    EQ Next was the perfect graphical adaptation to the original game. A colorful style that isn't realistic but stylized in a way that would have made it timeless instead of aging the way EQ2 has. I'm most upset that we never got to see EQ claim this art style for future projects. Landmark was absolutely reaching customers far beyond EQ's existing customer base and I'm still shocked that an investor didn't see the potential. Now we're left with EQ perpetually in maintenance mode and no one who wants to innovate on the dying IP.
    "EverQuest" needs a rebrand and "Landmark" was proof that under a different name in the same universe that focuses more on social elements (building / exploring) is a formula for success. The world doesn't need another quest/combat MMORPG and people need to stop thinking that will work for a new EQ. Questing and combat was always the least important/impressive aspect of EQ so why should a new game be designed around that? Keep combat basic and quests simple and build a new game around the one thing that WAS important to EQ. . . community.

    • @Redbeardflynn
      @Redbeardflynn  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great comment and I agree with you absolutely on the most important thing to EQ being community.
      I really was surprised they pulled the plug on Landmark since it was already done but they only left it in release for a very short time period. I thought it could have pulled in a different type of playerbase to the IP. It was fun for what it was!

    The reason why EQ felt so magical was because it was the first real way to connect with people and friends. Before we had to call someone on the phone, texting wasn’t a thing, cell phones weren’t a thing, social media didn’t exist. So for many of us, it was SO awesome just being able to live in a space with others and chat and do things together. Now a days, we are all connected 24/7 that it doesn’t feel special playing games together. This is why that first MMO feeling for many will NEVER happen again. I just feel bad for the younger generation that will never experience it because it’s now impossible to replicate.
    To answer the question… EQ 3 that is just an updated version of EQ would get me to come back. Maybe some quality of life changes but still keeping the overall feel of the original.

    My wife and I bought founders packs for Everquest Next to help support the development. Because of how they handled that, and other things that happened with our Planetside subscriptions, we canceled our daybreak accounts and havent looked back since. I wont be giving them any more money. The people behind the magic of the original EQ that had a sincere love for the game they made are long gone. Brad McQuaid used to log in as one of the NPCs, Mayong Mistmoore, and do raids and community events. The community exploration and discovery they fostered has been replaced by daybreak exploring ways into our wallets.

    EQ was the first MMO I ever played and I really enjoyed it. Over the years I have retried it now and then. I think the engine upgrade would be a solid improvement. Having said that, I generally stop playing again for gameplay issues not graphics. Most recently I started playing for a few weeks in summer 2022. I got 4 steps into a quest and then the NPC I needed didn't spawn and I couldn't trigger a spawn. I killed low level mobs while waiting for the NPC to spawn for like an hour a day for over a week and no spawn. So I ditch the quest and try a different one with more or less the same result. I spent most of my 2 weeks of playing time waiting for NPCs to spawn that probably stopped working years ago. I want to play a game not wait around so I stopped playing again.

    A full graphics overhaul, a new story, and an updated combat system could do wonders for a new EQ. At the same time they could keep many of the progression and live servers they have and just call it Classic EQ, like Classic WoW has done. However, I dont think they will, ever, because Pantheon will come out and there will be an exodus of players coming from EQ that have been waiting and waiting and waiting for the successor to come out. If Pantheon flops, I think EQ will just continue on the way it has as long as it can.

    I still go back and play on EQP99 from time to time. It's really the communication with other players and the reputation you build that is the most engaging part. What would make me go back again? The sense of adventure with other people. The cliche "sitting around the campfire in conversation" moments. The scale and danger is important. The long, sometimes stressful and intense, runs from place to place. I think EQ already does a great job making you feel really like a small pebble in a huge ocean. Unfortunately, the desire for adventure and communication in a large punishing world seems lost to most people. It's not really a question of "what will make you go back" so much as "when will you go back". That said, I'd love to see an Unreal5 facelift. Hopefully LanternEQ opens the door for that. :)

    I would play a new EQ. I for one was hopeful for EQ next. I played EQ since its launch only to be dragged away by Star Wars: Galaxies, EQ2 and Vanguard. I would love a survival sandbox MMO EQ.
    But truth be known, the only reason I don't play EQ now is because of a lack of solo gameplay. Give me the ability to solo EQ until "the" top level then I would come back. One way to do this would be cheaper mercenaries. I play EQ2 now just because the mercenaries cost so much less. Let's face it if you like to solo you need a mercenary in these older MMOs since they force grouping. Now don't get me wrong, grouping is the most enjoyable part of the game but most casual players just don't/won't/can't group. There is a reason MMOs that have easy solo gameplay in lower levels are the most popular.

