Your right that Korean distinguishes eo and o, but you also need to remember that when singing you have a lot of room to change the quality of a vowel and still have people recognize the words. I'm English an a sound like in the word father can be anywhere between something like the a in apple to the schwa sound, or even somewhere close to an o or u sound. So I'd say that most people wouldn't even notice that difference in vowel quality. The fact that they picked up on how Celine's accent affects her singing in English and related it to sohyang likely means that they believe the effect comes from the differences in vowel quality in Korean. They didn't go out and say it, but I believe that's the implication of what they were saying. I think you guys are being a bit too harsh on them.
Actually Sohyang had a few session with Seth Riggs (Michael Jackson voice teacher) where she learnt about "speech level singing" and a proper way of mixing her voice. Since then, she has tremendously improve up until now!
You're right. Her voice really came into its own and she has progressed upwards over time. You can tell she keeps applying the training she received and practicing. She's a great testament to Seth Briggs' training techniques and I'm sure a lot of people have sought him out based on her example.
That actually makes sense to me because So Hyang is a master at communicating, and has a natural talent with languages. She speaks at least four, so she can really adapt her singing to the message she wants to deliver and is super quick in her note changes whenever she wants to do so.
Sohyang is in a league of her own. Putting aside her phenomenal technical prowess, she has this incredible ability to touch your soul when she sings, like no other vocalist i Know. She took us on an emotional rollercoaster of a journey with this performance. Thanks for the reaction. Arirang Alone next.
Your point about simple vs complex is a very good observation. She has said that this was the most difficult performance she's had to prepare for. I'd bet a large part is how complex and technically difficult the song is to sing, but I would also bet that because the song really encapsulates her own desire to use her music to help comfort people, the emotional connection with the song likely added to the difficulty she felt.
SoHyang is like.. my most favorite singer in the entire planet. 'Fate' SoHyang version is my most favorite song. It is so beautiful. Go listen to it when you have free time. God bless you.
Melia is absolutely correct. Sohyang is definitely mixing for almost the entirety of the fifth octave probably because it’s the only healthy way for a human being to do it. You can’t have the longevity in your career if you don’t save your instrument. The key here, as Melia also said, is that she brings a lot of the intensity from her chest voice up into her mix, so much so that her chest mix sounds almost like a full belt. She actually chest-mixes all the way up to at least A5 before it becomes a bit more head-dominant, but still pretty much connected.
She actually has a respiratory problems. That might be the reason why she doesn't do tours. She is a gospel singer in a church she goes to. Not sure how bad her respiratory problem is though.
She’s definitely mixing, using a very chest based makes, and alternating with belts and other registers. She’s not using a classical technique at all, may be her breathing and her ability to sustain between phrases is what reminds you of classical technique.
Okay, I'm about to write a lot because I know Chase will read this lol: I like that you guys pointed out that you think her weaker spot is her lower register. That has never really been a point of contention among vocal technique fans, since she does spend a considerable amount of time in her belting range and that's where she shines, but I do wanna lay out my thoughts out on you guys. It took me a few years to actually realize this about SoHyang, but when I did, a lot of things made sense. Essentially, her issue in the lower register isn't thyroarytenoid muscle underdevelopment, but rather an unfamiliarity with a wider range of muscle coordinations of her chest register. SoHyang rarely ever sings in pure chest voice. She usually carries some _slight_ head voice muscle engagement when singing in her lower register because it provides a sweeter and lighter tonal quality, and that's usually what she goes for. It's the reason she sounds less projected and weaker. I call them "mixy lows". If you hear her rendition of songs such as "It's Only My World" (a rock song), you'll hear her actually engaging full chest voice and projecting into the mid 3rd octave with no issue and considerable chest resonance. It's like two ends of the chest voice spectrum. Dark, projected, full VS light, weak-ish, brighter. The issue is that her instrument down there isn't as evened out as the rest of her voice is, so she rarely ventures into muscle coordinations that lie between those two ends of the spectrum. (They aren't total ends, yes, but I'm trying to make a point). Regardless, I don't think it's arguable that her chest voice is 'underdeveloped', since you can very, very clearly hear a strong, present and thick chest resonance in her mixed voice. That isn't achievable without proper