- Today I discuss my honest thoughts about wizard101 and the direction of where kingsisle is headed. I expose how much wizard101 has changed overtime, how much the community complains and why kingsisle continues to bite the hand that feeds them. I am not part of the extra credits program so there is no bias to any of the devs. I have no association with any of them. These are my honest thoughts. It's either we change or they will never change.

When kingsisle shuts wizard101 down there will undoubtedly be a wizard101 server relaunched and it will have classic wizard101. Maybe then will we be able to enjoy pvp again.

just so you know the only way that can happen is if KI willingly allows a w101 rewritten to happen. Same thing with TTR, it only exists because disney allowed them to exist. Knowing KI, i honestly dont think theyd allow it.

You popped off. I have played on and off since 2010. I would have never expected KI to become this predatory when it comes to the Crown Shop/Pets or make gear so hard to grind that it's not reasonable for casual players to acquire anymore. If I only have time to run the Nightmare dungeon 3 times a week, that's over 2 months just to add 3 damage and 2 pierce to my character's stats. The only reason KI is still alive is because early players are now grown up and have jobs to afford to spend crowns.
Yes you worded that amazingly. It is predatory and it has been since the beginning with the crownshop. However the only difference from early days is that we now have too many pay to progress features because everyone has grown up and now able to afford to ‘waste’ their money on it to ‘save’ them time grinding. Little do they know that they contributed to adding MORE pay to progress features XD
The dev team is much smaller then it ever has been. Kingsisle was bought by a different team back in 2021. Yes some of the transactions may be annoying, however it has to be done. Unless you want no more content updates for the game they need to have someway to bring in revenue which is very difficult when you have this small of a player base. Also you quite literally just described every MMO endgame min/maxing. It's almost like the game doesn't force you to min/max your character :0. Honestly when it comes to Wiz too there is barely any reason to min/max your character. There is very little content that requires that bar to complete if you simply have a competent team with good class selections.
@@nightshade622 you’re right. The dev team is small, but they could have hired much more from the $100+ million dollars they were given by MGI acquisition. You are also right that it seems like every MMO does this, however there are loads that are actually free to play. Wizard101 is simply a free trial to complete main game content which is to quest
lmao! its the nightmare dungeon, and it only took me a few days to get all the gear. in what way if KI greedy for money? i don't see it, never had to spend more than the membership fee which is only $10 a month bruh, y'all that broke? i'm playing two characters and i'm homeless! lmao
@@S07L Happy to hear you got lucky with finding a team as well as the drops :) The main issue was that the dungeon takes too long to find a good team that would stay for more than one run, as well as there’s 2 tiers of gear. Warper piece is useless and you’d always trash it. Then you can get ANY school of warper and so as the reaver. At the time you needed to win 25x, now its reduced down to 15x. I had no problems with this dungeon other than the broken dreams, but its not what I think. It’s the experiences of other players that matter. And they all hated this dungeon :)
This video is totally accurate, we are all stuck in a loop, feeding our hard earned money to a greedy company who could give a shit about their community. This game will never feel the way it used to :(

what the hay are you guys talking about? the wiz community is great and the membership is only $10, everything else you can get for free and it only takes a few days to get the full set to any gear that you want. so seriously what's up with you people
I just reinstalled Wizard101 for the 6th time since starting the game in 2008. I was 7 years old when I started. I am now 22 years old. It's the nostalgic part of the game that keeps bringing me back. This game was my childhood. The game hasn't been the same since level 60 was the max. That's when things began to spiral downhill and be too much.

For me, I just want to play the main story and enjoy it for what it is and the in game history around it. I'm not a fan of gear grinding and I feel like that has become mandatory for the main quest.
Yep. Unless you have someone carrying you that is also reading the main quest line then you definitely need some pieces of the gear which requires a bit of farming. Each run of farming takes about 30minutes in the higher levels so I guess you can get by with the storyline dedicating to 3hrs of farming each place :) When finishing the storyline, I hope that you let this game go. Don’t let the devs trap you in with ‘endgame’ content and little updates.
@@TntosionOfficial Trust me, I haven't had a sub in a long time, I've been watching other people play the game to get lore. P101 is still fun to me, its just that it never got updates for the longest time. I'm crossing my fingers it doesn't go down the same route as Wiz in needing to grind for the main story.
@@gaianexv2109 You’re so right. When i played p101 you didn’t really need anything other than a membership. My companions as a witch doctor and musketeer were enough to complete the entire game and farm moo Manchu or skeleton key bosses just fine. You didn’t even need to farm them if you didn’t want to. I essentially let the game go after completion, which I was happy with. Now I need to let w101 go
Honestly, along with ALL RPGs, I like collecting items and crafting ... It's OCD, or something, but I truly enjoy flying around and gathering up everything in sight.
I think Gamigo getting their grubby hands on it was my red line for this game. Especially after watching Josh Strife’s video on Gamigo and learning about their practices of buying up games, milking them, and then shutting them down or putting them on life support when they can no longer turn a profit from them.
I went back to playing Wiz not too long ago and quit after finishing Azteca on my death. (Emily Nightshade) .
KI was greedy and the game was filled with microtransactions before Gamigo, so to blame Gamigo for these problems is wrong
I sometimes want to go back and play wizard101, it's not as fun as it used to be. I was there when we had those school parties; 4v4 pvp was my favorite thing to do in wiz, right now it's non-existent. Every time I log back in wiz all I do is just garden and if we have free membership I just log in to lvl up. I don't see the point in buying a membership when I know I won't be playing constantly. The game go very complicated out of nowhere and it's huge energy trying to figure it out.
I think, for me, a massive thing over the years is that it has felt like Wizard101 has not been the same family-friendly game it once used to be when it first came out. I genuinely miss the early days when there were so many kinder people; now, all I see anymore is an excessive amount of racism and toxicity. Some quests, as an example, have “shut up” in their dialogue and Wizard101 filters it in their chat filter. It may not be a big issue to some, but me personally, has bothered me seeing in multiple quest dialogues.
I remember when a $10 membership or 5,000 Crowns was something so many of us wanted so badly to quest and progress through the game. New mounts were introduced and sold as a single product and not as a “bundle” with an outrageous price tag and other unwanted items. Today, and I agree entirely, it feels like a casino and not nearly as close to a kid's game as it has been marketed since the beginning.
Many of these newer updates feel too difficult or confusing to do, and KingsIsle wanting us to do it a number of times to get a badge feels like a chore. I don't have that kind of time like I used to. I just hope many things change.

