    Hey Shawn and Mel 👋 don't think you noticed this but as the cab drove off, the sign in front of the house said it was a future home for runaway girls by Fancy Rae Baker, In loving memory of my mom, "To thine own self be true " 👍 Still love this song ♥️😊

    "You know I might have been born just plain white trash, but Fancy was my name!" I love that line, especially the determination in Reba's voice when she said that.. By the way, this song is a cover of a song originally recorded by Bobbie Gentry.

    This is a cover of Bobbie Gentrys song "Fancy"(1969). Which you have reacted to a few weeks ago. Bobbie Gentry was a singer/songwriter and producer. One of the first women to have ever done that. Reba did a great job of Bobbie's song.

  • @rettathomas837
    @rettathomas837 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Bobbie Gentry wrote it, but Reba McEntire slayed this song, this song is so deep, her mother didn’t want her to have the life she had, her husband left her and their two children, and they were going to die, I’m sure she raised her daughter to be a good girl, but reality was hitting her in the face, and it was only the option left for her daughter, so she took it and told her daughter don’t let me down , do something with your life, survive, Live.

  • @walkofnails2923
    @walkofnails2923 2 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    I was INVESTED in this story when the song came out. I had some rough teen years and could empathize with Fancy. She had very little choice. Her mom is sick & dying, her father gone, no other family to take her in, no money, and she’s 18 so no foster home or benefits minors might get. I was so happy she was strong and made it through. I know a lot of people thought her mama was pimping her out, but mom knew Fancy would be alone and could only rely on herself to survive.

    • @victorianewton2426

      Benefits that foster kids get? As an ex foster kid I'd like to know what the benefits were. That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

      @@victorianewton2426 In my state the child receives free healthcare for most things and some college funds. If you were ever in foster care, you can be designated as an independent student which means you will be eligible for a pell grant. If you were in foster care because of the death of a parent, you may receive some social security benefits as well. It just all depends on the situation.

      @@victorianewton2426 Hi!, Sorry that you found my opinion on this offensive but I don't think you understand the situation of doing whatever it takes to live. Maybe you've never had to choose between eating or putting a roof over your head or clothes on your back but for some of us, we've been dealt a bad hand in life & no matter how hard you try to dig yourself out of the hole, the dirt flies in faster than you can imagine. Myself, I've worked 3 jobs at once, while paying for 14 credit hours in a spring semester of college but had to take a beating just to have a bed to sleep in. Doesn't mean I slept with someone for money, but was humiliated constantly for trying to better myself. That was a long time ago but I remember climbing out & was lucky to have a roof, utilities & bologna sandwich once a day just to get by & that was before living in my car in a park & cleaning up in a gas station bathroom. One day when I write about the circumstances, I will send you the book & I hope that you will have a little more compassion for my situation & others who have similar experiences. God Bless You and your family & Merry Christmas!!!

    The emotion in her voice for this is on a level all Reba's. And the strings, the way they slowly built up as she sang "I knew what I had to do, and I made myself this solemn vow: I was gonna be a lady some day, though I didn't know when, or how", I get goosebumps every single time!
    This song, and much of what Reba sings, is one of the best examples I can give as to what country music is, at the very core. A story! Good music of any genre should be a story that people can relate to, and that is so rare these days, barely a dying ember of what was once a roaring fire. I'm glad to have been able to enjoy this kind of music in my youth. It helped shape some of who I am now.

    I absolutely love you both! You get it! You have to walk in someone shoes to understand the choices they have made or will make. My mother and father made choices for me (not like these, but still life-changing choices) that I found out about later in my adult life. Instead of getting mad & angry, I put myself in their shoes and realized exactly why they made those choices and I understood. They made me the person I am today, which I like to think is a good, kind, compassionate, yet strong and independent person. Love your perspective always💓💓💓

    You know what I like most about reactions to songs like this? They teach us EMPATHY for each other! Not only do we feel empathy for the fictional characters in the songs, but through music, we come to understand that despite our differences in ages, our differences in races, and even our differences in religions and nationalities, we’re all human. We share the same problems, the same feelings, and we face the same challenges. The better we can make life for the least among us, the richer we can all be. Thanks for the reaction and for being who you are!

