The C64 Mini was backed on Kickstarter and released within the last couple of months. Pre-loaded with 64 Classic C64 Games; the C64 Mini plugs straight in to your TV via USB and HDMI support. With classics like Boulder Dash and California Games how could you go wrong? Well you can! Here is my C64 Mini Review

You should have played the console - It's not rewiev but unboxing in my mind - also old games a suppsed to be played on ctr monitors since its obvious the graphics looke better on those and devlopers wasn't stupid enought to not take that in consideration -every pixel*counted in the right place then.

Ooh. What games ought to be on there? My initial list would be: Pirates, Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken, Airborne Ranger, Giana Sisters, Grand Prix Circuit, Archon, Turrican 2, Defender of the Crown, X-Out, Ultima IV, Last Ninja, Rambo 2, Turbo Outrun, Outrun Europe, IK+, Stunt Car Racer, Master of Magic, Power Drift, Bad Street Brawler, Laser Squad, Target Renegade, Samurai Warrior, the recently ported Prince of Persia..
I also wish they'd bring back a couple of other joystick models like the TAC-2, the ZipStick, The Bug and my favorite of them all: The Arcade. And maybe the one of them QuickShots or the Bart Simpson joystick just for the laughs :)

Great video! Back in the day I started my first gaming steps on my C64. So when I heard about this mini I was very excited. But after seeing several video I was like 'meh'... :) Perhaps some bigger version would be more interesting. And now I'm a bit (a lot) spoiled with my retropie.. :)

Awesome! C64 was my first system. Wizball and some others still hold up today, but I would only revisit them if I had my old machine and games. I don't think it was the best time in gaming or anything. And thanks so much for bringing back the legs 😍

The stick is something that I wondered about, back in the day I used the Zipstick on the C64, I'm still struggling to find a decent USB stick for emulated C64 gaming. Great review.

Good honest review. I'm a Speccy fan more than the 64 too. Was interested in this as I used to play the 64 at my cousins back in day. Doesn't sound great atm, but hopefully the firmware will be more advanced later on.

Im old enough to fondly remember ZX Spectrum and typing the games in from computer mags. Ive seen some people modding keyboard cases for the Raspberry PI but i would love a C-64 keyboard with built in mini PC. I think that would be crazy popular.

I'm happy with my original C64c and the sd card disk drive. Still love to load tapes up though!
These days a joystick feels terrible though, so I use origional master system control pads which are great and 100% compatible with the C64.

Good review and i am a little disappointed with the actual package but might be better than i thought. One question though is the USB power cord and no AC adapter, the current required was not stated and long term use may require getting and adapter rather than using a PC USB connection. As mentioned the firmware needs improvement but was wondering about an implementation of C64 basic and if it was functional?

  • @10MARC
    @10MARC 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Almost every review complains about the keyboard not being functional, and the complains the price is too high... Adding a functional custom keyboard that size would raise the price a lot! I think this is a great idea - and we will finally be getting it in the USA this October! Pre-order for me

Scarabaeus is needed. Is there a CRT filter to make the games look like they did in the 80's on old CRT TVs'? HDMI and HD TV's can make things too defined (sharp blocks).

In many ways this is better than an original C64 setup, HDMI, no disks or drives needed, low power consumption, works perfect with any USB keyboard, can use a USB mouse, and takes up much less room.

Good video but needs an update. Do Bluetooth dongles work for keyboards? Is it hardware or emulation? Etc. Joystick is not a Commodore joystick as in the day as that one was white and more like an atari2600 in design. But overall a good enjoyable vid.

Robert Elliott retropie 3, 32 or 64 gb sd card micro and a case which u like. a power adapter with micro usb connector... do u have an usb keyboard and mouse ( wireless ).. these are the things u need to have. then look for a image or iso file for retropie or recalbox... some of them have everything installed already...

Thirty three percent off with free shipping! ($39.99) From Ontario, Canada. Gonna get it. Can use your own rom files also and I have the entire collection. Load them from thumb drive. I grew up on this rig. And the Atari 2600, Colecovision, Telstar, etc. So many hundreds of hours playing the classics. Like the Ultima series, Might & Magic, Below The Root, and so on. Stoked about it. About to buy it. Can't go wrong for that price.