  • @lairdmichaelscott

    It's real simple. New engine, new UI, etc., AI, voxels, VR support, etc, for what is essentially EQ 3. Design the game to eventually scale up to level 1000 or more. Rollout with an upper level cap of 130. Allow everyone in EQ 1 (and maybe 2) to migrate over their characters at the same level (currently capped at level 120 for EQ 1). And . . . it's go time!

    • @lairdmichaelscott

      @@VoteRedAmerica2024 Ten game years to the real year. Every game year, every raid zone scales up 1 level (to include loot). Every six months in real life, the level cap is raised 5 levels.

    EQN went with cartoonish looking characters, kind of like WOW. That was a turn off for many EQ players. WOW, and other MMOs stole so much from EQ, and EQ3 would have to go back to the basics of EQ. No map, death hurts, and no quest helpers except for fellow players. I played EQ until EQ2 came out, then I played EQ2 for about 10 years and it started heading in the wrong direction, it became a quick run to max level then gank all us PVE players none stop.

    Everquest is great but that puzzle has been hyper solved. If they released the same game with secret areas, ultra rare world spawns and bosses, hidden quests, mysterious spells, weapons and secret mechanics (for exple: monk attack combos) rare and ultra rare attack and spell animations, rare and ultra rare sound bites from mobs and toons, rare and ultra rare quest spawns, rare and ultra rare mob and boss neutral faction spawns that can be interacted with for clues about quests or how to get extremely difficult acquired items. Abilities of classes that are required for quest solving (exple: ranger - actually sees foot prints when tracking or a necro that can harvest a specific organ) I'm just going to stop here. My point is, make the game unsolvable and impossible to accomplish most things without cooperation.

      A lot of what you're saying is why I'm excited for Pantheon but I'm also wary that it might not be something anyone can pull off well anymore. Time will tell!
      Also necros harvesting a specific organ sounds so metal, I love it. One of my favorite skills in EQ was the raise dead AA for necros that would raise a weak version of whatever you had just killed. So many raids got derailed with giant versions of dragons or gods coming back to life and scaring everyone.

  • @FEV369
    @FEV369 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My issues with a revamp of EQ is that part of what I believe made EQ never actually existed. Adventure... We started playing but because it was the first real MMO we thought, "wow, how far does this go!" Later we learn it's just zones, with camps, and raids and blah blah blah...
    What made EQ great for people IMO was that as I said above, we didn't know better mixed with the more realistic character models. The game was not over the top, cartoony and everything exploding or on fire. It felt more like a harsh fantasy world, but again... it was an illusion built on our not knowing any better. Once we learned the stage we played it min/max... and that was the end. Now it's all about raiding, grinding and blah blah blah.
    The combat was/is horrible... So, EQ can't be re-made well, it will be like any other mmo, a huge people rushing in, starting guilds, grinding up ASAP and raiding... just like all the time locked servers. From there we all know you just rinse and repeat expansion after expansion. It's a waste of time and boring.

    Played EQ from 2000 to 2009ish off and on. IMO, EQ went to shit when Sony started WoWifying it. When WoW launched EQ population took a decent size hit. What did Sony do? Start punishing everyone that stuck around by making EQ more like WoW. If I wanted fast travel and little to no death penalty I would have went to that trash game when it launched.
    Project1999 was fun for a while but when you have 1000+ hardcore sweaty nerds that know everything about the game and no instancing it is brutal. I am not sitting on a dragon spawn for 18+ hours for a chance at my guild getting loot.
    I am really hoping Pantheon launches sometime before I die or most of the playerbase has given up or moved on. I am not giving them a dime until I see beta but I hope they succeed.
    I think MMOs best hope is Ashes of Creation. Not a fan of PvP, but it looks like they intend on making it punishing enough to stop griefers.

    I went back 2 yrs ago and been loving it since. Its not the old 1999 game, its evolved and in many ways gotten better. The community aspect is still there, its just a matter of finding and joining an active guild. I was surprised at how vibrant the game still is after 23 yrs and its still just as addicting. The base is older now mostly 40 to 70 age range but with merc and improvements to the game its easily played solo if one chooses. New xpansions being dropped yearly, its still a vibrant fun game and im so glad after 8 yrs away i dipped my toes back in. I was also surprised at the amount of women playing, that was a shocker to me. You can play for free and theres not a huge difference between free and paid accounts depending on what you want out of the game. Im having a ball again playing and encourage any old players to return and give it a try, your toons are sitting there still waiting for you.

