GREAT VID ANDREW...SULLY ERNA ACTUALLY PLAYED DRUMS AND SANG ON GODSMACKS FIRST ALBUM. IVE SEEN THEM 3 TIMES OVER THE YRS, INCLUDING WOODSTOCK 99 WHICH IS ALL OVER YT....GODSMACK HAS GROOVE FOR DAYS.. WOW WHAT A WAY TO START A DAY...THX MAN...PEACE FROM THE NORTHEAST....BTW IT WAS RUSH YYZ THAT YOU HEARD IN THERE.THX
@Andrew Rooney Drums The singer Skully playing the bongos,at the beginning of the battle, along with there main drummer (☺He's great but i forgot his name?) 1st song was,"YYZ by Neil Peart that you said sounds familiar!" And they had Tom Sawyers by Neil Peart at the end! Love Neil Peart and RUSH!
Sully Erna, real name Salvatore Paul Erna Jr. (lead singer on hand percussion) and Shannon Larkin (drummer) shredding up the rest of it. Freaking amazing is it not? Finished off with some Rush YYZ and some Tom Sawyer.
My daughter and I got to hang out with Sully in Reno, NV, for a few hours leading up to their show about 10 years ago. He and his daughter were at a place inside the Grand Seirra Resort called Fun Quest, and both our daughters had a blast playing together! I'm telling you, he's the most down to earth dude you could possibly meet. We talked drums, guitar amps, life on the road, new ideas for the next album, on and on. Even shared some pizza and sodas from the Round Table pizza next door. Then we got to see him rock out with Godsmack a couple hours later, it was an epic show!
Salvatore (Sully) Erna is an Italian-American multi instrumentalist (Guitar, Bass, Keyboards, Drums and Percussion) who started as a drummer before becomming a lead vocalist. He is also an amazing singer-song writer.
Sully definitely is the lead singer and was playing the hand percussion. He's 💯 Boston born and raised, just a well rounded percussionist! Always enjoy some Godsmack! Shannon definitely has earned the nickname"Animal"(from The Muppets) because his style is just like Animal! 🤘🏼🥁🤘🏼
Larkin is a beast. like someone said below - it's still single kick drummer. if you want to check an 'ordinary' playthrough of him? "straight out of line" official video is juz mindblowin, when we're talking around some God's Smacks in drumline...
As a person that has witnessed this twice, I can assure you it is orders of magnitude more impressive live. But lets not forget how awesome Tony's guitar solo is during this show's era.

Late to the party... I was at this show and nearly lost my mind when Sully appeared! It blew me away and I knew I hadta buy the DVD when it came out. Still got it with the receipt tucked in the jacket. The entire film is a mix of behind the scenes as well as the live show. I highly recommend you buy this and have a look, if you haven't already. ✌️😎🇺🇸