thyroarytenoid muscle development and proper muscle coordination. The second thing I would like to mention is that I like that you also pointed out that she "works hard" when engaging her abdominal/core area. She has mentioned that that is one of the keys to the way she sings, as (according to her) she is "a singer who relies on breathing". In my mind, she is one of the only contemporary singers to have mastered the art of "appoggio" so well. I'm sure Melia is familiar with this concept. Proper diaphragmatic breath support/engagement extends beyond just regulating your airflow accordingly to fit each vocal phrase. Proper regulation and balance of the air *pressure* (according to not only the duration of the vocal phrase, but also the volume, the register, the placement and the implementation of secondary techniques that change the shape of the vocal tract, such as twang) is crucial to alleviating extrinsic muscle tension from the laryngopharyngeal set of muscles that surround the larynx and make up the vocal tract. That's one of the reasons that she's able to venture to as high as the beginning of the 6th octave in a fairly balanced mixed voice with virtually no extrinsic muscle tension and a relatively relaxed and freely moving/fairly neutral larynx. If I'm being honest, I never fully understood how appogggio can affect muscle contraction of the vocal tract, so if you two can enlighten me on this, please do. It's very unclear how extensive her vocal training is, but there a lot of things I can hear that point to classical singing influences, such as her ability to implement chiaroscuro when she wants to, her implementation of twang, her "forward placement", her masterful use of appoggio and the widening of the pharyngeal space by lowering her larynx. She was definitely trained into gospel belting though. In my opinion, she was not classically trained. She doesn't have the head voice of a classically trained opera soprano, HOWEVER, she is the only female contemporary singer I've heard to sing the way male opera tenors do. She rarely does this, but in some songs (like "Do You Know") she goes chesty, adds twang, lowers her larynx and "places in the mask", which is the recipe for the classically trained tenor sound. It sounds very good. Lastly, to answer your question, she is mixing. Above the first passagio it's virtually impossible to "fully belt" aka use pure chest voice. Unless you pull up your chest voice (Christina Aguilera I'm looking at you), then you mix. But she can control her ratio, placement, tonal balance and weight. That's why she's so versatile and so in-control.
WOW!! This is full of amazing commentary on vocal pedagogy! Hats off to you, your understanding of the voice is impressive and insightful. First let me say, I love your saying “mixy-lows” feels like a great description for what we’re hearing! Now to answer your question about appoggio and it’s effect on muscle contraction. (This is Melia, surprise 😅 - chase and I talked about this because I was too excited) I think of it as basic physics of phonation. We need consistent airflow in order for our vocal folds to fully and properly phonate. Think of the grass example, you hold to blades of grass together and blow through them and they whistle or hum. If you’ve ever tried this, the air must be consistent and steady in order for you to make a sound. Obviously our blades of grass (vocal folds) are surrounded by a complex case of muscle, tissue and cartilage, and because of this, we can compensate for the lack of consistent airflow by using our muscles to create sound. It is my understanding that by using your air with consistent pressure and what I hesitate to call control, you allow your vocal folds to naturally adduct, and you make your natural sound. Now there are a lot of factors that go into this, the register in which your singing would effect the amount of air and the pressure in which you exhale but these are all minute changes and the concept would generally be the same for wherever you sing. There’s so much more we’d love to address, we’re considering making a video about this! Chase also has opinions and thoughts so we might just do a video response!
@@ChaseandMelia Thank you for the kind words ! Loving the excitement and appreciation !! And also thank you for the explanation Melia ! If you do end up making a video-response, I'm very much looking forward to it ❤
@@helloyou2253 me too.. i left the chart.... But the fact that i know is,, SOHYANG is/will be , one of the BEST singer in the WORLD for many years to come ! Period
Chase were right; she's not a classical trained vocalist, in fact she never had any formal technical vocal training except that short "vocal session" with Seth Riggs back then (If it's counted). Well, I assume the next one is her rendition of "You raise me up" from the "Immortal Songs" performance(?). Cheers^^
She's not classically trained, but she took vocal lessons from Seth Riggs, who created the Speech Level Singing (SLS). I agree about her lower register, as a high soprano, her sweet spot is in her higher register. But she's been working on her lower register and it is getting better. Please react to her rendition of Lean on Me, I love the changes she made to the song because it reminds me of Sister Act Joyful Joyful.
