After the NES, my Mom had bought a 4-5 years old Commodore 64/128 from an ad in the papers at the time. With a box full of disks and booklets. She knew nothing of the treasure she had gotten us, she just knew I liked these things!
That's an awesome story dude! Young Tech we would have been super jealous, I always wanted one of these things.
God bless your mom! So cool❤️ love
I have limited C64 experience but I see a Dweeb upload, I'm there
Come for the Dweeb, stay for the C64?
Dang, to me @TheIzzyNobreShow you're one of the OGs. Watched a healthy amount of your content, even bought the game you worked on way back when. 99 something, can't recall. Dude, I even occasionally watched your Portuguese stuff cause I love how the language sounds, just can't understand *beep* 🤣!
same 💯🥰👍🏼
I grew up on the C64. CJ Elephant Antics, absolutely amazing.
Just remembered one of my gaming WOW moments was on Creatures. You could hear the waterfall before it was on the screen, next gen stuff!
Impossible Mission!
The Bubble Bobble theme for me is the instant nostalgia trip.
If 8BitDo ever makes an Atari 8-bit style keyboard I'll buy it in a heartbeat.
YES!!!
I'd LOVE an Atari ST one, complete with those funky function keys...
@@TechDweeb
@@ButtonsNSticks yes!! while I like what they've done here, what I'd like to see is Atari keys, not just the style but the actual symbols and layout.
This so I can hook it up to an emulator/MiSTer and have keys match the original system, without having to remember/look up which modern key matches the Atari key I want to press.
Oh and I guess redundancy wouldn't hurt: there's many Atari keyboards, maybe have all of the keys of each even if they are duplicates between models (ie: help/start/select/option in the 400/800/XE and F keys in the ST, they could use the same keycodes)
I really want that strip of brushed metal keys in the 800 though, never saw anything like that ever again.
Nah we need a genuine ZX81 keyboard with the membranes and 5 modes per key!!!
I strongly recommend the C64 game Law of the West. You play a sherrif in a wild west town and have to keep the peace. You can talk your way through most confrontations but can unholster and fire your gun however you see fit. It's a fun little sandbox of morals and wits. Easy to learn and very immersive.
I'll try it!
Commodore 64 was my first computer. I loved every one of its 64 kilobytes 😢 played Great Giana Sisters like there was no tomorrow. Thanks Dweeb ❤
I remember having fun with _Fort Apocalypse_ back in the day. I haven't played it in decades, so I don't know how well it holds up now. It was also available on Atari Computer systems, but I played the C64 version.
Just got my 8bitdo keyboard today! Swapping switches for brown ones though. Badlands! Man I loved that game on the C64. In fact the C64 started it all for me, so much so it's the star of my sci-fi time travelling books!
Way of the exploding fist and race destruction set are both great C64 games
International Karate was better
The C64 was an amazing cRPG system, and not only Ultima - Bard's Tale I-III (and an actual construction kit to make your own version!), Phantasie I-III, Legacy of the Ancients; early gems like Telengard or Temple of Apshai. Almost all of the 80s classics were ported to C64. But, best of all, were the SSI Gold Box games like Pools of Radiance. SSI was kinda like the Avalon Hill of computer games at the time, making bizarrely complicated games with these highly limited computers.
I also remember games like Defender of the Crown, which blew me away with its graphics at the time. Seven Cities of Gold was a game I remember spending a lot of time in. The platformer of Conan was fun, if frustrating. There were weird simulation games like President Elect. The fact that folks are STILL making C64 games today is a testimonial to its widespread fanbase.
Thanks for the nostalgia, TechDweeb!
Edit: Reading other comments made me even more nostalgic for games I nearly forgotten from the whole Summer/Winter Games EA stuff to Usagi Yojimbo... I used to sail the high seas with me eyepatch back in the day, so I had a lot of games... a lot of long lost floppies... I used to run a BBS when I was 11-13ish.
Fist 2 is magical, also Zak Mckracken and the alien mindbenders.
Legacy of the Ancients is one of my favorite RPG's on it that's a bit short and Beyond the Forbidden Forest was a good popular game.
The computer Lab at my Elementary School had a 1 hour class every week where they crammed us into a room with around 30 computers ranging from Apples, Atari, Commodores, TRS-80 and a few CP/M and DOS computers and forced us to play video games.15 minutes to do what ever you wanted then having to put everything away and switch to a different computer.
Kaihl box whites are the ones I had on my keyboard for a longggg time before switching to pink linear switches. It's so fun to hear them click-clicking away. This was indeed such a cozy video. Thanks for sharing! Next up, ASMR TechDweeb doodling video. You said you'd do ANYTHING.