Really easy to add extra software... If you use D64 (Disk image) you can add maybe 5 or so games, if you use D71 (Disk image) you can add more.. the best (Disk image) to use is a D81, 20+ games "Depending on block size of each software title" Multi disk games use a D81 or D71 add all PRG files to that one disk..
As for keyboard functions you can use a USB keyboard..
To load extra games of USB stick go into BASIC type LOAD"$",8 hit RETURN, type LIST, then type LOAD"game title",8 hit RETURN, when loaded type RUN then hit RETURN..
Or use software like FIBR or FB64 (these are actual C64 file browsers) to select individual disks and PRG files.. If you want to load the first file on USB stick type LOAD"*",8 then hit RETURN type RUN.. I could go in to so much detail about the C64 Mini "and I don't or never have ever used one" I have helped loads of Mini users with this Information... Honestly its easy to use... It is the same as a real Commodore 64 using BASIC (And yes I am a Commodore 64 user) Real hardware.

I think they would have been better off by have full sized usable C64 keys on the machine, but fewer of them. For psuedo keyboard controls. Other than that, and a UI overhaul, it would have been much better value.

The loading system for running any other C64 titles isn't that bad. The main point to add would be that it works. The major negative is that you can only
load one title per USB stick. This is apparently going to be expanded via a firmware update at a later date. The unit will require you to have a USB hub
handy(a passive should be fine but you might like to experiment with passive and active.) due to having only 2 USB ports. Being able to connect straight to a TV without loading up a PC etc is the real draw card here. The price is excellent for what you get. The joystick would be worth about 20GBP alone so the remainder of that price is pretty darn good for a micro PC(about the same price as a raspberry Pi and that wouldn't come with a groovy retro C64 joystick.) There's probably no reason why you couldn't try other USB joysticks with this unit and overall for it's price point no complaints. Your comments about the virtual user keyboard can be negated by trying the unit with a keyboard plugged in. Like the ZX Spectrum, the C64 also had Elite, which would have made it an instant purchase for this fan. What would have completely sealed the deal would have been the 4 Ultima titles available for the computer, Load Runner, Big Trouble In Little China and the Buckaroo Banzai adventure game. As for the most popular titles for the unit being included well that's a subject of much debate and in all honesty I'd never heard of half the titles here. Thumbs up for mentioning 'Speedball' that's a legendary game. Still great to see a nice retro style version that will no doubt not overheat like the original is prone to come onto the market. Now if only someone would release an Amiga 500 clone that can load games like this then the retro gaming revolution complete with utter bliss can begin. :)

It's a simple test for someone who owned a 1983 C64 from release date to Amiga 1000 PAL release date. Is Uridium running super smooth and fast with zero lag and is that joystick up to the quality of a 1980s Zipstick arcade quality joystick with standard Atari joystick ports. I doubt it is so even if it didn't have that silly fake keyboard and the stupid mini size case making it impossible to have a C64 style keyboard then it wouldn't matter anyway. I chose not to invest my money in something with such a poor qualitybespoke joystick and idiotic design decision of small case/fake keyboard myself.

these mini things are really for people like me who wouldn't be mithered to set up retro systems with modern equipment. you're essentially paying a premium for your own laziness / ineptitude / both. i wouldnt get the c64 mini as although we had a c64 in my house growing up, i was never a massive fan. but an amiga or snes mini would be of more interest to me. the game i played a lot on the c64 was who dares wins 2, not sure if that's on this machine or not.

Nothing you can't get for free on pretty much any hardware released in the last 2 (almost 3) decades.

No keyboard, no removable media is a big problem. The worst part about emulating a C64 is that the C64 keyboard does not match PC keyboards at all. It's a computer (that has good games) not a console.
The joystick is based off the Competition Pro not off of any Commodore product. Where I am the the Wico controllers where the popular premier sticks, with he Quickshot II being common cheaper option.

Hi Gemma, I am on old crock that goes back to when the C64 was the epitome of a gaming platform. Was interested in this, having never invested in these mini classics. Heard the Sega minis are run by AtGames, also criticised for not being up to scratch. And have heard the same criticisms about the C64 mini, you have voiced here. I believe the same company wants to do a full size version, with an active keyboard. My favourites of these C64 games are Paradroid and Uridium. These got upgraded onto the Commodore Amiga. Oh yes. How about an Amiga Mini, now that I would buy!

I just heard about the Amiga X, Sega Megadrive mini and Neo Geo Mini cab as well, so this is really taking off.

Those sd2iec readers are decent and even better when you add an epyx fastload cart, definitely the way to go

When she said "have the maturity" the need to troll intensified xD . Seems like a no brainer. Worst mini to come out. Never grew up with the C64 . C64 owners were elitists bet they still are. They gonna swear by it & believe it rivals anything else LOL. Good job you got it for free Gemma.

Typical "gamer girl" - she shows herself more than she shows the c64.