I don't think that's the problem. In older days Wiz had a lot more racism and offensive shit to the point where people were dressing up as the KKK and had their own cults in-game. Today you pretty much immediately get muted for whatever bad you write. But I do agree that the community was way better before, but that comes down to people being much younger and much more into roleplay than they are now. Weddings, parties, etc. all made the community but now there is none of that stuff cause people are just grown up and way more serious than they were when they were young.

@@gjbsarmeri3957 If someone intentionally displays abusive, hateful, or offensive content, they do not deserve chat privileges or access to the game-plain and simple. I agree, however, that the chat filter system needs a significant amount of work.
I miss having the level cap be 50. That was the most fun I ever had playing the game. Every school was actually different, milestones really meant something, and there wasn’t so much randomness
If KI wants to add a new gamemode, it REALLY needs a well made tutorial. Even the base game gives you a tutorial that teaches basic skills.
Beastmoon just sort of spews tutorial vomit and throws players in to figure out the game better.
I havent been able to do any raids cause I'm not in a guild, so I dont even know the rules of a raid either.
I tried an advanced fight, and wasn't even told how it works and was destroyed until I found out it has PvP rules. PvP in PvE is annoying because; the difference of PvP banned cards in PvP is to (Supposedly) give players an even playing field in a duel. But with Advanced combat rules, you're already nerfed with enemies that already have an unfair advantage over a player. That's not a test of player skill, it's an annoying grind that forces a player to learn a niche way to play to exploit a boss.
And to this day, there's STILL no basic tutorial on the accuracy stat, so new players get confused when spells fizzle.
If basic, well made tutorials were made for the more niche gamemodes, more people might be more inclined to play them and be less toxic, maybe?
Wizard101 does make you feel like an actual wizard though... In the sense you spend countless hours doing mindless tasks to get better, but if you got the gold, you can enhance your skills even faster!
the community is feels VERY divided when it comes to preferred game difficulty. There's players who enjoy the more challenging aspects of the game (PVP, raids, challenge mode, etc.), while others much prefer your typical "blade, blade, AOE" style of gameplay. When the developers create difficult content casual players become frustrated that the game is becoming too hard & the rewards are too exclusive. When the developers release much more familiar & easy content then hardcore players get upset and call it "stale" and "too easy".
Though both kinds of players can come together to admit that drop rates either way are ATROCIOUSLY low most of the time. If your gonna make long & difficult content.. make it worth the effort. 😔 Its obviously a tactic MMO games use to encourage longer play sessions & to purchase micro transactions.
yeah here's the thing getting gear only takes a day or two at max, a whole set? maybe a week though there isn't anywhere that allows you to get further by choosing to pay instead lmao there is no pay to win unless you want the same gear everyone is already farming for.
I think ppl need to understand what whaling actually is. whaling isn’t buying a few packs or mounts or cosmetics. That’s natural in every video game. But basically farming the crown shop is an issue. I’m guilty of it myself as I wanted spellements that wiz makes it NEAR IMPOSSIBLE to get in game.
Most ppl aren’t even aware that they’re whaling. They feel desperate, they just want that mount or piece of gear or spell. Ofc at the end of the day it’s because the game makes them happy and this would add to their experience in their eyes.
The issue lies with the fact that KI has made it impossible to NOT whale in this game. You want a good aoe that appears more than once in your deck as a life or death wiz under lvl50? Too bad! Gotta pay for those spellements or just have the most exhausting, tooth pulling, brain numbing time questing!
I don’t think wiz is actually in too much danger of shutting down, and I also don’t think it’s solely the whales keeping it alive. Anyone with a membership is lining their pockets monthly to keep the ship afloat.. and well… you literally can’t play without the membership.
I think to fix the overall experience of wiz, people just have to try their hardest NOT to blow too much cash in the crown shop. That way it sees less revenue and wiz feels (hopefully) compelled to make some “crown only” things viable after maybe some tedious grinding.
Saw someone say “it won’t shut down due to lack of real competition” and they’re completely right. It’s got a fun story, charming art style, entertaining dialogue & soundtrack. Something would have to come along with all of those things AND the accessibility (since you could run w101 on a toaster basically), to make people abandon the game.
Great video! I’ve seen lots of people commenting on the state of “pay to play” that wiz has fallen in to. I love the game, it’s fun for me to play after work with my boyfriend to just relax and have fun together.. but this has spiraled out of control and is def an issue that needs to be solved SOON.
You’re so right about the definition of whaling. It is natural to spend at least something on micro transactions as with all MMO games. Unfortunately, we all got trapped into this sinkhole where the game was marketed as free to play. It technically is but to complete the game, it definitely is not the case haha. It’s a free trial for an hour. The game won’t be shutting down anytime soon because there is no need to with zero competition. Although why is there zero competition? Because the game is so small no one needs to compete with it. W101 is in a very interesting position where the small, loyal community continues to feed the hand that bites them as they are unable to see past their nostalgia or addiction. They don’t want to let go, including myself. But as I said, this game wasn’t suppose to last this long and we shouldn’t have played it for this long either.