Now THAT request is something I can do!
Man it's nice seeing the Commodore 64 get some love from emulation channels. I was born too late to get any childhood experience with it, but exploring the game library as an adult with TheC64 full-size and getting into amateur BASIC programming through that has always made me jealous of anyone who had access to a real one growing up.
The keyboard looks awesome, they really nailed the look.
Great vid, man! I was also born in 82! The year of E.T. and Tron! Great year! I started out with the 2600, then NES, Gameboy, SNES, Gamegear and that was the end of my console days till I got a computer in 94, then installed my first 3d card, the CANADIAN Matrox Mystique 2mb in 96, never looked back. Except for a few years ago where Xbox One S had a sale and I just had to jump back in lol, for Forza 3 mainly lol.
Was never interested in the Commodore 64 but I am now!
As a 56 year old I played the original C64.
This brought back soo many happy memories.
I definitely recommend playing
Ghostbusters
Batman
Rainbow Island
Keep up the good work ❤
River raid also a good one!
Loved playing on my mates C64 as a kid, 2 of my favourite games were spy hunter and mission impossible.
My first computer and I have so many fond memories of playing games, even on my black & white portable tv. You mentioned some great ones and I used to also play a few sports games with my friends like Hyper Sports (which had great SID chariots of fire intro music), Summer Games II, Winter Games and Daley Thomson's Decathlon. I also had the joystick in the photo of the real c64 in your video. Can't remember what it was called but it was brilliant.
Gateway To Apshai, Wizball, Forbidden Forest, Raid Over Moscow and Archon are some of my recommendations.
I still own my 64, also a 128. I have a few 5 1/4" drives and the illusive 3.5" drive as well...! Haven't dragged either of them out of the hall closet in a few years....that'll change today 😊 Thanks for the reminder, these were the best of their generation with their SID chips, 16 colors (!!), and it's compact nature---they blew it all away back in the day! I actually miss typing in some of my games (yes, you actually programmed, what a concept!!). Great video, I might nab that keyboard, I like the design. I retro play all of the great games that this platform gave us (Ultima FTW!!), and they are decently set up. Absolutely great video Mr. Dweeb, it's so awesome to remember where we came from ❤
Another great video! Keep up the great work
Good morning TD! Oh man, that keyboard is tempting. Heck, I might even get one for my dad as a good/ nostalgic keyboard he can map stuff to. ....and keep the buttons for myself 😅
7:02 "Ohhh, Stifler's Mom"
Ooooh!!! ❤❤ Love this RetroGaming stuff. I might need to get this keyboard!!!
If there was a Rock n Roll Hall of fame for Computer/Console music the Commodore64 would definitely be in there 🤘🏼
Montezuma's Revenge
Heck yeah!!
my favorite. pitfall on the 2600 was my first game ever
TechDweeb, you gotta play Jumpman. If you haven't. The nostalgia is big in this one. Love the channel.. I just forced my kids and their cousin to watch this video while I yelled out in nostalgia joy at some of these classics.
And there was Jumpman Junior by Epyx
Of all the 8BitDo retro styled keyboards, this is the one that really does it for me. I would love to see it have the petscii labels on the bottom side of the key caps like the original, but I understand that would be difficult/expensive to do.
My families favorite was called jumpman. Also to note it was the only video game my mom ever played. In fact it was the only game she ever played. She didn't play card or board games but to this day she raves about the amazing game jumpman from the comadore 64. If memory serves me correctly there was Ana amazing game called firestorm or fire... something... basically blew my little mind when I saw it, one of the first concepts of homing rockets where you controlled the rocket... honestly from memory that was better than playing the game itself. Either way I thank you for the retro dopamine you have provided me this day. 😅
Jumpman was a great game! I didn’t play that one specifically until a couple decades later on emulation but “Jumpman Jr “ was one of my favorites in my c64 library back in the 80s played it to death.
I have an aunt like that! Literally the only game she every played on my cousin's Nintendo was Burger Time, and she played it ALL THE TIME!
Jumpman and Jumpman Junior are the two best games on any 8-bit machine ever made
@@TechDweebXCOM 2 is the only game I play on my Xbox
Jumpman was awesome.
Omg "YOU need to play Commodore 64 games!" is definitely my favourite video made by INSERT CHANNEL NAME HERE, much love xoxo
Used to love the C64, a friend had one, and I had the ZX spectrum so we would play different games at each others houses.
I loved my C64! Great memories
StuntCar Racer was genuinely ahead of it's time. Someone recently created a SuperCPU version of it that upped the framerate to make it even more enjoyable!
