Love open G, started playing Stones a while back and it's so much fun. Have a guitar that I leave in open G all the time now.
Nice! I have a Gibson es125 that I do the same with!
Meh, I have two Variax and _four_ Peavey AT-200s which means I'm able to switch tunings mid-song. AT-200s also auto-tune (without changing string tension) and virtual capo-up and capo-down. Love these things.
Wow! What a great tool. Thanks for sharing.
Another great video, Dwane. I also keep one of my guitars in open G. I've found that It is a good way to interest young people to the electric guitar, even if they've never held one. I usually start them off with "Bad to the Bone". The expression on their faces is priceless. That's one cool shirt, BTW.
Thank you! I dig that shirt too!! Open G tuning is so much fun and open a whole new palette of sound! I can imagine the face of a beginner when they first hear that classic riff and see how simple it is to play! Have a great day!
Great video...! Thanks!!
Easily one of the best Stones lessons I've ever seen. It's amazing how much you can learn in 15 minutes. Also that Strat you"re playing sounds fantastic.
Thank you so much, Len! I appreciate the good vibes!! Keep on Rockin!
I'm always discovering new talent on TH-cam. I love this video. You are a real Rocker.
Thank you so much! Your kind words are fuel for my fire! Is there a subject I could cover for you?
Great review of open G riffs! It's lots of fun and people who haven't tried it really should. You'll pick it up really quickly. Plus it's a commonly-used key for slide and makes it less noisy and less intimidating...for me, at least. Love your original work, too. Keep 'em coming!! Another great open tuning song: Jungle Love by Steve Miller, in open A. One of the more enjoyable challenges I took on.
Thanks for the good words!! Jungle Love in Open A? Wow, didn't know that! I'll have to check that out! Thanks for the tip!!
Awesome playing !🎸
Thanks Dwayne!! 😊
Super! Thank you! 👍 👏👏👏
Wow thank you so much James!
Thanks for this important and well done overview. Much appreciated
Thank you!
I had your channel up for the first time ever, my son walked in and said, that guys got it right!
Thanks , keep up the great work KC
Thanks for the good word Ken!!
Love the way you show simple easy but awesome ❤
Thank you Ken!
Awsome I learned alot from your clip. Keep the keef going
Thanks a lot!! I will most likely do a vol 2. Keef is the king of open G. So much good material to choose from! Any one that I missed that you'd like to see?
Another great video Double D‼️🤠
Cheers Brother!!
Great video!
Thank you Robert!!
Thank you, these are great. You've inspired me to give Open G "Keith Riffhard" tuning a real try. Well done sir👍
I’m not even a guitar player and I love this video,,, I dig hearing these riffs isolated like this. Sooo cool.
Thank you! Much Appreciated! 😊
Great video! 👏👏👏
Thank you!!
Nice job Dwayne ❤
Thank you very much! Is there anything subject I could cover for you?
brill tutorial on the Stones, loved it well done Sir
Thank you kindly
I love open G! ❤
Thanks! Bro! 👍🏻😉
The pleasure is a mine! Keith is the a true Open G ambassador!
@@doubledsrockschool That is why my Telecaster is ALWAYS in open G with only 5 strings!👍🏻😉🎸
best g tuning tutorial so far, thank you
Wow! Thank you!! What are are your favorite open G songs?
Very, very, very good! Thank you.
Thank you very much!
Just discovered you, great post, great tone, a tone very close to the one I use a lot.
Thanks Freddie! I appreciate the good vibes! 👍
Nice job! Thanks!
Thank you!!
Great video! List of songs: Brown Sugar, Honky Tonk Woman, Can´t you hear me knocking, Happy (capo), Jumpin´Jack Flash (capo), Tumbling Dice (capo), Start me Up, Gimme Shelter
Thank you!!
Great video sir. I’ve been playing almost 50 years, it’s about time to learn the correct way to play these gems. Did most of them in standard tuning
So did I for many years!
@@doubledsrockschool Impressive!
Excelente video, lo disfruté mucho . Saludos desde Querétaro México.
Gracias amigo!