    At minimum, updating the UI. Played EQ back in the day, and recently tried to go back but the interface was too painful. Not sure why they haven't modernized in the last 20 years. Tons of fans have tacked the problem, no reason for Sony, and later Daybreak, not to recognize and fix the issue.

    Really A look at the Past and a Beginning to the Future. I really think EQ3 should be EverQuest. Think Pantheon and you get pretty much what I mean. The issue with EQN is yes it's chasing World of Warcraft, Minecraft & Other Games but really is that EverQuest sorry to say but No and that is where it Failed the Hardest. But to say EQ is simple a MMO is also going to Far where in the Past it was a 3D fantasy real-time strategy game among other things. Even an RPG like Dragon Age place in Norrath would be in the EverQuest Brand. Like it or Not they were Doing a lot with EQ in the early 2000 to 2004 Like said Card Games, 3D fantasy real-time strategy game & a Console Game (PS2 EQOA) a long side Books base on EverQuest.

    @lloydbond13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In EQ, YOU were the story line. You were crafting your own adventure. Now a days, games like WoW are one long Quest Line where you play out someone else's story lines. I'd come right back to EQ if they overhauled the graphics and made the interactions feel more natural. No leveling through questing. Reward players for killing harder MOBS. That will incentivize grouping. If you get rid of the leveling through questing, then people will stick around for more then 5 minutes and it will be worth grouping. An extra 25% experience buff while grouped is pointless if it takes longer to form the group then it does to do the 5 quests you have for the area and then you are leaving. What sort of story do you have to tell about your fights? WoW makes then entire leveling process just a sprint across the entire continent to do as many quests as you can. That's how WoW dungeons have become now too, a sprint. Why? because it's not worth playing the game unless you get to max level with max gear. Then it gets hard, and only because there are special boss game mechanics. What's the point. EQ needs to come back, as classic. Where the game is getting to max level. leveling meant you could progress and travel, more and further, into unknown lands. Take on bigger risks. Fight harder MOBS that do more dmg, have more HP, have better gear drops, better abilities, gave substantially more experience, which is exactly what made grouping and making friends in EQ worth it. How else can you tell a story about grouping to fight lego's in CB and someone in the next group over accidentally pulled D'vinn and he wiped then entire zone. This coming from someone who played EQ and sucked at it. I deleveled so many times. But I loved it.

    Maybe something for casters to wear other than a Robe ?! Actual drops in game with stats..... Not game shop. Ok Seriously the Robes have to go.... Alright The Next Everquest ... I think should be ground breaking . Not in the EQ Next kind of way. But in the next step kind of way ... Lets talk about the Tolkien Universe for a second. It had all different races and empires within it.. So instead of a World designed with static beginning cities , maybe they evolve in an ( Ashes ) sort of way with the exception that : Goblins ,Orc's, Giants, Dragons and all dark races Cities are evolving too. A Big contribution to get away from zones dying... A touch of (Shadow of Mordor) game with the Roaming ( more challenging ) mobs having a taunt list for calling you out if they killed you already ( short list of like last 10 people that updates and drops off as it goes )...Silly Ranger trying to solo...hehe...... Faction too.... for death being in the wrong place at the wrong time ( just like EQ ). Also create an Ai group for the 3 giant trolls that can move around in the world making camps/caves of their own. ( maybe they are a random raid encounter) . PVP The world after all is a dangerous place.....Maybe in an ( Ashes ) sort of way or just in certain open areas of zones, and in dark cities...Not only people but NPC's in the Cities going for more power again like ( Shadow of Mordor ).. Trophies like a dragons head could also be used ( Yoda style on Dagoba ) as your house or guild hall...Not just earthly structures... Clothing should be racial and have 100 different outfits to mix and match ( all as armor drops ) [ YES You can hire actual clothing designers not just people living in their moms basements ] to design these things...I believe all that and more can be accomplished.... Just stay away from the facial recognition player to character stuff..... Oh and NONE of that ( Final Fantasy stuff ) taking 15 mins for a spell or combat combo ... lol..... With the world being Live each trying to develop their own cities You wont find static mobs in the world just waiting for combat interaction, they will be doing something, until provoked or line of sight faction provoked, Or maybe you just look good to eat......It has been a long time since I have thought about such things , pretty sure theres something I didnt touch on but that is a good start.

