    Amazing kit. I own this config., play very little jazz..mostly Top 40/rock/country and have never had more compliments from sound guys, guitar & bass players, singers, dudes just at the club hanging out. I've owned the Yamaha Maple Custom, Pearl Masters, etc and honestly this IS the sound that's in my head. Love it.

      Could not have said it better myself. I have the Cat Classic w/ 20 inch Bass Drum. I have gotten more compliments on this kit from other drummers than anything else i have ever used and i have been playing for 40 years !!
      This kit should not sound as good as it does for the money you spend but it does..Sometimes things are just right.
      Enjoy !!

      +tony giovingo VERY cool Tony. I've reached out to Gretsch about separates (mainly 24" kick) and while priced ok the 120+ day lead time is a bummer. I also went back to Remo clear ambassadors on the toms and its next-level stuff. LOL. Good luck!

    Just got these for Christmas as a second kit that affords more portability than my main kit. But I see trouble on the horizon as these have already supplanted by larger 6-piece Mapex Armory kit as the kit I am most likely to get behind first. Still need to swap out the snare head and do some tuning on it, but the toms and bass are AMAZINGLY rich and punchy once tuned...even with stock heads. Super happy with this kit

    Why pay big money, when these good sounding drums, which are easy to carry around, are so much less expensive.

    • @ramencurry6672
      @ramencurry6672 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have these drums in my studio. The stock snare is not that good but everything else sounds so amazingly professional that I have no reason to upgrade to a more expensive set. If I was a professional drummer on tour with roadies, I would get the more expensive drums since they are built for better durability. For recording in a studio, these Catalina models are perfect.

    I picked up a kit recently. It has been a difficult journey trying to figure out what they are exactly. I have narrowed it down somewhat. It is the same finish as this kit shown, it is most likely a Taiwan made Catalina kit. The seller told me it was 20 years old. It has a square badge, and the floor tom is mounted to my (very heavy duty) cymbal stand. I wish I could verify that it is maple pr birch, but I’m thinking its maple. Anyway, I just put Remo coated ambassadors on it, and it sounds terrific. I am trying to find when Gretsch started using the silver coating on the inside, as this kit does not. There is so much misinformation and a lack of qualified information about these drums. Any input is welcome!

  • @jjcdrumplay
    @jjcdrumplay 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I once had a Rogers kit, first kit passed around the family since late 70s, early 80s, i have no idea what that thing was made of...Grey interior. Floor tom had to be a 15, and all the heads seem different than any modern sizes.

    My kit is a "New Round Badge" Catalina Club Jazz kit from before 2016 and I can't see anything different from you describe. What exactly did change, other than a different selection of shell coatings and wraps?

  • @roybeckerman9253

    Good drummers make these good drums sound great.
    Bad drummers make expensive kits, even DW, sound very ordinary.

    • @frankspikes4867
      @frankspikes4867 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's all personal preference. I watch a lot of videos, play a lot of different sets in stores. The major aspects of drums, heads, bearing edges, and tuning. Then when you add mics, that ads another aspect.
      My preference is an open, worm , big woody sound. Very akin to bebop, or 60s early 70s psychedelic rock. Single ply coated heads tuned up. if you ask todays modern drummer of the gospel variety the set up is different. A two ply head tuned medium, with a little muffling throughout the set. Sharp bearing edges. Makes for punchy tone, wick quick decay. Boxy if you ask me. Not my bag at all. Another thing to consider is application. What kind of music, and venues are you playing.

    What is the shell difference from these and the first line of these with the center lugs and the 16”-18” kick kit? I used to have one of those and loved it but were those 45 degree edges or 30 as well?

    • @boomerguy9935
      @boomerguy9935 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I read somewhere that Gretsch started using the 30-degree bearing edge in the 1930's and have been using only this edge ever since.

    • @Monsterdrumma
      @Monsterdrumma 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@boomerguy9935 It seems so just I believe the 3 plies like the new broadkasters have a inward 30 degree edge with a round over which a USA custom is an outer 30 degree edge with no round over so a bit louder and explosive these are fatter and a bit more subdued or less resonant. You can’t go wrong with Gretsch no matter which kit you choose.

  • @johncollins5552
    @johncollins5552 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Does it have thin shells like the classic kits? Most modern kits sound different because they have more plies and are heavier in general. Most jazz players want that classic sound.BTW,most drummers obsess about the drumsound forgetting that real old jazz kits had real animal skins on that give that sound today's heads can't replicate.

      I have this kit. It comes with Remo Ambassador Coated batter and Remo Ambassador Clear resonant on the snare and toms. The bass drum has a Remo Powerstroke 3 Coated resonant head and I can't remember the what the batter was - possibly the same, but I changed it about 10 yearrs ago. Gretsch logo on all heads. Wonderful sound from the factory, but it's up to you to tune it to your personal taste.

    I love gretsch. But Lord have mercy. They need a color face lift. I'm mean come on. Dw has 500 colors stains wraps sparkles. Gretsch has nothing. What 10 7 6 not many ootions. Everytime I see a Catalina Maple kit. You got two or three of the same old same old. Beautiful drums ok. But it's getting boring. Gretsch has got a fantastic drumset. And yes they got some cool stains and wraps. But not really that many. I think they would sell a ton more drums if they caught everyone by surprise and came out with some new wraps. Stains. Custom drums sets. Why not? Look at Dw. Man it's like a big candy store of color. They have so many beautiful color's wraps stains and collector colors. That's why drum work shop sells so many kits. And they sell them for more. That's one thing I love about gretsch. They sure are a quality and very affordable drum kit.

      I've had four Catalina kits new and used (several years old) and they are fabulous drums, that will last you a lifetime. Dry rot is a problem I've never experienced nor heard about as regards Gretsch Catalina drums. The mahogany and 30 degree bearing edge combine to give a warm, round, full tone throughout the tuning range. Great drums!
