I wanted to make a comical video about Everquest and some of the one star reviews it's gotten over the years, realizing it'd probably be difficult to find many reviews with as old as this game was.
I did in fact find several funny one star reviews, what I didn't expect, though, was the perspective I'd gain from steam reviews of Everquest when it was on there as a free to play MMORPG.
I didn't imagine I'd find myself agreeing with some of the negative reviews about this MMO I enjoy so much.

Coincidentally, a week ago I logged back into my original character after 18 years. It is amazing how EQ was able to do things 20 years ago that modern MMOs still can’t get right.

The interdependence of the game is what made it special. I always loved the idea of so many strangers banding together to pool their talents and abilities to attain a goal. Sure it was hard as hell, but you earned what you got and truly got out what you put into it.

That's exactly why classic EQ was the best MMO ever created, you actually had to work with other people, yes getting groups made up correctly with the trifecta was hard to achieve and took time, but once you had a good thing going, some of the best fun to ever be achieved because you had to socialize and work together. Most other MMORPGs you can work alone the entire time, and even when you are grouping, youre still playing alone, no one talks to each other, no one needs each other, you barely need healing, it's just plain easy and more of a solo game.

I started EQ with beta and my husband and I played it pretty much constantly for the next five years. It was fantastic, innovative, and a great deal of fun and immersion in a way nothing could capture now just due to the time it was then vs. now. We didn't have social media, smart phones, etc. Your guild would rely on email, message boards where you share links to videos and animated gifs and heavily upon in game chat - or even phone calls! EQ, UO and Meridian were pioneers in an entirely unexplored territory, and to have experienced it at the time - it was something very powerful to have been a part of.

Better than wow. Everquest made you feel like you accomplished something. WoW was just easy. I had a maxed-out character in wow in a month, and a 2nd that took even less time. The stupid requirements for flying made it even less worth playing. Never made sense how you acquired a flying mount. Everquest was a war of attrition. Wow was a war of tedium.

EQ 1 and 2 are both better than WoW. WoW was just the first one that appealed to a much wider audience and made it "cool" to play an mmo. EQ could eventually fall to tedium, but that took a lot of time if you were dedicated to raiding etc. When I last played, which was quite a while ago now, I saw people who were still playing when I last saw them 10 years prior. Insane staying power in that game.

The disks to install EQ, the dial-up connection and finally being able to play it for the 1st time back in '99 or early 2000s was legendary. Its difficult for some to understand that this was it back then before WoW and other games came. It may not be as epic as it once was but after 24 years, its still around and still updating.

  • @akdgame

Early EQ was the best. Loved the social aspect and how difficult it could be. Unfortunately, as years passed, they started to make it too easy. Also, as mentioned in the video, there are too many zones and if you play now, it is hard to find groups as a new player. Every few years, I find myself making a new character and playing for a month or so, but without the friends and social part of the game, it is easy to get bored and leave again. We will have to see what Monsters and Memories ends up being like. Seems like EQ 2.0

Grouping was always hard to do or was a chore, because of the fixation on camping rather than dungeon clearing like Vangard offered.
I think difficulty gets misrembered, because so much was compaired to platformers that we tended to mistaken hours wait and instantly dying for standing still as a good gauge of difficulty.

Everquest was awesome when it was released. It would take 4 years before anything close came out (WoW and EQ2). I met my wife in EQ1 in 2002. I was a wood elf ranger and she was a dwarf cleric, met at the chess board in Butcherblock Mountains. We're still together playing games. The only reason we don't play EQ now is the graphics, mainly the character models and the old animations.

That was such a fascinating thing at that time and no one else really understood cause the closest thing others had were just simply chat rooms.

Ironically: EQ2 addresses the major issue of level gaps. Significantly better than EQ or WoW does. With the tutoring system where you can cut your level down and group with people that join at those levels. The shroud system in EQ is the closest I've seen to this, but you're still not playing your actual character with any of it's perks.

