- A trip to Cadiz with the travel sketchbook and just a few art supplies. Lots of inspiration, drawing out and about, painting and building up a picture to give an essence of time and place.

Thank you for climbing a towel that I could no longer climb with my disability and showing me a view that I would never get to see. Otherwise I hope you know there are people like me out there that really appreciate things like this. That seems a little to others, but they are huge to people like me. Thank you for the effort you went through.
Yes, yes I so agree. Having a disability myself I to was thrilled by the tower climb, and the walk they had out to the distant pier. But we don’t need our mobility to DRAW AND PAINT…Yahoo!!
Lovely to hear from you Jess, I am so pleased you enjoyed it....that makes my day 🥰
I'm on the thanks for the view group, too! Doing the splits on the stairs years ago changed my life. I would avoid that trick! I do remember climbing up into the rotunda of Washington State's Capitol building that has since been off limits against earthquake damage decades ago. The memory of the view is still amazing! Thank you!

Hello Cheryl, loved your comment...'recovering perfectionist'....just perfect !!! Have a great week X
Another fantastic post! Thank you for sharing your visits and travels. I'm getting to see places I know I never will which is quite exciting. I admire your dedication to sketching your travels. Good or bad (based on your view) each piece contains a special piece of history, a moment in time. Loved it all. Have a wonderful week. ♥

Perfection is a photograph, a quirky drawing is fantastic.
Hello June....I lOVE these words X
There is nothing perfect in this world, people spend a great deal of energy stiving for it whilst missing out on the journey which is everything. 🙂❣
Well said! X
What a wonderful trip to Cadiz, thanks for taking us along, so enjoyable! Love your boats and the birds, I love birds! It's always so wonderful watching you work in sketchbook, and you're so inspiring to us. Thank you Gaynor!
Hi Kathy, glad you enjoyed it, and thank you for a lovely compliment XX
What a joy to watch! I absolutely love Cadiz. I lived in Jerez for 2 years and always took my visitors there. I need to go back with a sketch book! ❤
Hello Janey, How fantastic...we ran out of time for a trip to Jerez but it looks very lovely too ! Not long after we came home we stumbled on some programmes with Michael Portillo in Cadiz and Jerez. We flew to Seville and hope to have a stay there at some point in the future ! Thank you so much for watching and taking time to comment XX
Had to wait all day to watch this video! Was dying to see how the collaged pages worked out - amazing! Echoing everyone else, I just LOVE the birds and boats. Thank you for taking us along on your wonderful trip Gaynor ❤
What a wonderful message, heartfelt thanks X
Now it's time to shop for tools... pen department here I came.
U may find Ian Robert's video this week a teachable moment. Color is what sells...😊...within minutes of viewing your site today...googled Spain.
Living in Florida since the mid 1960's...so use to green prestine landscape... makes me so proud to have old' world and modern in USA. From St. Augustine to Miami, to the prairie area's, and mountains, ect, this country is blessed with Amazing landscape. Hope U plan a long trip to travel across America with an endless range of opportunities to draw. A dried gouache pallette would be easily packed when on trips, instead of tubes. Ann, 1 who values your experimental displays of the wonderful world of art.
The Old Masters would B cheering U on if they were here. Ann, Florida fan.
I absolutely love your enthusiasm Gaynor and your encouragement. Perfectionism is a real blocker for me but, with your encouragement, I am beginning to take more risks and care less. I so look forward to your Thursday videos. Thank you so much Gaynor. They and you are so appreciated. ❤
AHH so lovely of you and I love that you are taking more risks....keep going 😍
A wise old woman once told me … do what you love -- love what you do! ❤️❤️❤️

I love when you take us on your wonderful trips! Beautiful location and I so enjoy how you find beauty and interest in the big and small things around you and then translate them into art. As always, your fashion and jewelry are spot on. And thank you for the encouragement to accept all the aspects of the process of creating, including what we think is ugly. I am VERY EXCITED to see what you do with gouache and watercolor paper and to see your style in that medium! Thank you so much for sharing YOU!
Hello Jodi, I am so pleased that you enjoyed it and thank you for your very kind compliments, so so kind X
Thank you Gaynor that you take us along on your trips. We get to see and experience beautiful places and get inspired along with you. I'm learning to let go just have fun and create and let the art develop. Thank you and be blessed !
You are so welcome XX
Thank you for taking all of us to #Cadiz #Spain🎉❤ #travel #sketchbook 🎉❤ I too appreciate the tower climb. I was wondering, maybe that's how watersides were invented, hence the no stairs. 🤔 😂
Oh crumbs Stefanie, I'm now imagining whooshing down that tower 🤣 Have a lovely week X
I particularly loved how you captured the architecture of the dome, using the pen and blue wash..💖
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you once again for all the beautiful art and inspiration ❤😊!!