im max lvl 170 and its so easy to farm things, if you spend allot on crowns thats your own problem, i never need to spend on anything besides the membership which is only $10

I just started playing again last week. This was after at least 10 years on hiatus. I had forgotten my username and password and KI support broke their back helping me get my old account back. I remember when I was young they would do cute videos around Christmas time and I always thought it made them feel special. As for getting back into the game players have been nothing but kind and helpful to me. I can't speak to other people's experiences but I could never hate this game or KI.
Game Died long ago, Darkmoor was the last big hype. When they restricted gear stats, that people worked hard to attain in pvp, pets, gear, etc, even for just practice mode where people were just trying to have fun, that's when I threw in the gloves and came to the bitter reality that this just wasn't Wizard101 anymore. 70 max resist, harder to next to impossible to attain damage stats that were there before, toxic killing of freedom of gear stats, before could never guess what you were facing with so many in school variations, now same few meta builds and speed clicking sweats, just sad.
I only play one month a year. Its nostalgia but its turning out to be bittersweet more often than not.
Your completely right, Memberships should be permanently free because gear is locked behind chests that cost so many Crowns and Crafting it is a pain and the worst is those things need fix too because it'll burn out the players. Great advice!!!
Wizard101 doesn't trend. It's extremely niche too, to the point where ppl who actively support it are in their own vacuum, there own echo chamber. For all their corners cut, that won't stop ppl from buying/playing it and therein lies the problem. KingsIsle knows that if they just weather the storm, they'll come out just fine. The truth of the matter is that, so long as Wizard101 continues to make money hand over fist, they have no reason to change. They don't have to add development time because they have an army of seething, coping simps who will just shout down, harass and threaten and/all critical voices and they'll still make thousands anyway. At that point, adding development time would slow down profits and KingsIsle want their money now and they know that they don't have to produce quality work to get it.

As one of the people in the “echo chamber” really I play it because it’s simple and doesn’t require a lot and I can do other things on the side as well. I mostly login in just to make pets since they’re complicated and don’t require much time once you’re done and I tend to be busy so I don’t have much time to find a new game, plus I like the idea of multitasking. Oh and I don’t tend to waste anymore crowns then I have to as I got all the areas bought.
Edit: Also thanks to Ferric’s server pet making has advanced much much more making a lot less “cancerous”.

you guys are so delusional. wizard101 is only $10 a month which gives you access to everything and you can literally farm for anything you want instead of buying it with crowns. just because a pessimistic video is made doesn't mean its at all accurate bc it isn't. i'm a max wiz lvl 170 and i didnt mind farming for the gear, why should you just be given everything without trying?
@@S07L I feel that you missed the point of the video. That the game is marketed as free to play and is run by a greedy company that does not care about its players. They only exploit whales that will continue to pay for their game that barely get major content updates plus their inability to bug test a lot of things before releasing it into the live realm. It’s great you feel that you have gotten your moneys worth though and I am happy to hear :)
Every now and then I think about returning to play, but then you can't even play without a membership and once you pay that premium, you eventually get stuck at a point where you can no longer progress through the game solo. This is my biggest annoyance. I always hate it when games require people to play with others to do certain aspects of the game, or in this case make battles so incredibly hard for anyone other than maxed out characters.
Arc 1 desperately needs to be made free to play because starting a new wizard and barely finish Wizard City will feel nice but also imtimidating when you see there are about... 10+ worlds you also need to complete to get caught up. Worst yet, the more worlds that are added the more the lower worlds and arcs are ignored and neglected like Mooshu and Zafaria; thus leaving struggling players stuck on the world.
Kingsisle implementing this free membership thing every blue moon helps remedy the distraught feeling but it's far from a solution.
I mean it's an MMO for a reason... You can just use the team up feature or ask for temporary help on the discord and then go your separate ways

While do agree that the people who keep buying into KI's dirty monetisation tactics (myself included) are to blame, It's impossible to look past the disgusting predatory schemes this company implements for the sake of profiting off a game they insist on advertising as a kid's game. Look at spellements for example, they're just a way to profit off of every single spell because the revenue from lore spells wasn't cutting it anymore. What is sad is that spellements could be interesting if not for the terrible implementation and the upgrade paths actually being based on school identity and not buff trades.
I also think the game suffers from an incredibly ridiculous level cap. Constantly pushing it forward isn't the way to go, because questing is nothing but clicking two cards, as you've said, and then talking to npcs.

Spellements could have been amazing if kingsisle didn’t world/level cap them. A lot of people ended up making a new character to then farm the spellements they needed for their max level character which does not make sense at all. Why level / world cap them in the first place if max levels needed them the most? It’s just a way for them to hope we spend more time playing the game on a new character. Those minor details is why players continue to complain about this game, and all the complaints are very valid. Kingsisle will never listen as they continue to get away with it. You are so right, they have become more predatory with their monetisation tactics.

