    How these ships pass any sort of seaworthy test is beyond me!!

    • @michaelweeks4622
      @michaelweeks4622 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those ships are extremely well managed and seaworthy, hence the "Norwegian" in Norwegian Cruise lines, who invented all the navigation techniques we now use (Vikings). Practically every ship in the world, which isn't American, has Norwegian Officers. The ship was obviously more seaworthy than the other vessel. Just silly remarks.

    • @michaelweeks4622
      @michaelweeks4622 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolute rubbish, WHY, a naval architect you ain't sir, and I am guessing by the picture you may be a Master, well I'm an Unlimited Master, Consultant and Expert Witness and I wonder why you are opining without representing factual information?
      First, why would I compare a Cruise Ship to an Ocean Liner, they serve different functions? Should I compare a Sea Going Barge to am Inland Chemical Barge, No. And by the way, the Queen Mary, one of the best built ocean liners ever, a model of stability, had the habit of rolling badly and 45% was once recorded. You don't see cruise ships doing that. Nope. Why?
      Ship stability is dependent not on the height of the vessel or air draft, but on the position of the centre of gravity/Meta-center.
      The superstructure of the ship is built with heaver materials such as steel and the upper sections with lighter material such as aluminum and as a consequence the ships stability due to height is not compromised as long as the major weights are contained low down, which they are, including storage.
      Also, the increasing beam is a more effective way to increase the initial stability of the vessel than increasing draft. If you laid them on their sides, they would pop upright like a ‘weeble’.
      Cruise Ships still must pass all the same ABS, US CG, tests etc etc.
      Last but not least, your comment about the waves is comical. The superstructe isn't compromised by it's design, or by being wider, it still must meet the same flex and failure guidlines, having a safety factor of 3 or better. I do work for many major maritime insurance carriers and we simply wouldn't write the policy on a cruise ship unless we were present during construction and during these tests. Those are facts.
      Now wind is a fact... But not while moving at which time stabilizers are deployed.
      That's what sailing plans are for too.
      And Plimsoll Markings for Dummies..

      “Now there you go again…” Are you 15 years old? Perhaps your mommy didn’t hug you enough coming up. I understand that you want your opinion to count, as everyone wants to be a star in this digital age, but really come on… You don’t see me commenting on the Airbus A321 being a box of bricks, or how the Boeing 747 is far superior; no not me, and why? Because it’s not my place to speak outside my expertise or represent myself as an expert and offer opinions which throw pie and spread misinformation. Children typically grow out of this behavior in their early 20’s; reasonable people just don’t do these things, but I digress, and so onto rebut.
      You state you are no “Naval architect” and you “just have a deep interest in shipping and maritime history” is a poor attempt to prequalify your future argument, or mask your lack of knowledge by stating a truth before an untruth. You say you like history, so I will qualify, as this logic goes back to Aristotle’s definition of truth (Metaphysics 1011b25): “To say of what is that it is not, or of what is not that it is, is false.” Restated, saying something of something, to reality, or what is, has no bearing as the ‘what is’ relation is not made very explicit, and there is no specification of what on the part of reality is responsible for the truth of your saying. Simply put (A is true but has no bearing on B) (B is stated to be true, we are lead to believe the truth is supported by A, but there is no relation, thus the statement is untrue.) But we knew this. I just wanted you to know I knew why you worded it this way. So there is a bit of History you can actually use in the future for your empty note books.
      You state “And to ME a seaworthy ship is a ship that can handle almost every weather conditions on the big seas (oceans). First, to has no bearing on this argument; why inject youself into what should be an examination of the facts. Why are you using the word ‘Seaworthy’ if you do not know what it actually means? The fact that you said “to ME” absolutely means, beyond a doubt, that you pulled your definition of seaworthiness out of a magic hat along with a rabbit or two. The actual definition is: “TO CONSTITUTE SEAWORTHINESS A VESSEL, INCLUDING HER CREW AND APPURTENANCES, MUST BE REASONABLY SAFE TO USE AND PERFORM HER ASSIGNED TASKS. STATED ANOTHER SIMPLER WAY, TO BE SEAWORTHY, A VESSEL MUST BE REASONABLY FIT FOR HER INTENDED PURPOSE.” Intended Service is what you do not understand when you use the term seaworthy; perhaps it’s time to stop watching the History Channel and do your homework.
      OK, no you state you know this, but what “them” are you referring to when you state “she’s seaworthy enough for them,” because this isn’t factual again, the fact of the matter is “SHE IS SEAWORTHY” and there is no other way to see it; your opinion cannot change this, so keep personal feelings out of it and stop using language you do not grasp. I am glad you’re good at physics, although we couldn’t tell by your earlier comments.
      In your Queen Victoria Winter North Atlantic (WNA) example you miss the mark with your argument once again at first but then catch up, a little, when you speak about the bow. The fact of the matter is the vessel made it safely into port, as unpleasant as it may have been, a landing you can walk away from is a safe landing and it met the definition of seaworthiness, as the captain and her crew were obviously well trained in handling the situation. Keep in mind this is the WNA, the worst seas not counting the horn, and an isolated incident which was caused not by an unseaworthy vessel, but rather by bad planning. Your argument doesn’t not even have a bearing but is rather defeated with regard to this particular matter as seaworthiness was not a contributing factor; instead it was the seaworthiness of the vessel that ensured they made it into port. How silly are you attempting to draw yet another misunderstood conclusion. I say kudos to the owners and the crew of this ship.
      You fail miserably to meet your burden of proof so to speak once again in your ‘seaworthy’ argument concerning the Anthem and her February voyage, where they were caught by a storm which moved faster than expected. Once again the vessel was seaworthy, as it IS designed to withstand more extreme circumstances than what it encounter, and once again the highly trained Captain and crew made all the right decisions and not one person was seriously injured, and were all returned safely to port to disembark. Kudos again.
      I must now ask you, do you live in a bubble? When you stub your tow you must proclaim your toe to be defective, no? If you ride in a plane and turbulence ensues, do you call the plane unfit for service? If the rubber ducky you bath withes ‘squeaky valve’ got wet and stopped working for a moment, would you call mommy and tell her it’s an un-bath-worthy ducky? Shit happens…
      I hate to say it, but there are extra life boats too, and they are not stowed as you say, don’t misstate yet another fact, do the research.
      Ok… Enough of you’re buzzing like a little fly, I shall not respond to any more of your silly remarks. Two quotes to leave you with:
      “YOU LOSE, GOOD DAY SIR..” ~ Gene Wilder - Willie Wonka
      “ NOW GO-EWAY BEFORRE I TAUUNT YOU A SEECOND-D TIME!” ~ John Cleese, MP Holy Grail