So great, really appreciate you doing this. You left out the intro to Can't you hear me knocking. I would love to learn that. I'll look at your other videos. Maybe you did it there. I really like your playing. I will follow you now!
Wow! Thanks so much. I'll look into the intro and post it in an upcoming video.
Thanks for taking the time to reply! Also, I am in love with your strat! The color with that pick guard, it's just awesome. If you could tell me about it I would really appreciate it! You rock!!!
Wow! Thanks so much for the good vibes!! The strat is a parts-caster. The body I bought is a WSG '63 start template from Guitar Fetish dot com. The neck is an '80's Japanese neck and the pickups are all Dimarzio, the bridge is an Injector middle is aa Area 61 same as the neck. I put orange drop capacitors on the tones knobs and that sweet pickguard I bought on Amazon. I love hot rodding strats!
Good stuff man! You seem like a fun dude👍🏻🎸
Thank you Bob!! I appreciate the good words!
I really enjoyed the video. Keith's solo song Take It So Hard could also be on this list. 🙂
There are so many great Keef Open G moments!! I agree!
Viva Open G! Well Done Dwane!
Thank you Luc!!!
I have a 4 string Cigar Box Guitar I play in open G. Gonna watch more of your videos, they're great! 🎸
Thank you!! I love cigar box guitars!
AWESOME POSSUM !!! 😊😊
I love the tunes you wrote !!!
Thanks man!! I appreciate the good vibes!
Thank you very much Chief. A simple hand written sketch on chrods that you use will be great help. Cheers from Indonesia
I appreciate the feedback! I will do that. We are a brand new channel! Good things are coming.
Well done my friend!
Thank you very much!!
I'm getting back to playing after far too many years with my guitar shoved up in the attic. I'm 30 years further down the line and since I last played "in anger" the music world has changed with the arrival of the Internet. Now there's so many sites to learn from like here that were never available before. I think I'm going to enjoy making up for lost time. That guitar in the attic? Totally useless now but I've just bought a beautiful old strat and can't wait to get into some of Keefs riffs.😊 Thanks for the demo!
Wow! That's such a great story! Welcome back! Is there a subject I can cover you? Adult learning is what I am best at.
That makes at least two of us!
Type in marty music his guitar lessons are really good
Well done!!
Thanks man!!
What a beautifull video man!!! Iwill like to listen on your hands Street figthing man. Is the first time I can see how to do open G afination cleary. A huge regards from Argentina. We LOVE Stones and they LOVE we.
Thank you so much Claudio!! I will do that one is Open E. Keith Richards has a lot of songs in Open E!! I will make that video soon!
Thanks!
Wow!! Thank you so much!! Cheers!
Absolutely great demo!
Thanks so very much for this and what great playing!
Do you know what tuning Barry Gibb uses as he seems to use something similar to open G.
Well done on this!
Thank you so mich for the kond words! I will look into the Barry Gibb question. It's a good one!
Good fun video.
Thanks Rob!
Man you really sound great.awesome player.
Wow! Thank you James! 😊
Heh! That second (last) Dixon...
ROLLER.... Inspiration?
Just at the front end there.
Anyway, open G really is a great and helpful way to write riffs and rock n roll. You're just more "set up" to rock.
Thanks for the nice clip,
April 🍷

Yesssss
Love the open g tunings ❤
Cheers, man!
Thank you, me, too!!
Holy moly you've opened all the doors that were locked . For me just learning to play ...
Hey Doug. I am so happy to hear that. Is there something else I can cover for you?
Played bass my whole life with a 20 year break now I wanna play a guitar & Keef is my hero ....
What a great story! Enjoy the ride!!
what up groovy dude!
Thanks man!!
Bravo! Molto belle ❤
Grazie amico mio!
Great Job! Greetings from ol' Germany!
Thank you Harry!
I was just giving "Love You Live" a listen. Not sure why that live album gets lukewarm reviews from some, I think it's great and it's a real open G showcase for Keith. Anyway, thanks for a good fun lesson. I could use more detail on the Can't You Hear Me Knockin' intro - that one's tough for me. I play open G a lot, but I like to go for the low notes on the D and wouldn't dream of taking it off. Hope you don't mind me mentioning one of my open G songs - Rosetta West - Deeper Than Magic (labyrinth version) on TH-cam.
