Yes The Hobit is so nice and as for Garvey the owner, he is so very nice and holds the torch for his grandparrents that opened the place. What a veiw and YUM! and then YUM again!
I remember Jonah & the Whale. The DIPLOMAT HOTEL was where I got my start in the hotel business the summer 1971. Bert Cropper, the previous mayor of OC was one of the owners. Over the years the hotel was sold & changed names several times. Nancy Hale & family were owners @ 1 time & I worked for them one summer. When I started @ the Diplomat in 1971 Chuck Berry was the GM. He was a great manager. I managed hotels all over the US & the last hotel I retired from in 2009 was the 200 room Holiday Inn Airport in West Palm Beach, FL that was owned by the Phillips family of ocean City. Brice & Shirley Phillips were, by far, the BEST OWNERS I ever worked for during my 38 year career. (RIP)
I think the last time I was in OC, Popeyes Chicken was in the 94th street Plaza. I'm guessing 2015. or 2016. Loved coming down in the Spring and Fall. But even now, the prices are so f'ing high. I stayed at the Seabay Inn for $48/ night, and breakfast at the restaurant in the morning was fantastic! Off season is the best time to visit!
Anybody who grew up in the 80's and went to Ocean City every summer spent more than a few minutes in Roses. Walked in there to get sun tan lotion a few years ago and the store was almost empty. I was really surprised that the store was still open. Decent parking for overflow though.
Great update! Hope Roses finds a new place. I’m surprised Jonah has lasted this long. It was never great food. But it was a good price for families. After Hall’s left there hasn’t been a good buffet in ocean City
One of the things that drew me to oc md. was an affordable vacation at a quaint beach town where you can go to a bar and sit and still have a good conversation with locals. Not much quant about it anymore just crowded and overpriced. sort of like Florida and California. I suppose a good thing if that's what one is into.
There is lots of eye soars, hopefully town will get things going as this sort of stuff being left to age out can hurt a town. Tough for business to survive in a May to September environment
Its crazy how much has changed since the first time we went there in 2001, more development (housing/commercial), but when the area has become a place to vacation/live, its bound to happen.
Bayside Skillet opened in 1977. I was 24 and newly married. I am 70 now and the thing is still open and I'm still married to the same baby doll. Damnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!1
We stopped there a few years ago for breakfast after reading lying BS internet reviews. My wife wanted a pan cake but they don't offer them. Ok she asked for two slices if toast. Nope don't offer that . My meal wasn't that good but they charged an arm & two.leg dogs for a shit glass of orange juice. Only place in 25 years coming down to OC a summer week, off-season week and one long weekend that we were disappointed.

I stayed at the flagship last year on a girl's trip... and it needed all the love it could get...definitely sad to see staples of OC go though. Especially for our pockets lol.
I never went to Jonah and the Whale but it seems the buffets are closing one by one as are the family owned motels along motel row. It's sad but a sign of the times. The same thing happened where I vacationed as a kid and still do in Wildwood Crest NJ although many motels still exist. It makes me feel old as I am at 62 to see all these places close. On a positive note we just booked the holiday Inn at 66th street for the first week of September. I Can't wait!
The only buffet left is thr Bonfire. Remember when there used to be a lot of different buffets? Ember, Phillips, halls...times are changing for sure. Hope you enjoy your trip when you come here!
Ocean city has been changing for years. My family would go every summer in the mid seventies. Good lord what a time in ocean city. We would stay at Terri a while on dorchester and watch people come in the city. Good times. I think I cried one time heading home.
I can only imagine how much it has changed. My father in law has been going here for a long time. He was telling me for a while it was just open dunes from the end of the boardwalk up to where the Carousel Hotel is now. I can't even picture that!
Either of the two Bad Monkeys are great. Bring your appetite. Looking forward to checking out OC 2nd week of May in conjunction with our golf trip. Thanks for the updates. Mainstay Suites, stayed twice in two different locations. Not a fan, got burnt twice, never again for me.

that ACME used to be an A&P then a SuperFresh .... was really nice for getting food shopping when we used to stay at the Sea Watch. Hobbit is AMAZING but not cheap. its the last of the true fine dinning in OC.

