After the NES, my Mom had bought a 4-5 years old Commodore 64/128 from an ad in the papers at the time. With a box full of disks and booklets. She knew nothing of the treasure she had gotten us, she just knew I liked these things!
I strongly recommend the C64 game Law of the West. You play a sherrif in a wild west town and have to keep the peace. You can talk your way through most confrontations but can unholster and fire your gun however you see fit. It's a fun little sandbox of morals and wits. Easy to learn and very immersive.
I got the Famicom keyboard when it was on sale, and honestly. It's an absolute joy to type on. Thanks for the video techdweeb! You're a charm on this platform ^^

Jumpman was a great game! I didn’t play that one specifically until a couple decades later on emulation but “Jumpman Jr “ was one of my favorites in my c64 library back in the 80s played it to death.
Amazing that you've done this video! Thank you. IMO you've now reached the demi-god tier of YT content creators. You'll reach full god-tier if you teach me the best way to emulate the Ti99/4A, my childhood home computer. You'll be above Zeus and Odin if you can show how to play the Ti99's awesome Parsec game on the Steam Deck. Cheers.
You have to check out two games I obsessed over: Karateka and Impossible Mission, I have the line "Another visitor. Stay a while, stay forever!" burned into my memory for life.
Legacy of the Ancients is one of my favorite RPG's on it that's a bit short and Beyond the Forbidden Forest was a good popular game. The computer Lab at my Elementary School had a 1 hour class every week where they crammed us into a room with around 30 computers ranging from Apples, Atari, Commodores, TRS-80 and a few CP/M and DOS computers and forced us to play video games.15 minutes to do what ever you wanted then having to put everything away and switch to a different computer.
TechDweeb, you gotta play Jumpman. If you haven't. The nostalgia is big in this one. Love the channel.. I just forced my kids and their cousin to watch this video while I yelled out in nostalgia joy at some of these classics.
Of all the 8BitDo retro styled keyboards, this is the one that really does it for me. I would love to see it have the petscii labels on the bottom side of the key caps like the original, but I understand that would be difficult/expensive to do.
Man it's nice seeing the Commodore 64 get some love from emulation channels. I was born too late to get any childhood experience with it, but exploring the game library as an adult with TheC64 full-size and getting into amateur BASIC programming through that has always made me jealous of anyone who had access to a real one growing up.
Just picked up this keyboard this week. Was my first computer. Had a ton of fun waiting on disks to load, die quickly, and then wait for everything to load again. I played a lot of Wizards of Wor, Jumpman, Arachnophobia, Sammy Lightfoot and lots of 2600 ports.
Thanks for this fun video! Btw, how's the joystick that comes with the keyboard? You probably already know about some of the amazing homebrew games that have come out for the C64 in the last few years, but just in case you don't, here are a few highlights: Sam's Journey (platformer), Steel Ranger (run 'n gun), Briley Witch Chronicles (RPG), Caren and the Tangled Tentacles (graphic adventure), Planet X2.1 (RTS!), Lady-Pac (arcade), Wormhole (platforming / run 'n gun). Cheers.
As a 56 year old I played the original C64. This brought back soo many happy memories. I definitely recommend playing Ghostbusters Batman Rainbow Island Keep up the good work ❤
Fun fact, thanks to the C64, the first word I learned to spell is Load. Some of my favorites include boulderdash, impossible mission, and great giana sisters (though when I played it, it had a mario sprite swap, hahaha)
Barbarian was on of my favorites back in the day. Slicing heads off never felt so good before or since. Ultima 2 and 3 was one of the first RPGs that I finished multiple times. Great pulls TD. Any game from the Jumpman series is a great play on C64. There are like 3 or 4 of them.
Friday the 13th and Project Firestart are synonymous with the c64 for me, along with California games, Summer Games, and Winter Games. Oh, and Championship Wrestling. My gosh, the memories.
I still own my 64, also a 128. I have a few 5 1/4" drives and the illusive 3.5" drive as well...! Haven't dragged either of them out of the hall closet in a few years....that'll change today 😊 Thanks for the reminder, these were the best of their generation with their SID chips, 16 colors (!!), and it's compact nature---they blew it all away back in the day! I actually miss typing in some of my games (yes, you actually programmed, what a concept!!). Great video, I might nab that keyboard, I like the design. I retro play all of the great games that this platform gave us (Ultima FTW!!), and they are decently set up. Absolutely great video Mr. Dweeb, it's so awesome to remember where we came from ❤
Same here. I let go of my 128D years ago and regret it. However, my C64 is hooked up to a 1702 monitor w/drives. When I'm working during the day, I'll let Little Computer People run on it across the room. The little dude in the house still eats like a horse. It's something to think this little game inspired games like The Sims. Pick up the keyboard in this video. You'll be amazed at how authentic it feels to the original as the keys have those dips your fingers will sink into. I liked it so much, I use it as my daily driver. Cheers!