My pleasure 😊
Lovely video again ❤ I’m a huge fan of gouache!
Thank You Cindy X
I LOVE your delightful bird sketches! Because of you, I started my first sketchbook. A watercolor scene was finished today!
Great job!
Oh my word! The views were spectacular! The birds. The boats. All of it! Thank you for sharing your jaunts with us again ☺️ I loved all the sketches. I need a little zipper bag like that too. That is just a perfect size. 🙌🏻 Hope you have a wonderful weekend! Roxanne from Atlanta 😊
Hi Roxanne, it was all over too soon, but great memories and I am glad you enjoyed it XX
Thank you for the encouragement Gaynor! I loved seeing all your sketches from your holiday - what a great way to keep memories. :)
Hello Helen, I am so pleased you enjoyed the sketches, you are right, a book of memories and something for the future X
Another great video Gaynor, thankyou for taking the time to video during your holiday, the scenes were so atmospheric the sights and sounds, the view from the cathedral. Your sketches were great, love your boats and birds and you are so right about perfectionism it's such a spoilsport. Have a great week X.
Hello Anita, I am so pleased you liked it, it all feels like a dream now we are home and it's raining, A LOT !!! Have a great week too XXX
Looks like you had a wonderful time Gaynor. Thanks for sharing with us and your wonderful joy in your art discoveries. Looking forward to giving gouache a try .
Hello Janet, let me know how you get on X
So lovely to see all the beauty on your trip and you’ve captured so much of it in your sketch book….. Love the birds and the roof top sketches you did…. The buildings so gorgeous! Yes, you really captured the personality of those funny birds and the way they dash along….. Yea have gotten into watercolours more this year and getting into gauche with a new pastel gauche set, and some acrylic inks….. it’s all been about the water soluble materials this year and mixing it all up with a bit of college….. I can’t wait to really get going with it all again, now my space is almost ready…… Watching your vids gets me so excited and inspired always…. Thanks for sharing! 🫶x
Thank you so much X Have a wonderful week 🥰
Gosh what an interesting place! Looks fun going on all these trips…lots of arty adventures 😊 Thanks for sharing your time away🙏
Love that you’re embracing imperfection…that’s when the magic happens! Loved the Birds and Boats ❤️ Hey you should do a seagull with the wader boots on , that’d be Fun! 🤸♂️ Yay! Thanks Gaynor for all the inspiration ❤️❤️❤️
Hello Teresa X I have attempted to give a bird shoes but boots...worth a go I think !! Have a great week X
@@gaynorpattle Ha Ha Whoo Hoo! Can’t wait to see it. 😊 xx
I really enjoyed this. Loved seeing all your wonderful sketchy sketches. Thankyou!
THANK YOU X
Thank you, Gaynor. I love your sketches and irreverent approach to catching the gestures of your subjects.
Thank you Ann X
What fun to watch! Personally I think those HUGE cruise ships are too much, but then I've not been on anything close to that size! So much fun to get your take on that very long and winding ramp! What a view from the top!
The Port in Cadiz is pretty big, but it was such a shock to see !!! Craig read up and the Monster carries 5,500 passengers and 2,200 crew !!!!!
Your trip to Cadiz was so enjoyable that I will be watching it again during the dreary rainy days here in Oregon. The light was magnificient! I wanted to sit in the Plaza watching the sun travel across those lovely stone buildings. Drinking a nice wine of course. Your sketches are so inspiring. I hope to see some paintings inspired by this experience. Looking forward to your goucache experiments.
Hello Mary in Oregon 🥰 I am so pleased you enjoyed the video, I too, hope the paintings will come ! X
Thanks so much. You alone are keeping me going on my painting journey.
So So kind XXX
This is now my fave vid of yours!! You make me want to sketch now!😮 I've only been somewhat comfortable using a brush to sketch and hope this becomes a new addition to my skills ❤ I have zero art training but have been " creating " since my teens ...picked up a paintbrush just 4 yrs ago and love/hate it 😅 THANK U FOR BEING SO HELPFUL, FUN, AND DOWN TO EARTH WITH YOUR SUBSCRIBERS we love you!!!
Such a fantastic message ❤ You might have zero training but all that life experience and a passion to create are all you need ! Thank you for watching and leaving such kind words XXX
Fantastic video, what a wonderful and magical place Cadiz is! I must put that location at the top of my travel bucket list! I loved all of your sketches, especially the boats and birds!! And I am a Uniball junkie as well ~ love love love those pens!