    If we're talking a new EQ then something along the lines of EQ B4. EQ1 with the classes, gameplay and combat but all new graphics, discoveries and world. That's what people complain about right = They've done it, but don't like EQ2. So what would the world look like thousands of years in the past ? EQ2 is a futuristic setting right ? The key here is new stuff but old EQ. For example storylines/questing for HEI could be the foundation of Felwithe. You might be able to tie in some EQ Landmark. How did Kelethin get started ? Maybe make trolls not have a city but spawn around the spamp.
    Dynamic not static storylines. The race wars should definitely be part. And what's with all those empty cities later expansions ? Make players have the choice of starting there.
    Expand the tradeskills to mean something. There's a lot of people who don't RAID and tradeskills could be end game for them. One of the big issues of tradeskills is so much of it isn't worth doing. So make end game stuff equal to RAID stuff. All the tradeskills improvements need to be a big time sink. For example spellcraft. People who sink more plat/time into their Landmark research labs should be rewarded with better spells. Spells should never drop from a random mob. This killed the market. Questing for special spells was the right way to go as well. Like the 1st pal hot.
    Make the gods you worship mean something. For example Bertoxxulous priests shouldn't be able to heal anything but disease. He's the god of disease. On the flip side no one should have better disease than them.
    There's all kinds of things that could be done. I'm happy to share. The main theme of why people are not playing is they've have done it before
    Happy Holidays !

      I really like your idea about making the diety you worship matter. I remember the way it seemed to matter most was always something like how it impacted your illusions as a bard or exchanters. Making it more important ties the lore together better. I think eq2 made the choices important for temporary buffs but they were very temporary when I played and you had to sacrifice items.

    Oh hi! I started a new account in Everquest this week, created a character and started playing. I didn't last long however, but am now playing Everquest 2 instead. As an old Wow-head since 2005, I can bring maybe some insight.
    1. My biggest gripe was not with graphics. In fact, I like it! Old 3D stuff has charm, and isn't very taxing on my not-great laptop. Also, many successful games today are not the most graphically insane ones, but often the ones that are accessible by a large amount of people, who can tweak their experience to fit their specs.
    2. The reason I chose EQ2 over EQ was controls. EQ controls, in my mind, are clunky, and feel very dated. I know they've probably been updated since the release in 1999, but they feel unintuitive. EQ2 feels way closer to a more "modern" MMO.

    • @Redbeardflynn
      @Redbeardflynn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      EQ2 is definitely more akin to the types of MMOs that were common from 2004-2014ish with a few exceptions like GW2.

    Love your videos Redbeard, but step back as I’m gonna speak blasphemy, prepare yourself ..
    EverQuest Mobile! No, not a playable EQ1 on phone, that would probably be much more difficult than a new game designed specifically for mobile.
    If you’ve made it this far shame on you and me - but something both new (graphics and sound) and old (familiar zones and character / classes). A progression style game where you progress (battle) through the original EQ- yes, your character(s) will need to battle Dorn B’Dynn to advance through the Desert of Ro.
    Why a game like this could work (turn away this will be bad) : some monetization! A game must be profitable to survive.
    I realize this will come off as an abomination of EQ to many lovers of original, but if done correctly this could be something fresh and fun for all.
    For the die hards, yes, original EQ would still be there. I myself am currently waiting for the next round of progression servers.😺

      A few quick tips that I find helpful for new EQ players.
      - make sure to set a keyboard button to select targets. It'll be easier than clicking with a mouse. I personally use tab but you'll need to move it off of it's current setting which cycles back to you. Later games do this by default but not EQ.
      - Questing until much much much later in Everquest (talking 15+ expansions in) is largely optional despite its name. The best experience is usually killing monsters.

      That's something many of us have been looking for for a very long time!
      Ember's Adrift just released and there's a vocal group of players that are really enjoying it's classic feel.
      Pantheon is going to have a lot of similarities with EQ but it's still quite a ways off.
      As for other current games like EQ? There aren't any that really come to mind that would match the community aspect and gameplay aspects. But if you want to divert a little bit the usual suspects of WoW (WoW Classic), FFXIV, ESO, and GW2 are all solid MMOs. Less obvious would be emulators for games like Vanguard, Warhammer Online, and SWG.

    I am playing Everquest, on a Planes of Power era emulation server. 😊

      I love this Era in eq! Especially on progression. My favorite eq memories are from the phinigel progression!

    P99 or PoP locked server is the only way to play EQ in 2023 imo

      I'm a big fan of a lot of the expansions after PoP but I know there's a large portion who like either through Velious like on P99 or stopping at PoP (as seen by population drops on progression servers)

      This is something I think they might want to look into for their next batch of Progression servers. Maybe making one of them f2p as an experiment.