For sure, I will check out your tune! Thanks for the feedback. Can't You Hear Me Knocking has a challenging groove. Keith is so funky on that one.
Great video Dwane! Curious what you played through to get that killer tone?
Thank you, man! I am playing through a Universal Audio Dream '65 pedal/preamp. It is amazing! Very flexible. I am using a classic Fender Deluxe Reverb setting, but there are a few different settings that are really awesome with more gain and growl. I highly recommend the Dream '65. Love it.
PS...😎 Cool original music...👍🏻😉❤
Thank you so much!
Thank you double D
My pleasure Rick!
Great tutorial! In the spirit of Double Ds, how about some Derek and the Dominos?
That would be a worthy subject!
I like to tune low E to G. Great video.
Thank you!! I bet that gives a nice, thick sound! Good idea!
thank you
My pleasure!
Saint of Me, later classic. Love that song.
Thanks for the tip!!
Man you're dangerous - thank you for that!
Thank you for the good vibes Tom!
Love your playing! Great content! It irritates me to no end when people say the Stones should just retire....if you are enjoying what you are doing and people are paying to see you....why in the hell would you???!!!
I totally agree!!! Have you heard the new album?? There are some GREAT tracks!!! They haven't lost anything!!
Yeah I got a vinyl copy...really strong record! Pretty amazing for this point in their career!
Totally agree!
Love the shirt
Thanks!
Thx
Thank you!
Cool video but I do want to point out that you’re playing Jumping Jack Flash wrong. On the part when you hit the single strings, on the third note you’re supposed to rotate between your first finger and ring finger. On the second repeat of that riff, the note is supposed to go two steps higher, then back to the first on the third time. It’s hard to explain it on here (that’s about the best way I can explain it) but listen to that riff again carefully, even slow it down if you can and you’ll totally hear what I’m talking about. :)
Thank you for the feedback! I will definitely check that out!
Blown away!!!!
Thanks man!!
Thanks for explaining how to tune in Open G, Keith Richards style. Why did you tuned the E string when Keith doesn't use that string ? I would have liked to know what the other chords were as I am still learning and I find it difficult and too fast to keep up with some of the tutorials here on TH-cam
Just because Keith removes the top string doesn't mean everyone has to. You can still play the songs with the top string on. Most players who use open G leave it on. When you say you want to the other chords, do you mean all the chords in one song? What song would you like to learn?
@@doubledsrockschool I wasn't suggesting anyone remove the E string, I wanted to know why you tuned it and how did you know what key to tune it to ?
Oh, sorry. I misunderstood. I have the open G tuning memorized. From low strings to high strings, 6th string is D, the 5th is G, the 4th is D the 3rd is G and the 2nd is B, the 1st is D and there you have a wonderful open G chord with D in the bass. So when you play a G chord, you can mute the top string, and you'll have G, the tonic on the 5th string. It's just a memorization thing. Does that help?
@@doubledsrockschool Yes thank you, perhaps I didn't explain properly. I have listened to Keith Richards play open G but like all Stones concerts and videos it's not a learning experience.
@@doubledsrockschool Hello again DD I'm sorry to be bothering you with questions about Open G tuning again. I noticed that Keith Richards has a Capo on the 5th Fret on electric guitar - is that correct ? He also played on or near to the 5th Fret on Acoustic guitar without a Capo. Do you need to use the Capo to achieve the open G sound?
Exxxxxxxxxcelent
Brazillllllll
Thank you!!!! 😊
Sorry I always played them wrong in E tunning as best I could though I knew something was wrong but I only had one guitar n didnt want to mess up my tuning pegs I was a kid we had no guitar teachers. I been thinking about trying this on an old Squire strat copy and as werll how many slide songs are there in this tunning?
I had the same problem growing up. So many of those songs sounded almost right, but something was lacking. Lot of slide playing in Open G but open E tuning is a favorite of Blues players like Duane Alman and Johnny Winter amongst others....
