10 years is how long it takes me to learn some games!
Very True!
1. Puerto Rico
2. BattleTech
3. Yahtzee Poker Deluxe
4. Advance to Boardwalk
5. Mille Bornes
6. Mystery Mansion
7. Viticulture _with_ Tuscany
8. Takenoko
The more games I play, the more I appreciate older games. Your list is spot on!
Besides the ones you listed, there are also Concordia, Brass (Lancashire), Die Macher, Caylus, Eclipse, Dominant Species... Games that are so, so good - and many are being republished now.
survive! is a banger of a game like 40 years on. interested to see how the reprint/streamline goes
Concordia! Samurai!
Civilization (1980) from Avalon Hill would be my #1 easily. I've been playing it for over 2 decades now. What a great game. I never get tired of it.
What about Magic Realm?? Have you ever heard of it?!!
Lol, I've never heard of Last Will, but it's basically the idea from the movie, "Brewster's Millions". Sounds fun!
Several of my favorites are on your list. A couple of big omissions are El Grande and Hansa Teutonica :-)
Age of Innovation works well at 2 (I too do not play Terra Mystica at 2, I prefer it at 4, then 3, then 5). Also prefer Terra Mystica to Gaia Project (but Age of Innovation is my favourite out of the three).
10 years is not old.
I'll need this again in 2034!
I prefer older games as a new person to the hobby since all the videos on how to play are out, the ratings show what is truly shining and tons of expansions are available. Legendary Encounters Predators, Castle Ravenloft, Dead of Winter, Ascension, Battle for greyport, Aeons End.
38:09 Takenoko!!! You mean the panda game?!!!!!!
10. High Society
9. For Sale
8. RA
7. Pandemic
6. Tobago
5. Sentinels of the Multiverse
4. Concordia
3. Xia
2. Star Wars: Imperial Assault
1. Orleans
Great list! However, your number two definitely proves that we are not in complete agreement on all things board gaming...just most things. My number one is and probably always will remain, though more for nostalgia than anything else, Acquire.
@@ChadHensley Acquire still holds up!! It's one of my favourites to watch at WSBG, I love being able to track who has what and see the flow of money.
2:22 Where can I find that list (of your personal Top 20 Games)?
Thanks!
@@JJ_TheGreat should be the video linked at the end
@@RoomandBoardReviewsThanks!
This list is ON POINT, Chris! With you 💯 on pretty much every selection that i have experienced playing. Seasons... it IS good on BGA but nothing beats the IRL chonky dice feels, but best with players of similar level of experience with the game. Five Tribes is sooooo good and I am so bad at it. But I love this game. I just hate playing with other people (A.P.). lol Could go on and on... GREAT LIST.
Love me some Five Tribes! In my top faves
Defenders of the realm
If I were to do a top 100 list, I'm quite sure that at least half of the list would be more than _20_ years old.
And Agricola wouldn't make the list, though M:tG, Seventh Sea CCG, and Legend of the Five Rings definitely would. 8-) (I have about the same reaction to Agricola as you do to M:tG -- I get that some people really like the game, but I have to assume it's a result of brain damage or a very sad childhood.)
Your voice sounds a little like Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs. Interesting video.
Shogun not getting mentioned 😢
1.) 7 Wonders
2.) Betrayal at House on the Hill (everyone's favorite game to call "overrated" even though nobody seems to like it much)
3.) War of the Ring
4.) King of Tokyo
5.) Small World
6.) El Grande (I'm kind of winging it, after this)
7.) Machi Koro ?
8.) For Sale ?
9.) Shark ?
@chrisarney8265 I REALLY hate Betrayal At House On The Hill.
It was the game that made me dislike asymmetric games.
@@JJ_TheGreat And that seems to be closer to the consensus based on people to whom I talk.
9:06 What about the gears in Windmill Valley?!
El Grande!
@@jean-francoisdumas2325 - I just got El Grande as a gift two days ago.
Elysium is a fantastic game also!
I don’t play board games online… There was a reason I had gotten into the board game hobby - and it was to have some time in which we are away from technology - and throw back to simpler times in the old days.
17:14 Also, 5 makes the game take so long. Therefore, I would recommend playing at 4 (but as I said, Age of Innovation is just better…)
The best game ie Citadels did not even show up in the 100, Wow xd i mean it Got better never editions, sure, but ....
HeroQuest
14:52 Yes, Age of Innovation is better than Terra Mystica in almost every way. I see no reason to play TM now that there is AoI… For example, the variable setup is just so much better in AoI - so you can play the factions differently. Also, the gameplay is deeper, with the books.
Last Will fell hard on my ratings. Every play it fell a point to where now its a 3/10 for me. But I also really dislike most modern euros.
@@EngMadison that's fair. It's definitely one that I've bounced back and forth between. I sometimes find it very frustrating, but when I'm in the mood for bidding for player turn order this one hits well
@RoomandBoardReviews I've always felt they needed to drop all the other elements and turn it into a card game focusing on the combos, silly narrative, and such. Like what San Juan is to Puerto Rico.
But ten yesrs is not an order game. I would say 20 us minimum to call it order.
most of them are though in the list
I don’t like Five Tribes. It was the game which made me discover that I don’t like games which are overly tactical.
What I really don’t like is that it is a multi-player (as in more than 2 player) game, in which the board state changes EVERY turn, based on what other players do - so therefore, it is impossible to plan your turn until RIGHT BEFORE your turn comes along - which contributes to the Analysis Paralysis (AP) - and I am the ultimate objectivist to begin with, so I am looking at every move and am quite AP-prone anyway.
But, for example, in a 4-player game - depending on how things go, you might go 7 times without having a turn (if you bid to go 1st one round - and then end up going last the next round). Also, as I said, between turns, there is just nothing for you to do except for waiting until right before your turn. You can’t plan your move ahead.
Agricola should only be in two lists:
1. Most overrated game of all time.
2. Biggest disappointing game of all time.
I guess this shows that liking board games is very subjective. Agricola is my all time no.1 favorite game.
@@Emsworth377 - Ouch! 🤷
@EfrainRiveraJunior haha!😂 just out of curiosity, what would you say your favorite game/s would be?
@@Emsworth377 - My favorite games in order are:
1. Puerto Rico
2. Viticulture with Tuscany
3. BattleTech/CityTech
4. Dinogenics with Controlled Chaos
5. Honey Buzz
6. Terraforming Mars
7. Dungeons and Dragons
8. Spirit Island
9. Robinson Crusoe
10. Takenoko with Chibis
I also love games like Yahtzee Poker Deluxe, Advance to Boardwalk, Azul Sintra, Flamecraft, and Mystery Mansion. (My collection is 137 games big)
My two biggest disappointments are:
1. Agricola
2. Santa Monica
@@Emsworth377 - I really wanted to like Agricola. I thought that I would love it. I don't hate it (I only hate SORRY!). It was just so anti-climatic. Our group tried several of the options suggested in the rule book and community. Nothing worked.
Civilization (1980) from Avalon Hill would be my #1 easily. I've been playing it for over 2 decades now. What a great game. I never get tired of it.
What about Magic Realm?? Have you ever heard of it?!!
