for me QC is the easiest modeler to dial in tone. I can get the same tones with fm3 and helix but with way more tweaking (pre/post eq). I currently have fm3 and QC. When using QC i find myself playing more instead of tweaking endless parameter options.
I agree, I've been playing guitar since 1987 and always hated tweeking the fucking amp to get a tone, I would let my friends do that cause I just wanted to rock. With the QC I can make a preset I'm happy with in less than 3 minutes. I made a killer bogner preset the other day in no time that I will probably use for everything I do now.
You are the only guy on youtube I trust on your impressions on a unit like the helix or QC. I love how you figure out the little nuances in amps , how amps respond to pickups, how IR's affect the tone and stuff like that. Greetings from Belgium, and keep up the awesome work !
I've had my QC since September 2021. It has completely changed the way I do everything on guitar, including recording, practice, and live performance. I was really nervous when I sold my Fryette Pittbull 100CL to pay for my QC, but over the course of a couple of days with the QC I knew I had made the right decision. I realized that I could be happy with a modeler that got me 98% there tone-wise, but with 5,000 times the flexibility and ease of use over lugging around my old 100-watt head. Many of us don't have the $$$ to own dozens of tube amps, so digital modeling technology like this is a godsend. And that technology is only going to get better from here forward. Excellent demo, BTW. Cheers!
Couldn’t agree more with everything you’ve said here! I’ve owned them all and imo the QC wins in a landslide in the UX and realism departments. The feel is better and its more fun to use overall. I’ve had mine in the studio for 3 wks now and can’t get enough.
I feel like the capture is nearly identical, maybe slight difference in the bass response, but the characteristic of the sound is very close. The models feel much different, like much more fizzy and like there's a blanket between speaker and microphone.
Something about the grinding in the mid-range of the dual rec is just so good. Definitely better than the capture. The capture is still awesome, though!
Agreed, the IR quality function for ALL IRs (internal and loaded) should be a higher resolution. I found using an impulse loader for IRs within my DAW is sonically far superior. The only other complaint I have mentioned on other review Vids is the capture results are a little lower gain and noticeable to me. Otherwise no real complaints beyond how I use the QC (both studio and hybrid live applications).
After the flood in my studio that destroyed my axe FX ax8 and FM3. I was looking do get one of these. Both fractal and QC are so back ordered. Found a helix locally. Seems to be working ok for me. Maybe when they stop shipping all of the QCs and FM9s to TH-camrs I might be able to get one.
It’s perfectly fine. People are nit picking under a microscope. Millions and millions of music listeners can’t tell the difference nor do they give a shit. A great song can outshine an “ok” mix. Musicians chasing perfection in sound, but neglect the most important thing.. the actual music
welcome to the QC community, we're still in the growth/teething phase but it's definitely progressing. Cool video, nice work- looking forward to your content and feel free to share presets or captures on the cloud, everyone's still kind of learning how to make the most of the unit.
George Lever also raised the concern about the IR length. Personally I dont understand the difference but i did notice that the HX stomp could do 500ms or 1000ms even which was handy cause the GGD studio cabs exports IR's at 500 and 1000ms and i like adding these the HX stomp. But to me the cabs in QC still sound good and very usable live and in the DAW i mostly load a IR, but would be cool if QC supported 500ms but i think they are using 20 or 50ms 🤨.
To me it was pretty tough to tell the difference between the real and the captured. Perhaps “slightly” different? But, not enough to go buy the individual amps vs a QC. :) Can’t wait to see what you compare next! Would love to see some JP2-C or PRS MT-15 if you have those. As well as some comparisons with the Axe FX. Keep up the great work! 👍🏻 🎸
I sold my axe fx and kept the qc. The axe obviously had way more but I think the new features that will be coming will be the nail. They are going to implement the plugins into the QC which will be sick!
it's worth bearing in mind that with Rectifier's, they are EXTREMELY sensitive to the load that is connected (especially on the Red channel in modern mode). It's likely that the load Neural DSP used in their model isn't the same as what you're using (I have a feeling the load they used here is what is letting it down a bit). Cool comparison, would love to hear one where the amp is using a Rectifier cabinet as a load as that should really be the benchmark for the modellers to aim for IMO.