Nothing but facts. The point about them not expecting the game to last this long is especially apparent in the story. It feels like the game could have ended at Empyrea or even Khrysalis but they just wanted to keep going for the money. Arc 4 feels much less planned out and that they just made it up as they went along compared to Arcs 1, 2, and 3. I enjoyed Novus but haven't had the motivation to play Wallaru on any of my characters because it just doesn't seem interesting anymore.
KI's greed becomes apparent when Wiz has 20 worlds but they won't even consider opening up the first 5 (which they haven't even changed in over 12 years) for free. Their membership model is outdated and it feels like almost all the new things they add are locked behind some additional paywall. Even for things you can get by grinding like Spellements, they make it unnecessarily difficult to obtain them so people just spend money on packs and the whales do it.
The community is also super toxic. People who have 8+ maxes across different accounts think they're gods and will bully you for anything. They will flex using two accounts to max their new wizards quckly and then make fun of people for not having all schools maxed and having a life outside of Wiz. I can't count the number of times I've seen someone told to kill themselves in Darkmoor runs alone. I never see these people get muted or banned either.
The game is not going to meaningfully grow no matter how many times KI does free-trial events because the community is toxic to beginners, Wiz is basically the only game that still does a membership model, instead of making old content more modern they just add more worlds, and their advertising is bad. I've played semi-consistently for the past 5 years and got 4 level 160s in that time but the issues with KI and Wiz I noticed my first year of high school are the exact same issues I notice now in my first year of college and it's only getting worse. I haven't played since November and probably won't again until things change. Great Video!
Game fell off
I haven't been caught up to speed regarding what was going on in Wizard101 for a long time. I've found this game in 2011, somewhere in summer or early autumn - I remember this well because I recall attending the halloween towers that year and beforehand we didn't have a PC. By early 2012 I've discovered an European Polish server and due to the lack of a language barrier as well as THE ENTIRE FIRST ARC BEING FREE (at the time) I switched to there and completely abandoned the US servers. I only came back to US years later and even then, I've shifted to Pirate101 because Wiz simply got boring. Even on my main ice wiz back on the EU server, I only finished ARC 1 and 2 and Polaris a few years back in early 2020s and stopped. That was also when I used some trivia bots (not the lame browser extention, an actual downloadable script that allowed doing trivia on multiple accs AT ONCE) and then got a month member for US wiz through empower trading before getting IP banned a month later LMFAO
And then you wanna keep bringing up “causal causal” why tf would a casual be so interested in grinding gear 🤣 you make no sense

Great video and kudos to being brave enough to display both sides fairly. Been playing since 2009. SO MUCH COMPLAINING. I find most who complain that it's not all free have no problem spending $$ on Fortinite, COD, LOL, exorbitant phone plans, etc. $60 a year seems a bargain to me considering the time I spend playing and the enjoyment it provides. End-of-world gear grind complaints----ENOUGH. So many wiz are so desperate to be the first to fly thru the content it took months/years to create, they ignore the storyline and they are done with a year left before the next update. WHAT IS THE HURRY?
Besides for nostalgia I play wizard101 for the storylines, both main and side.
The core gameplay is lackluster and I don’t think its possible to make it interesting without an entire rehaul to the mechanics and enemy AI. Compared to other online card games such as Hearthstone, the process of gaining only one power pip per turn and playing only one card per turn doesn’t leave a lot of room for interesting strategy. KI kind of locked themself into a box where blade + AOE is just too efficient.
I wanted to come back to the game after 1-2 years, but I think I'll wait. Thank you.
i truly think the downfall/bad turning point was raids. the idea of a guild was great in theory, but the delivery wasn’t what people wanted. the raids were genuinely too hard to complete, but then its also like you can’t say that because then you’re “a PVE player complaining.” the community is at such odds too. i don’t blame their pay to win features honestly, because a lot of games have it implemented. the developers aren’t listening, that’s my problem. nobody asked for this nightmare dungeon, nobody asked for a damage cap, nobody asked for archmastery. there’s select individuals that are voicing their opinion, and KI runs with it because they think these select individuals have the same beliefs as the community and hopes for the game, which they don’t. not everyone is a PVP player, a PVE player, or a PTW (pay to win) player. this doesn’t feel like wizard101 anymore, this game feels very out of touch from its original nostalgic reasons that most people play. KI is honestly more to blame rather than the players that are considered “whales” imo. those players are just doing what KI wants them to do as a response, at least that’s how i take it. KI has caused the rift between the community as well, because they’re implementing things for less than 10% of the player base. if that’s the case, make a challenge mode for the entire game (solo fights, mob fights, harder PVP rules, etc). it’s really unfortunate that the community truly can’t come together nowadays. if they’re not against the devs (for good reason), they’re against each other. it’s not a competition of who complains the most (like that one reddit post calling out PVE players for “complaining too much” while not acknowledging PVP players complaints). the game just doesn’t feel the same, and the community just feels so divided that i truly only play just to max out my wizards, if i get merciless or aeon gear along the way, cool. if not, also cool

Yep, with all this, this is why I'm still (somewhat) enjoying pirate a lot more than wiz. Nowadays there's enough content for me to make more edits, or contribute more to the wiki. Doing those are more than enough to make me happy, personally. Can't wait for the big update this year on pirate, it'll be so hype and I really hope they market it RIGHT and stuff ngl.

i feel like this side of the community wants the game to finish with a final storyline and let it have a proper burial, so they could move on with their lives.
the other side wants to keep their child hood memories alive (including me) support the game and keep the employees paid in hopes of more content for the future however I've moved on from the game not as addicted as i used to be when i was younger but i still want the game to grow and have others experience the lifelong friendships i made over time from meeting new people and just having something fun in common with them to connect.