    A Prime example of several issue. The Master of the Small Vessel which was shoved under A. Failed to maintain a proper look out ensuring the safety of his vessel, but rather left his vessel unmanned; B. failed to properly Moore his vessel; and C. Failed to keep his vessel Staunch, Tight and at All Times Seaworthy, as hatches or windows were obviously open, causing the vessel to take on water, when it should have bounced like a cork.A futile argument could be made alleging the ship is responsible for it's wake, but it could only navigate within this narrow channel, and the small vessel Master should have known this may be an issue.

      All ocean liners were not so fast, only the largest and most famous. But they were still streamlined to go through the waves to make their journeys smooth and comfortable. A Cruise ship will more like bump against big waves. That's not only uncomfortable but it could also be dangerous. Modern cruise ships just don't look very seaworthy, to me they look like towns on self-propelled barges.

Well, now they just try to get so much internal volume as possible to every pound of steel they use. That's why these ships almost look like square boxes. They would be if they wouldn't have to think about the hydrodynamics and still try to give these ships some kind of style.

      @B K After adjusting to a solitary lifestyle, where you only interact with others in a manner that a client would interact with a service provider or a merchant for awhile, it becomes an addiction. It becomes very easy to live without friends and a mate. Humans just are not the positive influence they used to be. Out of every one positive person there is, there is likely 1000 to 2000 negative people. Why dredge through all those negative people looking for a victim to find just one good person. We would be putting ourselves at an extreme risk. It is better just to be solitary.

      Almost certainly the channel is maintained by people for this purpose. The edges have stone or concrete to help maintain the shore. Wow......did the cavitation of the water caused by the liners maneuvering thrusters reduce the buoyancy of the water
    and cause the small boat to slip under temporarily?
    I have read theories how massive release of air bubbles from the sea floor could be cause of some ships
    in the so called Bermuda Triangle. So many bubbles alter buoyancy of floating ships and the sink rapidly apparently.

    • @ewelinanajgebauer8862

  • @mattharte7334
    @mattharte7334 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don’t think the tug was overwhelmed by the size of the sea, or the height of waves caused by the ship. To me it looked more like the power of the ship’s thrusters aerated the water to such an extent it lead to a lack of buoyancy (defeating Archimedes' principle). Good shot by the guy on the quay to get another line onto the tug!

    • @diederikvandedijk
      @diederikvandedijk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it's the waterflow. Tugs don't handle going sideways very well. It's called tripping or girding.

    • @mattharte7334
      @mattharte7334 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@diederikvandedijk I disagree. Girding happens when a tug is attached by a towing line to the ship, it is the capsizing moment when the tug is pulled over by the ship with the ship turning, independently and too quickly away from the tug. In this video you can see the tug is moored, safely, in shallower water to a pontoon and is not attached to the ship. The height of the ship’s wash is not sufficient to cause a problem for the tug. The moored tug gets into trouble when the ship’s propulsion aerates the shallower water, reducing the water’s density and therefore the tug’s buoyancy.

    • @diederikvandedijk
      @diederikvandedijk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattharte7334 It happens when a tug is pulled sideways through the water. In this case the water goes sideways under the tug, witch is effectively the same thing.
