Do not know why people are surprised one has not heard of George K. There are a gazillion drummers from the jazz world that i do not know. No one is equally invested in everything at the same time. I believe George has stretched it to the extent when it comes to b.p.m. At least of the known drummers out there, ...cause there’s always that one kid out there in someone basement outdoing every known artist. But yeah, George is something of a standard. At least for now.
Been playing with George since 2001 in dark metal band NIGHTFALL. Except one of the best drummers on extreme metal, he is also playing on Jazz/Fusion bands and projects and moreover he is AN EXTREMELY SUPER-COOL PERSON!
Pressure swivel technique no real towed to heal heel to toe movement you have to find a sweet spot on the footboard down till the beater slightly comes back from the head, like twisting the wrist not the arm , some krank up the springs , some have a bounce feel to them ,like when you do double strokes into almost a buzz roll, start slow"" most give up" until they get the motion.of it but to master it fast and consistently, many will never achieve that" finding the balance on your footboard is like finding the balance on your drumstick with two fingers letting the drumstick balance in your finger so you can blast beat without much effort what the drumstick work for you just like the drum pedal
had a chance to see him live with Nile a few years back, one of his kick pedals broke during the show. He played the rest of the show with one pedal like a champ, I couldn't hear the difference!
George once told me that his doctor had told him that the swivel technique could damage his knees. I hope you are well George. The beast's knees are not hurting!!!
This is his solo album, in which he plays every instrument. But he is also the DRUMMER of NILE. And that BAND is one of the most brutal and unique in the DEATH METAL scene. He is playing on the last six albums for the Band. Every album from that band is AWESOME. \m/
I have a pair of George's signature axis pedals and I actually had him sign the pedal for me at a nile show. He noticed I put skateboard grip tape on my pedal board and casually mentioned that he would probably grind his feet off if he had something abrasive on his pedals because of his foot technique XD
If you love watching drummers switching hand during blastbeats, you need to check David Diepold, especially his Cryptosy's drum cover or kingborn from Fleshgod Apocalypse
George is in multiple bands/projects, i went to see his work with band Nile (oriental technical death metal). Band before them ended and people in the venue all went outside for a smoke and drink. I was about to leave the venue, when this guy went out of backstage and started to tune the drum kit and volume levels. So i turned back and just listened...
fun fact: when he plays the blast beat with his right hand on the snare it's not a single stroke roll, but snare and cymbal in unison. With the double kicks luike that it's called a "bomb blast"
I saw Nile live 11 years ago, and it remains one of my favorite live shows ever. They're nowhere near my favorite band (I'm not really a big tech death guy), but they just had a damn good time with a fair amount of variety by genre standards... and of course, George Kollias was a big part of what made that show special.
7:01 he is changing hands cause he's playing a hammerblast, which is in contrast to the traditional blast easier to be played with the lead hand on the snare.
Isnt it cool how people are capable of some incrediblly cool sh*t. Pretty sure his reaction is the reaction of us all when we first heard this :D impossible footwork
I don't know why, but this particular video of him didn't have me that impressed. I mean, yeah his blasts are fast as HELL, and the accuracy is definitely nuts... but I don't know, it just didn't do it for me? To me. watching someone like Alex Rudinger is 1000x more entertaining and impressive. I haven't seen many videos of Koliais so maybe this one is just a bad example? I'd like to watch more videos of his to get a better idea. But in my opinion, doing 16th note fills around the snare and two rack toms isn't THAT fun to watch.
@@gamefreak249 100% I really don’t like him that much as far as music goes, but he’s nuts as a drummer. Rudinger, sastry, Troy Wright are my personal favorites
I'm so glad you did a Kollias video he has been my favorite drummer for years. Those single leg blast beats are unreal. This song is off his solo release, to me though his best work is with Nile, check them out if you have time!
You talk about switching hands on blasts and that technique is pretty common (as you can imagine, doing that for a minute straight at a time can get pretty tiring). Martyn Jovanovich (another great youtube drum teacher and former member of a few extreme metal bands himself) even talked about his technique of switching from French grip to German grip alternately every 4 or 8 bars, so he would use different muscles and give the alternating muscle groups a break.