And its definitely the story that keeps me going because in these in-between years like this year, i probably will beat whatever new dungeon they have and just wait till next November. I quit back in like 2013, and just came back to it like a month ago. Love it coming from Destiny.
Now that I've actually watched more of the video I gotta say it's interesting to hear so many people complain that the game's gotten boring & too easy when funnily enough the reason I loved it so much was for the stories & designs & the reason I stopped was because it got too complicated & exhausting.
Now I'm one of those Identity V/Genshin Impact gamers & while I enjoy them, the communities just aren't the same as WIzard101's for me.
I guess _because_ I never got much farther than Celestia I never faced the toxicity as much as others have, so I mostly have fond memories of playing through the quests with my family & friends.
It pains me to see this is what's happened to the game & its followers.

JamesTheAce made a really good video criticisng the game and the developers for not keeping the game fresh and basically devolving it.
I think there is a way to fix the community problem with the community being stale and weird sometimes. All they have to do is extended the f2p part of the game from level 8 to at least level 40. In other words, make Arc 1 free. 90% of the people that play the game quit after the first hour because they hit a paywall and miss out on 99.9% of the game. By making Arc 1 free, you will keep a lot of the players, they will learn a lot more about the game and if they fall in love with it they will pay for membership and continue playing. It's not 2012 anymore where a lot of people stay in for the community and then keep playing and coming back because of nostalgia. The community is much older these days and it's difficult to be a new player these days. I know this because I met a few new players and they have told me this exact stuff.
You mentioned the Hall of heroes fight. Ratbeard said that speeding up combat will make the game hollow, as if it isn't hollow right now.
One of the biggest problems in my opinion is that schools completely lost the identity in both pvp and pve. Who cares about your HP or shields when most of the things can be killed in a few turns so why would you shield when you can blade and hit or support the hitter with blades and feints? Bosses have huge pierce anyways and with shields you're just wasting your time.
And also the developers deserve every piece of criticism they get. The fact a greedy company and greedy devs got lucky and created an actual fun and original and an addictive game is the reason why the updates are so bad and the game is so overmonetized. And I do agree with you that whales are a part of the problem. I've seen people spend hundreds upon hundreds of bucks to get a stitch robe speaks enough of itself.

I just came back to wiz a few days ago and thought I should watch some videos to catch up on all the new updates and stuff. Sadly with this video it does sound like wizard101 is slowly getting worse, but I will say imo other MMO RPGs are a lot more grindy and more expensive. Honestly wizard101 seems pretty forgiving and it is very easy compared to other games where the power creep is too hard and bad for new players. I agree with how the game seem stale though, even though I bought membership a couple days ago, I am already getting bored. The only thing that is keeping me going on wiz is the community. Undoubtedly, there are many things KI should work on instead of releasing packs, and I’m sad to hear about that. Anyways, thank you for the informative video. ❤

Wow. What a video. The last time I played Wizard101 “Seriously” was in early 2020. The games direction was very concerning to say the least. I think 130 was lvl cap. They had just nerf lore, burning rampage & guardian spirit in PvP. I had every school Warlord & PvP was my thing. Quested numerous wizards to max lvl & had every pet imaginable. My account was stacked. Quitting looks like the best choice I made. I really thought this game was done for by 2020. The people who whale (like me back in the day) really are the reason this game stays a float. I think the reason people are addicted & don’t want to quit is because of time & money spent. To anyone who might read this comment. I spent no joke thousands of dollars on the game & can guarantee you for the 8 or so years I played Wizard101. I had well over 10,000 hours played. You can quit. I’m about to speak in old wiz language to those who still wouldn’t quit. Bro I had every ward pet, triple double damage pets, critical pets, all my characters Warlord, I had all the code wands from fishing. My 130 storm had perfect stats (at the time) almost 200 dmg 100% critical chance so I could power lvl whatever I wanted. I had numerous bundles. All the gauntlets. I had every schools matching ghulture mount for the extra dmg. Like… guys… I was a f*** nerd at this game lmao. I needed to step away and I’m glad I did. I’ve taken a lot more control of my irl. Crownsisle doesn’t care about the players. They care about $$$. There might be certain individuals at the company that care, but the company as a whole 100% does not. I urge anyone trying to quit just to go for it. Real life is waiting. There are bigger & better things out there. I haven’t played in over 4 years but I still check on the community every once in a while. Solid, solid video. Thumbs up!
Yes you are 100% right! Those that have spent wayyyy too much money on the game don’t want to quit because they don’t want all the money they spent to go to waste. The only way would be if their acc got banned, they started a family IRL to prioritise their money correctly, or videos like these that expose how their money spending habits have negatively affected the rest of the communities ability to enjoy the game.