@@AndrewRooneyDrums I'm sure you've gotten comments saying that Neil Peart was "your favorite drummer's favorite drummer". You can tell the influence of Neil and Rush at the end when Sully and Shannon started their covers section with YYZ and ended it with Tom Sawyer. That's exactly what people mean when they make that comment.
I’ve been a fan of Godsmack for years but had not seen them in concert. Was supposed to go last year and backed out. Saw them last week and this drum battle blew me out of the water! After the battle they continue with a medley of songs- the transitions were seamless. I have tickets to see them in august and told my wife from now on if they are nearby we are going.
I've seen this solo several times at their concerts and it never disappoints. and yes, the bongo player is the singer. The part where you mentioned it sounded familiar was YYZ by Rush.
This drum battle will go down as the best ever and I must admit I’ve listened to it probably 100 times and still can’t get enough. Love it! Seeing Godsmack live is definitely on my bucket list.
I saw this live as it was filmed at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania [then called Wachovia Arena] - still one of the best concerts I ever attended
This was also my first time seeing this drum battle, and what a treat it was! I've been a casual fan of Godsmack since 98/99, and I've kept up with them casually throughout the years, but I had no idea these kind of shenanigans were going on at shows! What a kick ass performance!
I saw Godsmack open for Metallica as well and the drum solo was insane. Shannon is tall and has long arms so he absolutely crushes the kit. Sully was originally a drummer who worships at the altar of Neil Peart. Hence the YYZ and Tom Sawyer snippets. They are also Boston guys so that’s why the Aerosmith got dropped in. All in all, this was a great solo not just because the drumming is insane, but I loved how the band was incorporated throughout.
What many don't recognize is the fact, this whole sequence was inspired by the band's love of Metallica, and the drum battle between James and Lars from the 1990's San Diego concert from Live Shit: Binge and Purge. Not as a ripoff or some shit like that, but as a love letter tribute. Hence, the incorporation of a few Metallica riffs there at the end of the sequence, along with Walk This Way, and a few other nods. Unless the video was taken down by TH-cam due to copyright (likely), you might still find a behind the scenes video out there with Sully and Larkin building and practicing the sequence, and the band jamming on a few different song ideas to slip in at various points. Nearly every time they performed this live, they would change up which riffs they would use night to night. Dammit I love these dudes. It is really goona be heartbreaking to see the close of this band in the next couple years. Sure hope I finally get the chance to see them live before the end.
Godsmack is my all time favorite band. I saw them twice in Indiana & the drum battle was my favorite part of the concert. Sully & Shannon are so very talented. I would LOVE to see them again. Keep rocking guys!! 🤘
One of the times that I saw it they flipped the drum sticks in the air to each other without missing a beat. I’ve seen them more times than I can remember, one of my favorite live shows so close musically to the album version. Very impressive.
I took my now-wife to a Godsmack concert on our first date. I’d seen them before but it was her first time. I’ll never forget before the show, during sound check, she turns to me and goes “why do I hear them testing out a drum kit? There’s no one sitting at the drums!” “Oh just you wait…” her mind was blown when they performed this! It made me so happy watching your reaction to take me back to that feeling of seeing someone experience this for the first time Our daughter is taking a liking to percussion and I can’t wait until she’s old enough for concerts, I hope Godsmack is still touring by then to see her reaction to this battle. Never fails every time I see this it gives me the chills... When I was younger I studied this for several weeks learning how to play this. Bleeding fingers and hands but eventually got it. 🤘🤘
Saw this drum battle three times: 1 in 2015 and 2 times in 2019. They changed it here and there from album to album. I recommend searching a live drum battle from 2019, where they use a part from "Enter Sandman". These dudes rock and as a drummer, this is the most anticipated moment for me from their show!
I Love how at the end they play Neil Peart's very recognizable Drumming at the end ((when you said that sounds familiar, was Neil Peart's YYZ 1ST,AND Neil Pearts Tom Sawyer the last one!))
I’m glad you watched this. As good as this is on video it’s soo much better live! I saw this show in Houston back in 2017 and it blew my mind. This was my first Godsmack show and they didn’t disappoint!
I really think this DVD was the best live show i've seen in my youth - all musicians were amazing at the moment, not only drums. And this part of it just crushed into my mind, thats the best doube drum perfomance i know.
Personally I have always loathed dual drum solos for many reasons. This is not only well worked out and includes the band instead of just being about showing off but this also shows a great amount of thought into what will work in a live setting. There syncing is unbelievable. Not many examples of this type of 'drum battle'
you must not know much about godsmack then. ive been listening since the blew up the stage on ozzfest 99 and woodstock 99. they have been doing the dual drum thing since 2002/03 when i first saw them
Imagine going to this concert.. with a drummer friend, and they bust this out on you outta nowhere. I've seen them and hung out with them. They are some of genuinely nicest and coolest people I've met. This was by far one of the most epic things I've ever seen live. Godsmack is an experience like no other. A must see.
Absolutely fantastic!!! I love Sully and Godsmack!! I love the drums Soo very much!! One of my favorite bands, love Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd and Metallica and Pearl Jam and Godsmack!! Thank you for sharing this awesome video!! 🥁😊💓🤘✌️🔥
If I remember Sully's biography correctly, he started as a drummer waaaay back in the day as a kid. He disliked sheet music and learned/played by ear and got some success with his band Strip Mind. I believe it was with Godsmack that he took the step forward to be front and center with the vocals. So yeah, Sully can drum too
i was in middle school when they blew up after ozzfest. it was pretty common knowledge that sully was a drummer before being the front man for godsmack. how old are you?
@@travisprugh6347 I'm 32. My first taste of Godsmack was I Stand Alone through The Scorpion King back in 2002. I had that song on my MP3 player for 2-ish years when Prince of Persia: Warrior Within came out in late 2004. Looked up some more Godsmack after that and it quickly became a staple band on my various music players 🤟 Sully's biography was a good and fun read when it came out 😂