I could be wrong but I don’t think there’s a load in the quad cortex? I thought he’s using the same load (two notes?) which goes to both his interface and IR and to the QC… so the load is equal…
I own the QC since September 2021 and I never regretted selling my Helix Floor for it, despite all its short comings(see below) The QC gives me the same routing options as the Helix, has just as much processing power and sounds just as good if not slightly better (imho) but in a much smaller and lighter form factor, which was my main reason for switching., as I am commuting 1 1/2 hrs one way to my bands practice space via public transport. Much more convenient that way. Even now that I build a proper board setup for the QC (PT Metro 16, CIOKS DC7, Hotone SoulPress II, QC) it still is 2kg lighter than the Helix and more compact. There are a lot of short comings/missing features on the QC: - The PC editor was announced to be available shortly after release - still not available almost 1 1/2 years after release... - The current pitch shifter is quite shit, there is a lot of artifacting/glitching going on. - Preset and IR management on device is horrible - updates, cloud presets, cloud captures and IRs only via WiFi I expected it to not be perfect straight away, its a young company who just released their first physical device. Even the Helix wasn't anywhere near as good as it is today when it got first released, so I have hope that NDSP can make the QC a great product through and through.
Yessssss Jon your chord voicings are always dope! I'm a real Recto enthusiast and that capture was awfully close, as in you would easily find 2 Recto's that sound different by that margin. I have an old Rect-O-Verb 50 and that Trem-O-Verb model is very similar in it's sem-fuzz eccentricities. Those amps are a lot more boomy and compressed, with a kind of nasal upper mid thing. And they pretty much don't do tight without some serious boosting and tweaking :P
Great video and riffs & beats! Alone, rectifier wins. With backing tracks, rectifier still feels “bigger” but it’s not as noticeable to the average ear. Especially in a live situation. For that full bodied goodness when recording and less high end fizz, real thing all day. 👍
Ditto, 100%. I'd just describe the amp's qualities as, not just 'bigger' ...but much more '3D', or 'holographic', as a further delineation/distinction. I think you and I essentially hear the same differences. And I'll add & echo a comment I've made since the inception of modelers/samplers, & that is: While this tech's improvements have massively progressed, "It's still not 'there'".
As an audio nerd - yes I can hear the difference..... But as a consumer- I think it is negligible. I prefer the real amp sound, as each amp its own characteristic, however, for the common folk- it will be negligible. Just make awesome music - riff hard, riff heavy, and carry on....
thanks man 🙏 same experience here, just too expensive for beeing not complete right now, just wait for some upgrades maybe..mesa stuff is so much overprized here in europe so good mesa plugins or modeling is highly needed here, but i have not found something that can emulate or profile my mesa roadster any good. it sounds good on record but just lacks live performance imo. 🎸
Love to see what you can get out of it after 2 - 3 months of using it. Great video thank you for the checkout! I like the recto sound of the QC but still you hear differences with the original dual rectifier. It sounds a bit like the Paul Landers Rammstein pedal.
Great comparison and review. I especially like how you showed the screens from the Quad Cortex when making the comparisons. I've had two Kempers and sold them both because I could never get them to sound quite right either. The top end suffered the most, it just sounded wrong to me. I think the QC does a far better job of reproducing the Dual Rec for sure. Thanks for your hard work on these videos, I always enjoy watching any of them.