We shopped in the nice clean well stocked Ack- A - me ( Philly pronunciation for Acme ) last Monday. Hope the new one is at least the same size . Purchased " crab necks marked not fit for human consumption " there for last 25 years to go crabbing near once great Fager Island three foot bridges. Used to have 15 to 20 oeopke crabbing there carching s lit if undersided crabs but now I'm the only person crabbing there and only caught 1 keeper crab and maybe 5 crabs in four attempts . Always throw yhem right vack, actually place a crab two foot grom edge if foot bridge and smart crabs just about always take the shortest walk to jump off bridge and back into the water.
Just seen rt 1 is shut down the ocean broke the dune? Thanks for the updates. I was down a couple weeks ago and will be down in the next couple weeks. Hope to run into you one day. Stay safe!
Dude what a drag about Jonah & the Whale Riptide is one of my favorite chill outs at the beach! Don’t want to see it go - the elusive $2 beer ! I knew it wouldn’t last 😯🤗
I hope you can get out to Boxcar 40 in Pittsville for a crabcake review and a side review of the deviled eggs before they close. Permanently closing April 28th. I miss that place more than some of the places in OC and Berlin. Such amazing food and Paul is a great guy. I hope he has something else in the works.
NOOOOOOOO! They really are closing?! Once Boxcar on Main left I stopped following them. I believe Paul is a Marine vet, so of course I have to support him. We'll try to get over there before they close.
I remember being in OCMD, I had just got there after my 4hour ride. Stopped at McDonald’s and was lucky to catch them demolishing the motel that was across from Anthony’s liquors(where the La Quinta in now located) can’t remember the name of the motel but, think it was light blue in color.
This is going to sound like a dumb question but I live in rural mountainous Pennsylvania. We don't have bike and bus lanes like that where I am. We're coming down this summer. Is the bus lane for right turns only. I assumed you don't drive in them at all but I saw you get in it when you went to the mini golf.
It can get confusing if you haven't navigated them before. The bus lane is for busses and right turns. You can't drive in them except if making a right turn. I pulled over in front of the mini golf because the bus wasn't anywhere near me. If you continually ride in the bus lane (like to avoid traffic) the police will pull you over.
When is Acme coming? That will be great as the one that is there is dated for sure. The whole lot is a mess. Would love up grade with more stores, tough business spot to make money for smaller businesses.
I'm not exactly sure when they will be going in....I believe it will probably be a while since everything seems to move slow with the approval process. Curious to know what they are going to do with the old BB&T bank up front.
Hey JayB , I think you duck hunt because of decoys. Do you make Duck Confit for you and the family ever? Please try it some day with a recipe that is French. I think you will thank me. Thanks for the Video.
The end is near for Bonfire. A couple years ago when they went to mostly fried food and no crab legs,(unless you pay crazy extra) they sealed their fate with the increased prices on top of it all.

If owners are bleeding money then I guess thats why they sell. Unfortunately they may not respect the heritage and icons. Corp. will gladly step in, all about more $$$. I am not sure there are any real mom and pop hotels/motels left. They seem to be owned by foreign investors bleeding them dry. They do not put anything back in to repair/fix. It is amazing at the lack of municipal safety inspections, electrical and structural in the hotel/motel industry in MD. I am guessing as long as they get their hands on the tourist taxes they do not care and turn the other way. I do not think the codes in the rest of MD are as lax as they are in OC. When someone gets hurt or dies they all will point fingers. I have been stationed in 3rd world countries that have better lodging facilities...Just my observations from 20 years going there...
I think those hotels were bought cheap and are selling now at $4M+. So these older owners are getting to retirement age and are selling. Sadly, we know a mom & pop hotel and they've said business is hard as a mom & pop. Expenses are hurting them where the corporate hotels have the cash flow to maintain everything.