Bought this dvd when I was a teen just to watch Shannon play. When I was younger Morgan Rose, Shannon Larkin and Joey were by far my favorite drummers.
First cover song was YYZ by Rush. This unfortunately doesn't really highlight Shannon Larkin's cool playstyle. I encourage you to watch just him as the drummer. Honestly, the entire Changes DVD is a Hell of a concert and they give Shannon the most camera coverage. Dude is a rockstar performer.
@@graxy_tv aaaand he played with the Md band Wrathchild America before UKJ. There’s old footage of Sully hanging with Shannon & Wrathchild somewhere in the 80s
I have this love/hate relationship with Godsmack in the way that they write the most generic tough guy rock, but they’ll turn around and the bassist, guitarist, drummer and singer are all ridiculously skilled as musicians.
Sully came out playing the bongos, Shannon is the short hair skinny dude on the drums. Fun fact Sully was originally a drummer, and he’s a damn good drummer, which I believe makes him a much better front man and guitarist too. This is legendary and I got to see them battle live like this, was just insane to watch
First saw them and a concert in Kansas City, touring with Motley Crue's "Crue Fest" and from the first note when they started I was hooked and they have never disappointed. Great Band and one of the BEST out there!
Godsmack is one of a few bands that sound just as good or better live. Great band. Watch a evening with godsmack live at the house of blues. It will blow your mind
Your cutaways a funny as hell! It’s amazing to see this video now. Sully and shannon have been doing this style battle for at least 20 years and they are so locked in the pocket so tight. I have seen them do it on stage 3 times. The energy in the room is minding blowing.
To me this is what "getting famous" is all about. It's not about the money, or the fans. It's the fact that it facilitates you to be able to do crazy creative stuff like this.
I saw them do this live and was blown away, i had begged my music teacher to let us do this in concert but he couldnt vision what i was talking about. I ran into him at a marching contest a fews years later and he brought up that he had seem this footage, and agreed it would have killed.
This is literally my favourite reaction video of all time! I’ve watched this battle video more times than I can count….Your face did exactly what my face did the first time I heard it. Shannon Larkin reminds me of Animal from the muppets. They’re both absolute beasts on the drums! Did you notice the ode to Rush at the end?
As a Godsmack fan (who has never seen them live unfortunately) but have watched this drum battle countless of times, it was great to see your reaction this this masterpiece.
First saw this drum battle years ago and it made me have so much more respect for Godsmack as a band as a whole. Side note: Shannon got the spot in the band because Sully said they drummed the same way/had the same sound.
Shannon Larkin is a absolute monster. He has some of the longest arms (next to Tommy Lee) which gives his visual style mad punch when you see him live. Some of the coolest drummers to see live are Tommy-Shannon and the mighty Morgan Rose.
One of the greatest, most entertaining, drum solos of all time. I saw this a while back and was so blown away by it, I watched every video I could find of Godsmack, especially the in-concert drum duels. Simply amazing! I almost can't watch any other drum solos now because they seem boring in comparison. Some may drum faster, but the rhythms and sounds are trite and tedious. I really hope to see them live, mainly to see the drum duel. I have found a few videos of relatively young, barely known drummers that have floored me as well, but I can't remember their names. Just look up "Greatest" or "Awesome" drum solos and you can find them. Also, try "Youngest". Kids today....WOW! Going where no drummer has gone before. I love it!
Sully Erna (who had the bongos on his kit) is indeed the singer, on their first self released album he was also the band's drummer. They brought on Shannon Larkin in 2000, and he's one of the most amazing drummers I've ever seen, a huge influence on how I play. Probably one of the most talented drummers in the Nu Metal scene, right up there with Joey Jordinson. You should absolutely check out more of his playing.
Massachusetts native here 👋🏻! Die hard fan since they released their first single in ‘98. They are from Lawrence, Ma which is just north of Boston. Sully is Italian descent. He’s played the drums since he was 3 years old. They almost always do “Walk this way” in their drum battle as an ode to Aerosmith (also from Boston), then they throw in another this time was Led Zeppelin, when I saw them this past summer in Boston they did Metallica… my husband saw them when they toured with Metallica back in ‘08 and I believe Sully did a drum battle with Lars Ulrich. They’ve recorded a great cover of “Nothing Else Matters” and also “Good Times, Bad Times” (and I personally love their cover of “Come Together”. Godsmack is amazing! Shannon Larkin is a beast on drums! My son wanted an electric guitar so bad, so I bought him one… then he saw them with me this past summer and was amazed with Shannon and is now all about the drums. Godsmack is simply amazing and so full of talent. They care about their fans as well. They have also founded The Scars Foundation for mental health awareness and resources to find help. 💜 And Sully did a podcast on TH-cam during the Covid lockdown in 2020, it’s called Hometown Sessions if your interested on learning about him on a more personal level.
I knew a kid like this too in HS, introduced himself in 9th with “my names Joey, and im gonna be a rock star” and sure as shit he’s actually doing well in a musical career.
Godsmack is just an awesome live show. Just one of the last rock star types. I don’t even like the band and I count it as among my fave live shows ever
I requested this about a week ago and BAM!!! I never thought it would ever show up in the rotation so soon!!! Thanks soooooooooo much Mr. Rooney! I was nervous that you might not like the request but I was wrong.. You are simply the best my friend!! You're my best friend! LOL.. Sully Erna is 100% Italian and started out his career as a drummer and played all the drums on Godsmacks debut album.
Your reaction at 6:15 when they both go to kits, the best. I've seen this in person multiple times and it destroys each time. Love your videos, keep them coming, please!!!
I got the chance to see this drum battle and the guys back in 2015 for my bday and I'm happy I got to experience that! I remember seeing videos on it on TH-cam of this drum battle and it took me by surprise and my life flashed before my eyes because I got to see something so cool!

