My wife and I were on our honeymoon driving through Georgia (1971) . It was raining and this song came on the radio and has been our song ever since. My wife has passed now, but this song always brinks me back to sad and happy memories. Thank You Brook Benton
There was a guy in my company in the Nam named Stan Crawford. He was a Huey Crew Chief like me. He was from Compton, CA and black. I'm from Houston and white. This was Stan's favorite song...he went around singing it all the time. And, he was pretty good at it too. He and his gunner died when their ship went down in the Mekong River. He was my friend and my brother... who died way too soon. Every time I hear Brook Benton sing this...I think of Stan and miss him again.
Too many. And then there are those who came home, but never left the jungles of Nam. My heart breaks for you and your loss and nothing I say here is ever going to make it better. But thank you for your service and WELCOME HOME SOLDIER.
I back up Brook as his drummer in 1980 for six months and got to know him. In addition to being one of the greatest R and B singers of his time, he was an honest and wonderful person. This clip moved me and I thank the poster. I was surprised at how many famous vocalists I had performed with since were influenced by him. I miss him.
Tom Mendola - glad to hear that other vocalists have spoken of being influenced by him. It seems his name is one that is rarely mentioned, and his voice was outstanding!