I hope you guys react to Sohyang "You raise me up". It's one of her phenomenal renditions highly appreciated by the original songwriter Brandon Graham:)
People sometimes misunderstand that she might have classical training because of her mixed high belting. I think she is a singer who symbolizes the SLS. But that does not mean that she is the disciple of the SLS.. Seth riggs only gave her a few tips,, but rather, it would be fair to say that his SLS method was justified by her presence. Her teachers were Mariah and Whitney on the radio, and she was the only one who trained herself.
It's always fun and informative to watch your reactions. Appreciate how you attempted to make a distinction between a singer and an musician. Watching the incorporation of conversational piece by Sohyang here, I would make the statement that this performance also included the element of performing as an artist. It's interesting to hear your discussion on vocal efficiency. It gives me some idea why Sohyang's resonance sounds so full and distinct. Based on materials I have come across, Sohyang is never classically trained. Sohyang shared that she received lessons on mix voice from Seth Riggs when she was in L.A. and she worked hard to master that technique. Her use of mix voice is very evident in her performances.

Would just like to clarify on this: She was in States for a holiday and she was not looking for Seth Riggs. A common friend recommended that she met up with him, and she ended up taking 4 lessons from him. Apparently she took away alot from her 4 sessions with him. Do you called that trained? Maybe you do, but it sounded like she had a few years under him.
@@Rosannasfriend The impression given was, she was under him for many years. If 4 lessons qualified as being trained, then it is clearer to say that she had 4 lessons from him.
Not only is Sohyang classically trained she is a professor of music also. I think she would be more than qualified to teach you. If you would be so fortunate😊
Best watch this on Vimeo because they provide English subtitles. She is self trained and a gospel singer. She plays guitar. She met Seth Riggs improtu learning a few sessions only when she was in America for a short period.
Sohyang has done so many phenomenal performances. She is really an unreal vocalist with perfect techniques and stunning voice. Love your reactions thank you!
12:33 - 12:36. Actually, she had it wide, then narrow, then wide again. It was very subtle changes in the shape of the vowel, which I’ve always learned you should do anyway.
She took an old time gospel song and re wrote it into this master class. . She has not been classically trained but has worked hard to improve. She had a few sessions with Seth Richard's to work on her mixed voice. She also gave lectures at a Korean University and had her own music school. She has also sang in churches in over 60 countries. She is devoted Christian and sings not for money and fame but to bring comfort to those in need though she has struggled with this conflict. She has turned down many contracts the latest being with Sony. Keep up reactions. I'd suggest the Begin Again performances like I Will Always Love You, Love Poem, her own song Stay and Misty to see another side of her.
Great reaction and analysis. Look forward to more insight into this amazing woman's unbelievable talent . She is simply the greatest female vocalist on the planet in my opinion. Peace.
I don't know much about vocal analysis and my singing is only tolerated by my chihuahua, all I know is that SoHyang's voice is always inspirational and emotional, even takes my atheist butt to church sometimes.
The whole topic of "Is it mix or chest with twang?" gets super heated for some reason but she says it's a mix and credits her work with Seth Riggs for helping her to figure out how to balance it properly. Otherwise she's self taught and if you look at her videos from before 2010 or so you can see evidence that she had an "Aha" moment and went from super unstable and pitchy in her upper register to pretty much what we hear today. The thing that stands out for me is exactly the observation you made about her presence onstage which can't help but make you feel good. She has something special that allows her to connect with her audience in a way that I think is unique. She doesn't just sing a song like this, she lives it and she invites Everyone to live it with her (see what I did there?) Anyway, great reaction and please do some more from The Queen!
Thank you so much for great analysis and reaction. Sohyang said that the seven-minute song was the most difficult performance in her life. With all her might, she delivered the message of consolation, hope and courage that she wanted to convey in a touching way. She is just amazing and an inspirational artist. Especially I was surprised by her amazing physical strength before her incredible vocal technique. I'm a choir member, but it's physically very difficult to sing a long seven-minute song, and if you don't have a lot of practice, you'll have a sore throat. She is a great vocal monster. Please more react to Sohyang. Have a good time.