Wish I could get back into EQ. I've tried a dozen times over the years. When I do I end up just 3 boxxing. Alone. Never seeing another soul outside PoP. Join a guild, sure, did that. Guess what, they are all max level. I don't want to be power leveled, thanks. I missed a ton of content already. I think the thing that keeps making me quit is post level 70. It isn't fun anymore. The insane amount of AAs you cannot even grind for as F2P because of restrictions makes you not even want to bother. Pay and get them all auto granted I guess? So I can play alone for another 50 levels? Sit in a zone for the next 5-10 levels, grinding till you run out of shit to watch on Netflix? Bleh.
I can see the alure of progression servers for sure. I am always tempted to try one out. I did P99 as well, that game is just full of anti social twinks, no thanks.
I am also running into this same issue with EQ2. Minus the fact you can SOLO RAID BOSSES as you level. Like wtf? There is 0 group content to group, while leveling. I wasn't even twinked out. I was taking down heritage quest raid bosses (same con or higher). I quit after that. Not like there was anyone to group with to begin with. I didn't bother ever asking for help with group content anyway, cause I could just solo it all. I can only imagine the dumpster fire this is for people who try the game out for the first time with friends.
Maybe keep going for the social aspect of it? I dunno, like I said, was in guilds, no one really talked, everyone was busy with their own objectives and goals. I think MMOs have slowly forgotten they are for playing with other people. Just an expensive single player game now with a chat room attached to it I guess.
Oh wait, raid content you say?! Ok, play with some people 1-3 times a week, who only show up 1-3 times a week, never log in or say anything outside those 1-3 times a week. Half of them high off their asses or drunk. Not my idea of fun.
Long rant, sorry... I've lost my love of MMOs I think. It only took 22 years to do it. Maybe I just haven't found my people. I know that can be a thing as well. I do keep trying on and off, here and there though.

Sorry to say this but yes even the Subscripting got you that pops up and then opens up the webpage before you even have a chance to play the Game is a downer. It really should be if you like the Games sub to us not here before you even have a chance to play. Sad part is I'm keeping my sub to WoW more then my Sub to EQ because again Blizzard is still making Games where Daybreak Games is ?

The thing that EQ still does better than most other games is Factions, the fact that "good" and "evil" Classes/Races can just team up with each other is great. Also, in the early days when you needed a Credit Card to play it was an auto-buffer to rebuke kids and toxic people. Verant was actually a good Developer, Sony economized the game more and from Omens of War you really feel that. But the most fun from this game comes from a good group and a chatty one is even better! Have some conversation, and fun with others. It's something you didn't see in WoW, WoW was full of Blizz fanboys that flooded in from Diablo 2 in the early days and they brought their toxic mentality with them. Something that to this day EQ doesn't really have most players are older gamers that stuck with the game and they understand that teamwork truly makes the dream work in this game!

      @Redbeardflynn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

On progression servers since 2016 there is an "agent of change" that lets your guild basically pick when to raid so you'd raid at normal raid hours instead of waiting on spawns. One of the best changes EQ has made in recent memory imo.

@@Redbeardflynn Progression servers die after an expansion everyone hates. In live servers there are very few low leveled players. I never liked boxing our buying exp, so my only option is to get in a leveling guild, if there is one and mercs. 2 most popular versions of the game are p99, and Project Lazarus. they have a healthy population of low and high level players. IMHO Everquest is hurting itself with its own mechanics. It is nearly impossible for new players to make progress coz mobs are so strong in this game, and you need teammates in other to do so. In EQ live bigger problem is the early game, while in p99 is late.

But the exp came super fast i started back up for torment of velious... i was 75 and it took me about 2 weeks to hit 115... and then the aa grind started as i was only at 2k the free stuff goves like 25k but cap was still about 50k and it really took me 1 month to hit max. When CoV and TOL came out it legit took less then a week to hit max level and aa leaving the mindless mission grind for aug replacements and waiting for raids. Its not as slow anymore... i ran a ranger and with headshot i was droping mobs fast and if i hit trueshot it sped up so much and i could go pull 30 mobs in Cobalt scars or maidens eye and 3 headshots and they die. The game is pretty great but my only problem is you can not use any of your gear if your a raider without a subscription and being stuck at 2k aa when the cap in ToL for rangers was 60k. But you can break the rules and make enough money to buy krono with free accounts as the level is so fast it takes 2 days to push a char from level 1 to 85.

