Van Halen self titled from 1978. Classic hard-rock/heavy metal album, very influential. Loads of great songs, terrific harmonies too, and obviously EVH's incredible guitar playing.
my pick for today as well!
Great pick Mike.
#19. Black Sabbath self-titled debut. I got into Sabbath a little after the fact- two decades after my high school friend, who was an avowed Sabbath fan, kept trying to get me into Vol. 4, it finally clicked in me and I realized how intensely good the music of this band could be. After getting into Vol. 4, I went back and discovered Black Sabbath's debut, which I believe is one of their finest albums- yes, it has hints of metal to come, but more importantly (at least to me), there is a richness and diversity of musical influences which makes this album totally unique in their catalog.
@@stuarthecht8196 hi Stuart. Interesting article but unfortunately I’m not a fan of this band.
19. Bad Co.'s self titled debut. It was some time in high school when I first heard this amazing album in its entirety in the early '80s. I listened to it just a few weeks ago and it's still soooooo strong. My favorite Bad Co. album. Thanks, Pete.

Today's pick in no particular order is Queen-Queen. My favorite Queen album just edging out Sheer Heart Attack, is a unique and exemplary debut record. An exciting album boasting great songs like "Great King Rat", "Keep Yourself Alive", "Liar", "My Fairy King", the scorching "Modern Times Rock 'N' Roll" and "Son And Daughter". The greatness of their debut is no surprise as we look back on Queen's astounding output over the years including several gems.
The beginnings of one of the greatest bands ever Yoke, fantastic choice of course!

Hi Pete & everyone. Excellent pick of yours - so many classic tracks. Mine today is another 1977 legendary debut album. It's BAT OUT OF HELL by MEATLOAF. The video of the title track on British TV's Old Grey Whistle Test made a huge impact, unusual for an unknown blues-rocker at the height of punk. It's still my favourite Meatloaf track, accompanied by Todd Rundgren and other members of Utopia. Todd also produced the album, and the other highlight for me is the multi-part Paradise by the Dashboard Light, with some dramatic call and response singing between Meatloaf and Ellen Foley.
Great choice! The Bat Out of Hell album is phenomenal indeed!
Love those two songs and my mom love two out of three so what are you going to say? The family is rocking!
Hey Dave. Excellent pick. I read somewhere that he made an album as part of a duo before this album, but Bat Out Of Hell is his true debut.

Helloween - Walls Of Jericho (1985) These teutonic giants are like 80s Iron Maiden on steroids! The band that helped pioneering power metal kick things off for real on this fantastic debut album from nearly forty years ago. ‘Ride the Sky’ ‘Reptile’ (the bass!) 'Phantoms of Death' and the closer ‘How Many Tears’ are essential listening. Even at 53 one can’t help but feel forever 17 when head banging to this music 😎

Pick #19: KISS self-titled release. Coming out in early '74, this must've been a Rock & Roll revelation! Hard rock/Kabuki style, with pop lyrical leanings(by 70's & 80's standards)+ having seen Kiss-proper;in the eighties & subsequent reunion in 96-97.... this might be the band's crowning achievement! Starting off with Strutter, concert staples like Firehouse & Duece, scorchers such as Cold Gin & 100,000 Years & maybe my favorite closing track of all-time: Black Diamond... just great! Though Creatures of the Night & Hotter Than Hell may be my favorites from them.... the debut, started it all.... a lot of good/very,little bad. Can't be denied🔥. If like me- you're a child of the seventies, teen of the eighties, and young adult of the nineties.... ICONIC.

