"The Band" was a Canadian-American rock band formed in 1967. They started out as the "Hawks", the backing group for singer Ronnie Hawkins & later they were the back up band for Bob Dylan. Their most popular songs are "The Weight" & "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". But they had a lot of other great songs such as "Up On Cripple Creek", "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)", "The Shape I'm In", "Ophelia", "It Makes No Difference" etc.

I lived on the San Francisco Peninsula from 1967-77 and this was the last concert I saw at Winterland. They opened the doors at 5:00 pm and it ran well past the usual 2:00 am closing time. I had seen the Band there a few years earlier, but this show with Dylan, Clapton, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Ron Wood, Ringo Starr, Joni Mitchell and many other guest performers was truly epic. I didn't know at the time that it was being recorded, so when I saw the movie years later, I could hardly believe that I was getting to relive the experience all over again. The nostalgia I felt, increased the experience exponentially.

Robert E Lee was the Commanding General of the Confederacy. When they sing "come and see the Robert E Lee" they are referring to a riverboat of that name. The Civil War was primarily fought over the issue of slavery. Cheap slave labor was the source of wealth for many land owners in the South. The massive loss of lives on both sides was heart breaking and even split some families apart. The more you go down The Band's rabbithole the more impressed you will be. Fabulous musicians and songwriting. Reall top notch.

Negative ghost rider, the war was about money power and greed. Only in the end did slavery play a part. When Lincoln knew he was in trouble, he created the " emancipation proclamation". In all reality Lincoln was for slavery. Here is one of his quotes; if I could win the war without setting a single slave free, I'd do it!....
And also the north had the same or more slaves as the South.
In 1864 Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama were the richest states in the nation. These states held the key to everything that came through the Mississippi River and it's ports throughout the south. Washington and the north wanted this for themselves. Thus, the war started. And to this day, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama are the 3 poorest states in the nation.

Yes, this is definitely revisionist history. South Carolina actually succeeded from the Union before Lincoln was even sworn into office (Lincoln was removed from all Southern Presidental ballots so he did not carry one Southern state) and the attack on Fort Sumter occurred about a month later (the Emancipation Proclamation wouldn't occur until 2 years later and while it did not free the slaves, it gave them a path to freedom by joining the Union Army). Lincoln was not a hard-core abolitionist, but the North was intent on restricting future slave states, which the South recognized would diminish their future political power. Back to the song, whether one one fought on the side of the Confederacy or the Union was pretty much determined by geography, as slave ownership was only for rich landowners in the south. Slavery was the driving force in the agrarian South needing massive cheap later, while the North was primary industrial. The truth is the end of the Civil War was a forgone conclusion, especially after Gettysburg, where Lees hope of fighting the war in Union territory was dashed and it quickly became a war of attrition due to the South's dwindling resources. The point of the song was from the prospective of a common man in the south, not fighting for slavery, but to preserve the only way of life he knows.

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. Yes, that was General Lee who was the supreme commander of the rebel army. Richmond, Virginia was the capital of the Confederate states. The southern or Confederate states were the rebels and seceded from the northern states which started the Civil war. The south is also called Dixie. The people of the northern states were called the Yankees. Needless to say, the northern states under Abraham Lincoln defeated the southern states thus abolishing the institution of slavery.

Richmond, Virginia, the capital of the Confederacy, fell to Union forces on April 3, 1865.
April 2: The Confederate government and military begin to evacuate Richmond. Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his Cabinet leave by rail. Soldiers are instructed to set fire to warehouses and bridges as they leave. This is the night referred to in the song.
April 3: Before dawn, Confederate troops destroy bridges as the last soldiers leave going south. Union troops advance from their lines to the east, arriving on the edge of the city at around 7:30 AM. The 29th (Colored) Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry is the first Union infantry to enter the city.
Once Union General Ulysses S. Grant had taken nearby Petersburg, Jefferson Davis, the Confederate President, and his Cabinet evacuated Richmond by rail, instructing Confederate soldiers to set fire to warehouses and bridges as they left. The flames spread unchecked and devastated the city before being extinguished by Northern troops after the city surrendered.
President Abraham Lincoln and his son Tad visited the smoldering city on April 4th. Ten days later, after the Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House, Lincoln was shot in the head by actor and Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth while Lincoln was attending the play "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. Lincoln died of his wounds the following day, April 15, 1865 at 7:22 am in the Petersen House opposite the theater. He was the first U.S. president to be assassinated.
Near the end of the American Civil War, Lincoln's assassination was part of a larger political conspiracy intended by Booth to revive the Confederate cause by eliminating the three most important officials of the federal government. Conspirators Lewis Powell and David Herold were assigned to kill Secretary of State William H. Seward, and George Atzerodt was tasked with killing Vice President Andrew Johnson.
Beyond Lincoln's death, the plot failed: Seward was only wounded, and Johnson's would-be attacker became drunk instead of killing the vice president. After a dramatic initial escape, Booth was killed at the end of a 12-day chase. Powell, Herold, Atzerodt, and Mary Surratt were later hanged for their roles in the conspiracy.
I was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia and I grew up in a rural area near the small town of Chester about 20 miles south of Richmond, between Richmond and Petersburg. In the woods around my house, there were many trenches still intact from the Civil War (aka "The War of Northern Aggression" as some southerners called it). My friends and I played imaginary battles in those trenches when we were kids. In the autumn, the trenches would be filled with fallen leaves and we had fun jumping into the huge piles of leaves in the trenches.

