Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at a request made by you all with Simply Red's "Holding Back the Years." Great soul to his voice, nice smooth instrumentation, deep lyrical content, with a few nice surprises. See my full reaction to this light but steller song.

He's so, so good. He sounds the same way he did when he was 17 yrs old. Such a meaning full track and heartfelt to the core. I salute you Mr. Hucknall. Your one of the greatest ever!!

Overall the album "Picture Book" from where this track comes is a very strong debut album.. Something new had arrived for sure..
You must see this guy, Mick Hucknall live. You will be transformed. He is amazing. There are a few of his concerts on You Tube. He is just as perfect live as he is in his videos.
You should hear him sing this live. He still sounds exactly the same even today!

When this came out he appeared on Top of the Pops without the band, just mick and his piano, he sang this live which was rare as everybody then chose to mime.
@gigi v 70’s it was they had to make a different backing track to the studio version,thats why many appeared to be live but were not

YEP!!! THAT VOICE!!! Check out Simply Red's live concerts especially 1992 LIVE!!! This song is about his Mom leaving he & his dad when Mick was 3. He waited for her to come back but she never did. Actually check out ANY of the live concerts - I guarantee you will ENJOY! He was strongly influenced by Motown and Bobby Bland also. That ONE-OF-A KIND FANTASTIC VOICE!!! Known as Blue-eyed Soul Singer.
He was 17 when he wrote this song. It's about his parents (Pater - dad, Mater - mom) and his childhood. His mom left when he was 3yo and never returned.

That’s Whitby and Goathland Railway Station in the video! Such a quaint area, and Mick’s voice is timeless! This whole album, Picture Book, is a masterpiece of Blue-Eyed Soul, give the whole thing a listen!

I have been lucky enough to see Simply Red live a couple of times,the 1st time M-People were the warm up band,before coming famous in their own right. The 2nd time,as Mick Hucknall is a Manchester United fan,they were playing a match,(soccer),the same night,he kept us all waiting,as he was watching the match lol.

Its amazing the singer wrote this song at 17 yrs old.
Simply Red we’re formed this very year (‘85) by lead singer Mick Hucknall and were together until 2010 when they disbanded until reforming in 2015 and they’re about to tour in Summer ‘23. They’ve also done sone really great covers that were huge for them: If You Don’t Know Me By Now (which was really big for them) and from their 2003 album Home: You Make Me Feel Brand New. In fact check out their live performance of You Make Me Feel Brand New in Sydney, Australia from 2009, it is stunning!! 😊

In 1982, the band were confident in the ability of the song Holding Back the Years, which was recorded at Hologram Studios in Stockport. Despite no longer having the backing of any company, the band decided to finance and release it themselves. Lack of decent distribution, saw the single go largely unheard.

"If You Don't Know Me By Now" - vocal showcase. He's a remarkable vocalist.
And its a trumpet with a mute on it. Those high notes are hard to hit cuz I've played and still can play one. It really adds a presence to a song that's already amazing!!

Mick Hucknall (of Simply Red), Michael McDonald (of the Doobie Brothers), Kenny Loggins, and Michael Bolton were burning up the airwaves back in the day. These white boys are dangerously talented and can sang! They fall into that "Blue Eyed Soul" genre.

And Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates) also has a soulful voice.
I hate to be the one nitpicky bastard, but I can't sit here and hear you say that the song is deep, and then call it "simplistic". You mean "simple".
The story in the video is he was in an abusive home as a kid. He is just now leaving the town as an adult, probably because he kept holding on the memory of his hard childhood. The lady is his teacher that he remember seeing with his father or somebody she shouldn't have been caught with.

This was an interesting time in music for me. A few years later I became a huge rock, alternative and rock listener, but in that time I listened to funk, soul and synthi-pop very much (and still do of course). I had the chance to listen to this song very early when it came out as a single cause I listened to an UK radio show that only put out soul music ("soul train on bfbs" - a radio station for uk soldiers I listend to as a german teenager). It was on my favourite cassette back then (yeah - people had walkmen with cassettes in that time period and bought real vinyl singles and LPs ;) ).
When I recognized it correctly you seem to like 80s vibes very much. A song I still dont see listened to at all on youtube also from 85 is by an italian pop group called "Matia Bazar" and the name "ti sento". I recommend it to check it out. Great voice and great synthi sounds. You should listen to the studio version - not a live version, cause the synthi sound is best in the studio version. There are several TV-shows they performed in to the studio-version so did not a real live gig. Like this:

I am seeing simply red in October this year and this will be my 5th time seeing them live. I think you need to listen to your babies which is another classic track by simple red.

This is fairly different sounding from the album version, which is much better. Stuff is cut out of this version to make the song shorter for radio, and some instruments are different. Tempo sounds a little faster too. Look up the original album version.

Hi Dereck! I'm French and I like this english group like Tears For Fears too. This song is great but the same year another song more catchy is " Money Too Tight (To mention)" which is apparently a cover of The Valentine Brothers in 1982, I only know it through Simpy Red.
In 1989, for their come back, my favorite is "A New Flame" (this 3rd album became NO.1 everywhere: a huge worldwide success) , I like this song very catchy and Mike Hucknall's voice transports me, it makes you want to sing even if at the time, I didn't know a word of english! It would be good that you react on this song.
The same year I know that the SMASH HIT is " If You Don'T Know Me By Now" (again a COVER!), a big success, # 1 in sales in several countries even is US.
In france, this song has worked well, it was a SUMMER HIT,a slow, looping on the radio and in many compilations. I have a HITS 88-89 compilation in cassette and this song is there.
