Nice video Michael.. Good explanation. But this video did not resolve my problem. I have a second Hard Disk for data backup which stopped showing up the volume size, but detected in the disk management. Says its unknown and not initialized disk. When i try to initialize it, it says, "cannot initialize disk due to an I/O error". I am unable to rebuild the MBR as well. It run on a Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1 with 4 GB DDR RAM and a 1 TB main HDD. I tried using Disk partition softwares, but no software shows the DISK except the running one. I`m unable to resolve this through the disk management process as it says there is an I/O error. Is there a way to solve this problem and help me get back my hard disk working and try to recover the partitions and data ?

Alright I’m getting that error for my internal hard drive, it happened after my pc crashed and when I opened it back up, disk 0 wasn’t there, I tried initializing it or clicking the offline button but it said “request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. I can’t initialize it and it says unknown right under the disk 0 in computer management under storage. So I can’t even restore anything because I didn’t have any restore points. I don’t know if I should uninstall it and then reinstall it if that’s possible. Please help, I had all my games and school stuff on that drive.
I have a WD my book on win7 , had to reinstall windows and now the WD utility software can not be installed , it looks like it installing something but doesn't show any icon among the programs , tried to uninstall it but doesn't work .also tried to rename the hard , error message says it's protected .I don't know why , please help
Checked the hard drive in disk management. It's updated, it says it works perfectly but still doesn't work. You never spoke about power delivery being a possible issue. Essentially when the drive plugged directly into a PC with a PSU power adapter and a SATA cable works perfectly fine with no errors or surface disk problems etc.
This problem is often referred to the incompatibility of these sata usb cables, the chinese cables have this fault that disconnects in the middle of the transfer, the recommended sata usb cables are with genesis sata bridge chip, these work well with intel chipset on x79 x99 boards between others
My Toshiba isn't working after following all these steps (Canvio Advanced 4tb black). It has a scrambled password and it is: Running slow Freezing intermittently on start up Once running it works for 5mins then freezes and gives the first error "I/O" It won't let me check data count or copy and paste files to back then up.
So I'm getting this error with 2 usb drives that I have and it's almost impossible to even get them to show up anywhere. I can plug them into any other computer and they show up immediately and I formatted them. Once I plug them back into my computer they don't work. Crazy thing is I can put another usb drive from a friend in and it comes up immediately and works just fine. It's just all very strange to me. None of these tips work and I've searched tirelessly on the internet. Any ideas?

Here’s what you need to do, go to the advanced power settings and increase the amount of time set for your hard drive to shut down, what’s happening is the backup is taking so long that the hard drive is shutting down during the backup process because the computer is not in use.
You can't run chkdsk without having a drive letter on the drive...did we just overlook this completely? Beyond simply "get a new cable" as this video describes, does anyone any any other possible solutions.

My case is peculiar - the device is inaccessible in file explorer, unformattable, its partitions not readable by software and the only time I can interact with it is in 'device manager' and (sometimes) through disk management. None of the tips in this video managed to fix it. Any idea what else I can do?

In the System Configuration window, switch to the "Services" tab. Step 3. Check "Hide all Microsoft services" and click "Disable all" > "Apply" > "OK". Step 4. Then go to the "Startup" tab and click "Open Task Manager". Step 5. Click each item and choose "Disable". Step 6. Restart your computer and run CHKDSK again.

If it is not visible, try refreshing the list by clicking on “Action” and selecting “Rescan Disks”. If the SSD is listed but has no partitions, right-click on the unallocated space and select “New Simple Volume”. Follow the prompts to create a new partition and assign a drive letter. If the SSD is still not recognized by Windows, try updating the drivers for your storage controller. If none of these steps work, it’s possible that the SSD is faulty and needs to be replaced.

what if my drive has no letter and is in my laptop? .... it shows up as drive 0 and i cant do anything.. i have tried everything i can think of except taking the ssd hard drive out and plugging it to a card reader into another laptop.. could that be an option to fixing it?

