I dated a guy like this. He would take 2 hr lunch breaks at the casino every day, drove a banged up bomby car, would drive up n down till he got a free carpark, wore leather jackets, would have me and him with sit on the machines with a bucket of $200 coins each, asked me to fly to Melbourne and spend $10000 of his money on these two machines all expenses paid and he slept in a empty flat with one chair, single bed and a tv. Gambled in the vip room every night. Just awful!
My hunt for this episode ended with George Hunt (O.P.). INTERESTING TRIVIA (of my own awareness and discovery): Buddy was played by Robert Alda who, two years later, guested on a DIFFERENT sitcom - ' The Facts of Life' - where he ALSO played a compulsive gambler. Further coincidental is the fact that character actor John Lawlor was in BOTH episodes, being a regular cast member of both shows (playing Leonard on 'Phyllis' and the Headmaster on 'FOL').
I don't know why the second year of the show went far downhill - the first year was not as good or interesting or funny as the second. The move to the city council office was a great move, IMO.
Mother Dexter unfortunately died this season of a heart attack although she filmed a couple more episodes after this one before she died. This was also the year Mary Tyler Moore ended.
Cloris was just an incredible actress - she could go from comedic to dramatic in a heartbeat. Phyllis was not nearly as funny without Mary and Rhoda alongside of her. The zany, often-neurotic Phyllis was just not as good on her own.
Allen Aldas dad (Hawkeye)

"Democracy in action!" If only they had known then! ;)
We live in a constitutional Republic, not a democracy.
It was his own fault he lost. Gambling is stupid, just stupid.