So I've done a lot of troubleshooting and trial and error. I mapped my retropad binds to my Gamesir G8+ rather than having it default to it, cleared all hotkeys, and have come to the conclusion that no matter what, In Quick Menu - Controls - whatever "LEFT" is bound/assigned to whether it's Up or R1 or any button, it pauses the game. No matter what. So when you launch, say Turrican, it will pause as soon as you press left and the only button that will UnPause it, is FIRE. 1. Is this recreatable for anyone else? Surprisingly, ON PORT 2 CONTROLS in Quick Menu - Controls with Device Type left on RETRO PAD, I can assign the actual DPAD/HAT LEFT to R or anything else, and it allows me to play and left still works fine. But if the LEFT option on the list that pips up is assigned to ANYTHING, that button will pause the game. PORT 1 CONTROLS stay how they are. With D pad mapped as it should be and device type left as RETRO PAD. Confirmed now that changing to JOYSTICK changes nothing for either PORT 1 or 2 2. Does this track for anyone else? I can not figure out what this is. I think it's some kind of mix-up between Port 1 and Port 2 controls getting crossed, maybe? There's not much online besides a post about checking a log file bit I can't find Input = Pause to delete in the script lines. How can this be fixed?? From what I have gathered, there is some kind of correlation between PORT 1 & PORT 2 but the Controls for port 2 just need to be changed from DPAD LEFT (and sometimes DOWN on some games like UFO) to any other binding, and that in turn makes the binds in PORT 1 work as they should.
I got given a Commodore 64 for helping some friends move house and although it wasn't working, I was able to get it fixed. No disk drive but it did come with the cassette player, a Quickshot joystick and some games on cassette. Uridium, Ye Ar Kung Fu, Impossible Mission, Paradroid and Suicide Express were on the cassettes. It stopped working again after about 6 months so when I took it back to get repaired, the techie was selling Amiga 500s so I traded it in for one and bought the OG Civilization and X-Com Enemy Unknown. Good times.
Creatures, published by Thalamus, is probably the best C64 game ever. It plays like an 8-bit version of Cuphead in that the run and gun stages are devilishly difficult but the boss levels are rewarding enough to keep you coming back for more. The soundtrack is second to none. Creatures 2 is good also, with more of a focus on the torture boss levels.
If you want some INSANELY retro feeling switches for that board, that sound and feel amazing, grab some "gateron mini i" switches for it. They're tactile switches with a deeeeep thock and the way they did the tactile bump right at the top makes them feel crazy retro. I just made a keyboard for my friend and used them... now i need a set for myself.
Geoff Crammond who made Stunt Car Racer is one of the absolute legends of game creation history. He created Revs, then Stunt Car Racer, then Formula One Grand Prix and its sequels which were truly mindblowing and revolutionary sim racing games. As a massive F1 fan, when I finally got F1GP on my Olivetti 286 in 1992 it was just sensational. Pit stops, tyre degredation, aerodynamic effects, oversteer and understeer, rain, realistic AI... Just unbelievable stuff.
That also makes me think the c64 successor, the Amiga, was an incredible system for gaming. That F1GP game was first released on the Amiga and the Atari ST (1991). Maybe Tech Dweeb will take a look at those two systems some time ;).

The physics of Stunt Car Racer on C64 is actually nuts. If you watch a video where it runs on the SuperCPU it becomes even more obvious how great it is. I think I read somewhere that it's a direct port port of the engine running in the Amiga version, which still sounds insane to me if it's true. Back then I turned a cracked joystick and a car dashboard style toy into a wheel controller of sort to b be usable with this game on the C64 :)
StuntCar Racer was genuinely ahead of it's time. Someone recently created a SuperCPU version of it that upped the framerate to make it even more enjoyable!
My dad was a big computer geek/enthusiast. He had a Tandy 1000 but gave it to me after he got a Commodore 64. He got it mostly for being a family computer to do family things (banking, mail, etc.) but the Commodore 64 wasn't good for that. Well, he said that, I couldn't tell you. So the Tandy 1000 with its dual 5 1/2 floppies was my first PC. My dad got rid of the C64, never got back into PCs until much later when Pentium 4's and Windows XP were the thing.
I had a C64! There was a fun 2d adventure puzzle game where you play an astronaut on a world full of aliens and their underground lair. I cant remember the name, tho. Anyone know that one?