Thank You Deanna X
GI feel as I have been on holiday with you, the pictures you have taken are so good, plus loved the sketching. Thanks Gaynor.
Thanks so much 😊
Oh it was so worth waiting for band practice so I could watch uninterrupted. Looking forward to the technique mini video. And of COURSE I have gouache. Just cheap ones but good enough to try things with. Thanks again for taking us along on your holiday, it’s lovely to see places I’ll probably never get to
So pleased you liked it 😊I am interested to see how it plays on different papers ! Have a wonderful week 🥰
@@gaynorpattle thanks. You too
Great sea Sketch.
Excellent video.
Thank you
Thank you so much XX
i wish you wouldn't say "bad" drawings. i love your drawings! your unique hand making your unique marks is what makes them so interesting and delightful!! : D
Hello Judith, old habits !!! Thank you for your lovely words of encouragement 🥰
I’ve watched this video three times now. First I was mesmerized by the views. I wasn’t impressed by the monster ship, loved the green scooter and the roof top views had me pausing the video so I could really enjoy it. Second time around I tried to pay close attention to the sketches but I was lost in the great beach views and the watch tower. I had to go look up info on the camera obscura- fascinating! Third time I’m really paying attention to the art. I so enjoy your art but mostly it is your passion and enthusiasm for art. Thank you so much for sharing with us. Now for a fourth viewing so I can be sure I’ve not missed anything. 😉 Have a great week
How lovely you are.....I'm never sure what to include/exclude !!! Really pleased you liked it 🥰
As always very inspiring. You've helped me getting loose and experimenting in my sketchbook. Love, love, love and thank you. Greatings from Denmark
Hello Hanne in Denmark X So pleased to read your very kind comment 😍
Wonderful trip Gaynor, thank you for taking us with you. Great sketches to wet the appetite 👌
Thanks so much 😊
Thank you so much for another totally engaging video and vicarious traveling since I as well as some others here I’m not physically able to travel anymore! I absolutely love watching you draw and paint - the looseness and vitality you possess is so inspiring! The original “designer gouache” which is water soluble was made for designers creating artwork that would be reproduced as fabric or other products because you can achieve a matte opaque shape (think William Morris textile designs where a design for each color had to be painted separately). It is basically a very condensed watercolor (you might treat yourself a few tubes of higher grade brands to experience the difference - the vibrancy can be just incredible!). The newer Acrylic gouache is well acrylic. Unlike most acrylics, it has a matte finish, but as it is made of plastic, it is not water soluble. I think this is confusing to some because they don’t understand the difference and that acrylic gouache is a “relatively” new invention. As a youngster I worked in a textile design studio in the late 80’s in NYC (before digital) and we hand-painted our designs on a certain kind of coated rice paper using gouache (pronounced “gwahsh”😊).❤❤❤
Hello Maggie, What a fantastic insight, thank you for a great comment XXX
Hello Gaynor, it looks like you had a lovely holiday. Thank you for sharing. I loved the birds/seagulls and boat pictures, and wonder if these will lead to more work now you are home. I also likes the rooftop sketches. Interesting. Have a lovely week. Thank you again. 💐
Hello Fiona, The sketches have given me lots of ideas for further work.....I'll let it simmer for a while and hope that a few things come. Best wishes to you too X
Hi Gaynor - lovely vlog, as usual. I love the boat sketches and the birds. Have been trying gouache lately and yes it's completely different to acrylic. I too love the way you can 'wake' it up when dry. Someone once told me when drawing chairs, not to draw the chair but draw the negative spaces between the legs, etc. 👍 Thanks again - Rich.
Hi Rich, boy you have made my week...first with you lovely art on insta and then the website link !!!!! I try to remember neg spaces, that is a great top tip AND please thank Fran for pointing out a sweet chestnut ! We are back from walking Rocket but only found the Horse variety on today's route. Have a fab week X
I'm looking forward to the gouache demo. I need to move out of my comfort zone!
Hello Claire, the gouache demo is underway !! Have a great weekend X
Thank you for the beautiful views. I had to look up where Cadiz is located!! The small pen travel case is brilliant otherwise I'll keep adding more! Thanks Gaynor.
Hello Debbie, Glad you enjoyed it ! We had the longest travel day to get there but so worth while. X
Beautiful travel video-such blue sky and so much fun. Your videos are so encouraging. Looking forward to your watercolors.
Thank You X
Beautiful job in the video. So much to be inspired by on your trip. I hope you enjoyed some good Spanish food too! Really appreciate your materials part of the video, that was so helpful💕 Birds, boats, rooftops and wonky chairs-you did such a fun job on each subject. LOVE your sketchbook journeys!