As a person who played EQ1 for hours and hours daily from 1999 to 2004, let me say that - EQ was a game that was first on a whole new level, it was awesome because of that, but it also had gazillion of flaws. Of course with with perfect hindsight 24 years later, I can see many things that were not so obvious, not to players, not even to devs. People's understandinf of make makes MMO run have improved greatly, but the scope of what specific people want from the MOO also vary greatly today.
I play EQ1 like MAD back in the day - but today I absolutely do not want to go back to that, and I share very little in common with hardcore fans at P99. From certain QoL features to class balance, and zone designs, there are many things today that I would have done differently.
Nevertheless, EQ was the foundation of entire MMO genre, it was as good as it could possibly be, given that even devs didn't really knew what they were doing, much less the players. modern EQ is great. Needs a lot of touch up on explaining the lore. Maybe a chronicler in NPC... a better one. Vet Players dont even know whats going on in some zones / expansions.
This alone can work alongside the achievement window and get new players on board with what to do.
So having devs explain themselves would be fun

Last comment, I honestly didn’t even think EQ was still going legit. I’ve played 99 a few times here and there, but apparently legit servers are still around. Though, PEAK playing count, like MAX, was about 750 players. Normal count over 24 hours is about 350. Back in my times peak counts were 40k-50k daily.

  • @Vertraic

I only had 2 real complaints about EQ.
1: Recovery times. I know you don't need it to be as fast as modern games, but 15 MINUTES to recover my mana when I had water and max meditation on my druid was insane. You should NOT have to spend 10 times as long recovering as you spend traveling + fighting.
2: Corpse recovery. Don't get me wrong, normally it did not really bother me, but when you could FALL THROUGH A SOLID TREE to the bottom of a dungeon 10 levels higher than what you were fighting when you fell, so there is ZERO possibility of getting anything back? Yeah, THAT was a problem. And yes, I AM talking about the Blackburrow.
    Edit:
Oh and a number 3: If your internet connection was slow, it would actually slow down your character as it was set up to not allow you to move more than a certain distance between data packets, rather than between time points. So my crappy internet forced me to move slower with a speed buff, than other people moved normally:D

As someone who loved original Everquest, P99 and TLP both leave a lot to be desired. The PNP on P99 makes a lot of zones useless or unusable in a traditional sense. I’ll use TLP as an example. While leveling, it’s common for groups to camp Hamlord. Doing this on P99 would be highly illegal, and because of this, you just have zones like this transformed into AFK camps for high level players. That’s not classic EQ at all, so in that sense, TLP actually gives me more nostalgia than P99 because those are the type of camps I did as a kid. With TLP though, the pay to win(clarity potions, no exp loss perks, Kronos etc) and the fact that everyone is boxing makes the game feel very un classic. Was a really bad feeling being a cleric main on P99 and then coming to TLP to discover everyone has a boxed cleric, and you’re better off playing any other class because of this. I can genuinely say no version of EQ exists that feels right. I think P99 without PNP would be close. Game was better when players were allowed to KS or do bad things anyways, because that was true classic EQ and peoples reputations mattered a lot. Toxic players would ultimately become shunned by other players. Was neat how the community policed itself.

I'm so glad for servers like P99 and Quarm. They give us old school MMORPG'ers a place to remember what it was like to a certain extent before Blizzard and the like turned the genre into a theme park. Back when UO and EQ and DAoC ruled the internet and the game and the "vision" mattered to some extent to the developers more so than the dollars. When names like Richard Garriott, Brad McQuaid and Matt Firor were the pillars of their MMO communities, each with their own take on how it should be done. Playing on Quarm recently has brought all those memories flooding back in... I don't think there will ever be anything like it again.

Unfortunately I didn't have a credit card nor were the cards available here but on and off for the next decade I managed to get a month here and there. I was obviously hooked and it wasn't because of the graphics. It was teh frustration of getting my necro newbie gear out of Qeynos, stumbling around blackburrow due to human poor eyesight, hunting spider silk in east karana, and finding out why you don't wander through kithicor after dark. The Alt-itis kicked in due to needs of trade skilling. Finally EQ went ftp and I was able to sub after jumping through many hoops because prepaid credit cards aren't accepted.