"The Last Waltz" is an amazing movie, filled with all sorts of cameos. Feels like half of the big artists in music at the time show up. This song is, I think, more about the plight of the poor working man, more than it is specifically about Southern Civil War veterans. Levon is from Arkansas, and they have a very Southern vibe, but they do a good job of defying categorization. A lot of Southerners felt like they lost the best of their young men to a war helping rich slave owners, who often found a way to get out of fighting in the war that sought to protect their way of life.

As others have mentioned, there are so many gems from that concert, the collaborations with all the musicians and bands they ever played with (they were the back up band for Bob Dylan, for instance, and were simply referred to as "the band" so they kept that as their name when they went out on their own.) Others have also recommended The Weight and I heartily agree! Levon Helm sings Ophelia, and other songs you'd love - Up on Cripple Creek, Evangeline, The Shape I'm In, It Makes No Difference. Sometimes I just put the whole album on repeat... :)

If you want an audio/musical history suggest the concept album "White Mansions" featuring a host of very special musicians put together by outlaw country star Waylon Jennings and his Wife Jessie Coulter and even Eric Clapton sitting in. It tells the story from the Southern side with several characters woven in the songs, the aristocrat son who leaves his finance as an officer, the low down redneck who doesn't care about slavery but if you're gonna invade his land, how the South didn't want war but when the Union invaded they took up arms and heck it'd be over in six weeks time and they'd just whip their asses. And how the whole affair turned into a huge national tragedy with the Southern states on a comparative basis seeing more destruction than Europe in WW2. The spectacular thing about this song from a lyrical perspective is that it perfectly captures the plight of the poor southerners after the war, their land ravaged, their Confederate money literally worthless, and their friends, neighbors, and family dead, without glorifying the evils of the Confederacy or embracing the Lost Cause mythology. Much credit to Robbie Robertson for writing it and to Levon Helm for giving him a southerner's perspective, not to mention to Levon for the unbelievably poignant singing.

I'm so glad you had a chance to experience The Band. They were one of the premier classic rock bands and their music is timeless. Robbie Robertson (the guitarist and one of their songwriters) went on to work with Scorsese, scoring many of his films. They made an incredible team. Most of their great songs are listed below, but a particular favorite of mine is Chest Fever, with one of the most amazing organ introductions ever. And as an aside, Todd Rundgren, who you recently reacted to, produced The Band's Stage Fright album.

Great Reaction! ❤ The church bells were ringing in the South as a warning to everyone in town! This is the perspective from the side that lost, the South, whose army was led by Robert E. Lee. So glad you reacted to this one, which I haven't heard since the early 70s, but was on the radio a lot when it came out! ❤ You asked for recommendations on the American Civil War and I cannot be more emphatically excited to recommend Ken Burns' documentary mini-series called The Civil War. It uses real photographs, letters from soldiers to their loved ones and vice-versa to tell the story of the war as if you are hearing it from your Grandpa, complete with the beautiful & often sad music of the 1860s in the background. If that is the only thing you ever watch, you'll know everything. Ken Burns is the ultimate historian & creator for documentaries.❤❤❤

@SaeedReacts. you too! And you will love it. It is a multi-hour series, but each hour stands on its own it breaks up the civil war into 10 hours or so - something like that. This war was gritty & cruel. Some of the photographs are astonishing. They are some of the earliest photographs ever taken in the u.s.a. I am a woman & still enjoyed it. It is not technical, but it does explain war strategy a bit. It is heartbreaking, actually. The best MOVIES i would recommend ; COLD MOUNTAIN with Jude Law, Renee Zellweger, & Nicole Kidman. A GREAT movie!! And "GONE WITH THE WIND" with Clatk Gable & Vivien Leigh - it is a famous movie from the 1930s when the Civil War was only 60 years in the past. It is also an epic and great movie!!

The American Civil War was a complicated scenario that developed over many decades with stark societal differences, some of which still present issues today. It was a very bloody conflict resulting in more than 600,000 deaths. At the end of the conflict many viewed the Union Army as the most powerful in the world. Churchill, upon learning that Pearl Harbor was bombed supposedly wrote "having studied the Civil War fought out to the last desperate inch, I went to bed and slept the sleep of the saved and thankful".