Ive seen this played live in orlando florida and the power that they produced live was absolutely astonishing
Totally blew my mind Alex. Amazing 🥁🙌
One could argue that this was a duet as much as it was a battle.
Absolutely correct
Personally I have always loathed dual drum solos for many reasons. This is not only well worked out and includes the band instead of just being about showing off but this also shows a great amount of thought into what will work in a live setting. There syncing is unbelievable. Not many examples of this type of 'drum battle'

This...👆
you must not know much about godsmack then. ive been listening since the blew up the stage on ozzfest 99 and woodstock 99. they have been doing the dual drum thing since 2002/03 when i first saw them
That's what i call "Bang for your buck!" Who ever got to witness this live had their ears blessed! 🔥😆🔥
I've seen this live once and it was just as good as the video. They kill it everytime.
Yes...when I saw them live it was just as awesome too!🌹

Thanks Laura! 🙏🥁
Im from Massachusetts and have seen them live a few times and this is always the best part of the show for me!!
If I remember Sully's biography correctly, he started as a drummer waaaay back in the day as a kid. He disliked sheet music and learned/played by ear and got some success with his band Strip Mind. I believe it was with Godsmack that he took the step forward to be front and center with the vocals.
So yeah, Sully can drum too
He sure can Robin! Killed it
i was in middle school when they blew up after ozzfest. it was pretty common knowledge that sully was a drummer before being the front man for godsmack. how old are you?
@@travisprugh6347 I'm 32. My first taste of Godsmack was I Stand Alone through The Scorpion King back in 2002. I had that song on my MP3 player for 2-ish years when Prince of Persia: Warrior Within came out in late 2004.
Looked up some more Godsmack after that and it quickly became a staple band on my various music players 🤟 Sully's biography was a good and fun read when it came out 😂
IIRC people in his circle initially laughed when he said he would be doing the vocals
Saw these guys twice, and always a drum battle, and always amazing
Unreal Dave!
Bought this dvd when I was a teen just to watch Shannon play. When I was younger Morgan Rose, Shannon Larkin and Joey were by far my favorite drummers.
if you have time check my drum covers thanks
Morgan Rose is one of my drumming idols. What a beast. And definitely Joey and Shannan
I had the pleasure to see this live and I had no clue at the time Sully was a drummer. WOW I did not expect that and it blew my mind!
Man I'd love to see this live. Unbelievable
Also, fun fact. Shannon Larkin was the drummer for Ugly Kid Joe for anyone who wants to feel old today.
if you have time check my drum covers
Yup. Started it with rush YYZ, Aerosmith, zeppelin, and back to Rush with Tom Sawyer. Sulley and Larkin are big fans of the late Neil Peart from rush
Technically, didn't the whole thing start off with a loose cover of Korn's song Got Life? That's what I hear but I could be wrong.
@@graxy_tv aaaand he played with the Md band Wrathchild America before UKJ. There’s old footage of Sully hanging with Shannon & Wrathchild somewhere in the 80s
Godsmack is AMAZING live! Imagine seeing this in person, it's an awesome experience
I bet!
Used to walk in Tower Record and listened to 'The Other side' CD. I bought the album, really love the vibe and orchestration of this acoustic album.

This "song" or "drum battle" is still to this day one of my absolute favorites. I literally listen to this as a song quite often! I love Godsmack! 🤘
Awesome Cody!
I have this love/hate relationship with Godsmack in the way that they write the most generic tough guy rock, but they’ll turn around and the bassist, guitarist, drummer and singer are all ridiculously skilled as musicians.
It's like mid-2000s garage rock, from talented musicians lol
I loved seeing this live ♡ always amazing!

It's great live! They just knock it out of the park EVERY time! One of my fav bands!
Godsmacks so good live!! Shannon Larkins a straight beast!!!