Everquest is and probably always will be my favorite game. But they do constantly screw things up in an epic fashion. Poor class balance because of short sighted, heavy handed nerfs. Tons of great ideas with terrible execution. Insanely busy UI, with no acceptable default layout or explanation of how to set up the UI for new players. But their biggest mistake was spreading the game too thin, geographically. They turned a ton of content into a ghost town. They should have had a finite game space, and have it evolve as the game does. Between that and mudflation.. defiant gear made 99% of gear obsolete. Defiant should have *only* been augs, to bring existing gear up to speed. But ive never played a game where i had as many awesome abilities as an everquest bard with all my clickies. Its unreal. I friggin love everquest. Good bad and ugly. And theres plenty of all 3.

Guild Wars 2 does the best at keeping zones populated, by scaling everything to the player's level, so even a max level character can get killed in the starting zone if they take on too many mobs. I think if a game works out how to get max level players into early zones regularly, that would probably help new players a LOT.

I would be curious on when you played Lotro and reviewed it as free to play. When Turbine first took that game f2p it had one of the best f2p systems of any game not just to that point, but period. You could unlock every area and piece of content if you grinded hard enough on deeds and got the points. It would take time, and likely a lot of it, but it could be done fairly easily outside of the time commitment. Still the most fun 6 - 12 month period for any mmo was in Lotro for me back in 2011-12 or so. Right before and after Isengard came out and the Great River quest pack. I had way more fun in EQ, EQ 2, and Lotro than I ever did in WoW. I tried playing wow like 6 times but I just couldn't get past level 30-40. It just got so boring for me.

It's really difficult (later on impossible) to progress solo in everquest past a certain level. Now that the population is incredibly top-heavy, it's not fun to start out anew since finding a group has become impossible. And yes you have the progression servers, but they are infested with box teams that farm krono coins to sell online. WoW is much much more fun solo.

man i used to love this game. EQ was great at that time it deserved the name Evercrack, now, I dunno. It feels like 5% of what it used to be, I stopped playing a bit after WoW took everything away. Then I rejoined some years ago to be bombarded with my guild (which I was still apart of for some reason) asking to do raids. I did not have anything set up, my keys where all gone, my Skills where all messed up, the UI was all messed up. I wanted to relearn the game a week or so, they kept bugging me so I left and never returned. It was a fun game. I do miss it, I would return, I feel like I should I know it won't be as good and I rather have those memeroies then try to make new ones. Friends I made are gone, things I did, people I meet. I would return, I just know I will get the raid things if I still in guild and then I would have to have membership. I miss it I do, I left for a reason and I do not think that reason changed.

    My only gripes -
    1. Not overly solo friendly. Originally by design. There are tools to manage, but it takes knowledge. I think this in a way might inadvertently stop new players from trying it out, due to how un-solo it might appear to those without the experience to know about mercs, camps, etc etc.
    2. The sheer time involved. Even if you fast forward with the hero boost, it will take ages to have an alt catchup to live now. And that's not considering that when you boost it can be daunting to figure out a class and the like. (Personally i think that varies class to class.) But to oldschool it and level up without boosts to current level with all the AA you need, you are talking a lot of time. Longer for someone who has never done it before.
    Just my humble opinion.

    • @georgen5882
      @georgen5882 ปีที่แล้ว +1

With the advent of mercs and the quest system now, plus hot zones, it's easier to level. But if you start playing today and want to be in a top tier raid guild within two years you are out of your mind. Those guys have tens of thousands of AA at this point and you are a literal decade or two behind them. I'm sure it can be done, but the amount of time and effort it would take to get there would be equivalent to a full time job or more. I may be wrong, but when I last played probably a decade or so ago people already had 8-10k AA that were playing high end content. But I agree, I think the time involved to do that would be astronomical and people are more likely to just play something like Elden Ring 17 times instead.

I also like soloing in online games, including Everquest, but I have learned that there is a reason they aren't solo friendly. (Game Design of course) Second, who cares if you take forever to level, it's not about the ending/end game, it's about the journey and the friends you make along the way. That was the true original purpose of MMOs, they just made them easy so people can play solo for more sales