Ive watched a ton of these reaction videos but yours is by far the most insightful and thoughtful. My favorite quality of Sohyang is that she is not so much a performer as a musician who shares the music with her audience and really draws them in emotionally together with her. Thanks for sharing your insights
Ty again for reacting to sohyang, ive waited you guys for so long hahaha. Its always nice and fun to watch you guys. And i would recommend you to "Sohyang - i will always love you".
She has never had any classical training. She is self taught. Sure you can count her 2-3 lessons with Seth Riggs but he only showed her some basic exercises like 'nei nei nei' so I don't personally count that as her being trained. She was already singing for a whole decade and quite well imo prior to her meeting with Seth Riggs. She has also never stated that she worked with a vocal coach.
She is absolutely good at mixing. In other videos, she actually mixes a lot and so good at that. Many experts and voice teachers say that she is the master of mix and using different registers. And also she got vocal lessons fron seth riggs who taught Michael Jackson so i think she is classically trained
There are so many good singers in this world, you know..... Sohyang is one of them, but special thing is..... Sohyang is an extraordinary singer. She can make us feel emotion and she has a magic she can make us cry. So touching song~!!! Her fantastic smile and soft & powerful voice make us feel eomotion and us weep from ours deep mind. Hey for you patreons .. I would really suggest you putting them onto SoHyang - I have Nothing live reaction. I always had that as my favorite performance by her and just recently a big vocal coach who never really overreacts said the same thing and was blown away by it .. which tells me there is a lot going on vocally there to break down for them.
I would prefer them to react to her performance of Dream on the same concert instead (with subtitles). I find that while the I Have Nothing performance was crazy good, she definitely sounded a bit tired there (as she sang it IMMEDIATELY after singing Dream). Besides, the climax of Dream is monstrous.
sohyang can do a lot with her voice and she can also put many texture and do many style. you can react to her song in king of masked singer. Thank you for your reaction!

I'm loving your analysis and reaction so far. But I think the girl at 12:53 was trying to hold back tears, not putting on a stank face 😆 It's a VERY emotional song, I reckon you'd have picked up on it a bit more if you'd seen the version with the English subtitles.
She is the queen of mix and no classical training but Seth Riggs taught her mixed voice and she uses it up to Eb5 a lot ! It’s one reason that she is so easy to listen to not like many or even most Lyric soprano’s! To me she sound more like a Lyric coloraturas soprano. Probably because she uses mix so much that her voice is easy on the ears and nerves, LoL !
I was a peace corps teacher , ESL, in Korea in the 1971-75. I am very surprised and I have seen a number of reaction videos That very few people mention that English is her third language.. And her pronunciation is impeachable. She is magnificent.
Her main vocal coach is Seth Riggs, who was Michael Jackson’s vocal coach. She traveled to the US to be taught by the best. The rest is all her. She does all of her own arranging and tells the backing singers how she wants them to come in as well as the orchestra. She is a perfectionist and is why, when you thought you found fault with some of her singing because that’s not her “money notes”, you thought you knew, but if she backs off of a note, it’s on purpose.
{{According to Kim So Hyang, her goal is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times}} Near the End where drops to a whisper / talking voice She whispered .. "whenever it is I am lonely who is it that will comfort me ? it is you .. Everyone" ??
She once had lesson from Seth Riggs while she was in US. because her husband was there for missionary. she had 3 hardships of personal issues. one was her parents divorce when she was 19 and she is cancer survivor and at the time she was singing on the stage like this she had a Pneumonia. Even she have been through these hardships, she is singing for a message with a hope.

If you do end up making a video-response, I'm very much looking forward to it ❤
I'am reading this whole conversation and I realize how much, on a technical level, I am nothing compared to Sohyang hahahahahaha 😀🧍
@@helloyou2253 me too.. i left the chart.... But the fact that i know is,, SOHYANG is/will be , one of the BEST singer in the WORLD for many years to come ! Period
Mario Pos can i ask for your help please
Watching you guys react and analyze Sohyang is all I want. That’s a great video from you. Keep it up 👍🏻
Chase were right; she's not a classical trained vocalist, in fact she never had any formal technical vocal training except that short "vocal session" with Seth Riggs back then (If it's counted).