All about the grove!
You know it!!
Ain't no big thing; I really like it!!
Thank you!! 😊
Knockout sound and riffs! 😜
Thank you!
Just my opinion, but I think Giveme Shelter is much better in open E tuning.
I agree!
You can leave the low E string tuned to E, it still works. I don’t like Strats but that’s a nice one!
Thanks for the tip!!
@@doubledsrockschool thanks for the great video :)
And this is why a 3 string cigar box guitar tuned GDg makes all these riffs so much fun!! Why? Because 6 strings are 3 strings too many!! 😄🤣
Hey! What more do you need? What is your favorite to play on the cigar box?
@@doubledsrockschool my favorite Stones tunes are Brown Sugar (that opening riff is killer!), Gimme Shelter, Start Me Up, Hang Fire, Waitin' On a Friend, Shattered (though I play that on an EBe cbg), there are so many! I play Pearl Jam tunes, Foo Fighters, Green Day (Jesus of Suburbia is epic!), ZZ Top Black Sabbath, ...I've also been working on adapting PF's Dark Side of the Moon for the past few years (Us and Them is my favorite) That said, I do mostly the chords not much of the soloing ... I've compiled a notebook of tunes with my shorthand version of tabs (that only I can understand...well mostly...months later I'll look at a "tabbed" tune and think "Geez, what's that mean? Why did I write it like that? 🤣)
I took guitar lessons in the mid '60's, hated practicing and quit. When I discovered 3 string cbgs about 6 years ago and found I could play rock I was hooked! I build'em and play'em!!
Well, that was probably way more than you needed to know!! 🤣 but, thanks for asking!!!
That's super cool! Thanks for the details! So many great ideas! Is there a place where I could see one of your cigar box guitars. I have a 4-string cigar box that I tune GGDg. I was thinking of doing an episode on that. What do you think?
How about doing lessons on Bee Gees Barry Gibb open D tuning songs
I love the Bee Gees! Especially the singer/songwriter stuff earlier on in their career.
If you leave the 6th string on tune it down to D.
Was hoping you'd do Wild Horses.
I did on vol 2!
Try "Street Fighting Man" capo on 5. Open G heaven.
Love it!! Thanks for the tiip!!
Vous pouvez jouer WILD HORSES (open G)
J'ai joué Wild Horse dans ce video et j'etais obligé de l'enlever a cause de les doites d'auteurs. C'est pour ça que photo as le 10 avec un X et un 9 en place. : (
Hi- How about ‘Tell Me’. Thanks you!
lnstead of tuning the bottom E to D or removing it try tuning it to G. lt gives you a solid bass having 2 G's and leaves 6 strings on the guitar for retuning.
That is a great option. I like to have the D on the top. It gives a nice low-end punctuation when you go to the V chord. But tune my cigar box guitar with 2 G's in the low end. It sounds thick! Thanks for the tip!!
Mr. Dwane is a great teacher, I will highly recommend him
Thank you!!
Hey Double D! If you've read Keith's book, he talks about hearing bands trying to play Stones songs in standard tuning, and they just don't sound right. IF you don't know "the secret" of open G, you don't get it.
I read his autobiographie, and I loved it. I spent years play JJ Flash and Honkey Tonk in standard and of course they never sounded right. In 2010, I learned Start Me Up and Happy in Open G and the rest just fell into place.
Keef Rules!
King Keef!
Wouldn't happen to offer private lessons would you? Even once a month if you don't have much time.
I am super busy these days, but that can be arranged in a Zoom or other streaming app. For sure. Email me, and we can make arrangements. DwaneDixon@DwaneDixon.com

Alright. I will get back to you shortly!
JJF studio version : standard - JJF Live : open G. Here you did a mashup.. with intro from studio version which is wrong
Thanks for pointing that out! Next time, I'll ring Keith on the hotline to clear it with him first.
One and the same way of playing for so many years...
He does do lots of other stuff as well
Cool video but the opening to Can't you hear me knocking is wrong
Thanks, I know....
