Fern Spore Sowing

  • NOTE: Since this video, I have found that for one variety of fern, the ericaceous compost I used was too dense, and the rhizoids could not penetrate it properly, meaning the prothallia floated above it, which is not ideal. Next time I will use finely chopped sphagnum. Whatever you use, it must have a fine grain structure so when it comes to transplanting they will separate easily.
One method of sowing fern spores, in this case, Platycerium ridleyi. See also my other videos on this channel. You could also join Facebook group "Staghorn Fern Owners group..." for other methods and cultivation ideas. I also have a UK staghorn ferns Facebook group - "Staghorn Ferns Group UK".
(Forgot to mention - I made drainage holes at the bottom of the container before sowing.)
I sell spores of Platycerium ridleyi on eBay UK, seller name karstensbotanichorticultural. Dispatch to most parts of the world. Not Australia unfortunately.
NOTE: Update - the spores germinated after about 2 weeks on a heat mat set at 29°C. Even though I tried to sow them very thinly, as you can see in the video, I still ended up with them too dense! Next time, I will pick up a pinch of spores/sporangial hairs with a pair of tweezers, so I can sow even fewer.

Love your videos. Just started with Platycerium myself.
Thanks for all the useful info.
One question, where go get your spores from? Want to try this myself 😊

Thanks C Burgers. I got these particular spores from a Thai seller on eBay (sirinybuaba_0). I got fantastic germination from them. These ought to grow with the standard hemispherical shield form. I also have billions of spores of a form that appeared in my growing with an unusual shield form which I call "Star Shield" (I am presently selling the mother plant on eBay). I was selling these spores last year, and may start selling them again.

@@karstent8138 Indeed a very well assorted seller. What kind of Platycerium species would you recommend for indoor environments in The Netherlands? At the moment I have Pl. Alcicorne, Pl. bifurcatum and Pl. veitchii? I like to try to grow some from seed, think end of spring is a nice time to germinate them...

@@cajbrg Can I recommend that you join the Facebook group I set up for staghorn ferns and ask in there? It's called "Staghorn Ferns Group UK". I'll respond there, and you might just get some input from other European growers. It really helps me to keep myself focused in just one place for all this!

Any updates on these? Have they grown?

Yes, they have formed a forest of prothallia, and are growing their first protofronds!