Well, I assume the next one is her rendition of "You raise me up" from the "Immortal Songs" performance(?).
Cheers^^
She has a successful vocal warm-up called the nay nay nay, where she would effortlessly transition from chest to headvoice
Finally after a month waiting for you guys react to Sohyang. So happy. Thank you guys. Stay safe
It's one of her phenomenal renditions highly appreciated by the original songwriter Brandon Graham:)
this pls
Probably Sohyang would be my ultimate favorite female vocalist ever

People may debate & question about her sound/tone before & during her prime (ugly, thin watsoever haters may say) but for me, Sohyang's voice is something to look forward because of the technique ,originality(in terms of arrangement & interpretation different from typical singers), and the surprise that she has under her sleeves ...🥰💞😍🥳😘☺️
She just proves to the WHOLE world, having a good technique you will be able to PRESERVE your voice even after you reach 40s+
She is legitly *Queen of Asia's Goddess* period !
*Queen of ALL Queens*
Yess she is a mixer she explained that in a video she was trained by the same voice teacher of Michael Jackson✨💖✨💖
Seth Riggs
Would just like to clarify on this:
She was in States for a holiday and she was not looking for Seth Riggs. A common friend recommended that she met up with him, and she ended up taking 4 lessons from him. Apparently she took away alot from her 4 sessions with him. Do you called that trained? Maybe you do, but it sounded like she had a few years under him.
Having a few lessons with him doesn’t mean she was “trained by him”. Fans have a habit of blowing things up.
@@Rosannasfriend The impression given was, she was under him for many years. If 4 lessons qualified as being trained, then it is clearer to say that she had 4 lessons from him.
Finally more sohyang 😍😍😍😍
Sohyang, Sohyang! Queen of Vocals🔥
Not only is Sohyang classically trained she is a professor of music also. I think she would be more than qualified to teach you. If you would be so fortunate😊
She was not classically trained and she is not a professor, but was a guest speaker at universities.
FINALLY! I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MASTERPIECE!!
Best watch this on Vimeo because they provide English subtitles. She is self trained and a gospel singer. She plays guitar. She met Seth Riggs improtu learning a few sessions only when she was in America for a short period.
Sohyang had shown she could support as low as F3, which is respectable imho considering her soprano tessitura.
Yeeees! So Hyang again! ❤
Sohyang has done so many phenomenal performances. She is really an unreal vocalist with perfect techniques and stunning voice. Love your reactions thank you!
Anything she does is by choice.. incredible.. belt, chest, mix, head.. All beyond amazing..
Peace.
Sohyang is the ultimate mixer.
I don't know much about vocal analysis and my singing is only tolerated by my chihuahua, all I know is that SoHyang's voice is always inspirational and emotional, even takes my atheist butt to church sometimes.
Never related to a comment so much !! I am not atheist, nor religious, but she deifnitely does something to me
😂
The whole topic of "Is it mix or chest with twang?" gets super heated for some reason but she says it's a mix and credits her work with Seth Riggs for helping her to figure out how to balance it properly. Otherwise she's self taught and if you look at her videos from before 2010 or so you can see evidence that she had an "Aha" moment and went from super unstable and pitchy in her upper register to pretty much what we hear today. The thing that stands out for me is exactly the observation you made about her presence onstage which can't help but make you feel good. She has something special that allows her to connect with her audience in a way that I think is unique. She doesn't just sing a song like this, she lives it and she invites Everyone to live it with her (see what I did there?) Anyway, great reaction and please do some more from The Queen!
even in her worst early year of career she can already support up to e5
ARIRANG ALONE NEXT *PLEASE!!!* 🙏❤
yes. shes not only a great singer but also fabulous musician can arrange her song, play guitar and organ.
You guys are doing so awesome and nice reaction to SoHyang!! She is a vocal goddess!! Want to see more SoHyang reaction here! Thank you so much!!
Ive watched a ton of these reaction videos but yours is by far the most insightful and thoughtful. My favorite quality of Sohyang is that she is not so much a performer as a musician who shares the music with her audience and really draws them in emotionally together with her. Thanks for sharing your insights
Sohyang has a beautiful voice, has great high notes and belting, and is a perfect vocalist The best singer in the world❤️❤️❤️
Ok next is for sure Arirang alone. It’ll be amazing I guerantee u x
She is queen of mixed voice. She wants people to hear different kinds of voices
Ty again for reacting to sohyang, ive waited you guys for so long hahaha. Its always nice and fun to watch you guys.
