You are the real MVP I just had this happen on my Oldsmobile Alero 2004 five minutes ago for the second time and I followed your directions it started back up like a champ. My mechanic charged me $140 to do this the first time and quoted me $400 dollars to get it fixed thanks to you I’m saving $400.

My 2003 did that a lot, I was told get new ignition, I got a can of electrical cleaner and cleaned inside ignition switch. It was dirty and creating a security code. Stopped it after I did that. Spray the key and insert couple of times see how much dirt you get on key. Repeat till clean. Good luck.
@@georgehays4777 what kind of cleaner did you use to put on the key when inserting in the ignition? That's funny because I actually had a recall from GM about two years ago to replace the ignition on my Alero, they said that it was a problem with the 2003 and 2004 models... But you're right something to do with a security code that keeps getting sent and that's why the car shuts down... My car actually still does this once every couple of months not too bad as some people have explained, I usually find it does this when it's raining and there's lots of moisture out, also it doesn't when I have my radio on... But I'm going to try the key in the cleaner inside the ignition.
@@georgehays4777 lol that was just a coincidence,it's the Ignition Switch that needs to be replaced which is electrical and nothing to do with where you insert key.
I've been dealing with this for years with my Oldsmobile intrigue 2002. Very good video straight and to the point. This is a whole lot betterthen the older videos that everybody else's post that you did a hell of a job. I'm sure you're going to help a lot of people.

I know it’s 2yrs old but thank you for posting this. I’m to far away to help my disabled mom and was able to tell her step by step over the phone to help her. Looks like I’m replacing or fixed this on my visit home this Christmas visit lol
Olds Intrigue has the same problem (GM). Today Friday , work done, security light start to blink... My Intrigue did NOT want to go home! Frezzing cold outside, but you saved my weekend! 10 minutes later, on the road home :) Thanks!!!
You also might want to have your battery checked, I had this problem most with a weak battery. I ended up getting a new battery because my old one was shot, and I haven't had to reset it since. Knock on wood. I was resetting for almost 3 years, I even had to jump start it, and reset again. take your battery in for a check, and see how shes holding up, especially in these colder months. Glad it worked for you, enjoying your weekend.
Bless you for this!!!! Have a 2001 Alero that would crank and turn over but not start. This was after replacing the ignition. Followed this advice and left the key in the ON position for 5 minutes. The 'security' light in the dash stopped flashing. Turned key off, and then the car started!
My sisters 03 Alero rolled onto it's side after hitting a patch of ice a few dayss ago. Body didn't really get damaged but now it's doing this exact thing when I try to start it. I will try this method this afternoon, thank you!!

Damn. Wow! 2 years ago someone broke my rear door window. Replaced it but not soon afterwards this issue began. My mechanic had it for 10 days, didn't charge me but couldn't get it to work. It was cold out. So..when it got above 50F it started. I should have known about this procedure and I probably would still own the car. Loved that car.
The first thing I tried was the starter - I changed it in the dead of a Minnesota winter - Just to find that wasn't the issue - after searching and searching - I finally found a write up on failed alarm systems - After a few years of doing the reset I thought - I should make a video - I can not believe how many people I have been able to help - have your battery checked make sure it's good - after my battery crapped out - I got a new one and the reset probably never happened, even during the winter when it occurred the most

had a rental pickuo truck i took to a flea market full of stuff to sell years ago that this happened to and it had to be towed out of their, i wonder if this trick would've avoided that tire. i have an 02 alero now, love this car omg. btw you have lovely hands !

Vero Nica - I’m going thru it right now- they put in a new ignition switch and another part-1 time - another time some relay related to the starter - it’s been over 2000. It was towed 5 times and now I use this way - Thankyou for this video- I was at a complete loss with the problem- I only have 120000 on this car I love my Alero - I was leaving the grocery- it’s fine now 💚mine is 04 - the last year they were made-