Pick #19 - Metal Church (self-titled debut). This album doesn't have much flow to it, but all of the original tracks still seem to work. 13) Ted Nugent - Ted Nugent (1975)
Ted Nugent's 1975 self-titled debut is a classic slice of '70s Hard Rock. Nugent once said that if you want to know what Rock 'N' Roll is all about you just have listen to this album. It may not be the best album of all time as Nugent suggested, but indeed it is a great album with many great songs. In fact it's the best in Nugent's discography and it has an iconic guitar sound.
The best tracks on the album are the closer "Queen Of The Forest", "Where Have You Been All My Life", the anthem-like "Motor City Madhouse", the hard rocking "Stormtroopin'" and "Snakeskin Cowboys". The opening riff-based "Stranglehold" is one of the best Hard Rock tracks of all time featuring one of the greatest guitar and one of the greatest vocal performances. It's eight-and-a-half minutes of pure '70s Hard Rock that just explodes when it comes on.
No matter how you may feel about him personally, Ted Nugent is one hell of a musician.

My choice today is a debut that actually in my opinion is definitive of a whole sub genre of music, this being so called southern rock. The album in question being PRONOUNCED LEHNERD SKINNERD. You all know who the band is. I know the Allman Brothers pre date Skynyrd and had released several albums before this one, but for me, this one really defines what Southern rock is mixing country, bluegrass blues and hard rock into a potent mixture. It contains what most of us would consider is Skynyrd's signature song Free Bird, which showed their ability to stretch out and jam, but most of the songs here are more concise and tightly arranged. Hard rockers like I Ain't The One and Gimme 3 Steps mix with soulful bluesy ballads like Tuesdays Gone and Simple Man, Skynyrd showing they and southern rock are more than a one trick pony and maximising the impact of that 3 guitar line up. Ronnie (RIP) whilst not being the greatest vocal gymnast or technician had such a way of conveying his lyrics and made them so believable. A masterpiece of a debut..... As is Pete's choice today and coming up for me soon.
20 On Through the Night Def Leppard
21 S/T. Wishbone Ash
22 Twice Removed From Yesterday Robin Trower.
23 S/T. Iron Maiden
24 Out Of The Cellar. Ratt
25 S/T. Point Blank
26 Can't Buy A Thrill Steely Dan
27 First Album. ZZ Top
28 Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. Rainbow
29 S/T. REO Speedwagon
30 Appetite For Destruction. Guns N Roses
31 Lightning To The Nations. Diamond Head
My HM today is the self titled debut album from Canadian hard rockers Moxy. A potent slice of riff fueled hard rock verging on proto metal with guitar solos from the late, great Tommy Bolin. Whilst I think they peaked with 3rd album Ridin' High, this is an enjoyable debut with a real energy and crunch. Good production makes this worth hearing for any fan of 70s North Atlantic proto metal and hard rock.
Excellent pick and write-up Jerry. Obviously this is on my list.
That VOICE is Southern Soul!
Awesome pick Jerry! Skynyrd is coming later on my list. Absolutely agree with you, this is the first real southern rock album. The amazing ABB was much more into blues and jamming.

#19 First Issue - Public Image Limited. John Lydon drops Rotten, and essentially punk rock, takes rock into a completely new direction. Unlike anything else released at the time, it was amazingly influential on much that was to come.