Can’t You Hear Me Knocking has slides and bends, JJF is open E, and other minor critiques…
otherwise, nice job!
Thanks forvthe feedback!
@@doubledsrockschool 'thanks for the feedback'.....psycho obsessive uber-nerd who should definitely get out more.....!!
Keith Richards couldn't play Jumpin' Jack Flash in open G during the Beggars Banquet sessions in 1968 for the simple reason that he learned this way of tuning his guitar from Ry Cooder during the recording of Honky Tonk Women in 1969!
He changed the way he played that song over the years. I have footage of him doing bothopen E and G. Same woth Gimme Shelter.. Thanks for the feedback.
This dude has got some serious creepy "serial killer" stares, good riffs though.......
Respect to you Mr Axe Man.
Serial killer stare? Lol. . .that's first. 😆
No telecaster?
No tele....sorry. i orederdd a custom Telecaster, I am waiting on delivery. Next time!
At 0.57 you started to say the top string, Keith takes the top string off, the E or Bottom E is what Keith removes not the top E string, WTF are you talking about, the thickest string is the bottom string, not the top.
The top string from the looking down on your guitar perspective. But I understand that semantically speaking, I was wrong. I deserve to be flogged.
Why is Keith fond of open g tuning?
I don't know. I would asse that he discovered open G in his early years when they were covering blues songs from the Chicago blues masters who used open G often. But that is just an assumption on my part. I wish I could ask him personally.
Where was "Little Red Rooster" ??????
Vol 2 on it's way! ; )
You have to drag from the F in Can't you hear me knocking
Thanks man! I appreciate the feedback!
Paint it black works in G
Oh wow! I have never tried that.
What about wild horses and you can’t always get what you want on acoustic guitar an open G? Do you have actual lessons teaching slowly these intros and the entire song also showing the chord charts because it’s hard to see what your fingers are doing?
I am working that right now! I will be adding tablature and chord boxes to help you see what I am playing! Thanks for the feedback!
Here's one with Wild Horses....th-cam.com/video/yMRiq4-GtUk/w-d-xo.html
That wasn't Can't Ya Hear Me Knockin' 😂
Let's see your version.
@@doubledsrockschool The main riff? I'll dig an amp out and do it. Give me time to find my little amp. Probably get it up tomorrow with another BMX video filmed in like 97-2000. I'll even play it on a Keith guitar. The '72 Tele. Custom reissue as seen on my TH-cam pic. No hard feelings. Just a lot of notes missing. I'll let you know when it's up. You play the opening lick to Honky Tonk Women right with the bend. I slide a full step. Keith does the slide more often these days but you're playing it like the album. I play Jumping Jack Flash in standard, yours sounds way better in the open G. Gimme Shelter is originally in open E right? I played it standard. Prodigal Son is the only one I went to open E.
Is that palor guitar hanging up a Stella by chance?
It is a Gretsch. Fun little guitar.
@@doubledsrockschool it's up on an unplugged out of tune Tele Deluxe.
no 7?
That was supposed to be Wild Horses, but we had a copyright issue. That's why the 10 has an X through it. We had to delete a scene.
How about kinks guitarist Dave🇬🇧 Davies🤔
He is a riff master for sure. Did he play a lot of open G?
I,my self don't play the guitar. I'm just a fan of their music. I take
it you're,not familiar with their music🤔
The Kinks are a huge band for sure. I know all their hits, and I think they are great song. I sure Van Halen really liked them too! I don't know their entire catalog. I thought you could help me out there. Any favorites?
Arthur Lola twenty century man Their live albums,One for the road and To the bone.
Tumbling dice?
Amazing song!
l like 6 strings rather than 5.
Me too!
yes. but when you are on a large stage and play with your body as much as anything else, not to mention always moving and keiths picking style, an extra unnecessary
string just gets in the way.
Yeah, I agree. If I had a roadie who tuned and prepared all of my guitars for me while I did the rockstar thing, I'd probably do the same thing.
I thought Keith Richards did them in D not G.....
Many songs in D, E and G.