Hello Sherrie, Really pleased you enjoyed the video.....the joy in sketchbooking !!!! Have a wonderful week X
Love seeing what you are up to. I am going to take the plunge & start a Sketchbook. Thanks for sharing the supplies you take with you. Winter is coming & I think I would like to start my sketchbook with things in my home & those basic supplies could easily be kept in a small basket by my chair for sketching. It doesn't have to be complicated. Looking forward to your next video.
Hello Anita, So pleased to read that you are going to start....Sketchbook is contagious...you will love it X
...and now I'm curious! I'll go find and play with my gouache paint. Your enthusiasm is so contagious, thank you. I love your birds and can't wait to see if they make their appearance somewhere else in your art
Hi Angie, the more I look, the more I find personality in every bird !!!!!
Thankyou Gaynor 😊 You’ve made me want to get out my gouache paints now - that have been lying in a drawer forgotten - I also bought an airtight travel palette - around £12.00 on Amazon - that has around 16 wells - also with a neat water holder that it slots into. - Travel Paint Palette Box with Foldable Paint Brush Washer, 3-in-1 Portable 16 Wells Airtight Paint Saver Palette Box with Brush Cleaner and Brush Holder for Watercolor Oil Acrylic Gouache Painting. Yet to try it out of course, but lots of positive reviews 😊
Hello Tricia, GET ME TO AMAZON !!! I will take a look 😊I am contemplating some quality gouache tubes for at home and to use on small paper art. Have a lovely weekend 🥰
@@gaynorpattle you too!😊
Thank you for another gorgeous video...(new subscriber here and I'm quietly bingeing your videos :) )....you have such an infectious sense of fun and wonder. it's wonderfully refreshing.
Welcome!! Lovely to hear from new viewers and thank you for watching and leaving a very kind comment X
I love the simplicity of your travel sketches…. The boats!❤ thank you for sharing your beautiful trip…it looks amazing. Will you go back ? ❤❤
Hi Lauren XXX We walked everywhere and think we saw everything ! A beautiful small city, warm and friendly, a true Spanish vibe and I would recommend it. We have agreed to try different destinations 😊🧡🧡🧡
Was this in Nov? Surfers in the waves and walking in short sleeves on the beach.. a dream to watch from cold and rainy country! And the art practice is inspiring as usual. Thank you for sharing.
YES !!! The weather was amazing, hard to believe myself now we are back to the rain in the UK.
Cadiz was beautiful~!
We LOVED it X
I enjoyed the trip to Cadiz with you Gaynor! I think the sketchbook drawings you did there are your finest yet. You have so much rich material to gain from them. I am sure you will be able to produce a few masterpieces from all the ideas within! With regards to the gouache paints, are they water based or acrylic based? I already have water based gouache but am getting some acrylic based gouache for Christmas based on a recommendation. I am already looking forward to your next post. Enjoy your week ahead Gaynor. x
Hello Simone, mine are water based, let me know what you think of the acrylic based. The joy in being able to re-ignite them, especially when you have mixed a colour, was immense !!!!!
@@gaynorpattle ☺
Still looking for a large hardback sketchbook? If amazon offers these to the UK, I love this one: Mix Media Pad, Ohuhu 10.8"x8.3" Mixed Media Art Sketchbook, 120 LB/200 GSM Heavyweight Papers, 78 Sheets/156 Pages, PU Hardcover
Another option we have in the US is this one: Tavolozza A3 (16.54"x11.69") Heavyweight Hardcover Sketch Book, 96 Pages (102 lb/170gsm), Durable Acid Free Drawing Paper for Painting & Drawing
Thanks for sharing your lovely life and artworks with us.
I'm always grateful for sketchbook suggestions, thank you X
Really enjoyed your travels and lovely sketches. Would you use two different sketch books one for acrylic and one for watercolour if so which brand would you recommend for beginners? 🤗
I'd say buy one sketchbook with paper that can take mixed media - Seawhite is a good brand - experiment on every page and you will get a feel for the paint and what you can do with it. You can buy single sheets of quality watercolour paper from good Art shops. The paper in the sketchbook I used isn't great quality but it was good enough to have a play !!! Let me know how you get on X
Oh, disregard. I saw the segment where you mention the ink pens used..😊😊😊😊
💖
Hello Gaynor, love your you tube presentations. Thank you. Im sure you know of this book but if not....David Hockney's Secret Knowledge is very interesting on the camera lucida etc..... best wishes trish (south australia)
Hello Trish in South Australia, I know he is really knowledgeable on camera techniques, I will look out for this book, thank you X
Lovely sketching! Just wondering what pens/markers did you use?
THANK YOU X
