I've been using these (three of them) on my scooters for some time now. You CAN turn the LCD display off. Just hold down the "M" and "S" buttons. I do this after each ride to save the battery (then they last ages). The display will automatically turn back on when you start the engine again. Also, I know you selected the correct firing pattern (1P1R) but which RPM range did you select? I found r3 (0-12000 RPM) suited the Lambretta revs the best, all three of my Lambretta's display very accurate revs using this Runleader HM035A (all on static timing). The only time I've had an issue with erratic RPM's being displayed was when I fitted one to my GP which had a variable ignition at the time.
looks like a very good idea to be able to monitor the temp could save you money if the temp. rises beyond the alarm max temp.✊️👍

Might be worth a try , all the RPM cables I’ve seen are spread out along the spark plug cable rather than tightly coiled together