Marthyn released an updated version of Lucifer Incestus....at 270bpm after reworking his hand technique... studio version was around 260 or something.... concerts they dropped to like 250. He even noted lots of drummers who cover the song don't match studio version because they can't handle the massive amounts of snare. (Not saying they suck! I sure can't play....lol)
I remember seeing Nile a couple of years back, and Kollias mixed up the setlist and guitars & bass started one playing one song and he started playing the one after that, and everybody stopped and looked at each other confused, they had a bit of a chat, and the guitarist turned to the audience "Mark this day in your calender, the day that George Kollias fucked up." Apparently, that doesn't happen very often...
With Tony Laureano and Derek Roddy, he is one of the drummers that tremendously elevated the level of Death Metal drumming in the 2000's, even though he came a bit later than the 2 others. Crushing speed and power, with impeccable technique, his drumming is just insane. I know you privilege Patreon picks but a reaction to Kevin Paradis: Sensory Amusia - Pain would be interesting. We can see some flam accents, during blast beats while changing hand. The latest extreme metal drumming video that literally blew my mind.
Kollias is a beast! Because he grooves at insanely high speeds. Went to a clinic of his once, he talked about the swivel "technique" and explained that it was something he just started doing, but it's been taking a toll on his knees, because it really messes with the joints. Don't try and copy the swivel, it's not a technique and it's better to learn to do it without the speed. He practices for hours to do it less. Shame he's too fast for his camera's framerate too. Awesome drummer!

Yeah that always cracks me up. Whoever is forefront in a genre will seem like a household name/player. Not so.
Thanks for understanding Patrick!!!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Cheers mate, ....
Their are plenty of faster drummers out there(not in basements btw, also not kids). George is still a legend though.
If you think Kollias has maxed tempo, you should look up Spencer Prewett from Archspire. He has stuff at 350+
@@Lastshadow94 I know the stuff Spencer does. Yes, he is faster .... in short bursts. Yet, .....
I will stop there......
George’s foot technique is actually incredibly unique. I’ve not seen any other drummers use it. But damn it if it doesn’t work him!
Been playing with George since 2001 in dark metal band NIGHTFALL.
Except one of the best drummers on extreme metal, he is also playing on Jazz/Fusion bands and projects and moreover he is AN EXTREMELY SUPER-COOL PERSON!
Thanks for the info
This video is at least 15 years old
Great reaction to a mind blowing drummer
Thanks Mike!
He melted your face right off!
YUP!
Still the best reaction video from Andrew Rooney. I always come back to this one. 😂
Thanks so much Jess! lol
had a chance to see him live with Nile a few years back, one of his kick pedals broke during the show. He played the rest of the show with one pedal like a champ, I couldn't hear the difference!
You should check out John Longstreth from Origin. Staring from the abyss drum cam is just something else.
Definitely need to cover John Longstreth at some point!
george you are the man, i never heard anything as fast and precise , i thought i was a good double bass drummer, you take it to another level!!!!
He's from my hometown! I've played with 4 of his students, all beasts on the double bass, as expected. They all had only good things to say about him.
I bet!
I love the "YESSS" after he realizes there is more to the song. I agree.
Best drum reacter, best memes, class video pal!
Be that as it may guys like george and derrek roddy are awesome artists expanding this art form.they are legit drummers
George once told me that his doctor had told him that the swivel technique could damage his knees. I hope you are well George. The beast's knees are not hurting!!!
I'm not sure there is a way to play at this speed, constantly touring, and not eventually have health problems.
@@blppt If you can stay loose I think that is possible 😊!But at 240 bpm...?
@@dimitrisgoktsis5702 Kollias has songs where he hits 260bpm with Nile, IIRC.