Hey Jon! Here's my personal experience: I had it for a couple of months, because I need a modeler with two amp blocks because my input is stereo as I exit from the tc electonic mimiq so I had the chance to grab one to see if it would fit my personal needs. I liked the overall sound but not to be the chosen one because there's no editor, no news at all from NDSP, no support, lack of routing possibilities, too delicate at the touch. it feels like a Nintendo Wii at the touch more than a work tool. Sold it, took off the axe 3 from the studio desk and placed it in a rack, then I bought another axe for the studio. Problem solved! Axe is still the king, best community, best support from Fractal, best editor in the market, best reliability and best building quality
Great video! I have a Quad and was happy to see you had gotten one. I enjoyed this video and hope you do tons more. It would be great if you posted some of your captures on the Cortex app, they seem to have a great community that is being built! Being able to check out some of your captures would be fantastic! Thanks for the videos, huge fan of the channel 🤘🏼
Awesome to find out you have a Cortex- look forward to seeing more of what you do with it, have just followed you on Cortex app as would love to try some captures if you do upload any! I’m always blown away by the tones you get out of amps 😎
I'm so thankful to hear someone else talking about the inaccuracies with the Kemper. Look, I know it works great for a lot of people but I always thought its high gain captures in particular were unconvincing to say the least. Rectifiers and ENGLs never ever sound right in Kemper profiles if you've spent any time with the actual amp.
I’ve played the Kemper for a lot of years and splenic for the QC. Never regret it! Yeah it’s true the QC still needs some feature updates but let’s be honest: the Kemper is there for 10years now. And just watch the release lineup of the QC it kills! Just imagine the QC features in a few Years. 😍 Neural did already bring some nice features and they work a lot on feature requests. I think the captures are better then kemper profiles. They got something in it that feels natural.
@@SonicDriveStudio cos its not a kemper product I guess? Im really lookign forward to what the guys at kemper do for the replacement model for the kemper ahha
Not to diss other youtubers but your take on the Quad Cortex as an amp guy (like Ola Englund and Rhet Shull) was the video I was waiting for! Thanks for sharing man! 💥 RAMM-STEIN 💥
Just returned to this vid 4 months later and save for one other comparison video there hasn't been much other Quad Cortex stuff from you, just wondered why? Not digging it, or maybe just busy with your other content? Just interested as I'm still on the fence about getting a QC, many of the features and workflow etc look really appealing so would be great to get your opinions after some time with it as you have a lot of experience with not just other modellers but a ton of amps as well plus a great ear for tones and production! For example one thing I would love to see is comparing a QC amp capture through a power amp and cab, and then the real amp through that same cab. Can't find that many videos on using it that way and your comparison videos are among my favourites so keeping my fingers crossed haha! Anyway keep on truckin' dude! 🤘
@@SonicDriveStudio Oh yeah, it such a great tool, but you know I have a ton of Synergy stuff, I will probably keep at that. I do like the effects on the floor element, I use my POD 500 rack for FX currently!
Bro, been watching you for ages. I own a 6505 mh partly because of your videos. I'm interested in a quad cortex, I would love to see you upload profiles of your collection, especially using your different pick up configurations from your guitar collection. It would riiiiiiiiiip.
@@SonicDriveStudio thank you. will follow you. I also do own a qc and its interesting how some captures are better than others. I did a lot of experiments and it's an endless fight for sure. I still do not have a clear rule for gain settings during capture process and for presets. It may take time to get close results using 2 completely different chains (real amp + reactive load and qc).
It is so close that live I don't think it'd make much difference (so many other factors in sound). I think if you need a lot of sounds and can capture those and blend them for a live rig than the Quad Cortex makes sense, its expensive though.
Very cool comparison. The QC sound great even thought I’m happy with the Axe Fx 3. Btw talking about Rammstein that rectifier tone sounds so RZK like 🔥🤘 What kind of post processing do you apply to the guitars if you don’t mind me asking ? What are the levels of high and low cut applied ? Thanks in advance
@@SonicDriveStudio I see. Thanks so much. That explains why my guitar recordings can sound so lifeless and when I try to compensate adding more top end with the amp it turns into a fizz mess 😅 (I use YA IR’s specifically his mixes and I think they sound so good without any filters)
It is close on the capture, but to my ear it doesn’t cut through the mix as good. Playing guitar only would be great I’m sure, but it seems to be missing some of the dynamic richness in a mix setting. How did it feel to play ?
I honestly didn't like what I heart, the real one sounds way better than QC. Now it would be cool to hear a comparison between Dual Rectifiers in QC, Helix and AXE FX...
Awesome capture sound ! What's your signal chain and guitar pickups ? I can't even replicate the sound on the stock amp, mine sound muddy and has not the grind that I love... This grind is what made me love the Rectifier !