Wizard101's still in this weird state where it's trying to be a gacha game (unable to complete higher level content without forking over unknown amounts of time for gear grinding or money for a chance at obtaining it to have sustainable gear) with the perks of a subscription based game (membership benefits, ability to progress, etc). The concept falls flat on its face with too many money-hungry options to get players involved with and it burns out players from wanting to continue playing. It should be clear at this point that Wizard101's identity leans towards and is clearly a MMORPG-Gacha game so it should be F2P but include a pity based system to help achieve rarer and exclusive items to prevent excessive grinding. I want this game to stick around so badly cause I'm in love with the story to the point I barely ever skip dialogue (even after seeing it probably 10 times now over multiple wizards lmao) and hope Kingsisle starts to actually make the gameplay less painful.
Wizard101 has come a long way, for better or for worse, but nowadays it certainly feels like the game is on its last legs. There's not much you can do about whales besides just shutting down the game outright, though most people - myself included - also keep playing for that nostalgia factor. The magic is gone, yes - players are finally growing up and the devs don't know when to quit/move on. They've been working on this game for 15 years now and they're not making anything new/mainstream. Their revenue will dry up soon if they don't start looking into making new games or taking the IP they already have and turning it into other things like books or movies/TV shows, for example. (Their current merch drops don't exactly count)
Most of all, KingsIsle currently has 100% of this sort of market with zero competition. There is nowhere for players to really go for the same fix, but then they have too many high expectations of the devs. And then the devs in turn start to ignore the community because there are simply too many conflicting opinions to listen to, all the while hardly doing much to improve the overall experience because they know they have the market completely captured.
The biggest problem is simply *stagnation* in the market and in the game itself. With no competition, there's no drive to do better. With competition, not only will KingsIsle be forced to either step it up or fall apart at the seams, but the Wizard101 community will also (hopefully) band together to dictate the game's overall fate. If KingsIsle does things right, then their remaining players will fight to save it. If KingsIsle does things wrong, then Wizard101 will become a ghost town overnight.

I think one of the games that has even come close to showing them competition was Hogwarts legacy. They could have made the quest storyline into books, you’re so right. This game has such a loyal community evident with all their plushy merch sales, membership and crownshop sales, and sticking around through some of the worst choices that we’ve ever seen them make. Unfortunately, they’re exploiting this instead of building something better.
I too would love to see this game succeed as it was my childhood, but like all games, they have an ending. You’re suppose to play them for a moment in time then when you complete it, you move onto the next game. Unfortunately, we haven’t let this game go as they keep stringing us along to hope. Hope that they make the right choices. Hope that they listen to us. Hope, that was never deserved. The only thing this game has provided was comfort to our childhood self, influencing our nostalgia. Comfort through boredom, socialisation, teamwork, and having something to look forward to when school ended.
We have the power to influence how much money they make, but it seems like we have given THEM the power because of our addiction and inability to let go of the nostalgia. Even if it wasn’t about power, then it would be about working together. But clearly, it is very much one-sided.
I’ve been on since 2007 and quite frankly I enjoy the game I have ran into rude players who take the game way to serious and honestly so tired of other players telling other players their gear sucks and not recommending any gear to help the person they are saying it too,stop giving unwanted opinions of someone else’s gear and leave people alone keep your thoughts of someone’s gear being bad to yourself, not everyone can sit and grind all day and night if someone feels the need to go for better gear they’ll do it when they have time most people play the game for fun and if you’re not doing nothing to help in battle don’t go barking orders and demanding people hit when you want them to also as well don’t assign someone to hit if they didn’t agree to you can’t be mad at them for hitting when you expect them to.

i used to loev to throw those parties in in the different school towers. i forget which one, Storm, i think, had a secret room that you had to kmow someone and port into it, those were the days now everwhere you look is empty. feels like walking through a ghost town you once lived and thirved in in 😢. maybe if they release on console, that would be revive the game but i doubt it.

Last time I played the level cap had just become 60. I reinstalled it the other day just to see what it was like. Game felt lifeless, maybe it's cuz I'm older now, but idk I've gone back to other old games before and didn't get the same feeling. Also noticed it seems like the cash shop is way more predatory now and I was shocked to see that they still make you pay for a subscription to even be able to remotely play the game. You would think after 15 years of advertising as a "free" game they would have made more worlds free but I guess not lmao. It was a nice trip down memory lane, but I don't think I will be grinding again. Quite honestly I'm surprised it still hasn't shutdown or gotten any upgrades/sequels after all this time.
I agree, they could’ve kept the game alive and prosperous if they made the main storyline entirely free 7 years after the launch and then invested in ads explaining that it was free now. It could’ve easily brought a lot of people back but the company made too many poor decisions.
You're so right. Also the fact that they have coded it so that everytime we log onto a character, the crownshop pops up which emphasises how much of a cash grab the game is. They could not care less about adding good quality stuff into the game, just give them money.

I am in my fifties. And, play wizard 101 solely as an escape. From the world around me. Shootings, Rapes, Criminal Trials, Global Catastrophes, Social and Societal differences etc….
I limit myself to $ 10.00 a month. And, feel that to be given a sanctuary where I can leave the insanity of what ‘s just outside my door is a fair exchange.
However, I also set my settings as such that I allow no friend , no trade, no hatch or any other form of request. Again I play as a form of therapy.
I urge others to do the same. With restraint. I pay for a cable and, internet service . That is far more costly than the self imposed budget I a-lot for this escape.
I couldn’t care less about stats, pets, grinding etc…..
I play my characters to a level I can easily master and, leave it at that.
In short, it all comes down to perspective. What do you want from the experience? Do you want to gloat and brag about what amounts to just nonsense. Do you want ? Like me ). A diversion / off ramp from the Ukraine Conflict, Iceland Eruptions, Economic Collapse of Greece, Ramped Gun Violence in the US, Housing Shortage in Canada, etc….
I consider the access to a far simpler matter worth the investment.
I don’t buy membership. I buy areas. As I play a ton of Characters. I never need to renew and, restrict my play. I keep a ledger for the game. And, keep a war-chest of crowns. I have every area purchased as far as Novus . To date .
But, if I can’t beat the trickster Then that will be as far as I go. And, that will mean $ 60’000 crowns and counting will sit idle.
I do feel that KI or whomever had the rights. Needs to look at that aspect. There are players who have means that will play. And, buy the worlds. PROVIDED they can solo the main quest line start to finish ALWAYS .
I will never be into the other offerings regarding the game. Raids, Beastmoon, Decathlon, etc…. Isn’t happening ever.
Simple, easy, and enjoyable. Is all I ask for.