Exile In Guyville -Liz Phair A number of astonishing album of the early-mid 90's, and to me this certainly ranks among them. Foreigner's Cold as Ice and especially Long, Long Way From Home cool stuff. Good album for sure but Exile in Guyville much more of a compelling listen 30 years ago and ever since for me.
That's a brilliant album. Awesome pick.
Excellent choice and on my list
Day 13:
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden (1980)
Metal has gone so many directions since this album and it still holds up. I think that says something. It still often highly ranked in their catalog by many as well. Up the Irons!
Day 12: Steve Morse - High Tension Wires (1989)
Day 11: Kiss - Kiss (1974)
Day 10: The Darkness - Permission to Land (2003)
Day 9: Dire Straits - Dire Straits (1978)
Day 8: Journey - Journey (1975)
Day 7: Warhorse - Warhorse (1970)
Day 6: Curtis Mayfield - Curtis (1970)
Day 5: Judas Priest - Rocka Rolla (1974)
Day 4: Colosseum II - Strange New Flesh (1976)
Day 3: Nestor - Kids in a Ghost Town (2021)
Day 2: Billy Joel - Cold Spring Harbor (1971)
Day 1: Joe Satriani - Not of This Earth (1986)
Omg I loved this when it came out. I still have it on cassette! Used to drive around in my ‘71 metallic brown Mustang fastback, cranking it on my Blaupunkt stereo with Jensen coaxials. What a time, what a time! Perfect album!! Thanks Pete. Have a great vacay!
Was fortunate to see Foreiger on Aug. 18th 1977 at the Circle Theater in Indy. AC/DC performed first, [ Bon Scott] & Co. were excellent. This was both Bands 1st US Tour. My only regret was that AC/DC should've played last. Foreigner was also excellent, it's just after AC/DC performed, Quite a bit of energy was exhausted with Angus Bon Cliff & Malcolm peeling the paint off the walls of the Circle Theater.
Pick #19 for me is from a band who are currently enjoying quite a resurgence in popularity: Solstice - Silent Dance, released on Equinox records in 1984. Only Andy Glass remains from the original line up but the new band which includes the extraordinary Ebony Buckle are as energetic as ever. Standout tracks are Eatthsong and Cheyenne which are the still in the set list today.
No.19….ZZ Top self titled first album(1971). Great bluesy debut by the trio. Billy Gibbon’s guitar tone and riffs are killer on this album. Goin down to Mexico, the short but sweet Neighbor Neighbor, and my favorite Brown Sugar, are some of the songs on this album. Great album and great band.
Day 13 (#19): Talking Heads - Talking Heads:77
Today's pick is Spine Of God by Monster Magnet from 1991.
Heavy psych space metal that helped give birth to the stoner rock genre. The fuzzed up guitars saw critics compare this to Mudhoney and Tad. They were always more of a late 60's/early 70's influenced band. It included a cover of Grand Funk Railroad's Sin's A Good Man's Brother. The production and Dave Wyndorf's trippy lyrics added to that. Song's like the title track and Zodiac Lung were mainstays of their live set for many years.
It's a Satanic drug thing... you wouldn't understand.
Day 13. Climbing by Mountain
Great pick Mike.

Nebula ... Let It Burn
Stoner rock that has psych in it as well. It was founded by two guys who left Fu Manchu in 1997, releasing this gem in 1998.
Listened to this repeatedly about all day yesterday. Cool as hell.
Starred listening to Nebula back st the turn of our century with the other bands of the rock revival. I was becoming middle-aged and needed new music. I still need new music.

Hi everyone! Day 13 and straight on to my 3 picks for today, and I made a last minute change, elevating my AOR pick to my main list and dropping the "G" album I had on there before as I realised that although my original choice sold squillions and was a bit of a game changer at the time, I realised I don't really listen to it much and, in fact, a lot if it's most famous songs are overplayed, although I still like a few of the deeper cuts. I'm sure you can guess what it was? No? Come on, It's So Easy!! Anyway...
MAIN PICK: GIANT "Last Of The Runaways"
HM: KISS S/T
AOR: HAREM SCAREM S/T
With Dann Huff on lead guitar and vocals, his brother David on drums, Mike Brignardello on bass and Alan Pasqua on keyboards, this 1989 album from GIANT should have seen them headlining arenas, but they were just a couple of years too late. This is huge, guitar driven AOR, featuring songs like I'm A Believer, I Can't Get Close Enough, Shake Me Up, Stranger To Me and the top 20 single I'll See You In My Dreams. 2nd album Time To Burn was great as well, but despite a smattering of albums over time with several personnel changes, this was as good as it got, which is to say very, very good indeed...
I won't say much about KISS' debut as lots has been said already, but it still stands up for what it is, a great, fun statement by the Hottest Band In The World...
As for Canada's HAREM SCAREM, I've sung the praises of their sophomore album Mood Swings in the past - still their best imho - but their debut was a great way to start, if less heavy than its successor. Songs like Hard To Love, Distant Memory, Slowly Slipping Away and the ballad Honestly all highlighting lead singer Harry Hess' impassioned vocal style, Pete Lesperance's guitars just as to the fore as guest keyboard player Ray Coburn (of Honeymoon Suite) This was the first of 15 studio albums to date...
Hey Iain. I've heard Giant. Good band. There's no denying that KISS's debut is legit. I'm not all that familiar with Harum-Scarum, so I'll have to check them out. An interesting set of picks as usual. Cheers! 🍺
Top of the morning/ afternoon to you Sir Iain. That 30 million selling album is great! A Giant!
and kissing time is anytime! And now that Halloween is nigh, harem scarem seems apropos. Which beach did you see the seals at?
Hi Iain, Giant and Kiss will appear on my list, in different order. But I do agree with you, that Giant debut is phenomenal!
Harem Scarem is a pending subject for me
@@iainhead9898 3 more inspired choices Iain. The Giant album has such a huge sound. Dann Huff is another like Dave Meniketti, who is a great guitar player and who also has great vocal chops. I did consider the Kiss debut, but I just can't get past the poor production on this one and with sonically so superior versions of virtually all the songs on Alive, I pushed the debut out. Harem Scarem's first two albums are their best in my view. Another album out of time to be a big success.
Geddy Lee . My Favourite Headache.
Really enjoyed the album . Title track is a bit off-putting, but “Grace to Grace” brings the album to a great finish.
They included two other songs on his audiobook, too.
My pick today will be Jon Anderson ‘Olias of Sunhillow’. Jon Andersons first solo album is just as good as any of the Yes albums from that era.