Captures were pretty accurate, but I can hear some differences. Stock amp model in QC is something different. Maybe it's a different REV version of Dual Rectifire.
So QC is not as good at capturing speaker cabinet IR’s as Helix or Axe-Fx, due to lower resolution? But is better than Kemper at capturing the whole amp signal chain? That seems very odd to me. One the most important aspects of tone is from the speaker cabinet. 🧐
There seems to be a certain "graininess" even in the capture that doesn't exist with the real deal. In the mix the modeling works but the real amp sounds fuller. I think small things like that can make a surprisingly big impact on the listening experience. Still, the quad cortex is a really cool piece of kit.
Another great video! Thanks man! I would like to ask a question please, in your opinion, for those who intend to use the factory amp's simulations, the york audio ir's bring a more interesting result than the factory cab's simulations? And when we use a capture, it acts in place of the amplifier, but keeping the cab simulation? All the best
The differences are significant, like 9/10. The real amp sounds open and lower (more sub?), treble is smoother (less presence?), dynamic is awesome. The QC sounds a bit compressed and is not as wide as the real amp, its treble is brighter in term of more presence, and the bass is tighter and more firm. To be honest, i'm not convinced by the QC.
Aaah you went to Rammstein too, I went monday also in Nijmegen, awesome show as usual, I just saw a lot of people that didn’t really understand how concerts work. But then again, Rammstein has become more about the show to most, even tho it’s musically still one of my favorite bands. Anyway, great video as usual. I’m a Helix user but I’m always interested in seeing/ trying other stuff.
I own both the Kemper and the QC and i always com back to the Kemper! No one sounds better the the other but the biggest thing i miss is the Editor on the QC....still not out!
@@SonicDriveStudio Thats true but Kemper never promised to release the Editor after launching the unit bur Neural did 😁 I mean you can do it all on the screen to be fair! What the QC needs so badly is the File managment that sucks so hard right now!
2 years of a pandemic shutdown, part shortages and limited labour. Not the same to compare to the kemper launch is it? Quit being a bitch before these geniuses quit from all the hate and under appreciation leaving us with no updates
Cool vid man, thanks! I notice you dial you presence quite low, is that for this vid/tone or you usually set your recto presence around there? ..I’ve never played a Recto but trying to use a modelled one & until now I’ve noticed a lot of people crank mids & presence; & highs a bit & drop the lows as you’ve done but I’m thinking maybe that’s where I’m going wrong & should try dropping the presence as you’ve done. Thanks
Riffs sounded great and the tones are all good IMO, but the real amp was king i think, which im glad about cause i don't want modelers to make amps totally redundant. Is your cortex cloud profile GuitarJonSDS ? would be cool to check out your captures and presets. I dont think the coretx cloud is set up well to sell captures like with kemper packs, but given the potential amount of captures you could produce with you wild amp collection, it could be a good idea to see if you can set up a pack type deal... Would be more happy to support
Awesome video! Looking forward for other captures test! I'm curious how it would sound with the Rockerverb 🙂 btw, the intern amps doesn't sound that good, but the capture is way better and quite close.. Although it seems to lack a bit of highs and definition. Thanks for making this test, this was exactly what I was waiting to see and if someone would do it, a comparison from a capture from the head sound with a load box and how it works using the same IRs. Cheers

Neural did already bring some nice features and they work a lot on feature requests.
I think the captures are better then kemper profiles. They got something in it that feels natural.
imagine a kemper 2
Why not view the QC is the "Kemper 2"?
@@SonicDriveStudio cos its not a kemper product I guess? Im really lookign forward to what the guys at kemper do for the replacement model for the kemper ahha
@@0megalul309 Imagine a QC2... It's endless... But, currently, Kemper is outdated.
Please capture your best orange amps dude! You re amazing
Would definitely love a Plexi style comparison for more heavy playing.
Love the video! Have you made that capture available in the Cortex cloud? Would love to use it!
I really enjoyed this video! Thank you for your honest review of the QC. It sounds great!
Great Video! Are you on th Neural Cloud and share that captures?