I grew up on the C64. Personal favorites include: Raid on Bungeling Bay: a surprisingly deep top-down helicopter action game. There’s an interesting story about how it inspired the Sim City franchise. I think you’ll love it, Mr Dweeb Wasteland - an absolute classic, basically became Fallout due to IP issues and of course is the granddaddy of the new Wasteland games Impossible Mission 1 and 2 - maybe the biggest action adventure games for the platform at the time? At least in my house Pitstop 2 - another deceptively deep action game with a pitstop mini game that’s really the most interesting part of it Nemesis the Warlock - based on a British comic book, this one gave me nightmares as a kid. Action platformer with a really satisfying sword swinging animation. Amazing opening music by Rob Hubbard Skate or Die - Speaking of Rob Hubbard. This is actually like 5 skating games in one California Games - great set of mini games here too Raid Over Moscow - really difficult sci fi game. I couldn’t even get out of the hangar as a kid but I was fascinated with it The Last Ninja - action adventure with outstanding music
I think my favorite C64 game is Sam's Journey. It's out for NES/Famicom as well Digital or Physical. I will be ordering Piopow for NES this month before it's to late and they are all gone from Limited Run.
Lode runner, street rod, racing destuction set, buggy boy, beach head, ikari warriores, sspy hunter, rambo, power drift, choplifter, archon, uridium, wonder boy, wonderboy in modterland, sim city, roadwars 2000,raid over moscow, operation wolf, great giana sisters,r-type,wizard of war, and so many more. That was the best time of my life getting "backups" copies of games from my friends. Thx for the memeries and have a great day :)
Had a c64 growing up, favourite game... Giana sisters! To the point I have an Android version on my phone since... Forever! Really not fun to play with on screen controls, but it must stay there, I don't even know why... And my c64 copy on cassette I had obtained it through... Duplication of my friend's original using one of those double deck cassette players that were meant to copy audio tapes, did a lot of this back then....... Seems like 2 centuries old tech now, and still love the memories I have of it
Ah jeez, I'm older than TechDweeb. 👴 C64 games, you say?! How about Space Taxi, G.I. Joe, Spy vs. Spy, Impossible Mission, Cave of the Word Wizard, Ghostbusters, Zulu, Caverns of Khafka, Alice in Wonderland, Zaxxon, B.C. Quest for Tires, Congo Bongo, Lazy Jones. That'll keep ya busy!
I remember a game named "beyond the ice palace" I also remember that it was to hard for my taste back then, but it looked and played great after it was loaded up from cassette tapes. Do you remember cassette tapes for the c64 that was even more archaic than floppys but it did work. Crazy to think that back in the day you waited for a game to be loaded from a cassette and nowadays some complain that it takes a few milliseconds longer to boot a game from the sd card in your steam deck compared to the ssd 😂
I'll try Beyond the Ice Palace, looks great! And good point about the things we complain about. My buddy has a real old DOS PC, and I was like "let's boot it up and check out some games!", and my main takeaway was "dang that's a lot of waiting" :P
The C64 was my third computer, eventually to only be surpassed by the amazing Amiga 1000. My mother gave it away and I still have trauma! Some great games, Impossible Mission, Wasteland (precursor of Fallout), Elite, Defender of the Crown, Gunship, Traveler, Supremacy, Silent Service, Autoduel, Uridum... ...just too, too many!
I can really recommend Sam's Journey. It's a modern C64 game on disk or cartridge - it's still for sale I think. I also bought it for my Famicom toploader. The music, graphics and gameplay are awesome!
Played Wasteland on C64 , a great under rated RPG. Fallout way before it was even a thing. Glad they brought it back & are making a new version. Helps that fallout is currently so popular.
Waiting patiently for the Commodore 64 Hidden Gems video...checking my inbox, shucks, still not there...waiting longer. My first PC experience was an IBM PC clone that my step-dad owned. None of the games on the system were as graphical as the Commodore, but I loved playing many of the text-based adventures I found on the system. I can't remember the name of the game, but I laughed my butt off when I learned I could kill the King's ghost by throwing the candle stick at him. To this day I keep a candle stick by my side in case I ever find a real-live ghost to test this theory.
I'll play C64 on my Zazzbitty at some point... After I finish Final Fantasy 6 for the first time... and snap out of my awe of it... ANYWAY please do continue, I'll be paying attention.
