The soldier pulling himself out of the mud, at first I thought he was a member of "The Smoking Snakes" (Força Expedicionária Brasileira, FEB, nicknamed Cobras Fumantes), but doing some more research with the patch on his shoulder as well as his helmet, that's Sgt Henry Johnson of the 15th New York National Guard Regiment, aka "The Harlem Hellfighters". Medal of Honor recipient and recipient of French Croix de Guerre avec Palme, France's highest award for valor. The Medal of Honor was awarded to him in 2015.
Sgt. Henry Johnson is "one of the five bravest American soldiers in the war."
Theodore Roosevelt Jr. in his book "Rank and File: True Stories of the Great War"
The Asian soldier with the cocked-hat, that's a Nepalese Gurka named Havildar Gurung (per the credits) who earn the Victoria Cross in the Burma campaign off WWII. Sgt Awal Nur, who took part in a secret mission over the Himalayas, Lt. Audie Murphy the highest decorated soldier in US history who served in WWII. Sgt. Alvin York a humble man from Tennesse who was awarded the Medal of Honor in WWI for exceptional bravery under fire, just to name a few.
I also notice a soldier with the Croix Lorraine on what looks like a French flag arm band, meaning he was a member of the 'Forces françaises libres' forces in WWII.
Doing some reading I found out that a large number of French colonial troops from territories such as Chad and Senegal had joined with the 'Forces françaises libres'. Damn, Sabaton REALLY does their research! I suspect that soldier is Lt Comba, but I can't find anything on him.
ATS Ivy Valentine is coming up on a dead end, I found that the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service) was the British version of the American WAC's, but I cannot find anything about her name.
As I've been working my way through the names listed in the credits and found another one: Private George Stringer, Manchester, Awarded the Victoria Cross at the Battle of Es Sinn in Mesopotamia.
Capt. Dobson, 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion, Killed on 9 July 1916 in Flanders.

This song is an ode to Motörhead, to Lemme, and to every soldier in human history. Every soldier who gave his or her life for their homeland. Everything from Desert Storm to the wars in ancient medieval Scandinavia. In one fell swoop, Sabaton and Motörhead honored hundreds of millions of soldiers who lived hundreds, if not thousands of years apart.

Nice touch paying some tribute to Soldiers from different generations & nations. It absolutely is about the Battle of the Somme, which was in 1916. The stategic planning took place before the main German attack on Verdun though. In the end, the attack on Verdun even kept forces from participating at the Somme, while the initial French-British plan was a decisive attack there. While it was not the decisive attack, it still had that effect in combination. Just not as planned beforehand.

Sabaton's 2 latest albums have been about WW1. I learned quite a lot about it in school but I never understood then how bad it was based upon casualties for so little gained. The Swedish education system had a quite good level when I grew up. But I've learned stories I didn't know anything about before I became a Sabaton fan! This Motörhead cover was made for Joakim's voice in my opinion.

In 1914, the British Army was the only army involved in the fighting that didn't use a draft to fill out their ranks. In 1915, when the British called for more volunteers, they were organized in what were called "Pals Battalions," where they would live at home through their initial training and conduct the training in their local area. The Battle of the Somme was the first action in which these battalions were used on a large scale. The attack was scheduled to start at 7:00 AM. In the worst areas, some units suffered up to 80% casualty rates. By the end of the day, around 19,000 soldiers had died, with most of those being killed by around 9:30. The Royal Newfoundland Regiment had a casualty rate of over 80%. The only soldiers not killed or wounded were the few that weren't assigned to take part in the assault.

I just realized...Lemmy was from northern England. Especially as a kid, he would have heard about or even witnessed the effect that WWI had on his community. Like the fact of there being more women than men, hearing or maybe even seeing himself the gravestones with the same family name, the death date in a span of 4-5 years, and the ages being mid-late teens to early 20's.

This song really illustrates what soldiers go through during war. That is why so many soldiers who come back are never the same. We call them heroes because they made it back but that's not enough. We just don't understand what they went through. My father puts it like this. Thaink about the scariest movie that you have ever seen, then multiply that times 100 because you are living it. That's the way that he described Afghanistan.

British volunteers from England, Scotland,Wales, South Africa, india, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, colonies in Asia and more all served in the battle along with French troops and more. It was a incredible destruction of life for all sides over a million men and boys were killed for just a handful of miles. 1916 is the middle of WWI, when every country had had their army shot up twice and the propaganda got really nasty. Lots of kids joined too early. Lots of towns lost all their young man that all joined together in the same regiments that were all thrown into the fire of the guns in another offensive that did nothing. If you want to learn about the first World War, I recommend the Hardcore History Podcast series "Blueprint for Armageddon"... Dan Carlin does an amazing job painting a picture of how horrific the war was.
Every year of the war sounds like the worst thing you've heard, and every year got worse than the one before. For example, "drumfire" was an artillery bombardment so rapid that the shells would land faster than a drum roll, and this would last for hours. The battle of Verdun was so massive that almost every French soldier was rotated into it at least once; over 50% of them became a casualty on just the hike to the front line.