Amazing that you've done this video! Thank you. IMO you've now reached the demi-god tier of YT content creators. You'll reach full god-tier if you teach me the best way to emulate the Ti99/4A, my childhood home computer. You'll be above Zeus and Odin if you can show how to play the Ti99's awesome Parsec game on the Steam Deck. Cheers.
hi tech dweeb, huge fan of your work
- with love from my server room!
Thanks buddy!
✅ Low key Austin Powers reference
✅ Drinks root beer because it has bite, and won’t keep you up
✅ Nineteen Eighty Tworiffic
Barbarian was on of my favorites back in the day. Slicing heads off never felt so good before or since. Ultima 2 and 3 was one of the first RPGs that I finished multiple times. Great pulls TD. Any game from the Jumpman series is a great play on C64. There are like 3 or 4 of them.
Bubble bobble crew where you at?
Mine is one the way! Thanks for the reviews!
If you want some INSANELY retro feeling switches for that board, that sound and feel amazing, grab some "gateron mini i" switches for it. They're tactile switches with a deeeeep thock and the way they did the tactile bump right at the top makes them feel crazy retro. I just made a keyboard for my friend and used them... now i need a set for myself.
A few C64 games that I think you should try:
Battletech - A Crescent Hawk's Inception
BC II - Grog's Revenge
Demon Stalkers - The Raid on Doomfane
Druid
Elite
Hard Hat Mack
One Man and His Droid
Samurai Warrior - The Battles of Usagi Yojimbo
Shogun
I grew up on the C64. Personal favorites include:
Raid on Bungeling Bay: a surprisingly deep top-down helicopter action game. There’s an interesting story about how it inspired the Sim City franchise. I think you’ll love it, Mr Dweeb
Wasteland - an absolute classic, basically became Fallout due to IP issues and of course is the granddaddy of the new Wasteland games
Impossible Mission 1 and 2 - maybe the biggest action adventure games for the platform at the time? At least in my house
Pitstop 2 - another deceptively deep action game with a pitstop mini game that’s really the most interesting part of it
Nemesis the Warlock - based on a British comic book, this one gave me nightmares as a kid. Action platformer with a really satisfying sword swinging animation. Amazing opening music by Rob Hubbard
Skate or Die - Speaking of Rob Hubbard. This is actually like 5 skating games in one
California Games - great set of mini games here too
Raid Over Moscow - really difficult sci fi game. I couldn’t even get out of the hangar as a kid but I was fascinated with it
The Last Ninja - action adventure with outstanding music
Nice! BoulderDash is my fav C64 game 💚
Just picked up this keyboard this week. Was my first computer. Had a ton of fun waiting on disks to load, die quickly, and then wait for everything to load again. I played a lot of Wizards of Wor, Jumpman, Arachnophobia, Sammy Lightfoot and lots of 2600 ports.
Wizards of Wor looks right up my alley!
@1:12 Nice Austin Powers reference!
A classic!
@@TechDweeb Yeah baby!
I don't have any sentimental attachment to the C64 but I want that keyboard.
Had a c64 growing up, favourite game... Giana sisters! To the point I have an Android version on my phone since... Forever! Really not fun to play with on screen controls, but it must stay there, I don't even know why... And my c64 copy on cassette I had obtained it through... Duplication of my friend's original using one of those double deck cassette players that were meant to copy audio tapes, did a lot of this back then....... Seems like 2 centuries old tech now, and still love the memories I have of it
Power drift was truly fun. I played it for hours. Mr. Angry was one of my favourites back then even though the premise of the 'compromising position' went over my head at the time. You were one of the paparazzi (I think) trying to get a photo of a page 3/glamour model in the aforementioned compromising position in a hotel, but for some reason your camera was in pieces and distributed across various rooms in the hotel and you had to find all of the pieces before you could take the photo. In one of those rooms, however was Mr. Angry who would chase throughout the hotel if you happened across him. It was really fun. I can't for the life of me remember how the developer increased the difficulty from level to level however, more hotel rooms perhaps. Maybe you could tell me 😅 Another one I remember for it's difficulty over anything else was snokkie (i think) a platformer where you played the titular character who was a penguin. Creatures too, I have a vague recollection of. I remember it being very bloody when one of your creatures died 😂
Thanks for this fun video! Btw, how's the joystick that comes with the keyboard? You probably already know about some of the amazing homebrew games that have come out for the C64 in the last few years, but just in case you don't, here are a few highlights: Sam's Journey (platformer), Steel Ranger (run 'n gun), Briley Witch Chronicles (RPG), Caren and the Tangled Tentacles (graphic adventure), Planet X2.1 (RTS!), Lady-Pac (arcade), Wormhole (platforming / run 'n gun). Cheers.
