 7th, Keep Rockin'❤
If you don't want to take the bottom string off, just try loosening it and let it flap, then tune the others as described in the video. It's not perfect but for those who can't justify taking a dedicated Open G guitar just for one song it would do the job.
Unless you are going to keep your guitar in open G mode, I suggest you keep the sixth string and keep it mute. The truss rod balances the string tension and by taking the thickest string out you will have an imbalance and the truss rod will move towards negative relief and buzz.
The fact you can play sway in open G too so if you're playing along to the sticky fingers album you go to brown sugar and then you just go right into Sway And if you want to play happy you also play that an open G but you put a capo on fret 4
If you cut a string off, the total tension on the neck goes down considerably. Which WILL cause your intonation to be wrong and possibly will cause fret buzz. If the guitar has a tremolo bridge you just messed up that balance too. Don’t cut any strings ever.
I haven't tried any trick tuning since high school. Maybe just time one guitar to open G and try it. Haven't used a capo since high school either. Always thought it was cheating. At least that's what I was taught by some of my mentors. But thanks! New ideas
How about a lesson on Hillside blues? A fantastic stones gem that is still pretty obscure. It's on TH-cam. Apparently, it was cut a couple of weeks after Mick Taylor joined the band.

It was a fine pagan and hedonistic sacrifice to vice, fast and dirty living, and the gods of Rock and Roll, none the less.
That low D is fifth inversion which most all country bluesmen used in staple alternating bass line
Try tuning 6 up to G. You have a massive sounding bottom end with a little natural chorusing. It will not hurt your neck on the typical solid body guitar, and you can always tune it to D when you're not using it.

Alas, the tuning that makes anyone into a rock star!
Just tune the top string from D to G. The first two strings are in G. It gives it an almost symphonic sound