And i would recommend you to "Sohyang - i will always love you".
Thank you for the reaction.
True
That's right!
@YH no she learnt
@@zoteck9177 ?
I cry when i heard this first time.. and i already listened this so many times i still cry
YESSS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS! Thank you!!
Addicted to her automatically....^^ LOVE
Hey for you patreons .. I would really suggest you putting them onto SoHyang - I have Nothing live reaction. I always had that as my favorite performance by her and just recently a big vocal coach who never really overreacts said the same thing and was blown away by it .. which tells me there is a lot going on vocally there to break down for them.
which vocal coach?
I would prefer them to react to her performance of Dream on the same concert instead (with subtitles). I find that while the I Have Nothing performance was crazy good, she definitely sounded a bit tired there (as she sang it IMMEDIATELY after singing Dream). Besides, the climax of Dream is monstrous.
Thank you for the reaction.
Very emotional song....😢😢😢
sohyang can do a lot with her voice and she can also put many texture and do many style. you can react to her song in king of masked singer. Thank you for your reaction!
It’s funny to watch “vocal coaches” who can’t even come close to singing like her reacting to her 😂😭
When are you guys gonna do another Sohyang reaction? :)
You nailed with the difficulty of the song... Sohyang herself considers this the most challenging song to sing!!
Yass... entranced by sohyang's talent... welcome to the train..you should do lean on me by sohyang
Wow. You guys are wow too. I am really learning and realizing things that i thought i was doing right but now i think its not. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise to us. I'm now your official fan. Love you gjus and Godbless.🥰
Sohyang- Oh holy night and Arirang alone. Please
thank you for great reaction/analysis!!
Thank you for letting her know
Her appealing voice is always touching :))
Next plz .. SoHyang's "I won't give up" ^-^♡
I also want recommend to you to see she singing 'you raise me up'♥️
Vimeo video performance with lyrics please you wont regret it also they are not big on copywrite strikes and you dont have to pause as much. Already set reminder.
Not because someone studied music, they are great singers. Accept the fact that there are some who are vocally gifted and born with it.
I cant wait 😊
passion begets excellence. i enjoy you 2 cause of your passion which peaks your understanding!
I'm loving your analysis and reaction so far. But I think the girl at 12:53 was trying to hold back tears, not putting on a stank face 😆 It's a VERY emotional song, I reckon you'd have picked up on it a bit more if you'd seen the version with the English subtitles.
Yess she looks like she's about to sob😅
Do more SoHyang please!!
I am crading for another Sohyang. Please do it!
Fly up to Korea and enroll in her classes! It’ll be the best thing that will happen to you in your lives.
You should check out Arirang too. I cry every time I watch this performance. Sohyang is out of this world...
I recommend watching her arirang alone performance too I really enjoyed it!!
THX’s for SoHyang’s emo perf of this epic Gospel song about Gods promise to Everyone! 💯 textbook imo!
Please do reaction sohyang - you raise me up, I love your reaction 😊
I always have to listen to the original song after watching so Hyang perform because I have never heard everyone sung like this before her 😂❤️
I'm still waiting your another Sohyang reaction ♥️
yessss
More SoHyang please
her mix voice is one of the best in the world
Ariang Alone is amazing!!! Will amaze you both.
I was a peace corps teacher , ESL, in Korea in the 1971-75.
I am very surprised and I have seen a number of reaction videos
That very few people mention that English is her third language..
4:18 actually she majored in french language in college
{{According to Kim So Hyang, her goal is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times}}
Near the End where drops to a whisper / talking voice She whispered .. "whenever it is I am lonely who is it that
will comfort me ? it is you ..
She originally learned to sing in a baptist church so gospel is her foundation in vocals. But she’s been trained by one of the best vocal trainers.
Hi coaches, we need more analysis and reaction.. check more her song and covers such arirang and the best cover on earth 'you raise me up'. Thanks! Im Malaysian and love Korean singer like Sohyang and others.. I believe music united we all ❤️