I was an Amstrad CPC464 kid, but enough friends with C64's for it have fond place in the nostalgia berries. Thanks.
Ah jeez, I'm older than TechDweeb. 👴
C64 games, you say?! How about Space Taxi, G.I. Joe, Spy vs. Spy, Impossible Mission, Cave of the Word Wizard, Ghostbusters, Zulu, Caverns of Khafka, Alice in Wonderland, Zaxxon, B.C. Quest for Tires, Congo Bongo, Lazy Jones.
That'll keep ya busy!
Cool Giana Sister I played that on our amiga 500 it was great as we never had any nes or snes when I was growing up.
Friday the 13th and Project Firestart are synonymous with the c64 for me, along with California games, Summer Games, and Winter Games. Oh, and Championship Wrestling. My gosh, the memories.
Winter games was one of my first c64 game i played back in the days..
Lol I was playing on my C64 when you were in diapers.
Fun fact, thanks to the C64, the first word I learned to spell is Load.
Some of my favorites include boulderdash, impossible mission, and great giana sisters (though when I played it, it had a mario sprite swap, hahaha)
Press play on tape?
Damn that desk is cozy ASF my boy
Oof I was born in ‘84. The Commodore 64 was my first personal computer experience. Bruce Lee, MULE, and Gateway to Apshai were my favorites.
1982, my freshman year of high school. My first computer was an Atari 800 followed by a Commodore 64.
I think my favorite C64 game is Sam's Journey. It's out for NES/Famicom as well Digital or Physical. I will be ordering Piopow for NES this month before it's to late and they are all gone from Limited Run.
I can really recommend Sam's Journey. It's a modern C64 game on disk or cartridge - it's still for sale I think. I also bought it for my Famicom toploader. The music, graphics and gameplay are awesome!
Played Wasteland on C64 , a great under rated RPG. Fallout way before it was even a thing. Glad they brought it back & are making a new version.
Helps that fallout is currently so popular.
I had a PCjr but my friend had a c64. My fav games on it were Marble Madness and Bruce Lee.
I have the Famicom version.
I like the clickiness and the color scheme.
good video on a great system and It is indeed a good keyboard!
I'll play C64 on my Zazzbitty at some point... After I finish Final Fantasy 6 for the first time... and snap out of my awe of it...
ANYWAY please do continue, I'll be paying attention.
Waiting patiently for the Commodore 64 Hidden Gems video...checking my inbox, shucks, still not there...waiting longer.
My first PC experience was an IBM PC clone that my step-dad owned. None of the games on the system were as graphical as the Commodore, but I loved playing many of the text-based adventures I found on the system. I can't remember the name of the game, but I laughed my butt off when I learned I could kill the King's ghost by throwing the candle stick at him. To this day I keep a candle stick by my side in case I ever find a real-live ghost to test this theory.
Don't forget SAM which was probably the very first software only voice synthesizer on the C64.
Cool!
Born in 1982 and 40 huh?
Me too, Pal... Me too...
I absolutely love keeping up with commodore 64 🎉
I want the 8 bit do NES keyboard. They're awesome looking
Lode runner, street rod, racing destuction set, buggy boy, beach head, ikari warriores, sspy hunter, rambo, power drift, choplifter, archon, uridium, wonder boy, wonderboy in modterland, sim city, roadwars 2000,raid over moscow, operation wolf, great giana sisters,r-type,wizard of war, and so many more. That was the best time of my life getting "backups" copies of games from my friends. Thx for the memeries and have a great day :)
That *Dweeb* has his work cut out for him.
The C64 was my third computer, eventually to only be surpassed by the amazing Amiga 1000. My mother gave it away and I still have trauma! Some great games, Impossible Mission, Wasteland (precursor of Fallout), Elite, Defender of the Crown, Gunship, Traveler, Supremacy, Silent Service, Autoduel, Uridum... ...just too, too many!
You're killing it
I grew up with that thing. Wrote my first own program on it, in assembler, at the age of 10 or so.
There are at least 100 more really great games for the C64.
Super Huey on the C64 was the 2nd flight sim I ever played and the first combat flight sim. 5 1/4 inch floppies = ouch. But man that soundtrack
I had two C64s. One I got for Christmas and one I won from an TV Invisionaries contest.
I wish those super buttons were rotator knobs that you could map to your video editing and/or art software.