First saw them and a concert in Kansas City, touring with Motley Crue's "Crue Fest" and from the first note when they started I was hooked and they have never disappointed. Great Band and one of the BEST out there!
Great stuff Chris. This is mind blowing
Godsmack is one of a few bands that sound just as good or better live. Great band. Watch a evening with godsmack live at the house of blues. It will blow your mind
I will 👌
Your cutaways a funny as hell!
It’s amazing to see this video now. Sully and shannon have been doing this style battle for at least 20 years and they are so locked in the pocket so tight. I have seen them do it on stage 3 times. The energy in the room is minding blowing.
Sully played drums on the first two Godsmack albums. YYZ is the song that sounded familiar to you.

And 2112 ending.... 'attention all planets of the solar federation... we have consumed caffeine.. we have consumed caffeine...' :)
To me this is what "getting famous" is all about. It's not about the money, or the fans. It's the fact that it facilitates you to be able to do crazy creative stuff like this.
Great comment Ross! Love it
I saw them do this live and was blown away, i had begged my music teacher to let us do this in concert but he couldnt vision what i was talking about. I ran into him at a marching contest a fews years later and he brought up that he had seem this footage, and agreed it would have killed.
Need 2 very good drummers to make it work. Would have been awesome Philip
Thank you Kelly!!!
I need a few more listens to call Rush tunes :) Although I DID recognize it!!!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums would you do some tool and avenged sevenfold? Danny Carey and the Rev are my GOATS
I said the exact same thing about Shannon acting like animal from the muppets. The best drummer ever!
As a Godsmack fan (who has never seen them live unfortunately) but have watched this drum battle countless of times, it was great to see your reaction this this masterpiece.
Thanks Joey!
I loved it bro. Mind blown
First saw this drum battle years ago and it made me have so much more respect for Godsmack as a band as a whole.
Side note: Shannon got the spot in the band because Sully said they drummed the same way/had the same sound.
if you have time check my drum covers thanks
Sully based his playing style on Shannon's after they met when Sully was still a full time drummer years before the formation of Godsmack
I saw them do this live back when they opened for Metallica in 2008. It was beyond epic to see it live!!!
Shannon Larkin is a absolute monster. He has some of the longest arms (next to Tommy Lee) which gives his visual style mad punch when you see him live. Some of the coolest drummers to see live are Tommy-Shannon and the mighty Morgan Rose.
Roy Mayorga from Stone Sour is also pretty crazy
You gotta give Tommy Lee props for that. He isn't technically great, but he puts on a hell of a show.

What's really impressive about Shannon Larkin is that he's a single kick guy.
He does doubles, thanks to his time in Amen.
Single kick drum, double pedals
Yeah I'm gonna have to agree with your point. Watching him play is an absolute joy.

He did lots of double bass in Wrathchild America.
I have seen this live a few times and it never gets old. Sully also has a couple solo projects that are wonderful too.
Soon as you hear Sully sing you would recognize the band.
I’m sure you are right 👌

Wow! Thanks for all that great info Katie
My very first concert was Godsmack and Metallica when I was 9. Kinda ruined all other concerts after that😂
Oh wow! HAHA
Seen this live several times. Mind blowingly awesome.
Sully Erna (Frontman/Hand percussion guy) is a **HUGE** RUSH fan and was quite friendly with Neil Peart.
Shouldn't be a surprise.
Wow. Awesome Michael 🥁

Got to see their drum battle in Orlando and it was by far the best part of the concert

My ex-girlfriend went to school with Sully. Apparently he knew he was going to be a rock star early on. Dude sure has vision and heaps of talent.

Its amazing how much talent is in the metal scene that most people dont know about.

I requested this about a week ago and BAM!!! I never thought it would ever show up in the rotation so soon!!! Thanks soooooooooo much Mr. Rooney! I was nervous that you might not like the request but I was wrong.. You are simply the best my friend!! You're my best friend! LOL.. Ive seen this drum solo 100 times ....never gets old

@@AndrewRooneyDrums my drummer is on this level but i am the lead singer and cant come close to this on drums so this is out of our reach ....sigh
I respect Sully so much more as a Guitar Player, A drummer and a musician than Dave Grohl
Your reaction at 6:15 when they both go to kits, the best. I've seen this in person multiple times and it destroys each time. Love your videos, keep them coming, please!!!
One of the best drum performances period. It still holds up after all these years
This was stupidly good. Probably one of the best things I've seen on your channel.
I got the chance to see this drum battle and the guys back in 2015 for my bday and I'm happy I got to experience that! I remember seeing videos on it on TH-cam of this drum battle and it took me by surprise and my life flashed before my eyes because I got to see something so cool!