This just happened in my 2004 Alero about a week ago... In the mechanic charge me 240 bucks! I read that this happens periodically with alero's, so next time I'm definitely going to give this a shot
Waaa $240 oh my goodness, yes please try it, it will most likely happen again Check your battery see if it's holding its charge, that helps If you have to charge your battery often, you may need anew battery
@@_Vern yeah I actually went back and bitch to my mechanic for charging me so much... This is happened to me about two or three times. And it's just a simple fix of just turning the key over until the light stops flashing. Also had my battery replaced, like you said it's just these cars get old and their security system seem to go out. Obviously this car is amazing and I've had it for five years and other than doing standard maintenance for brakes and getting a new set of tires, this is the only other issue I've had with the car, believe it or not the Oldsmobile Alero is a well-made vehicle and there still lots on the road today.
I just changed out my ignition only to find out had the security took it out and put the old one back in everything back out again put the old back in the old part thinking it would take off I did what you said I'll be buying another ignition and I will reset the security then thank you so much your help got my car going thank you
Oh man - That's a story in half and a head ach - Sucky you had to go through all that - But I am glad I could help you out - I bought and changed out my starter - Then read about this online - about 4 yrs in - my battery finally cramped out - after having to jump start it after the 10 min reset - $#@+ - Guess what after I got a new battery - I no longer had the reset issue - Have your battery checked - just another tip
There is a procedure for eliminating this problem. You have to clip one of the ignition wires and install a resistor in line. I did it on my wifes car a few years ago. No problems.

This happened to me this morning, on my 2004 Alero, worked just like this video thanks two more things not mentioned in the video the car doors must remain closed through the process also after car starts wait 5 minutes before putting into gear to give computer time to reset.
Wasn't able to try this fix. Had to have my 2001 alero towed to the car repair shop. The other car repair shop tried to disable the anti theft system? Now the second car repair shop is working on it. The alero started and ran and when I tried to start the car later, it would crank but not start. The fuel pump and fuel filter had already been changed.

I would have your battery checked first Make sure you have a good running battery After I bought a new battery I didn't have the problem anymore But before the new battery I did the reset for abit 3 years Also I was told if you change it the ignition that would work I bought one but never changed it I had the car for 5 years I finally was able to sale it to a guy that only bought Aleros He loved it and it still works Also call your local dealership like gmc and ask if they have a recall or if you know where you can try and finding information on this issue

The sad part about this happening is had she taken it to get a new security system they would have charged/given her a new system instead of telling her to leave it in the on position for 10 min....easy, peasy....thanks for saving me $$$

My my my, you are so very welcome, glad everything worked, make sure to get your battery tested, after a few years of resetting it and jumping my battery, just to start the reset over, again, again, I finally got a new battery, and i'm not kidding, I didn't have the problem anymore, not saying it will work for you, but if it keeps happening, just other thing to check

Ohhhh, interesting my would like make a noise like it was out of gas, so that’s very interesting. It’s at the mechanic now, and they want the master key to run some tests so my wife just dropped it off, very interesting sotuation
Did the reset work for you Or are its that why it's at the shop Could be starter - plus - fuel pump - make sure they test the battery - I haven't had the issue since i got a new battery
Haha you won’t believe it but, I used the master key, my wife has it and guess what it fired right up haha, I guess these cars have an anti theft system where it will shut off the fuel if it’s not the right key, which is weird because I’ve drive like 400 miles on the key that I sue lol
Its temporary - Although after this kiiled my battery after a few winters - I got a new battery and I didn't have the issue anymore up until I sold it to another Alero owner
You gotta wait for 10 minutes my 2003 Alero gls does this and aprently Alero can get free replacement from gm for this issue check your recall issue I got mine done for free
Funny Now they you say that the motor was rebuilt I also have a blinker issue, the hazard light switch has to be switched out, I have to metal with it constantly to get the blinkers to work
I know this was posted a long time ago. Just have a 2001 Alero 2.4 as a second car and over time have had various issues...Although I'd have to say,,,It has been great. Especially the 2.4Twin not having belts but a timing chain. Much nicer in the maintenance / cost department over time... As to the blinker / hazard switch. For those that do not know. It was a re-call years ago. As second owner of car ( acquired at 4,000 miles) now with 160,000 and running great. I did not find this out immediately when issued. Local dealer who car was bought through offered repair. Unfortunately I already had on my own. With Olds no longer a viable Co. Not sure how long a recall can be honored by another GM dealership. Not too mention after years.. Parts availability .. Just a note for everyone

@@_Vern Hi. Nice video ! I have a '02 Olds Intrigue. Frequently, when i put in the key, and start to turn it, all my dash lights start flashing on and off rapidly. I have to recycle the key in and out many times before this flashing will stop, and when it does the car will start per normal. Also, my turn signals rarely work, and my power windows from the master door switch on the drivers door rarely will power up and down any of the windows. Are these cars prone to having such electrical theatrics ?? LOL Anybody have a clue ?
My 03 does this, really sucks when you live in hurricane alley and it does this at the gas station while about 100 people are behind you trying to get gas.

