Gretsch resurrects a classic in the Renown RN2 drum series. Back are the celebrated 7-ply maple shells with 30° bearing edges and Gretsch's hallmark Silver Sealer interiors, which look and sound every bit as glorious as they have for the last 15 years. What's new in the RN2 is its USA classic features - 302 hoops and a bass-mounted tom holder - along with some modern touches, including redesigned black round badges.

Gretsch is quality. It’s a top tier pro level soundings drum and it’s relatively affordable. If you’re on a budget and can’t spend $3500 on a pro level kit, Gretsch can be your friend.

These are my favorite drums of all time. Sound great but also has that rawness in them. I played so many gigs and done some many studio recordings using 24/16/13 Renown kit in matte white finish.
Funny thing is that I never wanted to buy them but when I sat behind the kit in music store rest of drums become irrevelant to me. The differecne in sound was so big comparing to other kits. It felt so natural plaing the drums. I never had that feeling before and after in my drumming life.

@sirsethward It’s been about a year, how do you feel know about the Gretsch R2 kit? I’m considering the same kit, same config, same wrap, but can’t decide between this kit, the Pearl Session Studio (same config), or the Tama Starclassic walnut-birch. The Tamas sound too focused, whereas the Gretsch R2’s sound big and dynamic. It’s coming down to Tama’s fit, finish, hardware vs the sound of the R2’s. Any opinion and advice you have would help a great deal.

I got this kit in the tobacco burst finish, 50% off as a floor model from Guitar Center. Second best deal I've gotten on a drum set. 🤣The kit itself is GREAT, but I have a couple knit-picks regarding the mounting system.
It's not very good. For starters, the 13" rack tom is pretty heavy, and the ball joint can't support the weight of the drum in most positions. Crank it as tight as possible, and there is still a good chance it will sink; potentially hitting the bass drum and messing up the beautiful satin finish. If the drum is a little too flat, or a little too angled, expect this to happen (it is possible I got a faulty system, I suppose, but I don't think so. It certainly doesn't feel like it).
The new GTS suspension system feels like style over substance, to me. It actually chokes the drum quite a bit, if it isn't tuned to just the right range. Pulls on the 2 tension rods and causes some issues. The biggest problem I have with it is that it makes the drum VERY challenging to tune. It was so bad that I thought that it was out of round. I'd get the drum tuned up to have great resonance and sustain, mount it, and the sound I'd get was a wimpy, "thud."
When you do get everything finally set up just right and get around these issues, this is THE best sounding kit for the money, bar-none. Can't recommend them enough. They're beautiful, sound huge; and are very well made pro-quality drums (although quality control may be a factor, the innermost ply of my bass drum is frankly jacked, but they put the silver sealer on and shipped it anyway. It still sounds good and doesn't really affect the drum in any way. I got mine for such a steal that I can't be too upset about it. But anyway. I digress).
I plan on swapping out the mount (you have to buy 2 new lugs to do so, by the way) and hopefully finding a cover plate for the bass drums mounting system, to give it a more classic "virgin" look.
TL;DR: These are great drums. Just anticipate some difficulties early on.

    • @daynnethedrummer684
      @daynnethedrummer684 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Watching this video, Nic doesn't even seem to have these issues. I'm probably gonna take the ball joint apart and rough it up a bit, to see if maybe it just needs more grip. Still probably gonna change how I mount it in some fashion, regardless; just to see if it makes that big of a difference. I have an old RIMS mount that should work fine.
For what it's worth though, the rest of the kit is built like a tank, and the 302 hoops are probably my new favorites, for toms anyway.
But yeah, I've heard mixed things about their hardware. I know I had a friend who popped the lug right off one of their maple snares when he was cranking it up. 😂

@@daynnethedrummer684 I never had a Gretsch kit (never been a great fan), so maybe I can't talk too much, but if a kit has such those construction issues that you said, it's nothing but a piece shit. Hello, mike d! At the moment, Gretsch is not offering the Renown preconfigured as a 2 up, 2 down setup, but you can certainly order an additional drum a la carte to build such a setup.
      Thanks for the interest!

Dale Bass he kind of did that already a few years ago when they were named Keystone X. The only differences are they’re making them without wraps now and I think they put a back cut on the bearing edge? Oh and I believe they jacked up the price a few hundred dollars?

drumfanatik316 yeah I knew he did the keystone x but like the classic oak can be ordered in a club date configuration with the double sided lugs and and grey inner ply so I’d like to that

I always thought Gretsch Tom's only went with five lugs? If I'm not mistaken I see 6 on the rack Tom. Is that because of the change of ownership?

G'day Sweetwater, I've been watching your reviews for a year now and for all the great kits that have been reviewed, the bassdrum sound is a let down every time.
Other reviewers get a nice miked up bassdrum sound, but Sweetwater has had the same sound in every review.
I've heard other reviewers showcase the difference between a 22"x18" bass to a 24"x14" bass for example. Massive difference. Sweetwater, you have had the same sound out of the bassdrums no matter the dimensions.
I do not know if you are not allowed to give the watchers the the miked up sound or if your drum techs don't know what they're doing, but as I said, every bassdrum I've heard through Sweetwater sounds the same.
I'll give you more opportunity in the future but for now, you've lost me as a subscriber.
    Don't give up though.
Thanks for the reviews I've watched.
    Respect. S