19. Boston - S/T.
Day 13: The Beatles Please Please Me; Even though it's not on the same level as what they would create later in the decade, I still stand that this is great start. The songs are still catchy and has some stand out tracks like the title track, Misery, Anna, Love Me Do, and their version of Twist And Shout.

#19: The Doors Self Titled Debut
19. Dio - Holy Diver
Dust, S/T from 1971.
#19 Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine (1992)
A true musical bomb that exploded in the early 90s. A solid and talented rhythmic base (Tim Commerford-Brad Wilk). A singer who rhymes and spits his lyrics like revolutionary slogans and the one and only: Tom Morello. His way of playing the guitar is a mix of DJ and guitar hero, gave a new and innovative sound to what, in my opinion, is the best Rap Metal album in history.

Star rider was my fav song on the album because it was the most proggy.
19. Balance - Balance (1981)
Favorite tracks: Looking For The Magic, Fly Through The Night, Hot Summer Nights.
Good morning (afternoon, evening or night), Pete. Outstanding SoT selection. Personal pick today? Headed a bit outside the usual SoT ballpark to for the eponymous debut album released in April 1982 on the Warner Bros. label by this American musician, singer, songwriter, and guitarist - Marshall Crenshaw. Crenshaw began writing songs for this debut while appearing in the stage performances of Beatlemania in Manhattan, New York. The debut easily displayed his roots of Buddy Holly and soul music. Early in his career, he was often compared to Buddy Holly. Though it hit #50 in the US charts and generated a couple of hit songs though neither cracked the US Top 40, the album didn't get the traction that was expected and likely deserved. The follow-up album was a commercial disappointment. Played this all the time back in its day since was travelling quite a bit at in my professional and this made for great road music on the cassette deck as well. It been reissued and expanded on the Rhino label. Personal favorite tracks include the opener There She Goes Again and its follow-up track Someday, Someway, as well as The Usual Thing, Cynical Girl and Mary Anne, Mary Anne. An outstanding power pop album tinged with a bit of new wave from the time but highly recommended to those investigating or enjoying such music. Thanks, Pete. Have a great vacation and looking forward to the coming episodes you've already posted.

DAY 12: Dream Theater - When Dream and Day Unite
My pick for Day 13 (#19 in my countdown)
Damn Yankees - Damn Yankees (1990)
My pick #19 is Björk : Debut (1993 ). She´s a highly unique artist and this debut album has very innovative production. It´s overall a weirdly catchy album. Human Behaviour is the clearest standout track to me. The Foreigner debut album didn´t cross my mind when I made my list, but it´s actually a great album and it could´ve made my list.
My # 19 pick in no particular order is from this Canadian hard rock band Prism with their self-titled 1977 debut . Featuring Ron Tabak RIP lead vocals,Lindsay Mitchell lead guitar, ,Jim Vallance drums and songwriter extraordinare,John Hall keyboards, and his only Prism album appearance Tom Lavin guitar before he would go on to found the Powder Blues Band. Abe Bryant bass. Produced by Bruce Fairbairn and Jim Vallance (aka Rodney Higgs) Great fun album.