I was an avid C64 owner and user from 1984 until,. well I am stil owning (more than one) them and using them. I would suggest the following games: Wizball (stick with it, its an amazing game), Uridium, Paradroid, Creatures, Last Ninja ( 2,3), Commando, Platoon, and Pirates. I spent too many hours in the 80's during my early to late teenage years addicted to so many games during the 80's on this machine, and in the U.K. it was rare to have a C64 as most of the kids had a ZX Spectrum.
usagi yojimbo, international karate +, microprose soccer, wizard of wor, boulder dash, myth, power drift, rick dangerous, friday the 13th, emilyn hughes soccer, giana sisters, terry's big adventure, barbarian.. so much great games.. great musics too..
Can someone tell me what mouse would fit be best? The Logitech Pebble in Colour Sand ist impossible to find. Another question: The white switches are REALLY loud, maybe other switches would fit more to the C64 feeling? Any experience here? Thank you
I need Techdweeb Merch❤️ Stickers,Keychains,Shirts..you name it. Respect to Taki and Russ but you, TD, are and will always be my favorite Retro Tech Dweeb just because of your absolute uniqueness. They should hire you as a voice actor imo. And one more thing: This man has beautiful hands. There I said it. Sounds like a love letter and it kinda is. A respectful and platonic love letter. I held this back bc I didnt want to sound creepy or too oversharing my thoughts but now I don't care anymore since I know that my mom has cancer and goes through chemo. It changed me drastically. So if anyone took time to read this: Have a wonderful day and hug the ones you love, buy them flowers amd sweets and take care of your moms horses in RDR2. Tell them you love them my fellow Dweebies. Love you❤️
If only the keyboard had the keycaps of the C64C, but still kept the same colors of the C64... the C64C had less sharp corners, which made typing much more comfortable.
I really, really like the C64's SID chip. Great music on that thing, all curated nicely in the High Voltage SID Collection. I particularly like songs by Goto80. About the keyboard though, the keycaps are available in several colors. They're called "AF SA" profile keycaps, and this particular brand is recognizable by the font and the way the period is misaligned on the "> ." key. They're a clone of the MG Monster / MG Ember premium sets, but IMO they're better than the original, while also being a fraction of the price.
Power drift was truly fun. I played it for hours. Mr. Angry was one of my favourites back then even though the premise of the 'compromising position' went over my head at the time. You were one of the paparazzi (I think) trying to get a photo of a page 3/glamour model in the aforementioned compromising position in a hotel, but for some reason your camera was in pieces and distributed across various rooms in the hotel and you had to find all of the pieces before you could take the photo. In one of those rooms, however was Mr. Angry who would chase throughout the hotel if you happened across him. It was really fun. I can't for the life of me remember how the developer increased the difficulty from level to level however, more hotel rooms perhaps. Maybe you could tell me 😅 Another one I remember for it's difficulty over anything else was snokkie (i think) a platformer where you played the titular character who was a penguin. Creatures too, I have a vague recollection of. I remember it being very bloody when one of your creatures died 😂

Just remembered one of my gaming WOW moments was on Creatures. You could hear the waterfall before it was on the screen, next gen stuff!
Impossible Mission!
The Bubble Bobble theme for me is the instant nostalgia trip.
I have limited C64 experience but I see a Dweeb upload, I'm there

Of all the 8BitDo retro styled keyboards, this is the one that really does it for me. I would love to see it have the petscii labels on the bottom side of the key caps like the original, but I understand that would be difficult/expensive to do.
Gateway To Apshai, Wizball, Forbidden Forest, Raid Over Moscow and Archon are some of my recommendations.
Fist 2 is magical, also Zak Mckracken and the alien mindbenders.
hi tech dweeb, huge fan of your work
- with love from my server room!
Thanks buddy!
Bubble bobble crew where you at?
Mine is one the way! Thanks for the reviews!
Wizards of Wor looks right up my alley!
Lol I was playing on my C64 when you were in diapers.
Ooooh!!! ❤❤ Love this RetroGaming stuff. I might need to get this keyboard!!!
I definitely recommend playing
Ghostbusters
Batman
Rainbow Island
Keep up the good work ❤
River raid also a good one!
Montezuma's Revenge
Heck yeah!!
my favorite. pitfall on the 2600 was my first game ever
Fun fact, thanks to the C64, the first word I learned to spell is Load.
Some of my favorites include boulderdash, impossible mission, and great giana sisters (though when I played it, it had a mario sprite swap, hahaha)
Press play on tape?
If there was a Rock n Roll Hall of fame for Computer/Console music the Commodore64 would definitely be in there 🤘🏼
Barbarian was on of my favorites back in the day.
@1:12 Nice Austin Powers reference!
A classic!
@@TechDweeb Yeah baby!
I have the Famicom version.
I like the clickiness and the color scheme.
Don't forget SAM which was probably the very first software only voice synthesizer on the C64.
Cool!