There aren’t really two sides, really except for the waste of good lives for evil. The Civil War was about slavery. The South(Dixie) wanted to continue the enslavement of African people. The South wanted to secede from the Union in order to keep their economic system working. The articles of secession plainly state the reason, slavery.
That said , Levon Helm was from the South, the only American in a band of Canadians. Love him (RIP) and the Band.

Levon's ancestors were from the North and were supporters of the union. Levon did not like performing this song. He was a believer that the Northern Union was right and the war was needed to stop slavery and force the states back together in the union and make the US one again.

    • @hp697c
      @hp697c 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

You are right to a certain extent and wrong at the same time. It is far more complicated than just the southern states wanted to preserve slavery. It was far more the issue that the federal government was overstepping their authority. It was and still to this day that the states have more power than the federal government when pertaining to laws. They succeeded because the federal government was making a law that all states would have to follow, which at the time was unheard of. Slavery was just the issue surrounding the arguments around state rights vs. the federal government. This is why it was necessary to pass amendments to the constitution to abolish slavery. Unfortunately, this was done after the war and not before. We can go deeper into the reasoning to the South's succession with taxation and other economic issues the South had with the northern states, but that would be a whole other book, and even the explanation that I gave on the state's rights issue is quite simplified.

If you want to know more about the War Between the States I recommend Ken Burns The Civil War, the books of historian Shelby Foote (born in my state), and a wonderful series of fiction books by the Shaaras. Gods and Generals, The Killer Angels, and The Last Full Measure. TKA was Michael Shaara, which won the Pulitzer and was the basis for the film Gettysburg, one of the best films about the War. G&G and TLFM was written by his son, Jeff Shaara, as bookends to his dad's book. As a Southerner and historian myself, I'm intimately acquainted with the history. My ancestors fought in this tragedy. Lived in Vicksburg for awhile, went relic hunting a bit on the banks of the river, seen the cannonball still stuck in the wall at Cedar Grove, and lived in an apartment that had been quarters for house slaves. Some of the old plantation homes are apartments in Vicksburg. If you ever come down here, holla. I can show you loads of music history and regular history.
Did you know that Levon Helm, the drummer/singer of The Band was also nominated for an Oscar for Coal Miner's Daughter? He played Loretta Lynn's daddy in the film.

Saeed - The 'Old Dixie' being referred to in the song is the Confederate flag which flew over the 11southern states of the Confederate States of America ( CSA ) from 1861 - 1865. When it says, 'They drove Old Dixie down' it means the soldiers of the United States of America ( Yankees ) took down the flag of the CSA flying over Richmond, Virginia, the capital, when it surrendered in April of 1865. These were very bad times in the South, much had been destroyed and there was little food.

One of my favorite performances and Levon Helm was such a great vocalist. One thing you do tend to notice about drummers who sing, is their vocals are usually dead on beat. You can drag or lead a vocal line, but I can't recall a drummer doing it. I think that would be pretty tough.

The American civil war was the result of centuries of culture clash, as well as economic warfare between the north and south. The southern states believed that since they voluntarily joined the union, they could voluntarily leave it. The north had the opposite opinion. Almost a million deaths later, the matter was "settled", I guess. Great song, great band, sad story.

The most iconic story written about the Civil War is Gone With the Wind written from the perspective of a spoiled southern belle Scarlett O'Hara. Fictional, but entertaining.
Recently I've been reading a series called the 'Bregdan Chronicles' by author Ginny Dye, (waiting on book 21 to come out this year) These books are well researched and tell of things happening in the North and the South during the pre war years and after. The politics (real history) and the life of a different kind of Southern lady from Richmond Virginia, (fictional history). The story addresses all of the issues of our struggling country during the years of 1860 to 1874 (so far).
These books deal with all of the issues from the slaves, Irish immigrants, Native Indians, the rise of the KKK, work conditions in major cities, child labor, the women's suffrage movement at the time and so much more. I would recommend them if you want an entertaining story with a lot of factual history throughout.
I really enjoy your channel and the way you react to the songs from my era.

I was born and raised in Denmark, and went to a little country school, but when I left school, I knew where New York, Boston, Miami, Los Angeles etc. was, also pretty much knew the different states and had a good idea of which state was in the East, the South etc.

Yes, you need to watch that! Greatest rockumentary of all time, about one of the great, great bands in rock history. Prior to going out on their own they were the backup band for Ronnie Hawkins known as the Hawks, then Bob Dylan’s backup band. Bob referred to them as “the band”. When they started doing their own thing they decided to make it their official name.

Will watch it. Heard about it for years, but now the timing seems perfect.

A great resource to learn about the Civil War is the PBS documentary by Ken Burns. A must see.