I can’t stress enough how much better this game feels if you just take a break. Dont force yourself to play. Just go focus on school, work, or another game. Come back in a year or two, in that time your nostalgia will be refilled, you’ll have skipped a few annoying grinds, and the game will feel fresh again. It’s a 16 year old game, let it be a fun nostalgic experience instead of no-lifing it like its still 2010.

Wizard 101 should have died years ago. It's an iconic game that's been foundational to the role-playing genre, but it was above all else designed to maximize profits, not player enjoyment. Whaling and soul-crushing levels of grinding are the epitome of this type of game. Don't blame the community for trying to enjoy a simple pleasure in life. Blame the greedy board of executives and owners of the company for milking their player base like cows and refusing to let developers design a game that can be enjoyed by everyone.

I haven't farmed for gear on my higher level wizards since the catacombs. I enjoyed farming for Darkmoor, but ever since they forced us to trade for the best gear it has become extremely grindy and just not fun. I occasionally level on lower level wizards (below 100) out of boredom for a month, but the late game just isn't nearly as enjoyable as it was then for example 100 was the max.
A major problem is it a very repetitive meta centered game held up by nostalgia. Here’s the thing, a majority of the game is “kill x, collect x, talk to x, repeat” which can get old, but the new scenes and characters make it *somewhat* bearable. In addition to this, how do you go about progressing the worlds? The meta is packing your best AoE, with same blades and maybe a few other cards. The only time you change this up is boss fights. This makes progression get stale and old. Of course, you don’t have to play this way, but it’s slower and suboptimal if you don’t.
So the game is repetitive in both play style and progression. What else?
It’s majorly held up by adults (and now maybe their kids) who want a fraction of the nostalgia they felt when they first started playing. For some that’s enough, but for how LONG the story is, the fun of discovering new areas and spells (especially since tons of them aren’t even used) only lasts so long. The excitement just isn’t there anymore.
i quit and my friend begged me to come back, we both buy membership at the same time and he never played, this cycle happend 2-3 times and then I eventually leveled with out him, because im wasting money and he kept doing it. he gets mad at me for leveling ahead of him. i helped him level when he did play and now im 130 and hes 75. He also made me play life for some reason, he is ice. I wanted to play death, but that's the wizard life I guess
I honestly cant bring myself to play this game anymore. I used to play it for a couple of months a year for years. I just find it SOOO boring nowadays. Combat is clicking the same card over and over, the community is delusional and is never happy (look at the reddit. Yikes.), all the "side content" if you can call it that is grindy and repetitive, Ratbeard and other devs constantly acting unprofessional and just downright awful to people, and more. Ill always appreciate the memories this game has given me, and MAYBE ill return one day, but for now? It just isnt worth it.
Unfortunately some of the most important game play features that you need to do arent fun at all. Crafting, gardening, and pet making are not at all engaging.
Think of more modern games like minecraft or zelda. The player is actively making decisions and interacting with the environment. The player needs to work to get stuff but the progression in those games are smoother. In wiz its literally the lowest lows and the highest highs. It can be fun to team up with friends in battle with your new spells or gear, but getting to that point is a boring dull grind.
I feel like they could make the game less of a grind by natrually providing more rewards for doing things!
This game would be fire if each activity was self perpetuating. Like getting the best gear isn’t required to beat a new world, so a long grind at the end isn’t as bad if equivalent gear costs like 10 tickets for PvP. But like I don’t need PvP rank or tickets to do beastmoon or raids, but at least at max I need raid gear, and beastmoon spellements help a lot.If they put the game on mobile, and made PvP accessible, marketed it as an esport (or whatever hearthstone does) they could squeeze another decade out of this game. Then everyone can go off in their own corner do what they enjoy and then talk about it in the commons or show off with unique cosmetic items based on whatever content they do. The rewards you do get feel less unique since everyone feels pressured into doing all the content. I should want to do raids to get a sick house to put my pvp trophies in, not so I can compete. Level 100 PvP rn is decent since the gear grind isn’t too horrible, and I suppose more importantly it’s not going to change dramatically by the time I get all my gear, and I can work at spellements more casually. Until things become accessible at max I plan to just park my other wizards at the lower PvP brackets. I’d reccomend the same to other people that aren’t trying to make this game their life, but want to enjoy PvP. Allowing third parties to make ui edits and texture packs would also go hard.