Ok. So here's my problem I was having issues with errors on my HDD windows 10. Thankfully i made a recovery drive using a usb stick. I got a bunch of bad block errors so i did a chkdsk fix repair. Upon reboot i got a bsod ntfs error that kept happening everytime it rebooted. Ive tried numerous things. I used the usb recovery to get into recovery mode. Startup repair failed. I tried toreinstall windows via the recover from a drive that failed 3 times intil now even though i can see my hdd in bios if i try to boot manually i get an error that no drive is detected. I got the advice tondo the bootrec commands from command prompt that is FixMbr FixBoot ScanOs and Rebuildbcd. It successfully did fixmbr. I got an error fixboot access denied. Successfuly found 1 windows installation in E:\Windows but when i try to rebuildbcd i get am i/o error. Any ideas?
None of these have worked. I did something right prior because it wasn’t even showing on disk management. Now it is but, can’t initialize it no matter what.

hello wondershare --- have "liked & subscribed" .... great tutorial - but - I went through all of these steps - have opened command prompt and went through all of those steps too ... message I received was "The type of the file system is RAW. Hi, there are 488,129,887 secotors in my 250GB HDD scanning at approximately 1170 sectors per seconds, which suggests 4days and about 9hours to finish scanning. After nearly an hour, scanned only 671744 sectors and still at 1% with 0 files found and 0MB size found. Please advice, is this normal? What should I expect?
my external HDD a Toshiba has I/O error and wont show on my computer drive list. however when connected , it shows on the device manager, and on device management its unallocated with black color but cant be allocated because of that I/O error. computer and drivers are all updated. tried different usb ports and other computers but just the same. what else can I do?
All same to me, a used external Hitachi HDD (500gb) can't be opened showing I/O error, and which is shown on device manager as not-allocated and offline, not online.
When connected to PC desk, all folders are disclosed but as one folder is clicked to open, desk PC monitor gets to stand still and so, desk top PC has to be rebooted, after external HDD be disconnected. So I am very afraid of following this instruction of command prompt chkdsk : E that all memory in USB HDD may be formatted or deleted unfortunately.

You can try changing the device’s transfer mode by launching the Run command (Win + R) then type devmgmt.msc and press Enter to open the Device Manager, expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, and look for the channel that the external drive is connected to right-click on it and select Properties Go to the Advanced Settings tab and Set Transfer Mode to the one supported by your computer. If your PC doesn’t support UDMA, set it to PIO only.

If you’re using a USB flash drive, try disconnecting and reinserting, then trying again. If it doesn’t work, use a different USB cable, and try again. Connect the cable to a different external device and connect it to your system. Press Windows Key + X to open the Quick Access menu, then select Command Prompt (admin). Next, type chkdsk /f /r /x [your drive letter here] and press Enter. The scan could take a while, especially if there are many sectors requiring repair.

If that doesn't work you can try formatting the card, but note that this will erase all data on the card. Hello, I am having an issue, maybe you can help me with. I have a T5 Samsung 2tb external drive, It works on every one of my computers windows 7, MAC, etc. However, when I connect it to my windows 10 it crashes the entire system. It makes all USB un-operational. I am forced to go into the backdoor of the computer to get it back up again, it is a huge process. As I am a man of experimentation I did this several times to see if the drive would eventually work. Nope, every time it crashes the system. Have you ever heard of this? Hello, thanks for the video. I'm having this problem with an external ssd. I've connected the ssd to my other laptop and it works just fine while transferring files. I've connected the ssd to the laptop to where I originally had a problem with its usb type A port, but connected it to a usb port type c and it worked just fine. Then I tried the same thing with a thumb drive and had the same i/o error on the same usb A port while transferring files. So I deduce by your video that it is the usb A port. I tried doing the updating "USB Mass Storage Device" but that's not showing up in my computer while it even connected to my laptop. btw the laptop does indeed detect the external ssd, it just stops file transfers while connected to that specific usb A port. Does anyone know what else I should try?