I've been doing this procedure for a long time for the Security light issue that happens intermittently causing my 2001 olds Alero to not start. It happened again today at the gas station (ugh!!). Now I am trying to find a solution to get rid of the three yellow warning lights on the dashboard - Service Vehicle Soon, Anti-lock, and Trac off

I did the starter myself and it was under $50 - places try and take every penny you have

If you have the means to check it yourself other Easiest would have it checked at a auto zone or Parable part shop

This happened to me this morning, on my 2004 Alero, worked just like this video thanks two more things not mentioned in the video the car doors must remain closed through the process also after car starts wait 5 minutes before putting into gear to give computer time to reset.

Wasn't able to try this fix. Had to have my 2001 alero towed to the car repair shop. The other car repair shop tried to disable the anti theft system? Now the second car repair shop is working on it. The alero started and ran and when I tried to start the car later, it would crank but not start. The fuel pump and fuel filter had already been changed.

No I never had my trunk pop - But after reading replies and thank you's - a few people had add on comments just incase others had those issues

You have to do it every time. I have a ‘99 Alero and it has the same issue

I would have your battery checked first
Make sure you have a good running battery
After I bought a new battery I didn't have the problem anymore
But before the new battery I did the reset for abit 3 years
Also I was told if you change it the ignition that would work
I bought one but never changed it
I had the car for 5 years I finally was able to sale it to a guy that only bought Aleros
He loved it and it still works
Also call your local dealership like gmc and ask if they have a recall or if you know where you can try and finding information on this issue

The sad part about this happening is had she taken it to get a new security system they would have charged/given her a new system instead of telling her to leave it in the on position for 10 min....easy, peasy....thanks for saving me $$$

My my my, you are so very welcome, glad everything worked, make sure to get your battery tested, after a few years of resetting it and jumping my battery, just to start the reset over, again, again, I finally got a new battery, and i'm not kidding, I didn't have the problem anymore, not saying it will work for you, but if it keeps happening, just other thing to check

No the car did not make any engine sound

Ohhhh, interesting my would like make a noise like it was out of gas, so that’s very interesting. It’s at the mechanic now, and they want the master key to run some tests so my wife just dropped it off, very interesting sotuation

Could be starter - plus - fuel pump - make sure they test the battery - I haven't had the issue since i got a new battery
Haha you won’t believe it but, I used the master key, my wife has it and guess what it fired right up haha, I guess these cars have an anti theft system where it will shut off the fuel if it’s not the right key, which is weird because I’ve drive like 400 miles on the key that I sue lol

Its temporary - Although after this kiiled my battery after a few winters - I got a new battery and I didn't have the issue anymore up until I sold it to another Alero owner

I also have a blinker issue, the hazard light switch has to be switched out, I have to metal with it constantly to get the blinkers to work
I know this was posted a long time ago. Just have a 2001 Alero 2.4 as a second car and over time have had various issues...Although I'd have to say,,,It has been great. Especially the 2.4Twin not having belts but a timing chain. Much nicer in the maintenance / cost department over time... As to the blinker / hazard switch. For those that do not know. It was a re-call years ago. As second owner of car ( acquired at 4,000 miles) now with 160,000 and running great. I did not find this out immediately when issued. Local dealer who car was bought through offered repair. Unfortunately I already had on my own. With Olds no longer a viable Co. Not sure how long a recall can be honored by another GM dealership. Not too mention after years.. Parts availability .. Just a note for everyone

@@_Vern Hi. Nice video ! I have a '02 Olds Intrigue. Frequently, when i put in the key, and start to turn it, all my dash lights start flashing on and off rapidly. I have to recycle the key in and out many times before this flashing will stop, and when it does the car will start per normal. Also, my turn signals rarely work, and my power windows from the master door switch on the drivers door rarely will power up and down any of the windows. Are these cars prone to having such electrical theatrics ?? LOL Anybody have a clue ?
My 03 does this, really sucks when you live in hurricane alley and it does this at the gas station while about 100 people are behind you trying to get gas.
Before I bought a new battery - I would have to jump it and redo the reset over and over

We have had a 2000 Alero. 21 Years old, but never have had a Security Alarm Error for these vehicles.
From what i have learned - It happens after the car has been through distress

I've been doing this procedure for a long time for the Security light issue that happens intermittently causing my 2001 olds Alero to not start. It happened again today at the gas station (ugh!!). Now I am trying to find a solution to get rid of the three yellow warning lights on the dashboard - Service Vehicle Soon, Anti-lock, and Trac off