Secondly, the Kelly Clarkson live version from CMT Crossroads,and lastly, the 3rd and most recent, from Rebas new 3 cd set, which dropped just last month,is a version with the ultimate Dolly Parton. Both have been in the business for 90+ years combined and had NEVER recorded before this collaboration! But please please please react to all 3 in this order,and yes,it helps to view them in the correct order!!! Cannot wait. Let's just say the original starts things off with a blast! I don't think Reba's version was better than Bobbie Gentry's. Bobbie's version was released in 1970 and Reba's in 1991. That's a big difference in technology right there. The audio is dimmer on the Gentry version. Productions got more extravagant as years went by. Bobbie is the one who wrote this song. I listened to it as a young kid and it made me sad back then. I just went and watched the reaction to Bobbie's version, and Shawn, even you were astounded and wowed by the song & story in it, seemed to be just as much as to this version.

    This is such a "Pretty Woman" fantasy. Reality would have been that a poor girl from backwoods New Orleans would not have been meeting Aristocrats- nowhere near the same circles- THIS girl would have ended up strung out on meth, turning tricks for whatever money she could get. That would have been HER reality. It makes a great song, though. Good reaction.

    I've always hated this song. No, there is NO excuse for putting your own child in harm's way, not to mention pushing your barely 18-year-old daughter into the arms of predatory men to make a buck. It's vile and disgusting. As a parent, go get a job! I like Reba, but I can't stand this song. My mom had a lot more than two children along with a husband who wouldn't work. She worked three jobs to keep our home going. As a parent, you do what you have to do to put food on the table, but that does NOT include using and abusing your children.

    More like two. But.
    Let her cry-hootie and the blowfish
    Rain- folk soul revival
    I swear I’ll chip in a fund just for these two. They are two good not to be heard. I PROMISE that you’ll love them both.
    PLEASE
    they just both hit home for me and I’m sure others will/can relate

    Please listen to Reba’s “She Thinks His Name Was John” that was released in the early 90s when AIDS was still in it’s infancy.

    If you want to see a video that will hit you almost as hard as this one, look up Reba McIntire and Brooks & Dunn singing"Cowgirls dont cry". or "Have you seen her/him". Both songs are powerful

    Mel picked up on the scenario a LOT faster than Shawn.... Regrettably as a woman, we know what is expected, happens and is inevitable of certain scenarios.

    Was listening to this song in the car on my way home today tearing up, lip quivering...Lord people, things hit different as you get older. This used to be a powerhouse, feminist power song, and it still is, but now, I just think about how helpless and scared they all must've felt.

    This reaction is exactly what should be had when someone hears this song for the first time, shock, sadness, understanding, and the face of being proud…. Love it. You have a subscriber ❤️

    If you like this version of the song, check out Bobbie Gentry's version. She wrote it, produced it and recorded it first. Reba's cover is very faithful to the original.

    Bobbie Gentry did the original song but her style and presentation was for 1960's television. Reba's video version along with her voice tells a more complete story, plus Reba also has a hell of a voice and acting ability.

    Kelly Clarkson did a version for Kennedy Center Honors when Reba got inducted!…..check out that version too!

    You can tell Shawn was starting to figure it out when she said, "Mama spent every last penny. We had to buy me a dancing dress." The wheels in his brain were starting to turn. You can see it in his face and body language. Shawn you caught on fast. It seem to be that in most of the videos i watch of people reacting to this song the guy seems to catch on a little faster than the girls. Amazing reaction.

    The hard-hitting Southern Rock groove is kinda like the sweetness added to a nasty medicine to help it go down a little easier. But dang, this is one of the most horrible stories I've ever heard put to music. Tragic, sad, and genius at the same time.

    I love yalls reaction! This was a very controversial song when it came out because people started realizing it was about prostitution. Please react to Rebas song You Lie! Her vocal range is so amazing!

    Never seen this version before. Made me cry. Listen to Nights that the lights went out in Georgie by Vickie Lawrence. Reba also covers that one, but Vickie Lawrence imo does it better.