so i had a hdd and my stupid brain made me install a win10 from the internet manually installing it from the dexstop not from the boot option when starting the pc(with a cd/dvd) the instalation went right and everything was fine.. the windows changed from win 7 to win10 and everything worked fine but i had to close to pc because was late so next day when i started the pc again the pc couldnt read the HDD at all i checked the bios and there was no HDD connected i checked many times with different cables the connectors and nothing same problem then i had a reserve .another hdd and i installed win 7 on it just to check the "my computer" or "my pc" for win 10 but i was on win 7 so i checkd the my computer to see and only the reserved hdd i had with the win 7 i installed recently i had.. the one with win 10 installed didnt show then i said why not to format the hdd and install a new win on it. so i put my cd installer and when ii was on the install page of win 7 after boot on the format tab there was all the hdd showing.. even the one i have the problem but i couldnt format or make a new partition.. or anything at all.. i couldnt even install any windows on it.didnt let me so i checked the internet and the results had me go to the folder on my dexstop with the alocated hdds so as expected the hdd show there but it was with a black color " unallocated" and i couldnt format or make a new partition or anything because i got that "Request could not be performed because of an I/O device Error" and i cant install or make any change to my hdd no matter what i do... its like its locked from inside or something .. like how the windows administrator permission thing work but worse . pls do u had this problem..is there any way to fix this?

my external drive cannot open in recoverit. it detect the first time..and says disconnect then cannot reconnect. and cant recognize external drive anymore

I used rufus to make my usb bootable while making it bootable, i accidently abort the process in between and now pendrive is showing current status read only - yes read only - no The USB is in GPT format and my system is MBR format.

the moment i plugged in my external hdd my whole pc slows down, and it pops the message to prompt for repair. it had the i/o error message as well, but after trying all the steps i still cant seem to solve the problem... any suggestions? T.T
None of that worked.
my error is D:\ is not accessible the request could not be performed because of an i/o system error
and none of these worked for me i used chkdsk D: /f /r /x and it didnt work it just said cannot open volume for direct access
and no updates for usb (my usb is 16gb toshiba btw, it doesnt have that green light when i put it in anymore)
still it shows the same error when i initial my external disk from disk management where it shows "unknown" "not initialized"

what if my drive has no letter and is in my laptop? .... it shows up as drive 0 and i cant do anything.. i have tried everything i can think of except taking the ssd hard drive out and plugging it to a card reader into another laptop.. could that be an option to fixing it?

Ok. So here's my problem I was having issues with errors on my HDD windows 10. Thankfully i made a recovery drive using a usb stick. I got a bunch of bad block errors so i did a chkdsk fix repair. Upon reboot i got a bsod ntfs error that kept happening everytime it rebooted. Ive tried numerous things. I used the usb recovery to get into recovery mode. Startup repair failed. I tried toreinstall windows via the recover from a drive that failed 3 times intil now even though i can see my hdd in bios if i try to boot manually i get an error that no drive is detected. I got the advice tondo the bootrec commands from command prompt that is FixMbr FixBoot ScanOs and Rebuildbcd. It successfully did fixmbr. I got an error fixboot access denied. Successfuly found 1 windows installation in E:\Windows but when i try to rebuildbcd i get am i/o error. Any ideas?
None of these have worked. I did something right prior because it wasn’t even showing on disk management. Now it is but, can’t initialize it no matter what.

hello wondershare --- have "liked & subscribed" .... great tutorial - but - I went through all of these steps - have opened command prompt and went through all of those steps too ... message I received was "The type of the file system is RAW. CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives."
and (have already downloaded Wondershare Recoverit) and have tried to have Recoverit/Wondershare "scan" my external drive (Passport) but nothing happens during the "scanning" process ..... it simply appears to scan indefinitely without yielding any results --... Hi, there are 488,129,887 secotors in my 250GB HDD scanning at approximately 1170 sectors per seconds, which suggests 4days and about 9hours to finish scanning. After nearly an hour, scanned only 671744 sectors and still at 1% with 0 files found and 0MB size found. Please advice, is this normal? What should I expect?

my external HDD a Toshiba has I/O error and wont show on my computer drive list. however when connected , it shows on the device manager, and on device management its unallocated with black color but cant be allocated because of that I/O error. computer and drivers are all updated. tried different usb ports and other computers but just the same. what else can I do?
All same to me, a used external Hitachi HDD (500gb) can't be opened showing I/O error, and which is shown on device manager as not-allocated and offline, not online.
When connected to PC desk, all folders are disclosed but as one folder is clicked to open, desk PC monitor gets to stand still and so, desk top PC has to be rebooted, after external HDD be disconnected. So I am very afraid of following this instruction of command prompt chkdsk : E that all memory in USB HDD may be formatted or deleted unfortunately.