I don't have any sentimental attachment to the C64 but I want that keyboard.
Cheers!
I was an Amstrad CPC464 kid, but enough friends with C64's for it have fond place in the nostalgia berries. Thanks.
Confirmed now that changing to JOYSTICK changes nothing for either PORT 1 or 2
'Nintendo NES' = Nintendo Nintendo Entertainment System
1982, my freshman year of high school. My first computer was an Atari 800 followed by a Commodore 64.
I wish those super buttons were rotator knobs that you could map to your video editing and/or art software.
I had a C64! There was a fun 2d adventure puzzle game where you play an astronaut on a world full of aliens and their underground lair. I cant remember the name, tho. Anyone know that one?
I grew up on the C64. Personal favorites include:
Raid on Bungeling Bay: a surprisingly deep top-down helicopter action game. There’s an interesting story about how it inspired the Sim City franchise. I think you’ll love it, Mr Dweeb
Wasteland - an absolute classic, basically became Fallout due to IP issues and of course is the granddaddy of the new Wasteland games
Impossible Mission 1 and 2 - maybe the biggest action adventure games for the platform at the time? At least in my house
Pitstop 2 - another deceptively deep action game with a pitstop mini game that’s really the most interesting part of it
Nemesis the Warlock - based on a British comic book, this one gave me nightmares as a kid. Action platformer with a really satisfying sword swinging animation. Amazing opening music by Rob Hubbard
Skate or Die - Speaking of Rob Hubbard. This is actually like 5 skating games in one
California Games - great set of mini games here too
Raid Over Moscow - really difficult sci fi game. I couldn’t even get out of the hangar as a kid but I was fascinated with it
The Last Ninja - action adventure with outstanding music
Cool Giana Sister I played that on our amiga 500 it was great as we never had any nes or snes when I was growing up.
I think my favorite C64 game is Sam's Journey. It's out for NES/Famicom as well Digital or Physical. I will be ordering Piopow for NES this month before it's to late and they are all gone from Limited Run.
Dear Dweeeeeeeeeeeeeb, do you know a cheap USB alternative for those old Competition PRO joysticks? I haven't found USB joysticks in that style.
That *Dweeb* has his work cut out for him.
Seems like 2 centuries old tech now, and still love the memories I have of it
Oof I was born in ‘84. The Commodore 64 was my first personal computer experience. Bruce Lee, MULE, and Gateway to Apshai were my favorites.
Ah jeez, I'm older than TechDweeb. 👴
C64 games, you say?!
Winter games was one of my first c64 game i played back in the days..
So many games to suggest: Turrican, Defender of the Crown, Elite... I still have the C64 it in my parents' garage.
Great Giana Sisters on Amiga 500. Core memory right there. Next to Emerald Mine and Galaga.
😂😂 the friends mom bit hit close to home… ❤
I absolutely love keeping up with commodore 64 🎉
I want the 8 bit do NES keyboard. They're awesome looking
You're killing it
I'll play C64 on my Zazzbitty at some point... After I finish Final Fantasy 6 for the first time... and snap out of my awe of it...
ANYWAY please do continue, I'll be paying attention.
Nothin like waking up to someone screaming 'Commodore 64 emulation!'
A hand-me-down C64 was my first gaming console. I would sit for hours playing Space Taxi and Ghostbusters. More hidden gems videos!
Born in 1982 and 40 huh?
Me too, Pal... Me too...
I got my C64 8bitdo keyboard in the mail today so this video is perfect
usagi yojimbo, international karate +, microprose soccer, wizard of wor, boulder dash, myth, power drift, rick dangerous, friday the 13th, emilyn hughes soccer, giana sisters, terry's big adventure, barbarian.. so much great games.. great musics too..
So if anyone took time to read this:
Have a wonderful day and hug the ones you love, buy them flowers amd sweets and take care of your moms horses in RDR2. Tell them you love them my fellow Dweebies. Love you❤️
I remember playing Impossible Mission and a detective story on C64 growing up
If only the keyboard had the keycaps of the C64C, but still kept the same colors of the C64... the C64C had less sharp corners, which made typing much more comfortable.
Super Huey on the C64 was the 2nd flight sim I ever played and the first combat flight sim. 5 1/4 inch floppies = ouch. But man that soundtrack
Recommendation: "Galencia" is a relatively new (2017) aftermarket game that plays superb and looks impressive. Be sure to check it out on the C64! :)
Wow, you look like little Gage from the 1989 Pet Sematary movie in that photo of you as a toddler! :-D
I had two C64s. One I got for Christmas and one I won from an TV Invisionaries contest.
Mayhem In Monsterland
The last ‘AAA’ title for the C64