Check out modern C64 games like Sam's Journey, A Pig Quest, Lester, Arcade Daze, Bad Moon Rising, Briley Witch Chronicles, Harharagon, Knight 'n' Grail, Muddy Racers, Organism, Polar Bear In Space, Robot Jet Action, Soulles, Wolfling... and more. You asked 😂
I just looked them all up and they all look amazing! I'll check them out!
So many games to suggest: Turrican, Defender of the Crown, Elite... I still have the C64 it in my parents' garage.
My dad was a big computer geek/enthusiast. He had a Tandy 1000 but gave it to me after he got a Commodore 64. He got it mostly for being a family computer to do family things (banking, mail, etc.) but the Commodore 64 wasn't good for that. Well, he said that, I couldn't tell you. So the Tandy 1000 with its dual 5 1/2 floppies was my first PC. My dad got rid of the C64, never got back into PCs until much later when Pentium 4's and Windows XP were the thing.
Ghost Chaser on the C64 was the first game I ever beat as a little dweeb. I love that game so much!
I was an avid C64 owner and user from 1984 until,. well I am stil owning (more than one) them and using them. I would suggest the following games: Wizball (stick with it, its an amazing game), Uridium, Paradroid, Creatures, Last Ninja ( 2,3), Commando, Platoon, and Pirates. I spent too many hours in the 80's during my early to late teenage years addicted to so many games during the 80's on this machine, and in the U.K. it was rare to have a C64 as most of the kids had a ZX Spectrum.
Great Giana Sisters on Amiga 500. Core memory right there. Next to Emerald Mine and Galaga.
I really, really like the C64's SID chip. Great music on that thing, all curated nicely in the High Voltage SID Collection. I particularly like songs by Goto80. About the keyboard though, the keycaps are available in several colors. They're called "AF SA" profile keycaps, and this particular brand is recognizable by the font and the way the period is misaligned on the "> ." key. They're a clone of the MG Monster / MG Ember premium sets, but IMO they're better than the original, while also being a fraction of the price.
Mayhem In Monsterland
The last ‘AAA’ title for the C64
A limit of the C64 style keyboard is the lack of the PETSCII characters in the keycaps: those would be real advantage of that keyboard...
If only the keyboard had the keycaps of the C64C, but still kept the same colors of the C64... the C64C had less sharp corners, which made typing much more comfortable.
Realm of Impossibility
I'd love for 8BitDo to release an Amiga 500 Keyboard/case, that can take Raspberry-Pi's, DE10 Nano's and compute modules, would be amazing.
Hmm, still have good memories of Raid on Bungling bay, Commando, Shogun, Battle for Middle Earth and Bruce lee..
Good times.
Yaaaay! Now do the ZX Spectrum, pleeease 😊
Very interesting... while I'm mildly disappointed that the Keyboard and Joystick can't be used simultaneously, it does potentially allow for simulation games like Microprose's 'Project: Stealth Fighter' and 'Gunship' (which have combined Joystick/Keyboard controls) to be fully playable via emulation...may have to investigate this further.
Very helpful vid, BTW; not bad for a randomly recommended by YT vid 👍
I have the C64 keyboard. It is great! Makes work more enjoyable. Reminds me of my first gaming system... The C64. Long live Jumpman!
Nothin like waking up to someone screaming 'Commodore 64 emulation!'
I have Box White switches in my Q3, they're very nice switches indeed.
I need Techdweeb Merch❤️ Stickers,Keychains,Shirts..you name it.
Respect to Taki and Russ but you, TD, are and will always be my favorite Retro Tech Dweeb just because of your absolute uniqueness.
They should hire you as a voice actor imo.
And one more thing: This man has beautiful hands. There I said it. Sounds like a love letter and it kinda is. A respectful and platonic love letter.
I held this back bc I didnt want to sound creepy or too oversharing my thoughts but now I don't care anymore since I know that my mom has cancer and goes through chemo. It changed me drastically.
So if anyone took time to read this:
Have a wonderful day and hug the ones you love, buy them flowers amd sweets and take care of your moms horses in RDR2. Tell them you love them my fellow Dweebies. Love you❤️
Now we need a "Don't sleep on Spectrum emulation" video 🙂
I got given a Commodore 64 for helping some friends move house and although it wasn't working, I was able to get it fixed. No disk drive but it did come with the cassette player, a Quickshot joystick and some games on cassette. Uridium, Ye Ar Kung Fu, Impossible Mission, Paradroid and Suicide Express were on the cassettes. It stopped working again after about 6 months so when I took it back to get repaired, the techie was selling Amiga 500s so I traded it in for one and bought the OG Civilization and X-Com Enemy Unknown. Good times.