Not to diss other youtubers but your take on the Quad Cortex as an amp guy (like Ola Englund and Rhet Shull) was the video I was waiting for!
Thanks for sharing man!
💥 RAMM-STEIN 💥
Cheers!
I agree
The QC didnt really come close enough for me, it didnt have the qrowl and grunt, it was like a bad photocopy but audiocopy
It's all good! We all have our own personal preferences! I still love my real amps but for me this is just a very fun creative tool!
Great video, could you maybe make your captures public so we can check em out? 😊
Reamping capture sound the same! 😮 needed immediately a Quad Cortex to my collection! nice video BTW!!!
Cool context as usually. Will you share your captures in the future?
Not sure... Maybe a couple
@@SonicDriveStudio thank you. will follow you. I also do own a qc and its interesting how some captures are better than others. I did a lot of experiments and it's an endless fight for sure. I still do not have a clear rule for gain settings during capture process and for presets. It may take time to get close results using 2 completely different chains (real amp + reactive load and qc).
when you recorded those samples, did you apply any post eq or is it fully raw sound?
Any chance you will release any of your amp captures?
It is so close that live I don't think it'd make much difference (so many other factors in sound). I think if you need a lot of sounds and can capture those and blend them for a live rig than the Quad Cortex makes sense, its expensive though.
Very cool comparison. The QC sound great even thought I’m happy with the Axe Fx 3. Btw talking about Rammstein that rectifier tone sounds so RZK like 🔥🤘
What kind of post processing do you apply to the guitars if you don’t mind me asking ? What are the levels of high and low cut applied ? Thanks in advance
No post processing aside from a low cut at 80hz ish
@@SonicDriveStudio I see. Thanks so much. That explains why my guitar recordings can sound so lifeless and when I try to compensate adding more top end with the amp it turns into a fizz mess 😅 (I use YA IR’s specifically his mixes and I think they sound so good without any filters)
It is close on the capture, but to my ear it doesn’t cut through the mix as good.
Playing guitar only would be great I’m sure, but it seems to be missing some of the dynamic richness in a mix setting.
How did it feel to play ?
Good observation! The captures feel nice to play
Thanks for the really transparent review/demo.
Can you do your mark v next?
I honestly didn't like what I heart, the real one sounds way better than QC. Now it would be cool to hear a comparison between Dual Rectifiers in QC, Helix and AXE FX...
This capture sounds great! Can you share it on the cortex cloud please?
The capture is really good. Nice video.
Could you do a video on capturing amps using the captor x.
Hi, great review mate. Still own it after 3 months?
Id love to see a Diezel VH4 capture on the QC, get some tasty adam jones tones 🤤
Really, really nice :)
But I never saw you review Mooer products. I would like to see Mooer GE 250 or GE300 captured amps from you :)
The QC sure smoothed out that raspy MB-R. 👍
man, please make amp sim comparison between.
neural dsp quad cortex, line 6 helix, and axe fx III.
thanks!
It took long enough with the Kemper though. Let's not forget that :)
My HX Stomp kills my QC
Tha capture it's insane!!!! O.o almost the same tone!!!..... The QC it's incredible unit
I might have missed it but I am assuming all clips use the same IR?
Capture is missing something in the tone but it's still awesome
Oh yes please!! Capture show!!
Please capture Orange Rockerverb mkIII!!!
Thanks
I think this is where I usually set it. I like to boost my treble a bit so I guess this is to compensate for that a bit
@@SonicDriveStudio makes sense, thanks for answering 🙏🏼
Riffs sounded great and the tones are all good IMO, but the real amp was king i think, which im glad about cause i don't want modelers to make amps totally redundant. Is your cortex cloud profile GuitarJonSDS ? would be cool to check out your captures and presets. I dont think the coretx cloud is set up well to sell captures like with kemper packs, but given the potential amount of captures you could produce with you wild amp collection, it could be a good idea to see if you can set up a pack type deal... Would be more happy to support
That's me! Not sure yet what to do but no rush :)
Have you shared that capture?
I have a QC and that thing is a God-Send!
Cheers
