I’m 63 and forgot what a great song this was. Glad to hear again. This is going on my play list. Just so relaxing and makes you think about the years that have passed.😕
THAT VOICE!!! came out in 1986. Check out his other vids on YT. This song is about his mom leaving him & his Dad when Mick was 3. He always hoped she'd be back but she never did! He was devastated! Did I mention THAT VOICE!!! :D He was 26 then, But he STill sounds the same today at 60!
I remember when everyone thought he was a POC because he sung slot of soul songs. He also covered "if you don't know me by now" and it was beautifully done😁
This song was released in 1985. It is on Simply Red's debut studio album Picture Book. I always knew SR was a group, but for several years I thought the singer was a middle-aged black female. Lol. But if you think about it, Mick Hucknall has kind of a Billie Holiday tone to his voice. But anyway, what a fantastic song by a great group. And it's not just the singing, the musicianship is awesome too!
One of my fave songs of all time, Mitch Hucknall (lead singer) is so good! He started writing this song when he was only 17, it was about missing his mom, who left when he was very young. I believe it was released in the 1980s if I recall correctly because I was in my 20s then and wore that album out!
That song has always held a deep place in my heart. It was the perfect "broken Heart" song for me when it came out because that's what was happening in my life. But, to this day, I had not seen the video. Now I know that this song -- I KNOW it -- was written for me. Wow. That hit home...again.
Have you heard another of his amazing song called " SUNRISE" sampled from Hall and Oats " I can't go for that" both so amazing please check them both out!!! ❤️❤️❤️🎶🎶🎶 Looking forward to your reaction!
If the Righteous Brothers gave rise to the term "Blue Eyed Soul," Simply Red was one of the '80s disciples of it. "Holding Back the Years" was a #1 hit record here in the US in 1985. They had one other #1 hit in America, four years later in '89: "If You Don't Know Me By Now," a cover of the song first made famous in the US by Philly soul group Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes back in the early '70s.
@@andreaschmall5560 -- Well, you're not going to get an argument out of me. Teddy Pendergrass was a very special kind of once-in-a-lifetime voice. What a shame that we lost him so soon. No telling the body of work he'd have amassed if the fates had dealt him a longer life.
The story in the video is he was in an abusive home as a kid. He is just now leaving the town as an adult, probably because he kept holding on the memory of his hard childhood. The lady is his teacher that he remember seeing with his father or somebody she shouldn't have been caught with.
THE song of the mid 1980ies! In Europe at least. And a song for eternity, don't ya think so? I do. Mick's hair is simply red, and his voice is simply unique, isn't it!?
You should check out Simply Red's version of the Stylistics song, "You Make Me Feel Brand New"! You should check out the Stylistics version as well from the 1970s!
Mick Hucknall (of Simply Red) is a "Soul Man". He is "Blue Eyed Soul" like Michael McDonald (of the Doobie Brothers), Kenny Loggins, Michael Bolton and Bobby Caldwell. All these white dudes are dangerously talented and can sang! Blue Eyed Soul. They were all burning up the airwaves back in the day.
💛💚🖤💜🤎💙🤍🖤 Since you love a great vocalist, check out Annie Lennox/The Eurythmics, best vocals she ever did. Triple tracked vocals. The song is No Fear No Hate No Pain No Broken Hearts. There is a fan made video; been on youtube for years, won't get blocked. It has a doll with orange hair. Glorious vocals. She has sold 80 million albums, between her career in the Eurythmics and the solo albums.
That trumpet just took me to a thought...you HAVE to listen to "Cantaloop" by US3...it's a jazz & hip-hop combo and it is out of the world! Do yourself a favor and check it out! I loved your reaction, that was a beautifully done song! Stay well my friend :)
HazeBruv Mick Hucknall's mother left when he was 4, he thought one day she'd be back but it never happened. I wonder if she ever heard this and did she care.

Simply Red......simply brilliant....
Mick Hucknall is a tremendous vocalist.
What a beautiful and haunting song the 80s a great decade for music❤❤

This song was released in 1985. They have another song called Sunrise that samples Hall and Oates I Can't Go For That!
Great song! Never gets old ..because we’re all holding back the years.

No comparison between the two. Teddy Pendergrass was a tough act to follow as far as singing was concerned.