You can try changing the device’s transfer mode by launching the Run command (Win + R) then type devmgmt.msc and press Enter to open the Device Manager, expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, and look for the channel that the external drive is connected to right-click on it and select Properties Go to the Advanced Settings tab and Set Transfer Mode to the one supported by your computer. If your PC doesn’t support UDMA, set it to PIO only.

Hi there, thank you for your question! Try restarting your pc to see if that solves the issue if not try reseat the cables connecting your external drive to your computer. Do this at both ends. If you’re using a USB flash drive, try disconnecting and reinserting, then trying again. If it doesn’t work, use a different USB cable, and try again. Connect the cable to a different external device and connect it to your system. Press Windows Key + X to open the Quick Access menu, then select Command Prompt (admin). Next, type chkdsk /f /r /x [your drive letter here] and press Enter. The scan could take a while, especially if there are many sectors requiring repair.

If that doesn't work you can try formatting the card, but note that this will erase all data on the card. If the card still does not work after formatting, it may be a physical issue with the card and you may need to replace it.

Hello, I am having an issue, maybe you can help me with. I have a T5 Samsung 2tb external drive, It works on every one of my computers windows 7, MAC, etc. However, when I connect it to my windows 10 it crashes the entire system. It makes all USB un-operational. I am forced to go into the backdoor of the computer to get it back up again, it is a huge process. As I am a man of experimentation I did this several times to see if the drive would eventually work. Nope, every time it crashes the system. Have you ever heard of this? Can you recommend any solutions? Do you think an upgrade to windows 11 would solve it? I can't reach SAMSUNG for my life. Thank you for your time... Nio
PS: I have done every troubleshooting thing I can think of. The computer just will not accept the drive. When I go into device manager the drive is acknowledged but there is an exclamation point next to it. Update drivers, all that doesn't work

Hello, thanks for the video. I'm having this problem with an external ssd. I've connected the ssd to my other laptop and it works just fine while transferring files. I've connected the ssd to the laptop to where I originally had a problem with its usb type A port, but connected it to a usb port type c and it worked just fine. Then I tried the same thing with a thumb drive and had the same i/o error on the same usb A port while transferring files. So I deduce by your video that it is the usb A port. I tried doing the updating "USB Mass Storage Device" but that's not showing up in my computer while it even connected to my laptop. btw the laptop does indeed detect the external ssd, it just stops file transfers while connected to that specific usb A port. Does anyone know what else I should try?

Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected.

so i had a hdd and my stupid brain made me install a win10 from the internet manually installing it from the dexstop not from the boot option when starting the pc(with a cd/dvd)
the instalation went right and everything was fine.. the windows changed from win 7 to win10 and everything worked fine
but i had to close to pc because was late
so next day when i started the pc again the pc couldnt read the HDD at all
i checked the bios and there was no HDD connected
i checked many times with different cables the connectors and nothing same problem
then i had a reserve .another hdd and i installed win 7 on it just to check the "my computer" or "my pc" for win 10 but i was on win 7
so i checkd the my computer to see and only the reserved hdd i had with the win 7 i installed recently i had.. the one with win 10 installed didnt show
then i said why not to format the hdd and install a new win on it. so i put my cd installer and when ii was on the install page of win 7 after boot on the format tab there was all the hdd showing.. even the one i have the problem but i couldnt format or make a new partition.. or anything at all.. i couldnt even install any windows on it.didnt let me
so i checked the internet and the results had me go to the folder on my dexstop with the alocated hdds so as expected the hdd show there but it was with a black color " unallocated" and i couldnt format or make a new partition or anything because i got that "Request could not be performed because of an I/O device Error"
and i cant install or make any change to my hdd no matter what i do...
its like its locked from inside or something .. like how the windows administrator permission thing work but worse .