Yeah honestly this pattern of Wiz being too grindy was noticed a while ago. I think what’s more prevalent is that the amount of grinding that you have to do to the stats you desired. Aeon gear was a very strict example of this after the grind has to been changed to 9 masterpiece gears which is arguably more grindy then how it was before. Wallaru significantly improved this and made it a lot more tolerable and more linear of what to achieve for. Then they released the nightmare dungeon and it all went to shit. 25 times to do the dungeon to get the badge. Challenge mode being easier than standard due to Roshambo spells as counters. In fact the dungeon itself is very easy, minus parts of the Krok Ankh cheat but it is extremely tedious because of the maze and the LITERAL broken dreams. They improved something and then took it a step back. The pity system is Novus was extremely broken whereas Wallaru was improved and then the nightmare dungeon made it a lot worse again. Not to mention the increase in nightmare dungeon gear compared to Aeon is a literal 1% increase across the board. It’s just sunk cost fallacy for players to get the best gear where it really won’t mean anything in the end and only for specific situations. Darkmoor was the pinnacle of best gear to achieve and the most hype dungeon to farm. Now it’s this system we have. “Challenging” content like raids are really suffering from the fact that it is pvp only spells. Why do they feel the need to nerf us to make something challenging? Remove potions and marks yeah, but if you feel the need to nerf us through our spell deck and stats then it makes challenging content pointless. Overall Wiz has lost its taste. Loot in earlier worlds are still phenomenal to chase after and the social aspect has definitely degraded compared to the past but I think the newest content is very lackluster and uninnovative
Yep, with every new year comes new meta gear to really grind like it's a full time job. I've stopped grinding at aeon and I will never, ever, ever grind the nightmare dungeon. I don't even have enough reaver accessory gear for all my classes. Like bro, this is actually infuriating.
Yeah everyone was so happy about wallaru crafting system until nightmare released haha. It was too good to be true. If kingsisle doesn’t listen to community feedback (even though they don’t need to as whales will continue to keep the game alive) then there is no reason to still hold onto hope that the devs will make the game better. I haven’t given them money in 6yrs, but the community has by funding my account so that I can continue to post content and stream the game which is a problem in itself.

Yep agreed, I only have one character and it’s maxed out with the 4 pieces of reaver gear from the 4 bosses and the 4 pieces of Aeon gear from Novus. I ran the nightmare dungeon ONCE and never again. I will also not pay for the icy night mire robe as I do not supports whales as well. I have all the best stats that I’ve desired on my one character and only character and I won’t be playing on a second character ever. Go for gear that is worth your time, not for gear that doesn’t respect your time.

the money milked is enough to make this game as graphical as AAA games but ofc the 4 heads are using it for their own reaches.. business as usual
idk if this will get through but all i hope for with this game is not to put it in spots where it needs to be an endless grind but should be rewarding kind of like when they introduced lvl 100 and darkmoor, different bosses needed to be farmed and having different cheats and a dynamic needed to be worked around. yes, it got stale but when you finished it felt rewarding and not like a waste such as dragoon gear or novus gear. i feel like they should release new stuff and patch more things to keep the game alive (maybe no membership system for first 2 arcs and/or put money into advertising/youtube partnerships and such) because this is an amazing game and i don't see the end near but only mismanagement and forced decision making to keep the servers up. I had one thought that maybe in aqualia they would add the titans and it might be an idea they could go with for level 180, 190 or 200 just sayin
The game could have stopped development at arc 3 and keep it under maintenance. Maybe focus on pirate instead.
i think the whales ruined the game, buying every pack etc and not giving the company a reason to change since they were profitable. a similar case is pokemon, the games on the switch have received loads of criticism but they still have record sales so why should they change?
No reason the game has to end just stop buying the packs. Y'all keep blaming the dev teams for packs when you're the ones who buy them. If the community comes together and doesn't buy the packs and even go a step further to step back from the game when they do release a very predatory pack then they'll stop doing it. But I can say rn the majority of you commenting agreeing with this and how bad Wiz is go run and buy the new pack as soon as it drops. YOU'RE THE PROBLEM

I agree with most of your takes here and I hope that the community (both devs and players) can take some notes on this video. I love this game, and I have been playing it since I was a little kid. I would hate to see one of my favorite games of all time continue to suffer like this 💔
I used to love this game. If they reversed some changes, maybe people would come back. They’ve muddled up the game too much. The gameplay and playstyle is hotdog water.
here's a hot take, with the kind of attitude of kings isle, the company respectfully wasn't meant to last as long as it has on the choices they made as a buisness.
personally wish they would go back to the root of the combat while sure doing the other things but more of a mini game experience but that's just me

Agreed with your points but i believe there is a lot more to it when it comes to this game losing its magic.Kingsisle went overboard with updates and changes.Spellements, Shambos and gambits shaken what the game has been for so many years it changed everything and overloaded a player grinding and made a total mess of pvp . There is too many reasons and things to actually name imo why the game is not good like it used to be and why imo is dying and Ki is milking it hard now. The state of the game now is a complete mess and i think its finally dying. I love the game so bad been playing it since beta and after all these years i only this year feel that the game has changed so much that i can not play it anymore or keep up with changes and things like the bad second raid they put in the game the gear the broken pvp, the so many spellements to farm ect.It doesn't feel like im playing wizard anymore yes the packs every 3 months geez.You are overloaded with bs and cant enjoy the game like i used to for so many years sadly.
I do agree that KI releases wat to many items to buy in crowns shop just to milk money, it is sad you cant even play most the game without either getting membership or vuying each area, saying that i hope the game doesn't ahut down at all i still love playing but because of how hard you hace to grind i don't bother getting the top gear it would take forever to do. Kingsisle shouldn't of let a toxic company buy into the game they will milk the game for all its worth
Game feels more hard and not easy, especailly if you are not min maxing for waterworks gear and trying to dual schooling at low level with celestia gear.