@@blppt i know my friend.The "240 bpm" it's only an example
This is his solo album, in which he plays every instrument. But he is also the DRUMMER of NILE. And that BAND is one of the most brutal and unique in the DEATH METAL scene. He is playing on the last six albums for the Band. Every album from that band is AWESOME. \m/
I have a pair of George's signature axis pedals and I actually had him sign the pedal for me at a nile show. He noticed I put skateboard grip tape on my pedal board and casually mentioned that he would probably grind his feet off if he had something abrasive on his pedals because of his foot technique XD
Yeah i remember JoJo Mayer saying he used to put coca cola on his pedals to make them slippery
That was unbelievably amazing.... holy crapamoley.... incredible
Ah yes, the "Single Foot God" GK. Give Kollias a single pedal, and he hill play what other 90% of the drummers can play with a double one.
I pretty good on single foot (heal/toe) pulling off "double bass" sounding beats but what he does is pretty freaking amazing!
He uses duals (two beaters/pedal).
@@UltraCasualPenguin Do you even watch his videos? He can reach insane bmp's using only his right foot, hence the nickname...
@@Compendyum Yes, with two beaters per pedal.
Saw him live he dindt make any mistake no rim no stik on stik was f*%^# perfect best drummer i have saw live he is a true beast
If you love watching drummers switching hand during blastbeats, you need to check David Diepold, especially his Cryptosy's drum cover or kingborn from Fleshgod Apocalypse
Thanks Randy!
I second this. David Diepold is wild. He's now Obscura's drummer.
George Kollias is to "Drummer reacts" as Jinjer is to "Vocal Coach reacts".
fun fact: when he plays the blast beat with his right hand on the snare it's not a single stroke roll, but snare and cymbal in unison. With the double kicks luike that it's called a "bomb blast"
U should watch Lars from Metallica just for a laugh
Good ole Lars. Legend!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums in his own right yes but also a disappointment to the drumming community hes just too lazy
Lmao
Hahahahaha noooooo
Slowest thrash drummer in the world!
So not only does he slay the drums but dances at the same time...
7:01 he is changing hands cause he's playing a hammerblast, which is in contrast to the traditional blast easier to be played with the lead hand on the snare.
Proud to be greek 😉 greek gods are 13 plus kollias, happy new year to everyone 😊
He wrote all of this material as well and did all the vocals. It's all his stuff aside from some lead guitars. It's an AMAZING album!
Isnt it cool how people are capable of some incrediblly cool sh*t. Pretty sure his reaction is the reaction of us all when we first heard this :D impossible footwork
Just seeing George's feet makes me laugh. He's so impossibly godly that it makes us mortals laugh
@@ldmb1966 but seeing experienced drummers do the same thing is even funnier :D
Kollias is a colossal talent. Props for not only using kickboxer gifs but a bloodsport one too. Big jcvd fan.
George is an absolute beast!
How about Fransesco Paoli from Fleshgod Apocalypse playing The Violation live?
Aeons of burning galaxies (The drum play through) has always been my favorite of George's
Opinion, the speed doesn’t make him the goat. The power doesn’t make him the goat. The accuracy and precision make him the goat.
I always thought his accuracy and precision was not all that good to be honest
no the goat makes him the goat ://
Yes he's a machine!
Andrew, you go funny when you’ve had lots of coffee! ☕️
HAHA!
@@kevinjfeeney77 That Belphegor album with him is soooo good, I was just blasting that yesterday.
Yeah, George is a speedfreak! 🤯🤘🏻
Be sure to check out anything by David Diepold, he’s crazy as well.
Will do! Love your YT handle by the way :)
Haha! Thanks. 😊 I’m all about the chugs! 😉😬🤘🏻
Love David's cover of Conjuring the Dead!
His right foot is faster than most drummers that use both feet to go over 200 bpm
Yes! Finally! Great reaction! His jazzy stuff is also good, but make sure to check out livesessions from Nile when they play Kafir!, for example.
Thank you!
Andrew I've gotta thank you for moments like 3.05, it's bits like this that make your videos that bit more unique, and they're also funny as fuck. 😂👌
HAHA! Glad you dig it Liam :)
Pretty good how he plays all the instruments in that song. It was a solo album that song was on
The comedic meme timing is on par with Kollias’ timing lol
Elite Meme-ing!
HAHA
Great info!
George a great drummer!
You should check out Pete Sandoval playing in morbid angel!!!
Good point - much of what's going on today would not be so without him he was the turning point in regards to insane footwork
Pete is the og