My pick for today is Roxy Music - Self Titled (1972)
A quirky, varied, fascinating and experimental album that was way ahead of its time. It marks the start of an impressive career. It kicks of with ´Re-Make/Re-Model, exciting piano runs, whining guitars, ripping saxophone, driving bass and Ferry´s unique singing style. Amazing track. Other delicious tracks are ´Ladytron´ ´If There Is Something´ ´Chance Meeting´ and ´Sea Breezes´.

19. The Birthday Party - The Birthday Party (Missing Link, 1980)
he mighty Birthday Party is hardly an unknown quantity, thanks to the long, successful career Nick Cave has enjoyed with his various projects. Basically the same band as Boys Next Door, who released a so-so album, Door, Door in 1979, their transformation into The Birthday Party suggests some sort of dealings with the devil at the crossroads, as the band glows like brimstone, smoke curling up from their boots as they perform a seething, groundbreaking hybrid of post-punk blues noir. The band widely was quoted as having worshipped The Pop Group, but honestly they were already better than the chaotic mess of that band. The result is a more sinister mix of The Cramps and The Gun Club., with a touch of art-damaged post-Beefheart skronk that went well with Pere Ubu at the time. For some reason their debut is much less celebrated than Prayers On Fire (1981), Junkyard (1982) and the EPs. But this contains some of my all-time favorite tunes that Nick Cave ever wrote, including “Happy Birthday,” “Guilt Parade” and “A Catholic Sin.” Bonus single “Release The Bats” became a go-to for the goth subculture.
20. Echo & the Bunnymen - Crocodiles (Sire, 1980)
While the Bunnymen's liquidy, gradiose fourth albu, Ocean Rain (1984) is considered the band's peak by some, a significant group of fans rate their debut Crocodiles and Heaven Up Here (1981) as superior. I quickly came around to that line of thinking myself, as they achieved a balance of energy, melody and menace that few could match.
21. Killing Joke - Killing Joke (EG, 1980)
Among a slew of post-punk debuts in 1980, Killing Joke established a unique, influential template based on heavy keyboards and industrial textures, apocalyptic dub, and Jaz Coleman's murderous war cries for vocals. 1980 seemed like just the beginning for even greater things. Joke's on us.
22. Magazine - Real Life (Virgin, 1978)
When Howard Devoto split from the Buzzcocks after their groundbreaking self-released EP, it was like a cell splitting off to form just as an amazing an organism, but expanding on Buzzcocks’ arty punk into real art punk, even informed by some prog sensibilities. Add brilliant guitarist John McGeoch, and the Magazine debut, coming out just three months after Buzzcocks’ first full-length, is actually artistically a step ahead of Devoto’s former bandmates. Case in point, while “Shot at Both Sides” shares the same riff as “Lipstick,” which Devoto co-wrote with Pete Shelley, Magazine’s song is superior. They may not have matched the run of singles collected on Singles Going Steady, but Real Life is a massively pioneering post-punk classic.
#19 Is From Polish Gothic Metal Band UnSun The End Of Life Favorite Songs Are Whispers, Lost Innocence, Blinded By Hatred, Face The Truth, The Other Side, Destiny, Memories, Bring Me To Heaven & Closer To Death
My #13: Dire Straits - Self-Titled
#19: Molly Hatchet.
S/T debut released in 1978, with lead vocals from Danny Joe Brown, who passed away in 2005 (RIP, Danny Joe Brown). Some of the tracks included: Bounty Hunter, Gator Country, The Creeper, The Price You Pay, Dreams I'll Never See.