1916 was in the middle of WWI. The Battle of the Somme was a single battle that took place as part of the overall war. The text at the end is specifically referring to what were called the "Pals Battalions," which were battalions made of of soldiers largely from the same relative geographic area because the British government thought they could get more volunteers if they promised they could serve with their friends. That turned out to be a terrible idea because it meant that the young male population of a town could be utterly devastated in single battle. The Somme was where that error came to light, and by the end of the year, they'd stopped doing pals battalions.

What Sabaton are doing is creating an aural history through modern day sagas, stories that can't be silenced by censorship or governmental control.
They create true memes by adding these things to social consciousness, remembering the best and the worst of humanity and teaching the lessons that history desperately wants, no, _needs_ us to understand.
Until we do learn, the soil will remain stained with the blood of heroes and villains alike.

Hey friend I only just found your channel and it's always good to see another Sabaton fan!
You say you don't know anything about history but Sabaton is a great way to learn. The song is a cover, originally by Motörhead and as well as to soldiers (as you can see in the video, there are a lot of military uniforms from history, not just WW1), and it's clearly a tribute to Lemmy and Motörhead too (carrying a photo of Lemmy and some of the members are in the video).
1916, amongst other awful events, was a battle that is usually called the Somme offensive, which was a battle in WW1 which is generally considered one of the deadliest battles in history. If you want to look into it more, the story of the Somme is absolutely heartbreaking and really encompasses both how brutal and how pointless the amount of death in WW1 really was.

    Coming from West Yorkshire
(which geographically is in the SW of the county)
in my youth I took it as normal
    that there were war memorials
for the dead of the First World War
    (and the Second World War)
The lists on the monuments were LONG
and my school also had a war memorial for
the boys who died in WW1 and WW2
    The problem in WW1 was
that there was no good way of dealing with a machine gun
so if you attacked the other side
they just machine gunned you down.
The tank was developed to overcome this problem
and the British developed the 1919 plan to
    deal with it.
They never implemented it as WW1 ended in November 1918
However the Germans studied it and used the ideas
in what we know as the Blitzkrieg tactic
of a highly mobile attack overwhelming the defences.
    George Santayana said:
"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

The black-haired guy with a cap, carrying Lemmy’s framed photo is Eddie Rocha, Sabaton’s (and previously Motörhead’s too) tour manager. The Motörhead dudes are both by his sides.

You were wondering who was in the picture that a man was carrying in the video and in the picture was Lemmy Kilmister, lead singer of Motörhead. Motörhead is the original band for the song 1916.

It sounds more like a Ballad as opposed to their conventional music.
The message I'm getting from this cover in particular as opposed to the original motorhead song is that in times of war, it doesn't matter what nation you are from, how old you are, or what era it is, there is something that unites all Soldiers. That all of them are humans too. They are husbands, brothers, fathers and sons, to someone out there, with their names lost to the passage of time.

1916 the hight of WW1. This song is about the boys who charged into the battle of the Somme. 57,000+ dead. Most of them were friends, neighbors, coworkers, family. A whole generation lost

As always with a new Sabaton song doing my rounds of reactors to see how much of a punch to the gut it is or how much of they learn
I recommend you listen to the original of this song by motorhead! Very different voice but carries the same emotion

Freedom is not a lifetime guarantee!! Some people still don’t have it today. Remember the debts we owe others that came before us. Do not forget history is constantly repeating itself because we never learn. Ukraine is just todays example that there are large powers in this world that could turn their eyes to any of our countries tomorrow. Making our friends/families names in the history pages. Love to all that serve ❤

To not know everything about history is ok, noone knows everything, but to not know about the world wars (both of them) is just ignorant, sorry dude. They were the ones of those events in human history every man, woman and child should know no matter what, because of how terrible the events were and what impact they had on next generations and the world as whole. Man, seriosly…

    That was the great war.
Although this is about English soldiers, there were also American soldiers in this war. Albeit very late.
It's obvious from the way you speak that you have no idea about the history of your own country. Which is very sad. Especially when you consider that this war made the United States the world power it is today.
Maybe you should go back to a history class instead of portraying yourself as a "cool guy" on TH-cam.
This just confirms my opinion of many (thank goodness not all) people in the US.
